We report the discovery of a significant excess of candidate Halpha emitters (HAEs) in the field of the radio galaxy 4C 23.56 at z=2.483. Using the MOIRCS near-infrared imager on the Subaru Telescope we found 11 candidate emission-line galaxies to a flux limit of ~7.5 10^-17 erg s-1 cm-2, which is about 5 times excess from the expected field counts with ~3-sigma significance. Three of these are spectroscopically confirmed as redshifted Halpha at z=2.49. The distribution of candidate emitters on the sky is tightly confined to a 1.2-Mpc-radius area at z=2.49, locating 4C 23.56 at the western edge of the distribution. Analysis of the deep Spitzer MIPS 24 mu m imaging shows that there is also an excess of faint MIPS sources. All but two of the 11 HAEs are also found in the MIPS data. The inferred star-formation rate (SFR) of the HAEs based on the extinction-corrected Halpha luminosity (median SFR >~100 M_solar yr-1) is similar to those of HAEs in random fields at z~2. On the other hand, the MIPS-based SFR for the HAEs is on average 3.6 times larger, suggesting the existence of the star-formation significanly obscured by dust. The comparison of the Halpha-based star-formation activities of the HAEs in the 4C 23.56 field to those in another proto-cluster around PKS 1138-262 at z=2.16 reveals that the latter tend to have fainter Halpha emission despite similar K-band magnitudes. This suggests that star-formation may be suppressed in the PKS 1138-262 protocluster relative to the 4C 23.56 protocluster. This difference among the HAEs in the two proto-clusters at z > 2 may imply that some massive cluster galaxies are just forming at these epochs with some variation among clusters.
We present evidence for unusually strong Halpha emission in galaxies with spectroscopic redshifts in the range of 3.8<z<5.0, over the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS) fields. Among 74 galaxies detected in the Spitzer IRAC 3.6 and 4.5um bands, more than 70% of the galaxies show clear excess at 3.6um compared to the expected flux density from stellar continuum only. We provide evidence that this 3.6um excess is due to Halpha emission redshifted into the 3.6um band, and classify these 3.6um excess galaxies to be Halpha emitter (HAE) candidates. The selection of HAE candidates using…
Strong Halpha Emitters (HAEs) dominate the z~4 Lyman-break galaxy population. We have identified local analogs of these HAEs using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). At z<0.4, only 0.04% of galaxies are classified as HAEs with Halpha equivalent widths (>500A) comparable to that of z~4 HAEs. Local HAEs have lower stellar mass and lower ultraviolet (UV) luminosity than z~4 HAEs, yet the Halpha-to-UV luminosity ratio as well as their specific star-formation rate is consistent with that of z~4 HAEs indicating that they are scaled down versions of high-z star-forming galaxies. Compared to the pre…
The future space missions Euclid and WFIRST-AFTA will use the Halpha emission line to measure the redshifts of tens of millions of galaxies. The Halpha luminosity function at z>0.7 is one of the major sources of uncertainty in forecasting cosmological constraints from these missions. We construct unified empirical models of the Halpha luminosity function spanning the range of redshifts and line luminosities relevant to the redshift surveys proposed with Euclid and WFIRST-AFTA. By fitting to observed luminosity functions from Halpha surveys, we build three models for its evolution. Different fi…
We study a large galaxy sample from the Spitzer Matching Survey of the UltraVISTA ultra-deep Stripes (SMUVS) to search for sources with enhanced 3.6 micron fluxes indicative of strong Halpha emission at z=3.9-4.9. We find that the percentage of "Halpha excess" sources reaches 37-40% for galaxies with stellar masses log10(M*/Msun) ~ 9-10, and decreases to <20% at log10(M*/Msun) ~ 10.7. At higher stellar masses, however, the trend reverses, although this is likely due to AGN contamination. We derive star formation rates (SFR) and specific SFR (sSFR) from the inferred Halpha equivalent widths (EW…
We present the results of a deep, near-infrared, narrow band imaging survey at a central wavelength of 1.062 microns (FWHM=0.01 microns) in the GOODS-South field using the ESO VLT instrument, HAWK-I. The data are used to carry out the highest redshift search for [OII]3727 emission line galaxies to date. The images reach an emission line flux limit (5 sigma) of 1.5 x 10^-17 erg cm^-2 s^-1, additionally making the survey the deepest of its kind at high redshift. In this paper we identify a sample of [OII]3727 emission line objects at redshift z~1.85 in a co-moving volume of ~4100 Mpc^3. Objects …
We present first results from a narrowband imaging program for intermediate redshift emission-line galaxies using the newly commissioned FourStar infrared camera at the 6.5m Magellan telescope. To enable prompt identification of Hα emitters, a pair of custom 1% filters, which sample low-airglow atmospheric windows at 1.19 μm and 2.10 μm, is used to detect both Hα and [OII]λ3727 emission from the same redshift volume at z=2.2. Initial observations are taken over a 130 arcmin^2 area in the CANDELS-COSMOS field. The exquisite image quality resulting from the combination of the instrument, telesco…
JWST ASPIRE: How Did Galaxies Complete Reionization? Evidence for Excess IGM Transmission around ${\rm [O\,{\scriptstyle III}]}$ Emitters during Reionization
We present empirical relations between the global dust reddening and other physical galaxy properties including the Halpha luminosity, Halpha surface brightness, metallicity and axial ratio for star-forming disc galaxies. The study is based on a large sample of ~22 000 well-defined star-forming galaxies selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The reddening parameterized by color excess E(B-V) is derived from the Balmer decrement. Besides the dependency of reddening on Halpha luminosity / surface brightness and gas phase metallicity, it is also correlated with the galaxy inclination,…
A complex of Halpha emitting blobs with strong FUV excess is associated to the dIrr galaxy VCC1217 / IC3418 (Hester et al. 2010), and extends up to 17 Kpc in the South-East direction. These outstanding features can be morphologically divided into diffuse filaments and compact knots, where most of the star formation activity traced by Halpha takes place. We investigate the properties of the galaxy and the blobs using a multiwavelength approach in order to constrain their origin. We collect publicly available data in UV and Halpha and observe the scene in the optical U,g,r,i bands with LBT. The …
We have measured the near-infrared colors and the fluxes of individual pixels in 68 galaxies common to the Spitzer Infrared Nearby Galaxies Survey and the Large Galaxy Atlas Survey. Each galaxy was separated into regions of increasingly red near-infrared colors. In the absence of dust extinction and other non-stellar emission, stellar populations are shown to have relatively constant NIR colors, independent of age. In regions of high star formation, the average intensity of pixels in red-excess regions (at 1.25, 3.6, 4.5, 5.6, 8.0 and 24 micron) scales linearly with the intrinsic intensity of …
We present a panoramic narrow-band imaging survey of [OII] emitters in and around the ClG J0218.3-0510 cluster at z=1.62 with Suprime-Cam on Subaru telescope. 352 [OII] emitters were identified on the basis of narrow-band excesses and photometric redshifts. We discovered a huge filamentary structure with some clumps traced by [OII] emitters and found that the ClG J0218.3-0510 cluster is embedded in an even larger super-structure than the one reported previously. 31 [OII] emitters were spectroscopically confirmed with the detection of H-alpha and/or [OIII] emission lines by FMOS observations. I…
Identifying a protocluster formation at z $\sim$ 4.5 in the COSMOS field: an extension of Taralay protocluster, traced by Ly-alpha emitters surrounding a submm galaxy
We investigated the fraction of [OII] emitters in galaxies at z~0.9 as a function of the local galaxy density in the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) COSMOS 2 square degree field. [OII] emitters are selected by the narrow-band excess technique with the NB711-band imaging data taken with Suprime-Cam on the Subaru telescope. We carefully selected 614 photo-z selected galaxies with M_U3500 < -19.31 at z=0.901-0.920, which includes 195 [OII] emitters, to directly compare results with our previous study at z~1.2. We found that the fraction is almost constant at 0.3 Mpc^-2 < Sigma_10th < 10 Mpc^-2. We a…
We present a panoramic narrow-band study of H-alpha emitters in the field of the z=2.16 proto-cluster around PKS1138-262 using MOIRCS on the Subaru Telescope. We find 83 H-alpha emitters down to a SFR(Ha)~10Msun/yr across a ~7'x7' region centered on the radio galaxy, and identify ~10-Mpc scale filaments of emitters running across this region. By examining the properties of H-alpha emitters within the large-scale structure, we find that galaxies in the higher-density environments at z=2.16 tend to have redder colours and higher stellar masses compared to galaxies in more underdense regions. We …
We present results from a ~100 ks Chandra observation of the 2QZ Cluster 1004+00 structure at z = 2.23 (hereafter, 2QZ Clus). 2QZ Clus was originally identified as an overdensity of four optically-selected QSOs at z = 2.23 within a 15x15 arcmin^2 region. Narrow-band imaging in the near-IR revealed that the structure contains an additional overdensity of 22 z = 2.23 Halpha-emitting galaxies (HAEs), resulting in 23 unique z = 2.23 HAEs/QSOs. Our Chandra observations reveal that 3 HAEs in addition to the 4 QSOs harbor powerfully accreting supermassive black holes (SMBHs), with 2-10 keV luminositi…
(abridged) We present a study of stellar population of LAEs at z=4.86 in GOODS-N and its flanking field. With the publicly available IRAC data in GOODS-N and further IRAC observations in the flanking fields, we select five LAEs which are not contaminated by neighboring objects in IRAC images and construct their observed SEDs with I_c, z', IRAC 3.6micron, and 4.5micron band photometry. The SEDs cover the rest-frame UV to optical wavelengths. We derive stellar masses, ages, color excesses, and star formation rates of five LAEs using SED fitting method. Assuming the constant star formation histor…
A deep Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph map of the PKS 1138-26 galaxy protocluster reveals ultraluminous PAH emission from obscured star formation in three protocluster galaxies, including Halpha-emitter (HAE) 229, HAE 131, and the central Spiderweb Galaxy. Star formation rates of 500-1100 Msun/yr are estimated from the 7.7 micron PAH feature. At such prodigious formation rates, the galaxy stellar masses will double in 0.6-1.1 Gyr. We are viewing the peak epoch of star formation for these protocluster galaxies. However, it appears that extinction of Halpha is much greater (factor of 40) in the tw…
We observed star-forming galaxies at z~1.5 selected from the HyperSuprimeCam Subaru Strategic Program. The galaxies are part of two significant overdensities of [OII] emitters identified via narrow-band imaging and photometric redshifts from grizy photometry. We used VLT/KMOS to carry out Halpha integral field spectroscopy of 46 galaxies in total. Ionized gas maps, star formation rates and velocity fields were derived from the Halpha emission line. We quantified morphological and kinematical asymmetries to test for potential gravitational (e.g. galaxy-galaxy) or hydrodynamical (e.g. ram-pressu…
Combining cosmological SPH simulations with a previously developed Lyman Alpha production/transmission model and the Early Reionization Model (ERM, reionization ends at redshift z~7), we obtain Lyman Alpha and UV Luminosity Functions (LFs) for Lyman Alpha Emitters (LAEs) for redshifts between 5.7 and 7.6. Matching model results to observations at z~5.7 requires escape fractions of Lyman Alpha, f_alpha=0.3, and UV (non-ionizing) continuum photons, f_c=0.22, corresponding to a color excess, E(B-V)=0.15. We find that (i) f_c increases towards higher redshifts, due the decreasing mean dust content…
We have performed deep imaging surveys for LyA emitters (LAEs) at redshift ~7.3 in two blank fields, the Subaru Deep Field (SDF) and the Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep survey Field (SXDF), using the Subaru/Suprime-Cam equipped with new red-sensitive CCDs and a new narrow-band filter, NB1006 (lambda_c=10052 Ang, FWHM=214 Ang). We identified four objects as LAE candidates that exhibit luminosity excess in NB1006. By carrying out deep follow-up spectroscopy for three of them using Subaru/FOCAS and Keck/DEIMOS, a definitively asymmetric emission line is detected for one of them, SXDF-NB1006-2. Assuming th…
Observations of the high redshift Universe through narrow-band filters have proven very successful in the last decade. The 4-meter VISTA telescope, equipped with the wide-field camera VIRCAM, offers a major step forward in wide-field near-infrared imaging, and in order to utilise VISTA's large field-of-view and sensitivity, the Dark Cosmology Centre provided a set of 16 narrow-band filters for VIRCAM. These NB118 filters are centered at a wavelength near 1.19 micron in a region with few airglow emission lines. The filters allow the detection of Halpha emitters at z = 0.8, Hbeta and [OIII] emit…
We present a narrowband survey with three adjacent filters for z=2.8--2.9 Lyman Alpha Emitter (LAE) galaxies in the Extended Chandra Deep Field South (ECDFS), along with spectroscopic followup. With a complete sample of 96 LAEs in the narrowband NB466, we confirm a large-scale structure at z~ 2.8. Compared to the blank field in NB470 and NB475, the LAE density excess in the NB466 field is ~6.0+/-0.8 times the standard deviation expected at z~2.8, assuming a linear bias of 2. The overdense large scale structure in NB466 can be decomposed into 4 protoclusters, whose overdensities are 4.6 - 6.6. …
Cluster star-forming galaxies are found to have an excess of Far-Infrared emission relative to H-alpha (Ha), when compared to those in the field, which could be caused by intense AGN activity, dust and/or declining star formation histories. Here we present spectroscopic observations of Ha emitters in the Cl 0939+4713 (Abell 851) super-cluster at z=0.41, using AF2+WYFFOS on the WHT. We measure [OII], Hbeta (Hb), [OIII], Ha and [NII] for a sample of 119 Ha emitters in and around the cluster. We find that 17+-5% of the Ha emitters are AGN, irrespective of environment. For star-forming galaxies, w…
