A dc voltage drop develops along amorphous indium oxide nanowires that are exposed to an ac bias source. This voltage is anti-symmetric with magnetic field and is characterized by sample specific quasi-periodic magneto-voltage oscillations. The voltage magnitude increases with decreasing temperature below $T_{C}$ but saturates at low T. As the disorder of the sample is decreased, the dc voltage is suppressed. We suggest that this rectification is a manifestation of the superconducting ratchet effect in which disorder and geometrical confinement play the role of asymmetric pinning centers. This effect demonstrates the importance of inherent inhomogeneity and vortex motion in the superconductor-insulator transition of disordered superconductors.
We study a semiconductor wire with strong spin-orbit coupling, which is proximity-coupled to a superconductor with chemical potential disorder. When tunneling at the semiconductor- superconductor interface is very weak, it is known that disorder in the superconductor does not affect the induced superconductivity nor, therefore, the effective topological superconductivity that emerges above a critical magnetic field. We demonstrate nonperturbatively how this result breaks down with stronger proximity coupling by obtaining the low-energy (i.e., subgap) excitation spectrum through direct numerica…
We investigate effects of ordinary nonmagnetic disorder in the bulk of a superconductor on magnetic adatom-induced Shiba states and on the proximity-induced superconductivity in a nanowire that is tunnel coupled to the bulk superconductor. Within the formalism of self-consistent Born approximation, we show that, contrary to widespread belief, the proximity-induced topological superconductivity can be adversely affected by the bulk superconducting disorder even in the absence of any disorder in the nanowire (or the superconductor-nanowire interface) when the proximity tunnel coupling is strong.…
We analyze the effects of electron-electron interactions and disorder on a Rashba double-nanowire setup coupled to an s-wave superconductor, which has been recently proposed as a versatile platform to generate Kramers pairs of Majorana bound states in the absence of magnetic fields. We identify the regime of parameters for which these Kramers pairs are stable against interaction and disorder effects. We use bosonization, perturbative renormalization group, and replica techniques to derive the flow equations for various parameters of the model and evaluate the corresponding phase diagram with t…
Coupling a normal metal wire to a superconductor induces an excitation gap in the normal metal. In the absence of disorder, the induced excitation gap is strongly suppressed by finite-size effects if the thickness of the superconductor is much smaller than the thickness of the normal metal and the superconducting coherence length. We show that the presence of disorder, either in the bulk or at the exposed surface of the superconductor, significantly enhances the magnitude of the induced gap, such that it approaches the superconducting gap in the limit of strong disorder. We also discuss the sh…
Majorana fermions in some model semiconductor nanowires proximity coupled with \emph{s}-wave superconductor have been investigated, as well as other intragap bound states in topological phase of a Rashba nanowire with non-uniform spin-orbit interaction (SOI). Various sources of disorder, such as disorder in semiconductor nanowire, bulk superconductor and semiconductor-superconductor interface, are included to characterize their effects on the stability of the topological phase. In the case of multiband semiconducting nanowires, the phase diagram of the system as a function of the chemical pote…
Experimental and materials considerations for the topological superconducting state in electron and hole doped semiconductors: searching for non-Abelian Majorana modes in 1D nanowires and 2D heterostructures
The topic of superconductivity in strongly disordered materials has attracted a significant attention. In particular vivid debates are related to the subject of intrinsic spatial inhomogeneity responsible for non-BCS relation between the superconducting gap and the pairing potential. Here we report experimental study of electron transport properties of narrow NbN nanowires with effective cross sections of the order of the debated inhomogeneity scales. We find that conventional models based on phase slip concept provide reasonable fits for the shape of the R(T) transition curve. Temperature dep…
We have designed, fabricated and tested a robust superconducting ratchet device based on topologically frustrated spin-ice nanomagnets. The device is made of a magnetic Co honeycomb array embedded in a superconducting Nb film. This device is based on three simple mechanisms: i) the topology of the Co honeycomb array frustrates in-plane magnetic configurations in the array yielding a distribution of magnetic charges which can be ordered or disordered with in-plane magnetic fields, following spin-ice rules, ii) the local vertex magnetization, which consists of a magnetic half vortex with two cha…
In this work, we investigate the effect of disorder on the topological properties of multichannel superconductor nanowires. While the standard expectation is that the spectral gap is closed and opened at transitions that change the topological index of the wire, we show that the closing and opening of a transport gap can also cause topological transitions, even in the presence of nonzero density of states across the transition. Such transport gaps induced by disorder can change the topological index, driving a topologically trivial wire into a nontrivial state or vice versa. We focus on the Ra…
We analyze influence of a dimerization on the topological phases of the Rashba nanowire proximitized to a superconducting substrate. We find that periodic alternations of the hopping integral and spin-orbit coupling can lead to band inversion, inducing transition to topologically nontrivial superconducting phase that hosts the Majorana zero-energy modes. This "dimerization-induced topological superconductivity" completely repels the topological phase of the uniform nanowire, whenever they happen to overlap. We provide an analytical justification for this puzzling behavior based on the symmetry…
Quantum phase-slip (QPS) is the exact dual to the well-known Josephson effect. Although there are numerous proposals for applications of QPS devices, experimental work to develop these remains in the relatively early stages. Significant barriers to exploiting QPS nanowires for useful technologies still exist, such as establishing robust nanowire fabrication methods that allow coupling to low-loss circuits, and demonstrating control over the QPS process with an experimenter-controlled external bias. Here we report experiments which show that both of these barriers have been overcome. We present…
We apply the fidelity approach to study the topological superconductivity in a spin-orbit coupled nanowire system. The wire is modeled as a one layer lattice chain with Zeeman energy and spin-orbit coupling, which is in proximity to a multi layer superconductor. In particular, we study the effects of disorders and find that the fidelity susceptibility show multiple peaks. It is revealed that the major peak indicates the topological quantum phase transition, while other peaks signal the pining of the Majorana bound states by disorders.
We study the microwave impedance of extremely high aspect ratio (length/width ~ 5,000) superconducting niobium nitride nanowires. The nanowires are fabricated in a compact meander geometry that is in series with the center conductor of a 50 ohm coplanar waveguide transmission line. The transmission coefficient of the sample is measured up to 20 GHz. At high frequency, a peak in the transmission coefficient is seen. Numerical simulations show that this is a half-wave resonance along the length of the nanowire, where the nanowire acts as a high impedance, slow wave transmission line. This resona…
Odd-frequency superconductivity is an exotic phase of matter in which Cooper pairing between electrons is entirely dynamical in nature. Majorana zero modes exhibit pure odd-frequency superconducting correlations due to their specific properties. Thus, by tunnel-coupling an array of Majorana zero modes to a spin-polarized wire, it is in principle possible to engineer a bulk one-dimensional odd-frequency spinless $s$-wave superconductor. We here point out that each tunnel coupling element, being dependent on a large number of material-specific parameters, is generically complex with sample varia…
We investigate the circuit quantum electrodynamics of anharmonic superconducting nanowire oscillators. The sample circuit consists of a capacitively shunted nanowire with a width of about 20 nm and a varying length up to 350 nm, capacitively coupled to an on-chip resonator. By applying microwave pulses we observe Rabi oscillations, measure coherence times and the anharmonicity of the circuit. Despite the very compact design, simple top-down fabrication and high degree of disorder in the oxidized (granular) aluminum material used, we observe lifetimes in the microsecond range.
We have fabricated disordered superconducting nanowires of molybdenium silicide. A molybdenium nanowire is first deposited on top of silicon, and the alloy is formed by rapid thermal annealing. The method allows tuning of the crystal growth to optimise, e.g., the resistivity of the alloy for potential applications in quantum phase slip devices and superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors. The wires have effective diameters from 42 to 79 nm, enabling the observation of crossover from conventional superconductivity to regimes affected by thermal and quantum fluctuations. In the smallest …
The short coherence lengths characteristic of low-dimensional superconductors are associated with usefully high critical fields or temperatures. Unfortunately, such materials are often sensitive to disorder and suffer from phase fluctuations in the superconducting order parameter which diverge with temperature $T$, magnetic field $H$ or current $I$. We propose an approach to overcome synthesis and fluctuation problems: building superconductors from inhomogeneous composites of nanofilaments. Macroscopic crystals of quasi-one-dimensional Na$_{2-δ}$Mo$_6$Se$_6$ featuring Na vacancy disorder ($δ\a…
