We present an analysis of the properties of the lowest Halpha-luminosity galaxies (L_Halpha<4x10^32 W; SFR<0.02 Msun/yr) in the Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey. These galaxies make up the the rise above a Schechter function in the number density of systems seen at the faint end of the Halpha luminosity function. Above our flux limit we find that these galaxies are principally composed of intrinsically low stellar mass systems (median stellar mass =2.5x10^8 Msun) with only 5/90 having stellar masses M>10^10 Msun. The low SFR systems are found to exist predominantly in the lowest density environments (median density ~0.02 galaxy Mpc^-2 with none in environments more dense than ~1.5 galaxy Mpc^-2). Their current specific star formation rates (SSFR; -8.5 < log(SSFR[yr^-1])<-12.) are consistent with their having had a variety of star formation histories. The low density environments of these galaxies demonstrates that such low-mass, star-forming systems can only remain as low-mass and forming stars if they reside sufficiently far from other galaxies to avoid being accreted, dispersed through tidal effects or having their gas reservoirs rendered ineffective through external processes.
Measurements of the low-z Halpha luminosity function have a large dispersion in the local number density of sources, and correspondingly in the SFR density. The possible causes for these discrepancies include limited volume sampling, biases arising from survey sample selection, different methods of correcting for dust obscuration and AGN contamination. The Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey and Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) provide deep spectroscopic observations over a wide sky area enabling detection of a large sample of star-forming galaxies spanning 0.001<SFR(Halpha)<100 with which t…
We present observations of 18 galaxies from the Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey made with the SPIRAL optical integral field unit (IFU) on the Anglo-Australian Telescope. The galaxies are selected to have a narrow range in stellar mass (6x10^9Msolar < M* <2x10^10 Msolar) in order to focus on the effects of environment. Local galaxy environments are measured quantitatively using 5th nearest neighbour surface densities. We find that the total star formation rates (SFR) measured from the IFU data are consistent with total SFRs measured from aperture correcting either GAMA or Sloan Digital S…
The galaxy pairwise velocity dispersion (PVD) can provide important tests of non-standard gravity and galaxy formation models. We describe measurements of the PVD of galaxies in the Galaxy and Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey as a function of projected separation and galaxy luminosity. Due to the faint magnitude limit ($r < 19.8$) and highly-complete spectroscopic sampling of the GAMA survey, we are able to reliably measure the PVD to smaller scales ($r_\bot = 0.01$ Mpc/h) than previous work. The measured PVD at projected separations $r_\bot <~ 1$ Mpc/h increases near-monotonically with increasing …
Aiming at the detection of cosmological gas being accreted onto galaxies of the local Universe, we examined the Halpha emission in the halo of 164 galaxies in the field of view of the Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer Wide survey (\musew ) with observable Halpha (redshift < 0.42). An exhaustive screening of the corresponding Halpha images led us to select 118 reliable Halpha emitting gas clouds. The signals are faint, with a surface brightness of 10**(-17.3 pm 0.3) erg/s/cm2/arcsec2. Through statistical tests and other arguments, we ruled out that they are created by instrumental artifacts, te…
We present evidence for stochastic star formation histories in low-mass (M* < 10^10 Msun) galaxies from observations within the Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey. For ~73,000 galaxies between 0.05<z<0.32, we calculate star formation rates (SFR) and specific star formation rates (SSFR = SFR/M*) from spectroscopic Halpha measurements and apply dust corrections derived from Balmer decrements. We find a dependence of SSFR on stellar mass, such that SSFRs decrease with increasing stellar mass for star-forming galaxies, and for the full sample, SSFRs decrease as a stronger function of stellar m…
Spectroscopic observations of Halpha and Hbeta emission lines of 128 star-forming galaxies in the redshift range 0.75<z<1.5 are presented. These data were taken with slitless spectroscopy using the G102 and G141 grisms of the Wide-Field-Camera 3 (WFC3) on board the Hubble Space Telescope as part of the WFC3 Infrared Spectroscopic Parallel (WISP) survey. Interstellar dust extinction is measured from stacked spectra that cover the Balmer decrement (Halpha/Hbeta). We present dust extinction as a function of Halpha luminosity (down to 3 x 10^{41} erg/s), galaxy stellar mass (reaching 4 x 10^{8} Ms…
The Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey furnishes a deep redshift catalog that, when combined with the Wide-field Infrared Explorer ($WISE$), allows us to explore for the first time the mid-infrared properties of $> 110, 000$ galaxies over 120 deg$^2$ to $z\simeq 0.5$. In this paper we detail the procedure for producing the matched GAMA-$WISE$ catalog for the G12 and G15 fields, in particular characterising and measuring resolved sources; the complete catalogs for all three GAMA equatorial fields will be made available through the GAMA public releases. The wealth of multiwavelength photomet…
We present self-consistent star formation rates derived through pan-spectral analysis of galaxies drawn from the Galaxy and Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey. We determine the most appropriate form of dust obscuration correction via application of a range of extinction laws drawn from the literature as applied to Halpha, [O{II}] and UV luminosities. These corrections are applied to a sample of 31,508 galaxies from the GAMA survey at z < 0.35. We consider several different obscuration curves, including those of Milky Way, Calzetti (2001) and Fischera and Dopita (2005) curves and their effects on the …
Galaxy and Mass Assembly (GAMA) is a project to study galaxy formation and evolution, combining imaging data from ultraviolet to radio with spectroscopic data from the AAOmega spectrograph on the Anglo-Australian Telescope. Using data from phase 1 of GAMA, taken over three observing seasons, and correcting for various minor sources of incompleteness, we calculate galaxy luminosity functions (LFs) and their evolution in the ugriz passbands. At low redshift, z < 0.1, we find that blue galaxies, defined according to a magnitude-dependent but non-evolving colour cut, are reasonably well fit over a…
We present bivariate luminosity and stellar mass functions of H$α$ star forming galaxies drawn from the Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey. While optically deep spectroscopic observations of GAMA over a wide sky area enable the detection of a large number of $0.001<{SFR}_{Hα}$ (M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$)$<100$ galaxies, the requirement for an H$α$ detection in targets selected from an $r$-band magnitude limited survey leads to an incompleteness due to missing optically faint star forming galaxies. Using $z<0.1$ bivariate distributions as a reference we model the higher-$z$ distributions, there…
We investigate the nature of 24micron sources in M33 which have weak or no associated Halpha emission. Both bright evolved stars and embedded star forming regions are visible as compact infrared sources in the 8 and 24micron maps of M33 and contribute to the more diffuse and faint emission in these bands. Can we distinguish the two populations? We carry out deep CO J=2-1 and J=1-0 line searches at the location of compact mid-IR sources to unveil an ongoing star formation process. We use different assumptions to estimate cloud masses from pointed observations and analyze if SED and mid-IR colou…
We measure the two-point angular correlation function of a sample of 4,289,223 galaxies with r < 19.4 mag from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey as a function of photometric redshift, absolute magnitude and colour down to M_r - 5log h = -14 mag. Photometric redshifts are estimated from ugriz model magnitudes and two Petrosian radii using the artificial neural network package ANNz, taking advantage of the Galaxy and Mass Assembly (GAMA) spectroscopic sample as our training set. The photometric redshifts are then used to determine absolute magnitudes and colours. For all our samples, we estimate the …
The Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey is a multiwavelength photometric and spectroscopic survey, using the AAOmega spectrograph on the Anglo-Australian Telescope to obtain spectra for up to ~300000 galaxies over 280 square degrees, to a limiting magnitude of r_pet < 19.8 mag. The target galaxies are distributed over 0<z<0.5 with a median redshift of z~0.2, although the redshift distribution includes a small number of systems, primarily quasars, at higher redshifts, up to and beyond z=1. The redshift accuracy ranges from sigma_v~50km/s to sigma_v~100km/s depending on the signal-to-noise of…
We report the discovery of a significant excess of candidate Halpha emitters (HAEs) in the field of the radio galaxy 4C 23.56 at z=2.483. Using the MOIRCS near-infrared imager on the Subaru Telescope we found 11 candidate emission-line galaxies to a flux limit of ~7.5 10^-17 erg s-1 cm-2, which is about 5 times excess from the expected field counts with ~3-sigma significance. Three of these are spectroscopically confirmed as redshifted Halpha at z=2.49. The distribution of candidate emitters on the sky is tightly confined to a 1.2-Mpc-radius area at z=2.49, locating 4C 23.56 at the western edg…
We investigate the contentious issue of the presence, or lack thereof, of satellites mass segregation in galaxy groups using the Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey, the GALFORM semi-analytic and the EAGLE cosmological hydrodynamical simulation catalogues of galaxy groups. We select groups with halo mass $12 \leqslant \log(M_{\text{halo}}/h^{-1}M_\odot) <14.5$ and redshift $z \leqslant 0.32$ and probe the radial distribution of stellar mass out to twice the group virial radius. All the samples are carefully constructed to be complete in stellar mass at each redshift range and efforts are ma…
The Smithsonian Hectospec Lensing Survey (SHELS) is a window on the star formation history over the last 4 Gyr. SHELS is a spectroscopically complete survey for Rtot < 20.3 over 4 square degrees. We use the 10k spectra to select a sample of pure star forming galaxies based on their Halpha emission line. We use the spectroscopy to determine extinction corrections for individual galaxies and to remove active galaxies in order to reduce systematic uncertainties. We use the large volume of SHELS with the depth of a narrowband survey for Halpha galaxies at z ~ 0.24 to make a combined determination …
Statistical studies of galaxy-galaxy interactions often utilise net change in physical properties of progenitors as a function of the separation between their nuclei to trace both the strength and the observable timescale of their interaction. In this study, we use two-point auto, cross and mark correlation functions to investigate the extent to which small-scale clustering properties of star forming galaxies can be used to gain physical insight into galaxy-galaxy interactions between galaxies of similar optical brightness and stellar mass. The Halpha star formers, drawn from the highly spatia…
We present a large-scale clustering analysis of radio galaxies in the Very Large Array (VLA) Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty-cm (FIRST) survey over the Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey area, limited to S1.4 GHz >1 mJy with spectroscopic and photometric redshift limits up to r < 19.8 and r < 22 mag, respectively. For the GAMA spectroscopic matches, we present the redshift-space and projected correlation functions, the latter of which yielding a correlation length r0 ~ 8.2 Mpc/h and linear bias of ~1.9 at z ~ 0.34. Furthermore, we use the angular two-point correlation function w(θ)…
We present an analysis of the mid-infrared WISE sources seen within the equatorial GAMA G12 field, located in the North Galactic Cap. Our motivation is to study and characterize the behavior of WISE source populations in anticipation of the deep multi-wavelength surveys that will define the next decade, with the principal science goal of mapping the 3D large scale structures and determining the global physical attributes of the host galaxies. In combination with cosmological redshifts, we identify galaxies from their WISE W1 3.4um resolved emission, and by performing a star-galaxy separation u…
We present the capabilities of Galapagos--2 and Galfitm in the context of fitting 2-component profiles to galaxies, on the way to providing complete multi-band, multi-component fitting of large samples of galaxies in future surveys. We release both the code and the fit results to 234,239 objects from the DR3 of the Gama survey, a sample significantly deeper than previous works. We use stringent tests on both simulated and real data, as well as comparison to public catalogues to evaluate the advantages of using multi-band over single-band data. We show that multi-band fitting using Galfitm prov…
In order to generate credible 0.1-2 μm SEDs, the GAMA project requires many Gigabytes of imaging data from a number of instruments to be re-processed into a standard format. In this paper we discuss the software infrastructure we use, and create self-consistent ugrizYJHK photometry for all sources within the GAMA sample. Using UKIDSS and SDSS archive data, we outline the pre-processing necessary to standardise all images to a common zeropoint, the steps taken to correct for seeing bias across the dataset, and the creation of Gigapixel-scale mosaics of the three 4x12 deg GAMA regions in each fi…
It has been suggested that diffuse ionized gas can extend all the way to the end of the HI disc, and even beyond, such as in the case of the warped galaxy NGC 253 (Bland-Hawthorn et al. 1997). Detecting ionized gas at these radii could carry significant implications as to the distribution of dark matter in galaxies. With the aim of detecting this gas, we carried out a deep Halpha kinematical analysis of two Sculptor group galaxies, NGC 247 and NGC 300. The Fabry-Perot data were taken at the 36-cm Marseille Telescope in La Silla, Chile, offering a large field of view. With almost 20 hours of ob…
We measure the projected cross-correlation between low redshift (z < 0.5) far-IR selected galaxies in the SDP field of the Herschel-ATLAS (H-ATLAS) survey and optically selected galaxies from the Galaxy and Mass Assembly (GAMA) redshift survey. In order to obtain robust correlation functions, we restrict the analysis to a subset of 969 out of 6900 H-ATLAS galaxies, which have reliable optical counterparts with r<19.4 mag and well-determined spectroscopic redshifts. The overlap region between the two surveys is 12.6 sq. deg; the matched sample has a median redshift of z ~ 0.2. The cross-correla…
The use of realistic mock galaxy catalogues is essential in the preparation of large galaxy surveys, in order to test and validate theoretical models and to assess systematics. We present an updated version of the mock catalogue constructed from the Millennium-XXL simulation, which uses a halo occupation distribution (HOD) method to assign galaxies r-band magnitudes and g-r colours. We have made several modifications to the mock to improve the agreement with measurements from the SDSS and GAMA surveys. We find that cubic interpolation, which was used to build the original halo lightcone, produ…
We investigate how different mid-infrared (mid-IR) properties of galaxies trace the environment in which the galaxies are located. For this purpose, we first study the dependence of galaxy clustering on the absolute magnitude at 3.4 $μ$m and redshift. Then, we look into the environmental dependence of mid-IR luminosities and the galaxy properties derived from these luminosities. We also explore how various infrared galaxy luminosity selections influence the galaxy clustering measurements. We use a set of W1 (3.4 $μ$m) absolute magnitude ($M_\text{W1}$) selected samples from the Galaxy and Mass…
NGC3367 is a nearby isolated active galaxy that shows a radio jet, a strong bar and evidence of lopsidedness. We present a quantitative analysis of the stellar and gaseous structure of the galaxy disk and a search for evidence of recent interaction based on new UBVRI Halpha and JHK images and on archival Halpha Fabry-Perot and HI VLA data. From a coupled 1D/2D GALFIT bulge/bar/disk decomposition an (B/D ~ 0.07-0.1) exponential pseudobulge is inferred in all the observed bands. A NIR estimate of the bar strength <Q_T{max}(R)> = 0.44 places NGC 3367 bar among the strongest ones. The asymmetry pr…
We present ultraviolet integrated and azimuthally-averaged surface photometric properties of a sample of 44 dIm, BCD, and Sm galaxies measured from archival NUV and FUV images obtained with GALEX. We compare the UV to Halpha and V-band properties and convert FUV, Halpha, and V-band luminosities into star formation rates (SFRs). We also model the star formation history from colors and compare the integrated SFRs and SFR profiles with radius for these methods. In most galaxies, the UV photometry extends beyond Halpha in radius, providing a better measure of the star formation activity in the out…
We studied the star cluster population properties in the nearby collisional ring galaxy NGC 922 using HST/WFPC2 photometry and population synthesis modeling. We found that 69% of the detected clusters are younger than 7 Myr, and that most of them are located in the ring or along the bar, consistent with the strong Halpha emission. The images also show a tidal plume pointing toward the companion. Its stellar age is consistent with pre-existing stars that were probably stripped off during the passage of the companion. We compared the star-forming complexes observed in NGC 922 with those of a dis…
Several recent studies have shown that about half of the massive galaxies at z~2 are in a quiescent phase. Moreover, these galaxies are commonly found to be ultra-compact with half-light radii of ~1 kpc. We have obtained a ~29 hr spectrum of a typical quiescent, ultra-dense galaxy at z=2.1865 with the Gemini Near-Infrared Spectrograph. The spectrum exhibits a strong optical break and several absorption features, which have not previously been detected in z>2 quiescent galaxies. Comparison of the spectral energy distribution with stellar population synthesis models implies a low star formation …
We have used the zCOSMOS-bright 10k sample to identify 3244 Spitzer/MIPS 24-micron-selected galaxies with 0.06< S(24um)< 0.50 mJy and I(AB)<22.5, over 1.5 deg^2 of the COSMOS field, and studied different spectral properties, depending on redshift. At 0.2<z<0.3, we found that different reddening laws of common use in the literature explain the dust extinction properties of around 80% of our infrared (IR) sources, within the error bars. For up to 16% of objects, instead, the Halpha/Hbeta ratios are too high for their IR/UV attenuations, which is probably a consequence of inhomogenous dust distri…
We have conducted a systematic search of low-mass black holes (BHs) in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) with broad Halpha emission lines, aiming at building a homogeneous sample that is more complete than previous ones for fainter, less highly accreting sources. For this purpose, we developed a set of elaborate, automated selection procedures and applied it uniformly to the Fourth Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Special attention is given to AGN--galaxy spectral decomposition and emission-line deblending. We define a sample of 309 type 1 AGNs with BH masses in the range $8 \times 10…
We compare star formation in the inner and outer disks of 11 dwarf Irregular galaxies (dIm) within 3.6 Mpc. The regions are identified on GALEX near-UV images, and modeled with UV, optical, and near-IR colors to determine masses and ages. A few galaxies have made 10^5-10^6 Msun complexes in a starburst phase, while others have not formed clusters in the last 50 Myrs. The maximum region mass correlates with the number of regions as expected from the size-of-sample effect. We find no radial gradients in region masses and ages, even beyond the realm of Halpha emission, although there is an expone…
We present SN 2020jfo, a Type IIP supernova in the nearby galaxy M61. Optical light curves from the Zwicky Transient Facility, complemented with data from Swift and near-IR photometry are presented. The 350-day duration bolometric light curve exhibits a relatively short (~ 65 days) plateau. This implies a moderate ejecta mass (~ 5 Msun). A series of spectroscopy is presented, including spectropolarimetric observations. The nebular spectra are dominated by Halpha but also reveal emission lines from oxygen and calcium. Comparisons to synthetic nebular spectra indicate an initial progenitor mass …
We investigate the `Local Hole', an anomalous under-density in the local galaxy environment, by extending our previous galaxy $K-$band number-redshift and number-magnitude counts to $\approx 90\%$ of the sky. Our redshift samples are taken from the 2MASS Redshift Survey (2MRS) and the 2M++ catalogues, limited to $K<11.5$. We find that both surveys are in good agreement, showing an $\approx 21-22\%$ under-density at $z<0.075$ when compared to our homogeneous counts model that assumes the same luminosity function and other parameters as in our earlier papers. Using the Two Micron All Sky Survey …
We examine the luminosity function (LF) of [OII] emission-line galaxies in the high-resolution cosmological simulation MassiveBlack-II (MBII). From the spectral energy distribution of each galaxy, we select a sub-sample of star-forming galaxies at $0.06 \le z \le 3.0$ using the [OII] emission line luminosity L([OII]). We confirm that the specific star formation rate matches that in the GAMA survey. We show that the [OII] LF at z=1.0 from the MBII shows a good agreement with the LFs from several surveys below L([OII])=$10^{43.0}$ erg/s while the low redshifts ($z \le 0.3$) show an excess in the…

We present a Bayesian hierarchical forward model for mapping the local luminosity-density field from heterogeneous redshift surveys. By dividing the survey volume into angular cells and redshift shells, we model the observed galaxy distribution directly in apparent-magnitude and redshift space. This allows us to infer cell-level luminosity functions and densities while preserving each survey's unique selection function. Simultaneously, the ensemble of cells constrains the cosmic-mean luminosity function, its redshift evolution, and the hyperparameters describing cell-to-cell variation. We appl…
