We present a study of the small-scale structure of the interstellar medium in the Milky Way. We used HST STIS data to measure N(HI) in a pencil-beam toward 59 AGNs and compared the results with the values seen at 9 arcmin - 36 arcmin resolution in the same directions using radio telescopes (GBT, Green Bank 140-ft and LAB survey). The distribution of ratios N(Lya)/N(HI) has an average of 1 and a dispersion of about 10%. Our analysis also revealed that spectra from the Leiden-Argentina-Bonn (LAB) all-sky HI survey need to be corrected, taking out a broad gaussian component (peak brightness temperature 0.048 K, FWHM 167 km/s, and central velocity -22 km/s). The column density ratios have a distribution showing similarities to simple descriptions of hierarchical structure in the neutral ISM, as well as to a more sophisticated 3D MHD simulation. From the comparison with such models, we find that the sonic Mach number of the local ISM should lie between 0.6 and 0.9. However, none of the models yet matches the observed distribution in all details, but with many more sightlines (as will be provided by COS) our approach can be used to constrain the properties of interstellar turbulence.
Lyman-alpha line and continuum radiative transfer in a clumpy interstellar medium
Intermediate and massive stars drive fast and powerful isotropic winds that interact with the winds of nearby stars in star clusters and the surrounding interstellar medium (ISM). Wind-ISM collisions generate astrospheres around these stars that contain hot $T\sim 10^7$ K gas that adiabatically expands. As individual bubbles expand and collide they become unstable, potentially driving turbulence in star clusters. In this paper we use hydrodynamic simulations to model a densely populated young star cluster within a homogeneous cloud to study stellar wind collisions with the surrounding ISM. We …
Stellar feedback is fundamental to the modeling of galaxy evolution as it drives turbulence and outflows in galaxies. Understanding the timescales involved are critical for constraining the impact of stellar feedback on the interstellar medium (ISM). We analyzed the resolved star formation histories along with the spatial distribution and kinematics of the atomic and ionized gas of four nearby star-forming dwarf galaxies (NGC 4068, NGC 4163, NGC 6789, UGC 9128) to determine the timescales over which stellar feedback drives turbulence. The four galaxies are within 5 Mpc and have a range of prop…
We apply a turbulence-regulated model of star formation to calculate the star formation rate (SFR) of dense star-forming clouds in simulations of jet-ISM interactions. The method isolates individual clumps and accounts for the impact of virial parameter and Mach number of the clumps on the star formation activity. This improves upon other estimates of the SFR in simulations of jet--ISM interactions, which are often solely based on local gas density, neglecting the impact of turbulence. We apply this framework to the results of a suite of jet-ISM interaction simulations to study how the jet reg…
Quantifying the efficiency of dust destruction in the interstellar medium (ISM) due to supernovae (SNe) is crucial for the understanding of galactic dust evolution. We present 3D hydrodynamic simulations of an SN blast wave propagating through the ISM. The interaction between the forward shock of the remnant and the surrounding ISM leads to destruction of ISM dust by the shock heated gas. We consider the dust processing due to ion sputtering, accretion of atoms/molecules and grain-grain collisions. Using 2D slices from the simulation timeseries, we apply post-processing calculations using the …
We present a generic mechanism for the thermal damping of compressive waves in the interstellar medium (ISM), occurring due to radiative cooling. We solve for the dispersion relation of magnetosonic waves in a two-fluid (ion-neutral) system in which density- and temperature-dependent heating and cooling mechanisms are present. We use this dispersion relation, in addition to an analytic approximation for the nonlinear turbulent cascade, to model dissipation of weak magnetosonic turbulence. We show that in some ISM conditions, the cutoff wavelength for magnetosonic turbulence becomes tens to hun…
The interstellar medium (ISM) is turbulent on all scales and in all phases. In this paper, we study turbulence with different tracers in four nearby star-forming regions: Orion, Ophiuchus, Perseus, and Taurus. We combine the APOGEE-2 and Gaia surveys to obtain the full 6-dimensional measurements of positions and velocities of young stars in these regions. The velocity structure functions (VSFs) of the stars show a universal scaling of turbulence. We also obtain Hα gas kinematics in these four regions from the Wisconsin H-Alpha Mapper. The VSFs of the Hα are more diverse compared to the stars. …
We perform joint modeling of the composite rest-frame far-UV (FUV) and optical spectra of redshift 1.85<z<3.49 star-forming galaxies to deduce key properties of the massive stars, ionized ISM, and neutral ISM, with the aim of investigating the principal factors affecting the production and escape of Ly-alpha (Lya) photons. Our sample consists of 136 galaxies with deep Keck/LRIS and MOSFIRE spectra covering, respectively, Ly-beta through CIII] 1907, 1909; and [OII], [NeIII], H-beta, [OIII], H-alpha, [NII], and [SII]. Spectral and photoionization modeling indicate that the galaxies are uniformly…
Supersonic gas turbulence is a ubiquitous property of the interstellar medium. The level of turbulence, quantified by the gas velocity dispersion ($σ_{\rm g}$), is observed to increase with the star formation rate (SFR) of a galaxy, but it is yet not established whether this trend is driven by stellar feedback or gravitational instabilities. In this work we carry out hydrodynamical simulations of entire disc galaxies, with different gas fractions, to understand the origins of the SFR-$σ_{\rm g}$ relation. We show that disc galaxies reach the same levels of turbulence regardless of the presence…

Observations indicate that turbulence in the interstellar medium (ISM) is supersonic ($M_{\rm turb}\gg1$) and strongly magnetized ($β\sim0.01-1$), while in the intracluster medium (ICM) it is subsonic ($M_{\rm turb}\lesssim1$) and weakly magnetized ($β\sim100$). Here, $M_{\rm turb}$ is the turbulent Mach number and $β$ is the plasma beta. We study the properties of shocks induced in these disparate environments, including the distribution of the shock Mach number, $M_s$, and the dissipation of the turbulent energy at shocks, through numerical simulations using a high-order accurate code based …
Turbulence is a vital part of the interstellar medium (ISM) of galaxies, contributing significantly to galaxy energy budgets and acting as a regulator of star formation. Despite this, little is understood about ISM turbulence empirically. In the Milky Way, multiple tracers are used to reconstruct the density- and velocity-fluctuation power spectra over an enormous range of scales, but questions remain on the nature of these fluctuations at the smallest scales. Even less is known about the ISM of distant galaxies, where only a few tracers of turbulence, such as non-thermal broadening of optical…
Supersonic flows in the interstellar medium (ISM) are believed to be a key driver of the molecular cloud formation and evolution. Among molecular clouds' properties, the ratio between the solenoidal and compressive modes of turbulence plays important roles in determining the star formation efficiency. We use numerical simulations of supersonic converging flows of the warm neutral medium (WNM) resolving the thermal instability to calculate the early phase of molecular cloud formation, and investigate the turbulence structure and the density probability distribution function (density PDF) of the…
Stars form in molecular clouds in the interstellar medium (ISM) with a turbulent kinematic state. Newborn stars therefore should retain the turbulent kinematics of their natal clouds. Gaia DR2 and APOGEE-2 surveys in combination provide three-dimensional (3D) positions and 3D velocities of young stars in the Orion Molecular Cloud Complex. Using the full 6D measurements, we compute the velocity structure functions (VSFs) of the stars in six different groups within the Orion Complex. We find that the motions of stars in all diffuse groups exhibit strong characteristics of turbulence. Their first…
The evolution of the molecular interstellar medium is controlled by processes such as turbulence, gravity, stellar feedback, and Galactic shear. AL a part of the ISM-6D https://gxli.github.io/ISM-6D/ project, using Gaia astrometric measurements towards a sample of young stellar objects (YSOs), we study morphology and kinematic structure of the associated molecular gas. We identify 150 YSO associations with distance $d \lesssim 3 \;\rm kpc$. The YSO associations are elongated, with a median aspect ratio of 1.97, and are oriented parallel to the disk midplane, with a median angle of 30$^{\circ}$…
The Lya line in the UV and the [CII] line in the FIR are widely used tools to identify galaxies and to obtain insights into ISM properties in the early Universe. By combining data obtained with ALMA in band 7 at ~ 320 GHz as part of the ALMA Large Program to INvestigate [CII] at Early Times (ALPINE) with spectroscopic data from DEIMOS at Keck, VIMOS and FORS2 at the VLT, we assembled a unique sample of 53 main-sequence star-forming galaxies at 4.4 < z < 6 in which we detect both the Lya line and the [CII]. We used [CII], observed with ALMA, as a tracer of the systemic velocity of the galaxies,…
Bright and Faint Ends of Ly$α$ Luminosity Functions at $\textit{z} = 2$ Determined by the Subaru Survey: Implications for AGN, Magnification Bias, and ISM HI Evolution
Momentum feedback from isolated supernova remnants (SNRs) have been increasingly recognized by modern cosmological simulations as a resolution-independent means to implement the effects of feedback in galaxies, such as turbulence and winds. However, the integrated momentum yield from SNRs is uncertain due to the effects of SN clustering and interstellar medium (ISM) inhomogeneities. In this paper, we use spatially-resolved observations of the prominent 10-kpc star-forming ring of M31 to test models of mass-weighted ISM turbulence driven by momentum feedback from isolated, non-overlapping SNRs.…
