The graph algebra is a commutative, cocommutative, graded, connected incidence Hopf algebra, whose basis elements correspond to finite simple graphs and whose Hopf product and coproduct admit simple combinatorial descriptions. We give a new formula for the antipode in the graph algebra in terms of acyclic orientations; our formula contains many fewer terms than Takeuchi's and Schmitt's more general formulas for the antipode in an incidence Hopf algebra. Applications include several formulas (some old and some new) for evaluations of the Tutte polynomial.
Bell polynomials appear in several combinatorial constructions throughout mathematics. Perhaps most naturally in the combinatorics of set partitions, but also when studying compositions of diffeomorphisms on vector spaces and manifolds, and in the study of cumulants and moments in probability theory. We construct commutative and noncommutative Bell polynomials and explain how they give rise to Faà di Bruno Hopf algebras. We use the language of incidence Hopf algebras, and along the way provide a new description of antipodes in noncommutative incidence Hopf algebras, involving quasideterminants…
We present a new formula for the antipode of incidence Hopf algebras. This formula is expressed as an alternating sum over forests. First, we prove the formula for incidence Hopf algebras of families of lattices by exhibiting a map from chains of a lattice to forests. Then, we extend the definition and present an analogous formula for the antipode of incidence Hopf algebras of families of posets. We characterize those families for which our formula is cancellation-free.
A lattice L is "meet-distributive" if for each element of L, the meets of the elements directly below it form a Boolean lattice. These objects are in bijection with "convex geometries", which are an abstract model of convexity. Do they give rise to an incidence Hopf algebra of convex geometries?
Starting from an operad, one can build a family of posets. From this family of posets, one can define an incidence Hopf algebra. By another construction, one can also build a group directly from the operad. We then consider its Hopf algebra of functions. We prove that there exists a surjective morphism from the latter Hopf algebra to the former one. This is illustrated by the case of an operad built on rooted trees, the $\NAP$ operad, where the incidence Hopf algebra is identified with the Connes-Kreimer Hopf algebra of rooted trees.
We adapt here the computation of characters on incidence Hopf algebras introduced by W. Schmitt in the 1990s to a family mixing bounded and unbounded posets. We then apply our results to the family of hypertree posets and partition posets. As a consequence, we obtain some enumerative formulas and a new proof for the computation of the Moebius numbers of the hypertree posets. Moreover, we compute the coproduct of the incidence Hopf algebra and recover a known formula for the number of hypertrees with fixed valency set and edge sizes set.
With any locally finite partially ordered set $K$ its incidence algebra $Ω(K)$ is associated. We shall consider algebras over fields with characteristic zero. In this case there is a correspondence $K \leftrightarrow Ω(K)$ such that the poset $K$ can be reconstructed from its incidence algebra up to an isomorphism -- due to Stanley theorem. In the meantime, a monotone mapping between two posets in general induces no homomorphism of their incidence algebras. In this paper I show that if the class of posets is confined to simplicial complexes then their incidence algebras acquire the structure o…
We consider the functions in two variables on an arbitrary poset, for which the convolution operation is defined. We obtain the generalization of incidence algebra and describe its properties: invertibility, the Jackobson radical, idempotents, regular elements. As a consequence a positive solution of the isomorphism problem for such algebras is obtained.
This manuscript stands at the interface between combinatorial Hopf algebra theory and renormalization theory. Its plan is as follows: Section 1 is the introduction, and contains as well an elementary invitation to the subject. The rest of part I, comprising Sections 2-6, is devoted to the basics of Hopf algebra theory and examples, in ascending level of complexity. Part II turns around the all-important Faa di Bruno Hopf algebra. Section 7 contains a first, direct approach to it. Section 8 gives applications of the Faa di Bruno algebra to quantum field theory and Lagrange reversion. Section 9 …
We introduce the Hopf algebra of uniform block permutations and show that it is self-dual, free, and cofree. These results are closely related to the fact that uniform block permutations form a factorizable inverse monoid. This Hopf algebra contains the Hopf algebra of permutations of Malvenuto and Reutenauer and the Hopf algebra of symmetric functions in non-commuting variables of Gebhard, Rosas, and Sagan.
Given a finite graded poset with labeled Hasse diagram, we construct a quasi- symmetric generating function for (saturated) chains whose labels have fixed descents. This is a common generalization of a generating function for the flag f-vector defined by Ehrenborg and of a symmetric function associated to certain edge-labeled posets which arose in the theory of Schubert polynomials. We show this construction gives a Hopf morphism from an incidence algebra of edge-labeled posets to the Hopf algebra of quasi-symmetric functions.
By applying a recent construction of free Baxter algebras, we obtain a new class of Hopf algebras that generalizes the classical divided power Hopf algebra. We also study conditions under which these Hopf algebras are isomorphic.
The algebraic monoid structure of an incidence algebra is investigated. We show that the multiplicative structure alone determines the algebra automorphisms of the incidence algebra. We present a formula that expresses the complexity of the incidence monoid with respect to the two sided action of its maximal torus in terms of the zeta polynomial of the poset. In addition, we characterize the finite (connected) posets whose incidence monoids have complexity $\leq 1$. Finally, we determine the covering relations of the adherence order on the incidence monoid of a star poset.
We establish a formalism for working with incidence algebras of posets with symmetries, and we develop equivariant Kazhdan-Lusztig-Stanley theory within this formalism. This gives a new way of thinking about the equivariant Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomial and equivariant Z-polynomial of a matroid.
There is a very natural and well-behaved Hopf algebra morphism from quasisymmetric functions to peak algebra, which we call it Theta map. This paper focuses on generalizing the peak algebra by constructing generalized Theta maps for an arbitrary combinatorial Hopf algebra. The image of Theta maps lies in the odd Hopf subalgebras, so we present a strategy to find odd Hopf subalgebra of any combinatorial Hopf algebra. We also give a combinatorial description of a family of Theta maps for Malvenuto-Reutenauer Hopf algebra of permutations $\operatorname{\mathsf{\mathfrak{S}Sym}}$ whose images are …
Levstein and Maldonado [F. Levstein, C. Maldonado, The Terwilliger algebra of the Johnson schemes, Discrete Mathematics 307 (2007) 1621--1635] computed the Terwilliger algebra of the Johnson scheme $J(n,m)$ when $3m\leq n$. In this paper, we determine the Terwilliger algebra of the incidence graph $J(n,m,m+1)$ of Johnson geometry when $3m\leq n$, give two bases of this algebra, and calculate its dimension.
The $n^{th}$ partial flag incidence algebra of a poset $P$ is the set of functions from $P^n$ to some ring which are zero on non-partial flag vectors. These partial flag incidence algebras for $n>2$ are not commutative, not unitary, and not associative. However, partial flag incidence algebras contain generalized zeta, delta, and Möbius functions which are finer and more delicate invariants than their classical analogues. We also study some generalized characteristic polynomials of posets which are not evaluations of Tutte polynomials and compute them for Boolean lattices. Motivation for this …
Three equivalent methods allow to compute the antipode of the Hopf algebras of Feynman diagrams in perturbative quantum field theory (QFT): the Dyson-Salam formula, the Bogoliubov formula, and the Zimmermann forest formula. Whereas the first two hold generally for arbitrary connected graded Hopf algebras, the third one requires extra structure properties of the underlying Hopf algebra but has the nice property to reduce drastically the number of terms in the expression of the antipode (it is optimal in that sense). The present article is concerned with the forest formula: we show that it genera…
A family of permutations called 2-clumped permutations forms a basis for a sub-Hopf algebra of the Malvenuto-Reutenauer Hopf algebra of permutations. The 2-clumped permutations are in bijection with certain decompositions of a square into rectangles, called generic rectangulations. Thus, we can describe the Hopf algebra of 2-clumped permutations using generic rectangulations (we call this isomorphic Hopf algebra the Hopf algebra of generic rectangulations). In this paper, we describe the cover relations in a lattice of generic rectangulations that is a lattice quotient of the right weak order …
Two important generalizations of the Hopf algebra of symmetric functions are the Hopf algebra of noncommutative symmetric functions and its graded dual the Hopf algebra of quasisymmetric functions. A common generalization of the latter is the selfdual Hopf algebra of permutations (MPR Hopf algebra). This latter Hopf algebra can be seen as a Hopf algebra of endomorphisms of a Hopf algebra. That turns out to be a fruitful way of looking at things and gives rise to wide ranging further generalizations such as the word Hopf algebra and the double word Hopf algebra (and many more).
This paper introduces the braidings of dendriform algebras and tridendriform algebras. By studying free braided dendriform algebras, we obtain braidings of the Hopf algebras of Loday and Ronco of planar binary rooted trees. We also give a variation of the braiding of Foissy for the noncommutative Connes-Kreimer (a.k.a the Foissy-Holtkamp) Hopf algebra of planar rooted forests so that the well-known isomorphism between this Hopf algebra and the Loday-Ronco Hopf algebra is extended to the braided context. As free braided tridendriform algebras, we also give braided extension of the Hopf algebra …
The explicite formulas for möbiusien function and some other important elements of the incidence algebra are delivered. For that to do one uses kwaśniewski's construction of his fibonacci cobweb poset in the plane grid coordinate system.
Consider the coradical filtrations of the Hopf algebras of planar binary trees of Loday and Ronco and of permutations of Malvenuto and Reutenauer. We give explicit isomorphisms showing that the associated graded Hopf algebras are dual to the cocommutative Hopf algebras introduced in the late 1980's by Grossman and Larson. These Hopf algebras are constructed from ordered trees and heap-ordered trees, respectively. These results follow from the fact that whenever one starts from a Hopf algebra that is a cofree graded coalgebra, the associated graded Hopf algebra is a shuffle Hopf algebra.
In the last decennia two generalizations of the Hopf algebra of symmetric functions have appeared and shown themselves important, the Hopf algebra of noncommutative symmetric functions NSymm and the Hopf algebra of quasisymmetric functions QSymm. It has also become clear that it is important to understand the noncommutative versions of such important structures as Symm the Hopf algebra of symmetric functions. Not least because the right noncommmutative versions are often more beautiful than the commutaive ones (not all cluttered up with counting coefficients). NSymm and QSymm are not truly the…
We define semi-pointed partition posets, which are a generalisation of partition posets and show that they are Cohen-Macaulay. We then use multichains to compute the dimension and the character for the action of the symmetric groups on their homology. We finally study the associated incidence Hopf algebra, which is similar to the Fa{à} di Bruno Hopf algebra.
