We extract two-photon exchange amplitudes for the elastic electron-proton scattering at Q^2=2.5 GeV^2 from the unpolarized cross-section and recent polarization transfer measurements. There are three independent amplitudes, but only one of them, δG_M, can be determined with a reasonable accuracy(about 10%). The result is in good agreement with theoretical predictions. Rough estimates for two other amplitudes are obtained.
A parameterization of the $\bar pp$ differential elastic scattering cross section in the beam momentum range from 2 to 16 GeV/c is proposed. The parameterization well describes the existing data including the observed diffraction pattern at four-momentum transfer $|t|$ up to 1.5-2.0 GeV$^2$. It can be used for detailed calculations of the radiation load on the detectors being designed for the PANDA detector at the future FAIR facility in Darmstadt.
We carry out a relativistic calculation of the cross sections of electron-16O and -12C quasi-elastic scattering and quasi-free Delta production and compare with the (e,e') data systematically in the wide energy range of 0.5 - 1.5 GeV. Using the same formalism, we examine the mu-neutrino quasi-elastic scattering from 16O. The model incorporating the nuclear correlation effects agrees better with the electron-nucleus scattering data than a uniform Fermi-Gas model. In the neutrino quasi-elastic scattering, the nuclear correlation has an appreciable effect on the cross section of high-energy scatt…
It has been suggested that two-photon exchange corrections could explain the discrepancy between Rosenbluth extractions of the proton form factors and recent polarization transfer measurements. We propose a precise comparison of electron-proton and positron-proton scattering at Q^2=1.6 GeV^2 to determine if two-photon exchange at moderate Q^2 values is in fact able to explain the discrepancy.
Using two hopefully reasonable assumptions plus existing data on the analyzing power in high energy proton-proton elastic scattering, we estimate that the hadronic helicity-flip amplitude at $P^2_{\perp}$ of 0.003 (GeV/c)$^2$ is neglible near 300 GeV. This would allow the absolute calibration of a CNI polarimeter.
We evaluate the pion-nucleon intermediate-state contribution to the two-photon exchange (TPE) correction in the elastic electron-nucleon scattering within a dispersive framework. We calculate the contribution from all $πN$ partial waves using the MAID parametrization. We provide the corresponding TPE correction to the unpolarized $e p$ scattering cross section in the region of low momentum transfer $ Q^2 \lesssim 0.064~\mathrm{GeV}^2$, where no analytical continuation into the unphysical region of the TPE scattering amplitudes is required. We compare our result in the forward angular region wi…
We examine the two-photon exchange corrections to elastic electron-proton scattering within a dispersive approach, including contributions from both Nucleon and Delta intermediate states. The dispersive analysis avoids off-shell uncertainties inherent in traditional approaches based on direct evaluation of loop diagrams, and guarantees the correct unitary behavior in the high energy limit. Using empirical information on the electromagnetic nucleon elastic and N-Delta transition form factors, we compute the two-photon exchange corrections both algebraically and numerically. Results are compared…
Using the available cross section and polarization data for elastic electron-proton scattering, we provide an extraction of the two-photon exchange amplitudes at a common value of four-momentum transfer, around Q^2 = 2.5 GeV^2. This analysis also predicts the e^+ p / e^- p elastic scattering cross section ratio, which will be measured by forthcoming experiments.
We discuss two-photon exchange (TPE) in elastic electron scattering off the trinucleon systems, 3He and 3H. The calculations are done in the semirelativistic approximation with the trinucleon wave functions obtained with the Paris and CD-Bonn nucleon-nucleon potentials. An applicability area of the model is wide enough and includes the main part of kinematical domain where experimental data exist. All three TPE amplitudes (generalized form factors) for electron 3He elastic scattering are calculated. We find that the TPE amplitudes are few times more significant in the scattring of electrons of…
We calculate two-photon exchange amplitude for the elastic electron-pion scattering in the dispersion-relation inspired approach, including both elastic and inelastic contributions. The latter was modelled as a sum of ρand b_1(1235) meson contributions. We find that at Q^2 < 2 GeV^2 the elastic contribution is dominant, similarly to electron-proton scattering case. At higher Q^2 the inelastic contribution is not negligible, but still smaller than the elastic one. We also explain observed rapid amplitude growth at backward angles.
We evaluate the two-photon exchange correction to the elastic electron-proton scattering cross section within a dispersive framework. Besides the elastic contribution, we account for all $πN$ intermediate state contributions using the phenomenological MAID fit as an input. We develop a novel method for the analytical continuation of the two-photon exchange amplitudes into the unphysical region and generalize our previous work to the momentum transfer region $ 0.064~\mathrm{GeV}^2 \lesssim Q^2 \lesssim 1~\mathrm{GeV}^2$. We compare our results with recent OLYMPUS, CLAS and VEPP-3 data as well a…
Recent theoretical developments in the studies of two-photon exchange effects in elastic electron-proton scattering are reviewed. Two-photon exchange mechanism is considered a likely source of discrepancy between polarized and unpolarized experimental measurements of the proton electric form factor at momentum transfers of several GeV$^2$. This mechanism predicts measurable effects that are currently studied experimentally.
We estimate the two-photon exchange contribution to elastic electron-proton scattering at large momentum transfer $Q^2$. It is shown that the leading two-photon exchange amplitude behaves as $1/Q^4$ relative to the one-photon amplitude, and can be expressed in a model independent way in terms of the leading twist nucleon distribution amplitudes. Using several models for the nucleon distribution amplitudes, we provide estimates for existing data and for ongoing experiments.
We assume that the recently reported excess over Standard Model expectations in the diphoton production is originated from a new scalar boson phi which interacts with photons through the coupling proportional to phi F^2. We obtain the cross section for semi-elastic production process pp-> p gamma p-> p phi q X by considering phi-photon-photon and phi-photon-Z couplings and discuss the constraints on the coupling parameters. We investigate the potential of the semi-elastic production process to probe phi-photon-photon and phi-photon-Z.
We evaluate the two-photon exchange (TPE) correction to the muon-proton elastic scattering at small momentum transfer. Besides the elastic (nucleon) intermediate state contribution, which is calculated exactly, we account for the inelastic intermediate states by expressing the TPE process approximately through the forward doubly virtual Compton scattering. The input in our evaluation is given by the unpolarized proton structure functions and by one subtraction function. For the latter, we provide an explicit evaluation based on a Regge fit of high-energy proton structure function data. It is f…
We present the dispersion relation approach based on unitarity and analyticity to evaluate the two-photon exchange contribution to elastic electron-proton scattering. The leading elastic and first inelastic $πN$ intermediate state contributions are accounted for in the region of small momentum transfer $Q^2 < 1~\mathrm{GeV}^2$ based on the available data input. The novel methods of analytical continuation allow us to exploit the MAMI form factor data and the MAID parameterization for the pion electroproduction amplitudes as input in the calculation. The results are compared to the recent CLAS,…
Under the influence of standardly used description of Coulomb-hadronic interference proposed by West and Yennie the protons have been interpreted as transparent objects; elastic events have been interpreted as more central than inelastic ones. It is known that using more general eikonal model the measured elastic data may be interpreted also very differently; elastic processes being more peripheral than inelastic ones. The most ample elastic data set measured at ISR energy of 52.8 GeV have been recently reanalyzed with the help of the eikonal model and new results obtained. The impact of recen…
We calculate $γZ$ exchange corrections to the parity-violating asymmetry of the elastic electron-proton scattering in a parton model using the formalism of generalized parton distributions(GPDs). We also examine the validity of the zero-momentum-transfer approximation adopted in the literatures and find that it overestimates the $γZ$ exchange effect significantly at the forward scattering angles.
In this note we give arguments in favor of the statement that the contribution of the box diagram calculated for electron muon elastic scattering can be considered an upper limit to electron proton scattering. As an exact QED calculation can be performed, this statement is useful for constraining model calculations involving the proton structure.
We have measured the beam-normal single-spin asymmetry in elastic scattering of transversely-polarized 3 GeV electrons from unpolarized protons at Q^2 = 0.15, 0.25 (GeV/c)^2. The results are inconsistent with calculations solely using the elastic nucleon intermediate state, and generally agree with calculations with significant inelastic hadronic intermediate state contributions. A_n provides a direct probe of the imaginary component of the 2-gamma exchange amplitude, the complete description of which is important in the interpretation of data from precision electron-scattering experiments.
The TOTEM 2.76, 7, 8, and 13 TeV pp elastic differential cross sections are extrapolated using a data-driven approach to obtain the 1.96 TeV pp elastic cross section. A difference with a 3.4$σ$ significance is observed between the extrapolated pp elastic cross section and the D0 p$\bar{\rm p}$ elastic cross section at 1.96 TeV in the region of the diffractive minimum and the second maximum of the pp cross section, providing evidence for colourless C-odd gluonic exchanges, also denoted as odderon. These results are combined with a TOTEM analysis of the same $t$-channel C-odd exchanges based on …
We estimate the two-photon exchange contribution to elastic electron-proton scattering at large momentum transfer through the scattering off a parton in the proton. We relate the process on the nucleon to the generalized parton distributions which also enter in other wide angle scattering processes. We find that when taking the polarization transfer determinations of the form factors as input, adding in the 2 photon correction, does reproduce the Rosenbluth data.
We relate the forward two-photon exchange (TPE) amplitudes to integrals of the inclusive lepton-proton scattering cross sections. These relations yield an alternative way for the evaluation of the TPE correction to hyperfine-splitting (HFS) in the hydrogen-like atoms with an equivalent to the standard approach (Iddings, Drell and Sullivan) result implying the Burkhardt-Cottingham sum rule. For evaluation of the individual effects (e.g., elastic contribution) our approach yields a distinct result. We compare both methods numerically on examples of the elastic contribution and the full TPE corre…
Two boson exchange (TBE) correction to the cross section for the quasi-elastic charged current $νn$ and $\barν p$ scattering is evaluated. The TBE is given by $Wγ$ box diagrams. The calculations are performed for 1 GeV neutrinos. The averaged TBE correction is of the order of $2\div4 %$ (with respect to Born contribution) in the case of $ν_e$ and $\barν_e$ and $1\div2 %$ in the case of $ν_μ$ and $\barν_μ$. The impact of the TBE effect on the systematic discrepancy between the $ν_e$ and $ν_μ$ cross sections is discussed.
We present recent measurements of neutrino charged current quasi-elastic (CC QE) scattering, nu_mu + p -> mu- + n. Measurements of CC QE on carbon near 1 GeV by MiniBooNE and SciBooNE, as well as measurements on iron at 3 GeV by MINOS, disagree with current interaction models, while measurements at higher energies on carbon by NOMAD show excellent agreement with those same models.
We apply a subtracted dispersion relation formalism with the aim to improve predictions for the two-photon exchange corrections to elastic electron-proton scattering observables at finite momentum transfers. We study the formalism on the elastic contribution, and make a detailed comparison with existing data for unpolarized cross sections as well as polarization transfer observables.
We consider simple-pole descriptions of soft elastic scattering at small $t$ and $s$, and allow for the presence of a hard pomeron. We have built and analyzed an exhaustive dataset and we show that simple poles provide an excellent description of the data in the region $- 0.5$ GeV$^2 < t <$ $- 0.1$ GeV$^2$, 6 GeV$<\sqrt{s}<$63 GeV. We show that new form factors have to be used, and get information on the trajectories of the soft and hard pomerons.
Lepton mass effects play a decisive role in description of elastic lepton-proton scattering when the beam's energy is comparable to the mass of the lepton. The future MUSE experiment, which is devised to solve the "Proton Radius Puzzle", is going to cover the corresponding kinematic region for a scattering of muons by a proton target. We anticipate that helicity-flip meson exchanges will make a difference in comparison of elastic electron-proton versus muon-proton scattering in MUSE. In this article, we estimate the $σ$ meson exchange contribution in the $t$-channel. This contribution, mediate…
We describe the discovery of the colorless $C$-odd gluonic compound, the odderon, by the D0 and TOTEM Collaborations by comparing elastic differential cross sections measured in $pp$ and $p \bar{p}$ interactions at high energies
Higher-order QED effects play an important role in precision measurements of nucleon elastic form factors in electron scattering. Here we introduce a two-photon exchange QED correction to the parity-violating polarization asymmetry of elastic electron-proton scattering. We calculate this correction in the parton model using the formalism of generalized parton distributions, and demonstrate that it can reach several per cent in certain kinematics, becoming comparable in size with existing experimental measurements of strange-quark effects in the proton neutral weak current.
A parameterization of the nucleon-nucleon elastic scattering amplitude is needed for future experiments with nucleon and nuclear beams in the beam momentum range of 2 -- 50 GeV/c/nucleon. There are many parameterizations of the amplitude at $P_{lab} >$ 25--50 GeV/c, and at $P_{lab} \leq$ 5 GeV/c. Our paper is aimed to cover the range between 5 -- 50 GeV/c. The amplitude is used in Glauber calculations of various cross sections and Monte Carlo simulations of nucleon-nucleon scatterings. Usually, the differential nucleon-nucleon elastic scattering cross sections are described by an exponential e…
The two-photon-exchange (TPE) effect plays a key role to extract the form factors (FFs) of the proton. In this work, we present some exact properties on the TPE effect in the elastic $ep$ scattering based on four types of typical and general interactions. The possible kinematical singularities, the asymptotic behaviors and the branch cuts of the TPE amplitudes are analyzed. The analytic expressions clearly indicate some exact relations between the dispersion relation (DR) method and the hadronic model (HM) method. It suggests that the two methods should be modified to general forms, respective…
The general spin structure of the matrix element, taking into account the two--photon exchange contribution, for the elastic electron (positron) --deuteron scattering has been derived using general symmetry properties of the hadron electromagnetic interaction, such as P--, C-- and T--invariances as well as lepton helicity conservation in QED at high energy. Taking into account also crossing symmetry, the amplitudes of $e^{\mp}d-$scattering can be parametrized in terms of fifteen real functions. The expressions for the differential cross section and for all polarization observables are given in…
Leading electroweak corrections play an important role in precision measurements of the strange form factors. We calculate the two-photon-exchange (TPE) and $γZ$-exchange corrections to the parity-violating asymmetry of the elastic electron-proton scattering in a simple hadronic model including the finite size of the proton. We find both can reach a few percent and are comparable in size with the current experimental measurements of strange-quark effects in the proton neutral weak current. The effect of $γZ$-exchange is in general larger than that of TPE, especially at low momentum transfer $Q…
The ratio of the elastic $e^+ p$ to $e^- p$ scattering cross sections has been measured precisely, allowing the determination of the two-photon exchange contribution to these processes. This neglected contribution is believed to be the cause of the discrepancy between the Rosenbluth and polarization transfer methods of measuring the proton electromagnetic form factors. The experiment was performed at the VEPP-3 storage ring at beam energies of 1.6 and 1.0 GeV and at lepton scattering angles between $15^\circ$ and $105^\circ$. The data obtained show evidence of a significant two-photon exchange…
We extend the general formalism of two-photon exchange to elastic lepton-nucleon scattering by accounting for all lepton mass terms. We then perform a numerical estimate of the muon-proton scattering at low momentum transfer in view of the future MUSE experiment. For this purpose, we estimate the two-photon exchange corrections to muon-proton scattering observables by considering the contribution of the proton intermediate state, which is expected to dominate at very low momentum transfers. We find that the two-photon exchange effect to the unpolarized muon- proton scattering cross section in …
We study the leading electroweak corrections in the precision measurement of the strange form factors. Specifically, we calculate the two-boson-exchange (TBE), two-photon-exchange (TPE) plus $γZ$-exchange ($γZ$E), corrections with $Δ(1232)$ excitation to the parity-violating asymmetry of the elastic electron-proton scattering. The interplay between nucleon and $Δ$ contributions is found to depend strongly on the kinematics, as $δ_Δ$ begins as negligible at backward angles but becomes very large and negative and dominant at forward angles, while $δ_N$ always stays positive and decreases monoton…
The Regge features of elastic $K^\pm N\to K^\pm N$, and charge exchange $K^-p\to\bar{K}^0n$ and $K^+n\to K^0p$ reactions are described by using a combined analysis of all these channels at high momenta. Based on the meson exchanges in the $t$-channel with their decays to $K\bar{K}$ pair allowed, the exchanges of $ρ(775)+ω(782)$ are excluded in contrast to existing model calculations and the present work follows a new scheme for the meson exchanges $a_0(980)+ϕ(1020)+f_2(1275)+a_2(1320)$ reggeized for the forward elastic scattering amplitude together with Pomeron. The charge exchange reactions a…
Two-photon exchange (TPE) contributions to elastic electron-proton scattering in the forward regime and in leading log $\sim t\ln|t|$ approximation in the momentum transfer $|t|$ are considered. The imaginary part of TPE amplitude in these kinematics is related to the total photo absorption cross section. The real part of the TPE amplitude is obtained from the imaginary part by means of a fixed-$t$ dispersion relation. The dispersion integrals for the relevant elastic $ep$-scattering amplitude converge and do not need subtraction. This allows us to make clean a prediction for the real part of …
The elastic and inelastic profiles have been derived from the measured elastic differential cross section data with the help of exact impact parameter representation of elastic scattering amplitude. The results obtained for $pp$ scattering at energy of 53 GeV and $\bar{p} p$ scattering at energy of 541 GeV have been presented. They indicate that nucleons can be regarded as objects characterized by a small core (diameter $\sim$ 0.4$÷$0.8 fm) and a half transparent outer shell (responsible mainly for elastic hadron scattering).
Existing data for large-$t$ $pp$ elastic-scattering differential cross-sections are energy-independent and behave as $t^{-8}$. This has been explained in terms of triple-gluon exchange, or alternatively through triple-singlet exchange. A discussion is given of the problems raised by each of these explanations, and of the possibility that at RHIC or LHC energies the exchange of three BFKL pomerons might result in a rapid rise with energy.
We estimate the two-photon exchange contribution to elastic electron-proton scattering at large momentum transfer by using a quark-parton representation of virtual Compton scattering. We thus can relate the two-photon exchange amplitude to the generalized parton distributions which also enter in other wide angle scattering processes. We find that the interference of one- and two-photon exchange contribution is able to substantially resolve the difference between electric form factor measurements from Rosenbluth and polarization transfer experiments. Two-photon exchange has additional consequen…
The parity-conserving single-spin beam asymmetry of elastic electron-proton scattering is induced by an absorptive part of the two-photon exchange amplitude. We demonstrate that this asymmetry has logarithmic and double-logarithmic enhancement due to contributions of hard collinear quasi-real photons. An optical theorem is used to evaluate the asymmetry in terms of the total photoproduction cross section on the proton, predicting its magnitude at a few parts per million for high electon beam energies and small scattering angles. At fixed 4-momentum transfers, the asymmetry is rising logarithmi…
We report on the status of the Novosibirsk experiment on a precision measurement of the ratio $R$ of the elastic $e^+ p$ and $e^- p$ scattering cross sections. Such measurements determine the two-photon exchange effect in elastic electron-proton scattering. The experiment is conducted at the VEPP-3 storage ring using a hydrogen internal gas target. The ratio $R$ is measured with a beam energy of 1.6 GeV (electron/positron scattering angles are $θ= 55 ÷75^{\circ}$ and $θ= 15 ÷25^{\circ}$) and 1 GeV ($θ= 65 ÷105^{\circ}$). We briefly describe the experimental method, paying special attention to …
Two-photon exchange contributions to elastic electron-proton scattering cross sections are evaluated in a simple hadronic model including the finite size of the proton. The corrections are found to be small in magnitude, but with a strong angular dependence at fixed $Q^2$. This is significant for the Rosenbluth technique for determining the ratio of the electric and magnetic form factors of the proton at high $Q^2$, and partly reconciles the apparent discrepancy with the results of the polarization transfer technique.
Unified systematic of elastic scattering data (USESD) proposed by the authors (arxiv:1111.4984 [hep-ph]) is based on symmetrized 2-dimensional Fermi distribution for pp elastic scattering amplitude in the impact parameter representation. It allows to describe differential cross sections of the reactions up to |t| ~ 1.75 (GeV/c)$^2$. To extend it to higher |t| values we consider a two coherent exponential parametrization of the cross sections and show that it cannot describe the cross sections at small |t| at $P_{lab}>$ 10 GeV/c. We extract a description of high |t| region from the parameteriza…
The amplitudes for the pion-nucleon charge exchange reaction of the Karlsruhe-Helsinki and the George-Washington-University partial wave analyses are compared with those of a Regge-cut model with the aim to explore the possibility to provide high energy constraints for theoretical baryon resonance analyses in the energy region above 2 GeV.
We compute the two photon exchange contributions to elastic scattering of polarized electrons from target protons. We use a nonlocal field theory formalism for this calculation. The formalism maintains gauge invariance and provides a systematic procedure for making this calculation. The results depend on one unknown parameter \bar b. We compute the two photon exchange correction to the ratio of electric to magnetic form factors extracted using the polarization transfer experiments. The correction is found to be small if \bar b ~ 1. However for larger values of \bar b>3, the correction can be q…
The $O(p^4)$ calculation on pion-nucleon elastic scattering amplitude in EOMS scheme within covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory is reviewed. Numerical fits to partial wave amplitudes up to $\sqrt{s}=1.13$ GeV and 1.20 GeV are performed and the results are compared with previous studies.
A new form of two-photon exchange(TPE) effect is studied to explain the discrepancy between unpolarized and polarized experimental data in elastic $ep$ scattering. The mechanism is based on a simple idea that apart from the usual TPE effects from box and crossed-box diagrams, the mesons may also be exchanged in elastic $ep$ scattering by two-photon coupling at loop level. The detailed study shows such contributions to reduced unpolarized cross section ($σ_{un}$) and polarized observables ($P_t,P_l$) at fixed $Q^2$ are only dependent on proton's electromagnetic form factors $G_{E,M}$ and a new …
