Recent controversy on the quantum dots dephasing mechanisms (between pure and inelastic) is re-examined by isolating the quantum dots from their substrate by using the appropriate limits of the ionization energy theory and the quantum adiabatic theorem. When the phonons in the quantum dots are isolated adiabatically from the phonons in the substrate, the elastic or pure dephasing becomes the dominant mechanism. On the other hand, for the case where the phonons from the substrate are non-adiabatically coupled to the quantum dots, the inelastic dephasing process takes over. This switch-over is due to different elemental composition in quantum dots as compared to its substrate. We also provide unambiguous analyses as to understand why GaAs/AlGaAs quantum dots may only have pure dephasing while InAs/GaAs quantum dots give rise to the inelastic dephasing as the dominant mechanism. Our study accentuates the importance of the elemental composition (of both quantum dots and substrate) in evaluating the dephasing mechanisms of quantum dots.
We present a direct experimental evidence of photo-ionized CdTe quantum dot core having luminescence "off" state at band-edge photo-excitation. We use the autocorrelation of fluorescence fluctuations from dilute colloidal solution of CdTe quantum dots in a diffraction limited detection volume to determine their photo-ionization probability. The ionization probability is in the same order of magnitude (\approx10-6) as the CdSe and CdSe/ZnS core/shell quantum dots. Further, we measured the ionization/ neutralization rates (\approx104 s-1) after addition of β-mercaptanol and found that ionization…
Recent numerical results for ionization of quantum dots by periodic electric field during the electric dipole spin resonance are compared with known analytical approaches. It is found that in finite-length quantum wires the numerical ionization rate is slower than the analytical one, especially for low driving field when the confinement potential strongly affects the dynamics. Still, the analytically predicted ionization times are in satisfactory correspondence with mean energy threshold times when the energy crosses the border between localized and continuum states.
Extremely long coherence times, excellent single-qubit gate fidelities and two-qubit logic have been demonstrated with silicon metal-oxide-semiconductor spin qubits, making it one of the leading platforms for quantum information processing. Despite this, a long-standing challenge in this system has been the demonstration of tunable tunnel coupling between single electrons. Here we overcome this hurdle with gate-defined quantum dots and show couplings that can be tuned on and off for quantum operations. We use charge sensing to discriminate between the (2,0) and (1,1) charge states of a double …
We study quantum dots defined by external potentials within finite flakes of bilayer graphene using the tight-binding approach. We find that in the limit of large flakes containing zigzag edges the dot-localized energy levels appear within the energy continuum formed by extended states. As a consequence no ionization threshold for the carriers contained within the dot exists. For smaller flakes with zigzag boundaries the dot-localized energy levels appear interlaced with the energy levels outside the flake, so in a charging experiment the electrons will be added alternately to the dot area and…
Deterministic control over the location and number of donors is crucial to donor spin quantum bits (qubits) in semiconductor based quantum computing. In this work, a focused ion beam is used to implant antimony donors close to quantum dots. Ion detectors are integrated next to the quantum dots to sense the implants. The numbers of donors implanted can be counted to a precision of a single ion. In low-temperature transport measurements, regular coulomb blockade is observed from the quantum dots. Charge offsets indicative of donor ionization are also observed in devices with counted donor implan…
The strong coupling of a superconductor to a spinful quantum dot results in Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) discrete subgap excitations. In isolation and at zero temperature, the excitations are $δ$ resonances. In transport experiments, however, they show as broad differential conductance peaks. We obtain the lineshape of the peaks and their temperature dependence in superconductor-quantum-dot-metal (S-QD-N) nanowire-based devices. Unexpectedly, we find that the peaks shift in energy with temperature, with the shift magnitude and sign depending on ground state parity and bias voltage. Additionally, we …
We present measurements of the second-order coherence function on emission from single GaN quantum dots. In some cases a large degree of photon antibunching is observed, demonstrating isolation of a single quantum system. For a selected quantum dot, we study the dependence of photon antibunching on excitation power and temperature. Using pulsed excitation, we demonstrate an ultraviolet triggered single-photon source operating at a wavelength of 358 nm.
The precise simulation of the preparation, control, and readout of a single-hole spin is investigated via hierarchical equations of motion(HEOM) approach. By ionization of a resonantly excited electron-hole pair and tunneling the conduction level electrons into electrodes, a single-hole spin qubit is initialized. SU(2) control is achieved via the combination of Larmor procession of the hole spin in Voigt geometry magnetic field and rotation about the optical axis with a geometric phase induced by a picosecond laser pulse. Read-out of the qubit is implemented through photocurrent. We compared t…
External control over the electron and hole wavefunctions geometry and topology is investigated in a p-i-n diode embedding a dot-in-a-well InAs/GaAsSb quantum structure with type II band alignment. We find highly tunable exciton dipole moments and largely decoupled exciton recombination and ionization dynamics. We also predicted a bias regime where the hole wavefunction topology changes continuously from quantum dot-like to quantum ring-like as a function of the external bias. All these properties have great potential in advanced electro-optical applications and in the investigation of fundame…
Semiconductor quantum dots driven by the broadband radiation fields of nearby quantum point contacts provide an exciting new setting for probing dynamics in driven quantum systems at the nanoscale. We report on real-time charge-sensing measurements of the dot occupation, which reveal sharp resonances in the ionization rate as a function of gate voltage and applied magnetic field. Despite the broadband nature of excitation, the resonance widths are much smaller than the scale of thermal broadening. We show that such resonant enhancement of ionization is not accounted for by conventional approac…
We explore potentials that break time-reversal symmetry to confine the surface states of 3D topological insulators into quantum wires and quantum dots. A magnetic domain wall on a ferromagnet insulator cap layer provides interfacial states predicted to show the quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE). Here we show that confinement can also occur at magnetic domain heterostructures, with states extended in the inner domain, as well as interfacial QAHE states at the surrounding domain walls. The proposed geometry allows the isolation of the wire and dot from spurious circumventing surface states. F…
Hereby, we present a comprehensive experimental and theoretical study of the electronic structure and optical properties of excitonic complexes in strain-engineered InGaAs/GaAs quantum dots (QDs) grown by metal-organic chemical vapour deposition and emitting at the 1300 nm telecommunication window. Single QD properties have been determined experimentally for a number of nanostructures by means of excitation-power-dependent and polarization-resolved microphotoluminescence and further compared with the results of confined states calculations employing the 8-band kp theory combined with the confi…
We demonstrate that the current of photoelectrons from a quantum dot exhibits oscillations as a function of the photon energy owing to the predominant ionization from the dot boundary. In the Fourier reciprocal space of the photoelectron wave vector these oscillations reveal frequencies connected to the confinement range. We attribute the oscillation in the recent photocurrent measurements by Fry et al. (PRL 84, 733 (2000)) to this phenomenon. Angle-resolved and angle-integrated experiments with the focus on directly imaging the confining potential are suggested.
Recent demonstrations using electron spins stored in quantum dots array as qubits are promising for developing a scalable quantum computing platform. An ongoing effort is therefore aiming at the precise control of the quantum dots parameters in larger and larger arrays which represents a complex challenge. Partitioning of the system with the help of the inter-dot tunnel barriers can lead to a simplification for tuning and offers a protection against unwanted charge displacement. In a triple quantum dot system, we demonstrate a nanosecond control of the inter-dot tunnel rate permitting to reach…
Quantum dot heterostructures with excellent low-noise properties became possible with high purity materials recently. We present a study on molecular beam epitaxy grown quantum wells and quantum dots with a contaminated aluminum evaporation cell, which introduced a high amount of impurities, perceivable in anomalies in optical and electrical measurements. We describe a way of addressing this problem and find that reconditioning the aluminum cell by overheating can lead to a full recovery of the anomalies in photoluminescence and capacitance-voltage measurements, leading to excellent low noise …
We develop a generalized framework based on a Green's function formalism to calculate the efficiency of multiexciton gen-eration in nanocrystal quantum dots. The direct/indirect absorption and coherent/incoherent impact ionization mechanisms, often used to describe multiexciton generation in nanocrystals, are reviewed and rederived from the unified theory as certain approximations. In addition, two new limits are described systematically - the weak Coulomb coupling limit and the semi-wide band limit. We show that the description of multiexciton generation in nanocrystals can be described as in…
This review describes recent groundbreaking results in Si, Si/SiGe and dopant-based quantum dots, and it highlights the remarkable advances in Si-based quantum physics that have occurred in the past few years. This progress has been possible thanks to materials development for both Si quantum devices, and thanks to the physical understanding of quantum effects in silicon. Recent critical steps include the isolation of single electrons, the observation of spin blockade and single-shot read-out of individual electron spins in both dopants and gated quantum dots in Si. Each of these results has c…
