The incorporation of a small cosmological constant within radiatively-broken scale-invariant models is discussed. We show that phenomenologically consistent scale-invariant models can be constructed which allow a small positive cosmological constant, providing certain relation between the particle masses is satisfied. As a result, the mass of the dilaton is generated at two-loop level. Another interesting consequence is that the electroweak symmetry-breaking vacuum in such models is necessarily a metastable `false' vacuum which, fortunately, is not expected to decay on cosmological time scales.
We develop the thermodynamics of field theories characterized by non-local propagators. We analyze the partition function and main thermodynamic properties arising from perturbative thermal loops. We focus on the p-adic models associated with the tachyon phenomenology in string theories. We reproduce well known features of these theories, but also obtain many new results. In particular, we explain how to maintain consistency of such non-local theories by avoiding the appearance of ghosts at finite temperature. As a consequence of this fact, the vacuum energy in p-adic theories becomes positive…
This is a talk given at the conference ``Critical Dialogues in Cosmology'' at Princeton University, June 24-- 27, 1996. It gives a brief summary of our present theoretical understanding regarding the value of the cosmological constant, and describes how to calculate the probability distribution of the observed cosmological constant in cosmological theories with a large number of subuniverses (i. e., different expanding regions, or different terms in the wave function of the universe) in which this constant takes different values.
We develop a gauge-invariant formalism to describe metric perturbations in five-dimensional brane-world theories. In particular, this formalism applies to models originating from heterotic M-theory. We introduce a generalized longitudinal gauge for scalar perturbations. As an application, we discuss some aspects of the evolution of fluctuations on the brane. Moreover, we show how the five-dimensional formalism can be matched to the known four-dimensional one in the limit where an effective four-dimensional description is appropriate.
Cosmological observations provide more accurate values both for background evolution of the Universe and for the structure formation. These values are given by the so-called dark energy equation of state, $ω$ and the growth index parameter, $γ$. From these observed parameters, one can reconstruct the model functions in scalar tensor gravity theories. However, there is a long standing debate about the (in)equality between conformally transformed frames in scalar tensor gravity models. We show that cosmological observables are frame dependent when they are described by frame independent paramete…
In this paper we investigate a class of phenomenologically viable $F(R,{\cal G})$ theories that are able to avoid the cosmological constant issue. While the absence of ghosts and other kinds of instability issues is of prime importance, other reasonable requirements such as vanishing effective (low curvature) cosmological constant, including the flat space as a stable vacuum solution, are also imposed on the viable models. These are free of the cosmological constant problem thanks to the following outstanding feature: the de Sitter space is an attractor of the asymptotic cosmological dynamics,…
In the Horndeski's most general scalar-tensor theories with second-order field equations, we derive the conditions for the avoidance of ghosts and Laplacian instabilities associated with scalar, tensor, and vector perturbations in the presence of two perfect fluids on the flat Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) background. Our general results are useful for the construction of theoretically consistent models of dark energy. We apply our formulas to extended Galileon models in which a tracker solution with an equation of state smaller than -1 is present. We clarify the allowed parameter…
We investigate the effect of deviations from general relativity on approach to the initial singularity by finding exact cosmological solutions to a wide class of fourth-order gravity theories. We present new anisotropic vacuum solutions of modified Kasner type and demonstrate the extent to which they are valid in the presence of non-comoving perfect-fluid matter fields. The infinite series of Mixmaster oscillations seen in general relativity will not occur in these solutions, except in unphysical cases.
It is known that Horndeski theories can be transformed to a sub-class of Gleyzes-Langlois-Piazza-Vernizzi (GLPV) theories under the disformal transformation of the metric $g_{μν} \to Ω^2(ϕ)g_{μν}+Γ(ϕ,X) \nabla_μ ϕ\nabla_ν ϕ$, where $Ω$ is a function of a scalar field $ϕ$ and $Γ$ is another function depending on both $ϕ$ and $X=g^{μν}\nabla_μ ϕ\nabla_ν ϕ$. We show that, with the choice of unitary gauge, both curvature and tensor perturbations on the flat isotropic cosmological background are generally invariant under the disformal transformation. By means of the effective field theories encompa…
In scalar-vector-tensor (SVT) theories with parity invariance, we perform a gauge-ready formulation of cosmological perturbations on the flat Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) background by taking into account a matter perfect fluid. We derive the second-order action of scalar perturbations and resulting linear perturbation equations of motion without fixing any gauge conditions. Depending on physical problems at hand, most convenient gauges can be chosen to study the development of inhomogeneities in the presence of scalar and vector fields coupled to gravity. This versatile framewor…
A string motivated, N=1 global supersymmetric, general Lagrangian is obtained that represents an inflaton interacting with the modes of a string. Focus is placed on the Lagrangian's relevance to warm inflation, which is a cosmology based on dissipative dynamics. Several interaction schemes are identified from the general Lagrangian that may have interesting consequences for dissipative dynamics. Distributed-mass-models, which have been shown to solve the horizon problem within a warm inflation regime, are identified in the general Lagrangian.
We discuss the issue of the cosmological constant in non-commutative non-supersymmetric gauge theories. In particular, in orbifold field theories non-commutativity acts as a UV cut-off. We suggest that in these theories quantum corrections give rise to a vacuum energy ρ, that is controlled by the non-commutativity parameter θ, ρ~ 1/theta^2 (only a soft logarithmic dependence on the Planck scale survives). We demonstrate our claim in a two-loop computation in field theory and by certain higher loop examples. Based on general expressions from string theory, we suggest that the vacuum energy is c…
The late-time cosmological dynamics of disformal gravity are investigated using dynamical systems methods. It is shown that in the general case there are no stable attractors that screen fifth-forces locally and simultaneously describe a dark energy dominated universe. Viable scenarios have late-time properties that are independent of the disformal parameters and are identical to the equivalent conformal quintessence model. Our analysis reveals that configurations where the Jordan frame metric becomes singular are only reached in the infinite future, thus explaining the natural pathology resis…
In the Horndeski's most general scalar-tensor theories the equations of scalar density perturbations are derived in the presence of non-relativistic matter minimally coupled to gravity. Under a quasi-static approximation on sub-horizon scales we obtain the effective gravitational coupling $G_{eff}$ associated with the growth rate of matter perturbations as well as the effective gravitational potential $Φ_{eff}$ relevant to the deviation of light rays. We then apply our formulas to a number of modified gravitational models of dark energy--such as those based on f(R) theories, Brans-Dicke theori…
The LIGO/VIRGO collaboration has recently announced the detection of gravitational waves from a neutron star-neutron star merger (GW170817) and the simultaneous measurement of an optical counterpart (the gamma-ray burst GRB 170817A). The close arrival time of the gravitational and electromagnetic waves limits the difference in speed of photons and gravitons to be less than about one part in $10^{15}$. This has three important implications for cosmological scalar-tensor gravity theories that are often touted as dark energy candidates and alternatives to $Λ$CDM. First, for the most general scala…
We discuss domain walls and vacuum energy density (cosmological constant) in N=1 gluodynamics and in non-supersymmetric large N orientifold field theories which have been recently shown to be planar equivalent (in the boson sector) to N=1 gluodynamics. A relation between the vanishing force between two parallel walls and vanishing cosmological constant is pointed out. This relation may explain why the cosmological constant vanishes in the orientifold field theory at leading order although the hadronic spectrum of this theory does not contain fermions in the limit N-->infinity. The cancellation…
Supersymmetric theories in four dimensions with chiral superfields have very rich BRS cohomology, which gives rise to potential anomalies in theories that contain composite antichiral spinor superfields. Assuming the coefficients are non-zero, absence of the anomalies would generate new constraints on theories. In addition, the anomalies give rise to a new kind of supersymmetry breaking which is quite different from the known kinds, and also naturally yields a zero cosmological constant after supersymmetry breaking.
We propose a nonlinear massive gravitational theory which includes $F(R)$ modifications. This construction inherits the benefits of the de Rham-Gabadadze-Tolley model and is free of the Boulware-Deser ghost due to the existence of a Hamiltonian constraint accompanied by a nontrivial secondary one. The scalar perturbations in a cosmological background can be stabilized at the linear level for a wide class of the $F(R)$ models. The linear scalar mode arisen from the $F(R)$ sector can absorb the nonlinear longitudinal graviton, and hence, our scenario demonstrates the possibility of a gravitation…
The cosmic string theory for cosmological fluctuations is a good example of healthy scientific progress in cosmology. It is a well defined physically motivated model that has been tested by cosmological observations and has been ruled out as a primary source of primordial fluctuations. Until about fifteen years ago, the cosmic string theory of cosmological perturbations provided one of the two physically motivated candidate theories for the generation of primordial perturbations. The cosmological data that appeared during the last decade have been compared with the well defined predictions of …
We compute the cosmological constant in a scale invariant scalar field theory. The gravitational action is also suitably modified to respect scale invariance. Due to scale invariance the theory does not admit a cosmological constant term. The scale invariance is broken by a recently introduced mechanism called cosmological symmetry breaking. This leads to a nonzero cosmological constant. We compute the one loop corrections to the cosmological constant and show that it is finite.
We investigate f(R) theories of gravity within the Palatini approach and show how one can determine the expansion history, H(a), for an arbitrary choice of f(R). As an example, we consider cosmological constraints on such theories arising from the supernova type Ia, large scale structure formation and cosmic microwave background observations. We find that best fit to the data is a non-null leading order correction to the Einstein gravity, but the current data exhibits no significant preference over the concordance LCDM model. Our results show that the often considered 1/R models are not compat…
We investigate the cosmological consequences of particle physics theories that admit stable loops of current-carrying string - vortons. In particular, we consider chiral theories where a single fermion zero mode is excited in the string core, such as those arising in supersymmetric theories with a D-term. The resulting vortons formed in such theories are expected to be more stable than their non-chiral cousins. General symmetry breaking schemes are considered in which strings formed at one symmetry breaking scale become current-carrying at a subsequent phase transition. The vorton abundance is…
Leptogenesis in supersymmetric model is discussed comprehensively and in detail. In the first half, we discuss several leptogenesis mechanisms by the decay of heavy right-handed neutrino, which include the standard thermal leptogenesis, leptogenesis via inflaton decay, and leptogenesis from the coherent oscillation of the right-handed sneutrino. In the second half, we perform a detailed analysis on the leptogenesis via the LHu flat direction (Affleck-Dine leptogenesis).
We present a detailed study of the cosmological evolution in general vector-tensor theories of gravity without potential terms. We consider the evolution of the vector field throughout the expansion history of the universe and carry out a classification of models according to the behavior of the vector field in each cosmological epoch. We also analyze the case in which the universe is dominated by the vector field, performing a complete analysis of the system phase map and identifying those attracting solutions which give rise to accelerated expansion. Moreover, we consider the evolution in a …
A generic class of string theories predicts the existence of light moduli fields, and they are expected to have masses $m_ϕ$ comparable to the gravitino mass $m_{3/2}$ which is in a range of $10^{-2}$keV--1GeV in gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking theories. Such light fields with weak interactions suppressed by the Planck scale can not avoid some stringent cosmological constraints, that is, they suffer from `cosmological moduli problems'. We show that all the gravitino mass region $10^{-2}$keV $\lesssim m_{3/2} \lesssim$ 1GeV is excluded by the constraints even if we incorporate a late-time…
One of the major objectives of this dissertation has been the seek for inflationary models, coming from supersymmetric theories, which are compatible with recent cosmological data and, more specifically, with measurements of the spectral index from the WMAP3 data. A particular particle physics model, the extended SUSY Pati-Salam model with Yukawa quasi-unification, was examined thoroughly with respect to its cosmology and it was found that it incorporates a number of inflationary scenarios which can become compatible with recent data. The study of these scenarios brought out variations of cosm…
