We demonstrate the theoretical possibility of obtaining a pure spin current in a 1D ring with spin-orbit interaction by irradiation with a non-adiabatic, two-component terahertz laser pulse, whose spatial asymmetry is reflected by an internal dephasing angle $ϕ$. The stationary solutions of the equation of motion for the density operator are obtained for a spin-orbit coupling linear in the electron momentum (Rashba) and used to calculate the time-dependent charge and spin currents. We find that there are critical values of $ϕ$ at which the charge current disappears, while the spin current reaches a maximum or a minimum value.
We consider a model of a semiconductor quantum ring of finite width in a constant perpendicular magnetic field. We show how a current of the same order as the persistent current can be generated non-adiabatically by a short intensive pulse in the Tera-Hertz regime.
Geometric phases of scattering states in a ring geometry are studied based on a variant of the adiabatic theorem. Three time scales, i.e., the adiabatic period, the system time and the dwell time, associated with adiabatic scattering in a ring geometry plays a crucial role in determining geometric phases, in contrast to only two time scales, i.e., the adiabatic period and the dwell time, in an open system. We derive a formula connecting the gauge invariant geometric phases acquired by time-reversed scattering states and the circulating (pumping) current. A numerical calculation shows that the …
We investigate the difference in the response of a one-dimensional semiconductor quantum ring and a finite-width ring to a strong and short-lived time-dependent perturbation in the THz regime. In both cases the persistent current is modified through a nonadiabatic change of the many-electron states of the system, but by different mechanisms in each case.
In a mesoscopic system, under zero bias voltage, a finite charge is transferred by quantum adiabatic pumping by adiabatically and periodically changing two or more control parameters. We obtained expressions for the pumped charge for a ring of three quantum dots (QDs) by choosing the magnetic flux penetrating the ring as one of the control parameters. We found that the pumped charge shows a steplike behavior with respect to the variance of the flux. The value of the step heights is not universal but depends on the trajectory of the control parameters. We discuss the physical origin of this beh…
We find an exact expression for the current that is induced in a 3 site ring during a multiple-path adiabatic crossing. The understanding of the dynamics requires to go beyond the two-level phenomenology. In particular we highlight a prototype process, "adiabatic metamorphosis", during which current is flowing through a non-accessible site. This helps to understand the crossover from coherent non-classical splitting to stochastic noisy-alike partitioning of the current.
We study Berry phase effects on conductance properties of diffusive mesoscopic conductors, which are caused by an electron spin moving through an orientationally inhomogeneous magnetic field. Extending previous work, we start with an exact, i.e. not assuming adiabaticity, calculation of the universal conductance fluctuations in a diffusive ring within the weak localization regime, based on a differential equation which we derive for the diffuson in the presence of Zeeman coupling to a magnetic field texture. We calculate the field strength required for adiabaticity and show that this strength …
The spin orbit effect in graphene is too muted to have any observable significance with respect to its application in spintronics. However, graphene technology is too valuable to be rendered impotent to spin transport. In this communication we look at the effect of adiabatically twisting a single molecule magnet embedded in a graphene monolayer. Surprisingly, we see that pure spin currents (zero charge current) can be generated from the system via quantum pumping. In addition we also see spin selective current can also be pumped from the system. The pure spin current seen is quite resilient to…
We examine adiabatic quantum pumping generated by an oscillating scatterer embedded in a one-dimensional ballistic ring and compare it with pumping caused by the same scatterer connected to external reservoirs. The pumped current for an open conductor, paradoxically, is non-zero even in the limit of vanishing transmission. In contrast, for the ring geometry the pumped current vanishes in the limit of vanishing transmission. We explain this paradoxical result and demonstrate that the physics underlying adiabatic pumping is the same in open and in closed systems.
An electron spin moving adiabatically in a strong, spatially non-uniform magnetic field accumulates a geometric phase or Berry phase, which might be observable as a conductance oscillation in a mesoscopic ring. Two contradicting theories exist for how strong the magnetic field should be to ensure adiabaticity if the motion is diffusive. To resolve this controversy, we study the effect of a non-uniform magnetic field on the spin polarization and on the weak-localization effect. The diffusion equation for the Cooperon is solved exactly. Adiabaticity requires that the spin-precession time is shor…
Recent controversy on the quantum dots dephasing mechanisms (between pure and inelastic) is re-examined by isolating the quantum dots from their substrate by using the appropriate limits of the ionization energy theory and the quantum adiabatic theorem. When the phonons in the quantum dots are isolated adiabatically from the phonons in the substrate, the elastic or pure dephasing becomes the dominant mechanism. On the other hand, for the case where the phonons from the substrate are non-adiabatically coupled to the quantum dots, the inelastic dephasing process takes over. This switch-over is d…
A net circulating current may appear within a quantum ring under finite bias. We study the characteristic features of the circular current in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit interaction (RSOI). Both charge and spin currents appear within the ring. Whereas when the ring is symmetrically connected to the external leads, we can get a pure charge current at non-zero Fermi-energy. On the other hand, for asymmetric ring-to-leads configuration, at zero Fermi-energy, the spin current vanishes but a pure charge current flows within the ring. Tuning RSOI, we demonstrate a way to control the pure spin …
By solving the Rashba model of mesoscopic rings, we give analytically the ground-state properties of the ring, including the spin polarization, the persistent charge and spin currents (PCC and PSC). These ground-state properties can be given based on four kinds of electron numbers in rings. The effect of the self-inductance of the ring leads to the self-sustained magnetic flux (SSMF) and the self-sustained PCC and PSC, which break spontaneously time-reversal symmetry to form orbital magnetic phase (OMP). To tune the spin-orbit coupling strength or electron number of the ring can induce the pha…
An electron interferometer was designed and fabricated via a normal metal/insulator/ferromagnet non-local lateral spin valve with a ring-shaped normal metal/insulator spacer, and spin current interference was observed. A very high spin signal of 200 m$Ω$ was found in a device with 2 $μ$m injector-detector distance and magnetic field swept parallel to the plane. With a perpendicular magnetic field sweep, a Hanle effect measurement showed both spin precession and $h/e$ oscillation. Because of the non-adiabatic nature of the precessing spins at low fields as they traverse the normal metal ring, t…
We report a circuit cavity optomechanical system in which a nanomechanical resonator is adiabatically embedded inside an optical ring resonator with ultralow transition loss. The nanomechanical device forms part of the top layer of a horizontal silicon slot ring resonator, which enables dispersive coupling to the dielectric substrate via a tapered nanogap. Our measurements show nearly uncompromised optical quality factors (Q) after the release of the mechanical beam.
By combining Floquet theory with Green's function formalism, we present non-adiabatic quantum spin and charge pumping through a zigzag ferromagnetic graphene nanoribbon including a double-barriers structure driven weakly by two local $ac$ gate voltages operating with a phase-lag. Over a wide range of Fermi energies, interesting quantum pumping such as i) pure spin pumping with zero net charge pumping, ii) pure charge pumping and iii) fully spin polarized pumping can be achieved by tuning and manipulating driving frequency in the non-adiabatic regime. Spin polarized pumping which is measurable …
We discuss the change of the corner charge for noninteracting two dimensional insulators with inversion symmetry undergoing adiabatic evolution. We show that the change of the corner charge is accounted for by the adiabatic current flowing along the edges of the system. The study of systems with quasi-1D geometry is necessary to derive the analytical expression for the adiabatic current. This fact suggests that the change of the corner charge is neither a purely bulk nor edge effect, but rather a mixed one. The derived adiabatic current was examined and shows good agreement with the numerical …
We consider the prototypical "piston pump" operating on a ring, where a circulating current is induced by means of an AC driving. This can be regarded as a generalized Fermi-Ulam model, incorporating a finite-height moving wall (piston) and non trivial topology (ring). The amount of particles transported per cycle is determined by a layered structure of phase-space. Each layer is characterized by a different drift velocity. We discuss the differences compared with the adiabatic and Boltzmann pictures, and highlight the significance of the "diabatic" contribution that might lead to a counter-st…
We study non-adiabatic two-parameter charge and spin pumping through a single-level quantum dot with Coulomb interaction. For the limit of weak tunnel coupling and in the regime of pumping frequencies up to the tunneling rates, $Ω\lesssim Γ/\hbar$, we perform an exact resummation of contributions of all orders in the pumping frequency. As striking non-adiabatic signatures, we find frequency-dependent phase shifts in the charge and spin currents, which allow for an effective single-parameter pumping as well as pure spin without charge currents.
Using recently developed tools from space-adiabatic perturbation theory, in particular the construction of a non-equilibrium almost stationary state, we give a new proof that the Kubo formula for the Hall conductivity remains valid beyond the linear response regime. In particular, we prove that, in quantum Hall systems and Chern insulators, the transverse response current is quantized up to any order in the strength of the inducing electric field. The latter is introduced as a perturbation to a periodic, spectrally gapped equilibrium Hamiltonian by means of a linear potential; existing proofs …
We study a non-adiabatic excitation of an electron system in a 1D quantum ring radiated by a short THz pulse. The response of two models, a continuous and discrete, is explored. By introducing a spatial asymmetry in the external perturbation a net current can be generated in the ring at a zero magnetic field. Effect of impurities and ratchets are investigated in combination with symmetric and asymmetric external excitation.
Anholonomies in eigenstates are studied through time-dependent variations of a magnetic flux in an Aharonov-Bohm ring. The anholonomies in the eigenenergy and the expectation values of eigenstates are shown to persist beyond the adiabatic regime. The choice of the gauge of the magnetic flux is shown to be crucial to clarify the relationship of these anholonomies to the eigenspace anholonomy, which is described by a non-Abelian connection in the adiabatic limit.
Due to spin-orbit coupling, the adiabatic perturbation of an electron's orbital motion induced by a revolving external electric field lead to the electron spin-precession. The obtained results describe both transverse and longitudinal dynamics of an effective spin, for conical and figure-8 trajectories of a driving electric field, and elucidate the link between the quantum-mechanical, geometrical, and classical pictures of spin rotation. Within the limit of adiabatic approximation the derived formulas are valid regardless of whether eigenvectors of the total Hamiltonian of the problem are expl…
We present a prescription for generating pure spin current or spin selective current, based on adiabatic quantum pumping in a tight-binding model of a one dimensional conductor. A formula for the instantaneous pumped current is derived without introducing the scattering matrix. Our calculations indicate that some pumping cycles produce the maximum value 2 of pumped spin while others reverse the direction of current as a result of small alterations of the pumping cycle. We find pumping cycles which produce essentially any ratio of spin current to charge current.
We study adiabatic pumping through a two-level quantum dot with spin-orbit coupling. Using a diagrammatic real-time approach, we calculate both the pumped charge and spin for a periodic variation of the dot's energy levels in the limit of weak tunnel coupling. Thereby, we compare the two limits of vanishing and infinitely large charging energy on the quantum dot. We discuss the dependence of the pumped charge and pumped spin on gate voltages, the symmetry in the tunnel-matrix elements and spin-orbit coupling strength. We identify the possibility to generate pure spin currents in the absence of…
We study an adiabatic quantum pump effect in a two terminal graphene device with two oscillating square electric barriers and a stationary magnetic barrier using the scattering matrix approach. The model employs the low-energy Dirac approximation and incorporates the possible existence of a finite band gap in graphene spectrum. We show that in this case valley-polarized and pure valley currents can be pumped due to the valley symmetry breaking. For a δ-function magnetic barrier we present analytical expressions for bilinear total and valley pumping responses. These results are compared to nume…
Time periodic perturbations of an electron system on a ring are examined. For small frequencies periodic small amplitude perturbations give rise to side band currents which in leading order are inversely proportional to the frequency. These side band currents compensate the current of the central band such that to leading order no net pumped current is generated. In the non-adiabatic limit, larger pump frequencies can lead to resonant excitations: as a consequence a net pumped current arises. We illustrate our results for a one channel ring with a quantum dot whose barriers are modulated param…
Using transmission electron microscopy, we investigate the thermally activated motion of domain walls (DWs) between two positions in permalloy (Ni80Fe20) nanowires at room temperature. We show that this purely thermal motion is well described by an Arrhenius law, allowing for a description of the DW as a quasi-particle in a 1D potential landscape. By injecting small currents, the potential is modified, allowing for the determination of the non-adiabatic spin torque: the non-adiabatic coefficient is 0.010 +/- 0.004 for a transverse DW and 0.073 +/- 0.026 for a vortex DW. The larger value is att…
Lattice stability in a model of antiferromagnetic ring coupled to adiabatic phonons is investigated for different values of the spin and numbers of magnetic sites. The magneto-elastic transition is shown to be heavily affected by the spin value, displaying a qualitative difference in the nature of the instability for spin one-half. Among the different synthesized materials, Cu$_8$ seems to be the best candidate to observe lattice dimerization in these systems. Our analysis excludes stable lattice distortions in higher spin rings. The effects of thermal fluctuations are studied in the Cu$_8$ mo…
In order to investigate the effects of interference and interaction in adiabatic pumping, we consider an Aharonov-Bohm (AB) interferometer with a quantum dot embedded either in one or in both arms. We employ a real-time formalism and we perform an expansion both in the tunnel-coupling strengths between dot and leads and in the pumping frequency, taking into account the Coulomb interaction non perturbatively. We find that pumping in a single-dot AB interferometer has a peristaltic but phase-coherent character. In a double-dot AB interferometer, we find a pumping mechanism that relies purely on …
Electron transport properties in a triple-quantum-dot ring with three terminals are theoretically studied. By introducing local Rashba spin-orbit interaction on an individual quantum dot, we calculate the charge and spin currents in one lead. We find that a pure spin current appears in the absence of a magnetic field. The polarization direction of the spin current can be inverted by altering the bias voltage. In addition, by tuning the magnetic field strength, the charge and spin currents reach their respective peaks alternately.
By applying a local Rashba spin-orbit interaction on an individual quantum dot of a four-terminal four-quantum-dot ring and introducing a finite bias between the longitudinal terminals, we theoretically investigate the charge and spin currents in the transverse terminals. It is found that when the quantum dot levels are separate from the chemical potentials of the transverse terminals, notable pure spin currents appear in the transverse terminals with the same amplitude and opposite polarization directions. Besides, the polarization directions of such pure spin currents can be inverted by alte…
A pure spin current injector is proposed based on adiabatic pumping and crossed normal/Andreev reflection. The device consists of a three-terminal ferromagnet-superconductor-semiconductor system in which the injection of a pure spin current is into the semiconductor which is coupled to the superconductor within a coherence length away from the ferromagnet enabling the phenomena of crossed normal /Andreev reflection to operate. Quantum pumping is induced by adiabatically modulating two independent parameters of the ferromagnetic lead, namely the magnetization strength and the strength of coupli…
We report results on the rectification properties of a carbon nanotube (CNT) ring transistor, contacted by CNT leads, whose novel features have been recently communicated by Watanabe et al. [Appl. Phys. Lett. 78, 2928 (2001)]. This paper contains results which are validated by the experimental observations. Moreover, we report on additional features of the transmission of this ring device which are associated with the possibility of breaking the lead inversion symmetry. The linear conductance displays a "chessboard"-like behavior alternated with anomalous zero-lines which should be directly ob…
We propose a theoretical framework that captures the geometric vector potential emerging from the non-adiabatic spin dynamics of itinerant carriers subject to arbitrary magnetic textures. Our approach results in a series of constraints on the geometric potential and the non-adiabatic geometric phase associated with it. These constraints play a decisive role when studying the geometric spin phase gathered by conducting electrons in ring interferometers under the action of in-plane magnetic textures, allowing a simple characterization of the topological transition recently reported by Saarikoski…
We address the controversy concerning the necessary conditions for the observation of Berry phases in disordered mesoscopic conductors. For this purpose we calculate the spin-dependent conductance of disordered two-dimensional structures in the presence of inhomogeneous magnetic fields. Our numerical results show that for both, the overall conductance and quantum corrections, the relevant parameter defining adiabatic spin transport scales with the square root of the number of scattering events, in generalization of Stern's original proposal [Phys. Rev. Lett. 68, 1022 (1992)]. This could hinder…
We study entanglement degradation of two non-interacting qubits subject to independent baths with broadband spectra typical of solid state nanodevices. We obtain the analytic form of the concurrence in the presence of adiabatic noise for classes of entangled initial states presently achievable in experiments. We find that adiabatic (low frequency) noise affects entanglement reduction analogously to pure dephasing noise. Due to quantum (high frequency) noise, entanglement is totally lost in a state-dependent finite time. The possibility to implement on-chip both local and entangling operations …
Quantum pumping, in its different forms, is attracting attention from different fields, from fundamental quantum mechanics, to nanotechnology, to superconductivity. We investigate the crossover of quantum pumping from the adiabatic to the anti-adiabatic regime in the presence of dissipation, and find general and explicit analytical expressions for the pumped current in a minimal model describing a system with the topology of a ring forced by a periodic modulation of frequency omega. The solution allows following in a transparent way the evolution of pumped DC current from much smaller to much …
A novel quantum interference effect in disordered quasi-one-dimensional rings in the inhomogeneous magnetic field is reported. We calculate the canonical disorder averaged persistent current using the diagrammatic perturbation theory. It is shown that within the adiabatic regime the average current oscillates as a function of the geometric flux which is related to the Berry phase and the period becomes half the value of the case of a single one-dimensional ring. We also discuss the magnetic dephasing effect on the averaged current.
