Inflectional loci of scrolls II

Let $X\subset \mathbb P^N$ be a scroll over a $m$-dimensional variety $Y$. We find the locally free sheaves on $X$ governing the osculating behavior of $X$, and, under certain dimension assumptions, we compute the cohomology class and the degree of the inflectional locus of $X$. The case $m=1$ was treated in \cite{LMP}. Here we treat the case $m\ge 2$, which is more complicated for at least two reasons: the expression for the osculating sheaves and the computations of the class of the inflectional locus become more complex, and the dimension requirements needed to ensure validity of the formulas are more severe.

Quot schemes, Segre invariants, and inflectional loci of scrolls over curves

Let $E$ be a vector bundle over a smooth curve $C$, and $S = \mathbb{P} E$ the associated projective bundle. We describe the inflectional loci of certain projective models $ψ\colon S \dashrightarrow \mathbb{P}^n$ in terms of Quot schemes of $E$. This gives a geometric characterisation of the Segre invariant $s_1 (E)$, which leads to new geometric criteria for semistability and cohomological stability of bundles over $C$. Inflectional loci of scrolls

Let $X\subset \mathbb P^N$ be a scroll over a smooth curve $C$ and let $Ł=\mathcal O_{\mathbb P^N}(1)|_X$ denote the hyperplane bundle. The special geometry of $X$ implies that some sheaves related to the principal part bundles of $Ł$ are locally free. The inflectional loci of $X$ can be expressed in terms of these sheaves, leading to explicit formulas for the cohomology classes of the loci. The formulas imply that the only uninflected scrolls are the balanced rational normal scrolls.

Low dimensional discriminant loci and scrolls

Smooth complex polarized varieties $(X,L)$ with a vector subspace $V \subseteq H^0(X,L)$ spanning $L$ are classified under the assumption that the locus ${\Cal D}(X,V)$ of singular elements of $|V|$ has codimension equal to $\dim(X)-i$, $i=3,4,5$, the last case under the additional assumption that $X$ has Picard number one. Classification of Elliptic Line Scrolls

The classification of projective elliptic line scrolls with the description of their singular loci is given. In particular we recover Atiyah Theorem by using classical methods.

Osculating properties of decomposable scrolls

Osculating spaces of decomposable scrolls (of any genus and not necessarily normal)are studied and their inflectional loci are related to those of their generating curves by using systematically an idea introduced by Piene and Sacchiero in the setting of rational normal scrolls. In this broader setting the extra components of the second discriminant locus - deriving from flexes - are investigated and a new class of uninflected surface scrolls is presented and characterized. Further properties related to osculation are discussed for (not necessarily decomposable) scrolls.

Some Loci of Rational Cubic Fourfolds

In this paper we investigate the divisor $\mathcal C_{14}$ inside the moduli space of smooth cubic hypersurfaces in $\mathbb P^5$, whose generic element is a smooth cubic containing a smooth quartic scroll. Using the fact that all degenerations of quartic scrolls in $\mathbb P^5$ contained in a smooth cubic hypersurface are surfaces with one apparent double point, we conclude that every cubic hypersurface belonging to $\mathcal C_{14}$ is rational. Secant loci of scrolls over curves

Given a curve $C$ and a linear system $\ell$ on $C$, the secant locus $V_e^{e-f}( \ell )$ parametrises effective divisors of degree $e$ which impose at most $e-f$ conditions on $\ell$. On the construction of some Buchsbaum varieties and the Hilbert scheme of elliptic scrolls in P^5

We study the degeneracy loci of general bundle morphisms from the direct sum of m copies of the structural sheaf on $P^n$ to $Ω(2)$, also from the point of view of the classical geometrical interpretation of the sections of $Ω(2)$ as linear line complexes. We consider in particular the case of $P^5$ with m=2, 3. For n=5 and m=3 we give an explicit description of the Hilbert scheme H of elliptic normal scrolls in $P^5$, by defining a natural rational map from the Grassmannian G(2,14) to H, which results to be dominant with general fibre of degree four.
