Both the B-factories BaBar and Belle have ended data-taking and have mostly completed the data analysis aimed at searching Lepton Flavor Violation in Tau decays. No evidence of LFV in tau decays has been found yet. We review in the following the experimental upper limits that have been set.
Since 1999, the B-factories collaborations BaBar and Belle have accumulated and studied large samples of tau lepton pairs. We summarize in the following the most interesting recent results.
Today the B-factories BaBar and Belle have accumulated largest samples of tau-tau events and are competing to be called tau-factories. Among the problems to be tested and measurements to be done by BaBar and Belle are check of CP and CPT invariance in tau decays, measurement of strange and non-strange spectral functions, extraction of mass of strange quark and |V_us|, searches for lepton flavor violation processes. In this paper, the latest results in tau physics by these two experiments and measurements to be done within next few years are reviewed.
Parameters for linac-ring type e^{-}e^{+} colliders with sqrt(s)=1020 MeV (phi factory), 3770 MeV (charm factory) and 4.2 GeV (tau factory) are discussed. It is shown that luminosities of the order of 10^{34} cm^{-2}s^{-1} can be achieved.
Lepton flavor violations in charged lepton give good signatures for the new physics. We review recent searches for lepton flavor violation in tau decays at B-factories. In these searches, optimization for background reduction is important to obtain high sensitivity. No evidence for these decays is observed and 90% confidence level upper limits have been set on the branching fractions at the O(10^{-8}) level.
Some recent $τ$-physics results are presented from the BaBar and Belle experiments at the SLAC and KEK B factories, which produce copious numbers of $τ$-lepton pairs. Measurements of the tau mass and lifetime allow to test lepton universality and CPT invariance, while searches for lepton-flavour violation in tau decays are powerful ways to look for physics beyond the Standard Model. In semihadronic, non-strange tau decays, the vector hadronic final state is particularly important in helping determine the hadronic corrections to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, while studies of strang…
The next generation tau-charm factory, the third Beijing Electron Spectrometer (BESIII) at the new Beijing Electron Positron Collider (BEPCII), has begun data collection. I discuss the flavor physics reach of the BESIII charm program and conclude with a discussion on future proposed tau-charm facilities.
Since 1999, the B-factories collaborations BABAR and Belle have accumulated and studied large samples of tau lepton pairs. The experimental results on Lepton Universality checks and Lepton Flavour Violation searches are reported.
We summarize recent results on B+ -> tau+ nu setting constraints on the charged Higgs mass, discuss the CP puzzle in B -> K pi decays and present searches for a light neutral Higgs in radiative Upsilon(2S) and Upsilon(3S)decays.
We demonstrate how probes of CP-violating observables in Higgs di-tau decays at prospective future lepton colliders could provide a test of weak scale baryogenesis with significant discovery potential. Measurements at the Circular Electron Positron Collider, for example, could exclude a CP phase larger than $2.9^\circ$ ($5.6^\circ$) at 68% (95%) C.L. assuming the Standard Model value for magnitude of the tau lepton Yukawa coupling. Conversely, this sensitivity would allow for a $5\,σ$ discovery for 82% of the CP phase range $[0,2π)$. The reaches of the Future Circular Collider - ee and Interna…
$D^0-\bar{D}^0$ mixing leads to the mass and width differences in the mass eigenstates of $D^0$ and $\bar{D}^0$ mesons (measured by parameters $x^{~}_D$ and $y^{~}_D$ respectively), but their magnitudes cannot be reliably predicted by the standard model. We show that it is possible to separately determine $x^{~}_D$ and $y^{~}_D$ through {\it time-integrated} measurements of the dilepton events of coherent $D^0\bar{D}^0$ decays on the $ψ(4.14)$ resonance at a $τ$-charm factory.
Using almost 10 million B Bbar decays produced at CESR, the CLEO collaboration has set the most stringent limits to date on the lepton flavor violating decays B0 to mu(e) tau.
The report reviews the measurements of the tau lepton parameters. The tau mass measurements at the KEDR detector as well as at the B-factories are considered in more details. The present limitations on the lepton universality are discussed.
After the establishment of the Kobayashi-Maskawa mechanism of CP violation at the two B factories, possibilities to increase the integrated luminosity by two orders of magnitude have been investigated, since it seems to be the amount needed to find physics beyond the Standard Model through CP violating and other observables in rare B meson decays, D meson decays and tau lepton decays. This report reviews the physics sensitivities and status of such super B factories, which are planned at two locations.
The present experimental status of searches for lepton flavor violating decays of the $τ$ lepton to a lighter mass lepton and a photon or a pseudoscalar meson is presented. The results obtained are from $e^+e^-$ annihilation data collected at a center-of-mass energy near 10.58 GeV by the \babar and the Belle detectors. In order to benefit from larger available datasets, the first $\babar-$Belle combinations of upper limits on the branching fractions of lepton flavor violating $τ$-decays are obtained.
We present a search for lepton-flavor-violating tau decays into three leptons (electrons or muons) using 782 fb^-1 of data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. No evidence for these decays is observed and we set 90% confidence level upper limits on the branching fractions between 1.5 x 10^-8 and 2.7 x 10^-8.
I review the latest results on exotic, lepton flavor violating (LFV) and lepton number violating (LNV) decays of the B, D mesons and the tau leptons, obtained at the two B-factory experiments, Belle and BaBar. Where appropriate, results from other experiments are also described.
Charged lepton-flavor violating processes are extremely rare in the Standard Model, but they may occur in several beyond-the-Standard Model theories, including Supersymmetry or models with leptoquarks or compositeness. We present a search for such processes in a sample of 117M Upsilon(3S) decays recorded with the BaBar detector. We place upper limits on the branching fractions BF(Upsilon(3S) -> e tau) < 5.0e-6 and BF(Upilon(3S) -> mu tau) < 4.1e-6 at 90% confidence level. These results are used to place lower limits on the mass scale of beyond-the-Standard Model physics contributing to lepton-…

We present the most recent searches for lepton-flavor-violating tau decays in BaBar. We find no evidence of tau decaying to three charged leptons or to a charged lepton and a neutral meson (KS, rho, phi, K*0, anti-K*0), and set upper limits on the corresponding branching fractions between 1.8 and 19 times 10-8 at 90% confidence level.
We search for the lepton flavor-violating "tau -> mu gamma" decay using 29.7 million tau pairs accumulated by the Belle experiment. The main background sources are found to be tau pairs with "tau -> mu nu nu" decay and radiative dimuon events. One event is observed in the signal region, while 2.5 +- 0.6 background events are expected. A preliminary upper limit Br(tau -> mu gamma) < 6 x 10^{-7} at the 90% confidence limit is obtained.

No evidence for a signal was found in any of the decay modes, and we set the following upper limits for the branching fractions: B(tau^- -> e^-K0s) < 2.6 x 10^-8, B(tau^- -> μ^-K0s) < 2.3 x 10^-8, B(tau^- -> e^-K0sK0s) < 7.1 x 10^-8 and B(tau^- -> mu^-K0sK0s) < 8.0 x 10^-8 at the 90% confidence level.

These results are 10 to 64 times more restrictive than previous li…
We search for lepton flavor and lepton number violating tau decays into a lepton (ell = electron or muon) and two charged mesons (h,h' = pi^\pm or K^\pm), tau- -> ell-h+h'- and tau- -> ell+h-h'-, using 671 fb^{-1} of data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. We obtain 90% C.L. upper limits on the branching fractions in the range (4.4-8.8)x10^{-8} for tau -> ehh', and (3.3-16)x10^{-8} for tau -> muhh' processes. These results improve upon previously published upper limits by factors between 1.6 to 8.8.
Recent results of a high-statistics study of tau lepton properties and decays at B factories are reviewed. We discuss measurements of tau lifetime, branching fractions, and spectral functions for several hadronic tau decay modes with $K^0_S$. Results of a search for lepton flavor violating tau decays as well as CP symmetry violation are briefly discussed.
We present a search for tau sneutrino production using the Tevatron ppbar collision data collected with the CDF II detector and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1 fb^-1. We focus on the scenarios predicted by the R-parity violating (RPV) supersymmetric models in which tau sneutrinos decay to two charged leptons of different flavor. With the data consistent with the standard model expectations, we set the upper limits on sigma(ppbar -> tau sneutrino)*BR(tau sneutrino ->emu,mutau,etau) and use these results to constrain the RPV couplings as a function of tau sneutrino mass.
We have searched for the tau lepton flavor violating decays tau- -> l-K0s (l = e or mu), using a data sample of 281 fb^-1 collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB e+e- asymmetric-energy collider. No evidence for a signal was found in either of the decay modes, and we set the following upper limits for the branching fractions: B(tau- -> e-K0s) < 5.6 * 10^-8 and B(tau- -> m^-K0s) < 4.9 * 10^-8 at the 90% confidence level. These results are improvements by factors of 16 and 19, respectively, compared with previously published limits from CLEO.
We utilise the LHC Run-1 and -2 Higgs data to constrain the CP-violating top-Higgs couplings. In order to satisfy the current full Higgs data sets at $2σ$ level, the CP-odd component $C^p_t$ and the CP-even component $C^s_t$ have to be within the ranges $|C^p_t|< 0.37$ and $0.85 <C^s_t< 1.20$, respectively, which is stronger than the LHC Run-1 bound $|C^p_t|< 0.54$ and $0.68 <C^s_t< 1.20$. With the new bound, we explore the impact on the CP-violating top-Higgs couplings in the Higgs production processes $pp \to t\bar{t}h, thj, hh$ at 13 TeV LHC, and $e^+e^- \to hZ, hγ$ at future 240 GeV Higgs …
We search for lepton-flavor-violating tau decays into a lepton (electron or muon) and an f0(980) meson using 671 fb-1 of data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. No events are observed and we set the following 90% C.L. upper limits on the branching fraction products: B(tau- -> e-f0(980))*B(f0(980)->pi+pi-)<3.2x10^-8 and B(tau- -> mu-f0(980))*B(f0(980) -> pi+pi-)<3.4x10^-8. This is the first search performed for these modes.
We search for pair production of doubly charged Higgs particles followed by decays into electron-tau and muon-tau pairs using data (350 inverse picobarns) collected from proton-antiproton collisions at 1.96 TeV by the CDF II experiment. We search separately for cases where three or four final-state leptons are detected, and combine results for exclusive decays to left-handed electron-tau (muon-tau) pairs. We set a lower mass limit of 114 (112) GeV/cc at the 95% confidence level for left-handed doubly charged Higgs.
We search for lepton-flavor-violating tau decays into three leptons (electron or muon) using 535 fb-1 of data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. No evidence for these decays is observed, and we set 90% confidence level upper limits on the branching fractions of (2.0-4.1)x10^-8. These results improve upon our previously published upper limits by factors of 4.9 to 10.
We search for lepton-flavor-violating tau decays into three leptons (electron or muon) using 535 fb^{-1} of data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. No evidence for a signal was found in either of the decay modes and we set the following upper limits for the branching fractions: B(tau^- -> Lambda-barπ-) < 1.4 * 10^{-7} and B(tau^- -> Lambda pi^-) < 0.72 * 10^{-7} at the 90% confidence level. This is the first search ever performed for these modes.
In the Standard Model of particle physics, lepton flavour and lepton number are conserved quantities although no fundamental symmetry demands their conservation. I present recent results of searches for lepton flavour and lepton number violating hadron decays measured at the B factories and LHCb. In addition, the LHCb collaboration has recently performed a search for the lepton flavour violating decay τ^- \to μ^-μ^-μ^+. The obtained upper exclusion limit, that has been presented in this talk for the first time, is of the same order of magnitude as those observed at the B factories. This is the…

A direct search for lepton flavour violating decays of the Higgs boson (H) in the H to e tau and H to e mu channels is described. The data sample used in the search was collected in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 8 TeV with the CMS detector at the LHC and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 inverse femtobarns. No evidence is found for lepton flavour violating decays in either final state. Upper limits on the branching fractions, B(H to e tau ) < 0.69% and B(H to e mu) < 0.035%, are set at the 95% confidence level. The constraint set on B(H to e tau) is an order of magnitude …
We have searched for five decay modes of the tau lepton that simultaneously violate lepton and baryon number: tau -> anti-proton gamma, tau -> anti-proton pi0, tau -> anti-proton eta, tau -> anti-proton 2pi0, and tau -> anti-proton pi0eta. The data used in the search were collected with the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR). The integrated luminosity of the data sample is 4.7 fb^{-1}, corresponding to the production of 4.3 x 10^6 tau+tau- events. No evidence is found for any of the decays, resulting in much improved upper limits on the branching fractions for the two…
We search for the neutrinoless, lepton-flavor-violating tau decays tau -> l V^0, where l is an electron or muon and V^0 is a vector meson reconstructed as phi -> K^+K^-, rho -> pi^+pi^-, K^* -> K^+pi^-, or K^*bar -> K^-pi^+. The analysis has been performed using 451 fb^{-1} of data collected at an e^+e^- center-of-mass energy near 10.58 GeV with the BaBar detector at the PEP-II storage rings. The number of events found in the data is compatible with the background expectation, and upper limits on the branching fractions are set in the range (2.6-19) x 10^{-8} at the 90% confidence level.
Using data collected with the BaBar detector between 1999 and 2001, we describe a preliminary search for the neutrinoless decay Tau to Mu Gamma. This data sample includes data collected both on and off the Upsilon(4S) resonance and corresponds to 56 million produced tau pair events. The search has an efficiency of 5.2 +- 0.1(MCstat) +- 0.5(sys) % and an expected background rate of 7.8 +- 1.4 events. We select 13 events in the final sample. As there is no evidence for a signal in this data, we set a preliminary upper limit of B(Tau to Mu Gamma) < 2.0 x 10^-6 @90% CL.
We have searched for the lepton flavor violating decays $τ^-\to \ell^-\ks$ ($\ell = e {or} μ$), using a data sample of 281 fb$^{-1}$ collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB $e^+e^-$ asymmetric-energy collider. No evidence for a signal was found in either of the decay modes, and we set the following upper limits for the branching fractions: ${\cal{B}}(τ^-\to e^-\ks) < 5.6\times 10^{-8}$ and ${\cal{B}}(τ^-\to μ^-\ks) < 4.9\times 10^{-8}$ at the 90% confidence level. These results improve the previously published limits set by the CLEO collaboration by factors of 16 and 19, respectively.
The first direct search for lepton-flavour-violating decays of the recently discovered Higgs boson (H) is described. The search is performed in the H to mu tau[e] and H to mu tau[h] channels, where tau[e] and tau[h] are tau leptons reconstructed in the electronic and hadronic decay channels, respectively. The data sample used in this search was collected in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of sqrt(s) = 8 TeV with the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 inverse femtobarns. The sensitivity of the search is an order of magnitude better than t…
In this talk, we first make some brief comments on the phase-convention dependence of the CP-violating parameter ε_B. A simple framework is then presented for analyzing new physics contributions to B^0-\bar{B}^0 mixing and their effects on the lepton CP asymmetry, a promising signal to be further searched for in the first-round experiments of B factories.
We report on the recent results of searches for lepton-flavor-violating tau decays as well as lepton-number-violating B decays with the world-highest data samples accumulated at the Belle.
The measurements of the mean lifetime of the tau lepton are reviewed. The conditions for measuring the lifetime at various e+e- colliders are compared and the analysis methods are briefly described. The new developments since the previous Workshop on Tau Lepton Physics are listed. The world average is tau_tau = 290.5 +- 1.0 fs. The LEP experiments dominate this average and have analyzed nearly all of their data. In anticipation of the next era of precision measurements at CLEO and the b factories, the important sources of systematic errors and the treatment of systematic biases are discussed.
Non-leptonic two-body weak decays of baryons are an important tool to probe the combined charge-conjugation--parity symmetry (CP) violation. We explain why the decays of strange baryons provide complementary information to the decays of kaons. A model-independent parameterization of the non-leptonic decays of the $Λ$- and $Ξ$-baryons is reviewed, and the amplitudes are updated according to the latest experimental input. We demonstrate the potential of performing precision tests in strange baryon decays at the next generation electron-positron $J/ψ$ factories with luminosity of $10^{35}$ cm$^{-…
We constrain, from rare tau decays, several combinations of $λ$ and $λ'$ type couplings coming from Supersymmetry without R-parity. The processes that we consider are tau --> l M, tau --> l_i l_j l_k, and tau --> l gamma, where l stands for either e or mu, and M is the generic symbol for a meson. We update several existing bounds, and provide a few new ones too.
We have searched for lepton flavor violating $τ$ decays with a pseudoscalar meson ($η$, $η'$ and $π^0$) using a data sample of 401 fb$^{-1}$ collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. No evidence for these decays is found and we set the following upper limits on the branching fractions: ${\cal{B}}(τ^-\to e^-η) < 9.2\times 10^{-8}$, ${\cal{B}}(τ^-\to μ^-η) < 6.5\times 10^{-8}$, ${\cal{B}}(τ^-\to e^-η') < 1.6\times 10^{-7}$, ${\cal{B}}(τ^-\to μ^-η') < 1.3\times 10^{-7}$ ${\cal{B}}(τ^-\to e^-π^0) < 8.0\times 10^{-8}$ and ${\cal{B}}(τ^-\to μ^-π^0) < 1.2\time…
We report on a search for a high mass, narrow width particle that decays directly to e+mu, e+tau, or mu+tau. We use approximately 110 pb^-1 of data collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab from 1992 to 1995. No evidence of lepton flavor violating decays is found. Limits are set on the production and decay of sneutrinos with R-parity violating interactions.
We have searched for lepton-flavor-violating $τ$ decays with a pseudoscalar meson ($η$, $η'$ {and} $π^0$) using a data sample of 401 fb$^{-1}$ collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. We report results of a search for tau lepton decays strongly suppressed in the Standard Model based on the world-largest data sample accumulated with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. The decays include: lepton flavor and lepton number violating tau decays into a lepton (e or mu) and two charged mesons (K or pi) as well as lepton and baryon number violating tau decays into a Lambda and a charged meson (K or pi). The sensitivity to the branching fractions is significantly improved compared to our previous results and reaches O(10^{-8}).
In radiative B decays to final states containing one spin zero meson, one spin one meson and a photon, the photon polarization can be measured from the angular distribution of the final state. The P-odd, C-even components of this distribution lead to triple correlation asymmetries that are very sensitive to new physics as they are likely to receive only tiny contributions from the Standard Model. There are also (CP-conserving) forward-backward asymmetries to which there may be SM contributions of a few percent; nevertheless there is a data driven means to overcome the SM ``pollution''. These l…
We present the results of a search for pair production of scalar top quarks in an R-parity violating supersymmetry scenario in 106 pb-1 of ppbar collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 1.8$ TeV collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. In this mode each scalar top quark decays into a tau lepton and a b quark. We search for events with two tau's, one decaying leptonically (e or mu) and one decaying hadronically, and two jets. No candidate events pass our final selection criteria. We set a 95% confidence level lower limit on the scalar top quark mass at 122 GeV/c2 for Br (stop-> tau + b) = 1.
The possibility to discriminate between different operators contributing to lepton flavour violating tau decays is discussed within an effective field theory framework. Correlations among decay rates in different channels as well as differential distributions in many-body decays are considered. Recent developments in the determination of the hadronic form factors for $τ\rightarrow \ell ππ$ ($\ell = e, μ$) decays are incorporated in the analysis. The above issues are exemplified by considering a Higgs-like boson with lepton flavour violating couplings. Implications of the search for lepton flav…
$b\to sτ^+τ^-$ measurements are highly motivated for addressing lepton-flavor-universality (LFU)-violating puzzles such as $R_{K^{(\ast)}}$ anomalies. The anomalies of $R_{D^{(*)}}$ and $R_{J/ψ}$ further strengthen their necessity and importance, given that the LFU-violating hints from both involve the third-generation leptons directly. $Z$ factories at the future $e^-e^+$ colliders stand at a great position to conduct such measurements because of their relatively high production rates and reconstruction efficiencies for $B$ mesons at the $Z$ pole. To fully explore this potential, we pursue a …
