We solve analytically the Langevin dynamics of the classic spherical model considering the ferromagnetic exchange and a long-range antiferromagnetic interaction. Our results in the asymptotic regime, shows an equivalence in the functionality of the spatial and self-correlations between this model and the recently studied Ginzburg-Landau frustrated model within the Hartree approximation. A careful discussion is done about the low temperature behavior in the context of glassy dynamics. The appearance of interesting features regarding the establishment of the ferromagnetic phase is also analyzed in view of the effects of the spherical restriction. We propose a new variant of the spherical model in which the global restriction is substituted by an infinite set of restrictions over finite size regions. This modification leads to a new dynamical equation that suggests the appearance of the low temperature phase transition even in the non-frustrated case were the classic spherical model fails.
We study the spin-1 honeycomb lattice magnets with frustrated exchange interactions. The proposed microscopic spin model contains first and second neighbor Heisenberg interactions as well as the single-ion anisotropy. We establish a rich phase diagram that includes a featureless quantum paramagnet and various spin spiral states induced by the mechanism of order by quantum disorder. Although the quantum paramagnet is dubbed featureless, it is shown that, the magnetic excitations develop a contour degeneracy in the reciprocal space at the band minima. These contour degenerate excitations are res…
The competing magnetic ground states of the itinerant magnet EuCuSb, which has a hexagonal layered structure, were studied via magnetization, resistivity, and neutron diffraction measurements on single-crystal samples. EuCuSb has a three-dimensional semimetallic band structure as confirmed by band calculation and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy, consistent with the nearly isotropic metallic conductivity in the paramagnetic state. However, below the antiferromagnetic transition temperature of TN1 (8.5 K), the resistivity, especially along the hexagonal axis, increases significantly. T…
The description and detection of unconventional magnetic states such as spin liquids is a recurring topic in condensed matter physics. While much of the efforts have traditionally been directed at geometrically frustrated antiferromagnets, recent studies reveal that systems featuring competing antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic interactions are also promising candidate materials. We find that this competition leads to the notion of special temperatures, analogous to those of gases, at which the competing interactions balance, and the system is quasi-ideal. Although induced by weak perturbing …
Within Landau theory, magnetism and polarity are homotopic, displaying a one-to-one correspondence between most physical characteristics. However, despite widely reported noncollinear magnetism, spontaneous noncollinear electric dipole order as ground state is rare. Here a dioxydihalides family is predicted to display noncollinear ferrielectricity, induced by competing ferroelectric and antiferroelectric soft modes. This intrinsic noncollinearity of dipoles generates unique physical properties, such as $\mathbb{Z}_2\times\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological domains, atomic-scale dipole vortices, and nega…

The quench dynamics of a system involving two competing orders is investigated using a Ginzburg-Landau theory with relaxational dynamics. We consider the scenario where a pump rapidly heats the system to a high temperature, after which the system cools down to its equilibrium temperature. We study the evolution of the order parameter amplitude and fluctuations in the resulting time dependent free energy landscape. Exponentially growing thermal fluctuations dominate the dynamics. The system typically evolves into the phase associated with the faster-relaxing order parameter, even if it is not t…
Amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) is an important precursor for biomineralisation in marine organisms. Among the key outstanding problems regarding ACC are how best to understand its structure and how to rationalise its metastability as an amorphous phase. Here, we report high-quality atomistic models of ACC generated by using state-of-the-art interatomic potentials to help guide fits to X-ray total scattering data. Exploiting a recently-developed inversion approach, we extract from these models the effective Ca$\boldsymbol\cdots$Ca interaction potential governing ACC formation. This potential…
The pyrochlore material Nd$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$ with an "all-in-all-out" (AIAO) magnetic order shows novel quantum moment fragmentation with gapped flat dynamical spin ice modes. The parameterized spin Hamiltonian with a dominant frustrated ferromagnetic transverse term reveals a proximity to a U(1) spin liquid. Here we study magnetic excitations of Nd$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$ above the ordering temperature ($T_\text{N}$) using high-energy-resolution inelastic neutron scattering. We find strong spin ice correlations at zero energy with the disappearance of gapped magnon excitations of the AIAO order. It seems…

Hybrid quantum-classical algorithms have been proposed as a potentially viable application of quantum computers. A particular example - the variational quantum eigensolver, or VQE - is designed to determine a global minimum in an energy landscape specified by a quantum Hamiltonian, which makes it appealing for the needs of quantum chemistry. Experimental realizations have been reported in recent years and theoretical estimates of its efficiency are a subject of intense effort. Here we consider the performance of the VQE technique for a Hubbard-like model describing a one-dimensional chain of f…
