We impose constraints on the topology of the Universe determined from a search for matched circles in the temperature anisotropy patterns of the 7-year WMAP data. We pay special attention to the sensitivity of the method to residual foreground contamination of the sky maps, and show that for a full sky estimate of the CMB signal (the ILC map) such residuals introduce a non-negligible effect on the statistics of matched circles. In order to reduce this effect, we perform the analysis on maps for which the most contaminated regions have been removed. A search for pairs of matched back-to-back circles in the higher resolution WMAP W-band map allows tighter constraints to be imposed on topology. Our results rule out universes with topologies that predict pairs of such circles with radii larger than α_min \approx 10 degrees. This places a lower bound on the size of the fundamental domain for a flat universe of about 27.9 Gpc. This bound is close to the upper limit on the size of Universe possible to detect by the method of matched circles, i.e. the diameter of the observable Universe is 28.3 Gpc.
A search for matched circle pairs of similar temperature fluctuations in the final WMAP 9yr data is carried out. Such a signature is expected if the space of the Universe is multiply connected. We investigate the relation between the pixel resolution of cosmic microwave background (CMB) maps and a Gaussian smoothing in order to lower the probability for missing matched circle pairs. CMB maps having the 3-torus topology are generated with the characteristics of the WMAP satellite in order to determine how large the smoothing should be chosen in CMB maps disturbed by detector noise. The V- and W…

The Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) mapped the distribution of temperature and polarization over the entire sky in five microwave frequency bands. These full-sky maps were used to obtain measurements of temperature and polarization anisotropy of the cosmic microwave background with the unprecedented accuracy and precision. The analysis of two-point correlation functions of temperature and polarization data gives determinations of the fundamental cosmological parameters such as the age and composition of the universe, as well as the key parameters describing the physics of inflation…
An appealing theory is that our current patch of universe was born as a nucleation bubble from a phase of false vacuum eternal inflation. We search for evidence for this theory by looking for the signal imprinted on the CMB that is generated when another bubble "universe" collides with our own. We create an efficient and optimal estimator for the signal in the WMAP 7-year data. We find no detectable signal, and constrain the amplitude, a, of the initial curvature perturbation that would be generated by a collision: -4.66 \times 10^{-8} < a (\sin{\thetabubble})^{4/3} < 4.73 \times 10^{-8} [Mpc^…
We constrain several models of the early Universe that predict a statistical anisotropy of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) sky. We make use of WMAP9 maps deconvolved with beam asymmetries. As compared to previous releases of WMAP data, they do not exhibit the anomalously large quadrupole of statistical anisotropy. This allows to strengthen the limits on the parameters of models established earlier in the literature. In particular, the amplitude of the special quadrupole is constrained as |g_*|<0.072 at 95% C.L. (-0.046<g_*<0.048 at 68% C.L.) independently of the preferred direction in th…
In this paper, we put constraints on neutrino properties such as mass $m_ν$ and degeneracy parameters $ξ_i$ from WMAP5 data and light element abundances by using a Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) approach. In order to take consistently into account the effects of the degeneracy parameters, we run the Big Bang Nucleosynthesis code for each value of $ξ_i$ and the other cosmological parameters to estimate the Helium abundance, which is then used to calculate CMB anisotropy spectra instead of treating it as a free parameter. We find that the constraint on $m_ν$ is fairly robust and does not vary v…
We measured the cross-correlation of the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) 7 year temperature map and the full sky data release of the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) galaxy map. Using careful mapmaking and masking techniques we find a positive cross-correlation signal. The results are fully consistent with a Lambda-CDM Universe, although not statistically significant. Our findings are robust against changing the galactic latitude cut from |b|>10 to |b|>20 and no color dependence was detected when we used WMAP Q, V or W maps. We confirm higher significance correlations fou…
We revisit the anisotropic universe model previously developed by Ackerman, Carroll and Wise (ACW), and generalize both the theoretical and computational framework to include polarization and various forms of systematic effects. We apply our new tools to simulated WMAP data in order to understand the potential impact of asymmetric beams, noise mis-estimation and potential Zodiacal light emission. We find that neither has any significant impact on the results. We next show that the previously reported ACW signal is also present in the 1-year WMAP temperature sky map presented by Liu & Li, where…
During its early evolution, the hot, dense Universe provided a laboratory for probing fundamental physics at high energies. By studying the relics from those early epochs, such as the light elements synthesized during primordial nucleosynthesis when the Universe was only a few minutes old, and the relic, cosmic microwave photons, last scattered when the protons, alphas, and electrons (re)combined some 400 thousand years later, the evolution of the Universe may be used to test the standard models of cosmology and particle physics and to set constraints on proposals of physics beyond these stand…
We extend our study of a universe with a non-classical stringy topology, and consider an orbifold line topology, $\mathbb{R}\times\mathbb{R}^2/\mathbb{Z}_p$. This topology has a fixed line and identifies each point in space with $p-1$ other points. An observable imprint of an orbifold line on the CMB is the appearance of up to $(p-1)/2$ pairs of matching circles. Searching the WMAP data for matching circles, we can rule out an orbifold line topology with $p$ up to 10, except for $p=8$. While the significance of the peak at $p=8$ varies between data releases of WMAP, it does not appear in Planc…
We studied the role of fundamental constants in an updated recombination scenario, focusing on the time variation of the fine structure constant αand the electron mass m_e in the early Universe. Using CMB data including WMAP 5-yr release, and the 2dFGRS power spectrum, we put bounds on variations of these constants, when both constants are allowed to vary, and in the case that only one of them is variable. In particular, we have found that -0.019 < Δα/ α_0 < 0.017 (95% c.l.), in our joint estimation of αand cosmological parameters. Finally, we analyze how the constraints depends on the recombi…
In this paper, power-law cosmology whose scale factor is a power of time, $a \propto t^{\a}$, is investigated. Considering late universe with canonical scalar field and dust domination, we use observational data from Cosmic Microwave Background (WMAP7), Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) and observational Hubble data to find power exponent $\a$ of the power-law and other cosmological variables. The power $\a$ is found to be $0.99 \pm 0.02$ (WMAP7+BAO+$H_0$) and $0.99 \pm 0.04$ (WMAP7). These values do not exclude possibility of acceleration at 1$σ$ hence giving viability to power-law cosmology…
Angular power spectrum of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature anisotropies is one of the most important on characteristics of the Universe such as its geometry and total density. Using flat sky approximation and Fourier analysis, we estimate the angular power spectrum from an ensemble of least foreground-contaminated square patches from WMAP W and V frequency band map. This method circumvents the issue of foreground cleaning and that of breaking orthogonality in spherical harmonic analysis due to masking out the bright Galactic plane region, thereby rendering a direct measurement…
In power-law cosmology, we determine potential function of a canonical scalar field in FLRW universe in presence of barotropic perfect fluid. The combined WMAP5+BAO+SN dataset and WMAP5 dataset are used here to determine the value of the potential. The datasets suggest slightly closed universe. If the universe is closed, the exponents of the power-law cosmology are $q = 1.01$ (WMAP5 dataset) and $q=0.985$ (combined dataset). The lower limits of $a_0$ (closed geometry) are $5.1\E{26}$ for WMAP5 dataset and $9.85\E{26}$ for the combined dataset. The domination of the power-law term over the curv…
The lack of large-angle correlations in the observed microwave background temperature fluctuations persists in the final-year maps from WMAP and the first cosmological data release from Planck. We find a statistically robust and significant result: p-values for the missing correlations lying below 0.24 per cent (i.e. evidence at more than 3 sigma) for foreground cleaned maps, in complete agreement with previous analyses based upon earlier WMAP data. A conservative cut-sky analysis of the Planck HFI 100 GHz frequency band, the `cleanest CMB channel', returns a p-value as small as 0.03 per cent,…

We present the final nine-year maps and basic results from the WMAP mission. We provide new nine-year full sky temperature maps that were processed to reduce the asymmetry of the effective beams. Temperature and polarization sky maps are examined to separate CMB anisotropy from foreground emission, and both types of signals are analyzed in detail. The WMAP mission has resulted in a highly constrained LCDM cosmological model with precise and accurate parameters in agreement with a host of other cosmological measurements. When WMAP data are combined with finer scale CMB, baryon acoustic oscillat…
If a primordial magnetic field in the universe has non-zero helicity, the violation of parity symmetry results in non-zero correlations between cosmic microwave background temperature and B-mode polarization. In this paper we derive approximations to the relevant microwave background power spectra arising from a helical magnetic field. Using the cross-power spectrum between temperature and B-mode polarization from the WMAP nine-year data, we set a 95\% confidence level upper limit on the helicity amplitude to be 10 nG$^2$ Gpc for helicity spectral index $n_H = -1.9$, for a cosmological magneti…
We revisit the alignments of the largest structures observed in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) using the seven and nine-year WMAP and first-year Planck data releases. The observed alignments -- the quadrupole with the octopole and their joint alignment with the direction of our motion with respect to the CMB (the dipole direction) and the geometry of the Solar System (defined by the Ecliptic plane) -- are generally in good agreement with results from the previous WMAP data releases. However, a closer look at full-sky data on the largest scales reveals discrepancies between the earlier W…
We use a Quadratic Maximum Likelihood (QML) method to estimate the angular power spectrum of the cross-correlation between cosmic microwave background and large scale structure maps as well as their individual auto-spectra. We describe our implementation of this method and demonstrate its accuracy on simulated maps. We apply this optimal estimator to WMAP 7-year and NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS) data and explore the robustness of the angular power spectrum estimates obtained by the QML method. With the correction of the declination systematics in NVSS, we can safely use most of the information co…
We have investigated non-Gaussianity of our early Universe by comparing the parity asymmetry of the WMAP power spectrum with simulations. We find that odd-parity preference of the WMAP data (2<= l <=18) is anomalous at 4-in-1000 level. We find it likely that low quadrupole power is part of this parity asymmetry rather than an isolated anomaly. Futher investigation is required to find out whether the origin of this anomaly is cosmological or systematic effect. The data from Planck surveyor, which has systematics distinct from the WMAP, will help us to resolve the origin of the anomalous odd-par…
(Abridged) We present the angular power spectra derived from the 7-year maps and discuss the cosmological conclusions that can be inferred from WMAP data alone. The third acoustic peak in the TT spectrum is now well measured by WMAP. In the context of a flat LambdaCDM model, this improvement allows us to place tighter constraints on the matter density from WMAP data alone, and on the epoch of matter-radiation equality, The temperature-polarization (TE) spectrum is detected in the 7-year data with a significance of 20 sigma, compared to 13 sigma with the 5-year data. The low-l EE spectrum, a me…
An essential quantity required to understand the physics of the early Universe, in particular the inflationary epoch, is the primordial scalar potential $Φ$ and its statistics. We present for the first time an all-sky reconstruction of $Φ$ with corresponding $1σ$-uncertainty from WMAP's cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature data -- a map of the very early Universe right after the inflationary epoch. This has been achieved by applying a Bayesian inference method that separates the whole inverse problem of the reconstruction into many independent ones, each of them solved by an optimal l…
A recent application of the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test to the WMAP 7 year W-band maps claims evidence that the CMB is "weakly random", and that only 20% of the signal can be explained as a random Gaussian field. I here repeat this analysis, and in contrast to the original result find no evidence for deviation from the standard ΛCDM model. Instead, the results of the original analysis are consistent with not properly taking into account the correlations of the ΛCDM power spectrum.
The cosmic microwave background radiation is supposed to be Gaussian and this hypothesis is in good agreement with the recent very accurate measurements. Nonetheless a tiny amount of non-Gaussianity is predicted by the standard inflation scenario, while more exotic models suggest a higher degree of non-Gaussianity. Tightly constraining the level of Gaussianity in the CMB data represents then a fundamental handle to understand the physics and the origin of our universe. By means of needlets, a novel rendition of wavelets, characterised by excellent properties of localisations both in harmonic a…
There is currently a debate over the existence of claimed statistical anomalies in the cosmic microwave background (CMB), recently confirmed in Planck data. Recent work has focussed on methods for measuring statistical significance, on masks and on secondary anisotropies as potential causes of the anomalies. We investigate simultaneously the method for accounting for masked regions and the foreground integrated Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) signal. We search for trends in different years of WMAP CMB data with different mask treatments. We reconstruct the ISW field due to the 2 Micron All-Sky Survey (2MASS…
We analyze seven year and nine year WMAP temperature maps for signatures of three finite flat topologies M_0=T^3, M_1=T^2 x R^1, and M_2=S^1 x R^2. We use Monte-Carlo simulations with the Feldman-Cousins method to obtain confidence intervals for the size of the topologies considered. We analyze the V, W, and Q frequency bands along with the ILC map and find no significant difference in the results. The 95.5% confidence level lower bound on the size of the topology is 1.5L_0 for M_0, 1.4L_0 for M_1, and 1.1L_0 for M_2, where L_0 is the radius of the last scattering surface. Our results agree ve…
In cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiments, foreground-cleaned temperature maps are still contaminated by the residual dipole due to uncertainties of the Doppler dipole direction and microwave radiometer sidelobe. To obtain reliable CMB maps, such contamination has to be carefully removed from observed data. We have previously built a software package for map-making, residual dipole-contamination removal, and power spectrum estimation from the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) raw data. This software has now been significantly improved. With the improved software, we obtain a n…
The existence of concentric low variance circles in the CMB sky, generated by black-hole encounters in an aeon preceding our big bang, is a prediction of the Conformal Cyclic Cosmology. Detection of three families of such circles in WMAP data was recently reported by Gurzadyan & Penrose (2010). We reassess the statistical significance of those circles by comparing with Monte Carlo simulations of the CMB sky with realistic modeling of the anisotropic noise in WMAP data. We find that the circles are not anomalous and that all three groups are consistent at 3sigma level with a Gaussian CMB sky as…
The cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature maps from the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) are of great importance for cosmology. In previous work we had developed a pipeline for map-making independently of the WMAP team. The new maps produced from the WMAP raw data by our pipeline are notably different to the official ones, and the power spectrum as well as the best-fit cosmological parameters are significantly different too. What's more, by revealing the inconsistency between the WMAP raw data and their official map, we had pointed out that there must exist an unexpected pro…
The potential $V(ϕ)=λϕ^{n}$ is responsible for the inflation of the universe as scalar field $ϕ$ oscillates quickly around some point where $V(ϕ)$ has a minimum. The end of this stage has an important role on the further evolution stages of the universe. The created particles are responsible for reheating the universe at the end of this stage. The behaviour of the inflation and reheating stages are often known as power law expansion $S(η) \varpropto η^{1+β}$, $S(η) \varpropto η^{1+β_{s}}$ respectively. The reheating temperature ($T_{rh}$) and $β_{s}$ give us valuable information about the rehe…
In this paper, the holographic dark energy (HDE) model, where the future event horizon is taken as an IR cut-off, is confronted by using currently available cosmic observational data sets which include type Ia supernovae, baryon acoustic oscillation and cosmic microwave background radiation from full information of WMAP-7yr. Via the Markov Chain Monte Carlo method, we obtain the values of model parameter $c= 0.696_{- 0.0737- 0.132- 0.190}^{+ 0.0736+ 0.159+ 0.264}$ with $1,2,3σ$ regions. Therefore one can conclude that at lest $3σ$ level the future Universe will be dominated by phantom like dar…
In the picture of eternal inflation, our observable universe resides inside a single bubble nucleated from an inflating false vacuum. Many of the theories giving rise to eternal inflation predict that we have causal access to collisions with other bubble universes, providing an opportunity to confront these theories with observation. We present the results from the first observational search for the effects of bubble collisions, using cosmic microwave background data from the WMAP satellite. Our search targets a generic set of properties associated with a bubble collision spacetime, which we d…
In a class of recently proposed models, the early universe is strongly coupled and described holographically by a three-dimensional, weakly coupled, super-renormalizable quantum field theory. This scenario leads to a power spectrum of scalar perturbations that differs from the usual empirical LCDM form and the predictions of generic models of single field, slow roll inflation. This spectrum is characterized by two parameters: an amplitude, and a parameter g related to the coupling constant of the dual theory. We estimate these parameters, using WMAP and other astrophysical data. We compute Bay…
Several Cardassian universe models including the original, modified polytropic and exponential Cardassian models are constrained by the latest Constitution Type Ia supernova data, the position of the first acoustic peak of CMB from the five years WMAP data and the size of baryonic acoustic oscillation peak from the SDSS data. Both the spatial flat and curved universe are studied, and we also take account of the possible bulk viscosity of the matter fluid in the flat universe case.
Distance measurement provide no constraints on curvature independent of assumptions about the dark energy, raising the question, how flat is our Universe if we make no such assumptions? Allowing for general evolution of the dark energy equation of state with 20 free parameters that are allowed to cross the phantom divide, w(z) = -1, we show that while it is indeed possible to match the first peak in the Cosmic Microwave Background with non-flat models and arbitrary Hubble constant, H_0, the full WMAP7 and supernova data alone imply -0.12 < Ω_k < 0.01 (2σ). If we add an H_0 prior, this tightens…
A detection or nondetection of primordial non-Gaussianity in the CMB data is essential not only to test alternative models of the physics of the early universe but also to discriminate among classes of inflationary models. Given this far reaching consequences of such a non-Gaussianity detection for our understanding of the physics of the early universe, it is important to employ alternative indicators in order to have further information about the Gaussianity features of CMB that may be helpful for identifying their origins. In this way, a considerable effort has recently gone into the design …
One of the FLRW models that best fits the WMAP sky maps of the CMB is the Poincare dodecahedral space. The optimal fit of this model to WMAP data was recently found using an optimal cross-correlation method, but the systematic error in the estimate of the matched-circle angular radius α, or equivalently, the (comoving) size of the Universe 2\rinj (twice the injectivity radius), might be much higher than the random error. In order to increase the falsifiability of the model, it would be useful to reduce the uncertainty in this estimate and to estimate the fraction of the sky where multiply imag…
If the Universe undergoes a phase transition, at which global monopoles are created or destroyed, topology of its spatial sections can change. More specifically, by making use of Myers' theorem, we show that, after a transition in which global monopoles form, spatial sections of a spatially flat Universe become finite and closed. This implies that global monopoles can change topology of Universe's spatial sections (from infinite and open to finite and closed). We emphasize that global monopoles cannot alter topology of the space-time manifold.
We present an implementation of an optimal CMB trispectrum estimator which accounts for anisotropic noise and incomplete sky coverage. We use a general separable mode expansion which can and has been applied to constrain both primordial and late-time models. We validate our methods on large angular scales using known analytic results in the Sachs-Wolfe limit. We present the first near-optimal trispectrum constraints from WMAP data on the cubic term of local model inflation $ g_{\rm NL} = (1.6 \pm 7.0)\times 10^5$, for the equilateral model $t_{\rm NL}^{\rm{equil}}=(-3.11\pm 7.5)\times 10^6 $ a…
We study the possibility that the universe has compact topologies T^3, T^2 x R^1, or S^1 x R^2 using the seven-year WMAP data. The maximum likelihood 95% confidence intervals for the size L of the compact direction are 1.7 < L/L_0 < 2.1, 1.8 < L/L_0 < 2.0, 1.2 < L/L_0 < 2.1 for the three cases, respectively, where L_0=14.4 Gpc is the distance to the last scattering surface. An infinite universe is compatible with the data at 4.3 sigma. We find using a Bayesian analysis that the most probable universe has topology T^2 x R^1, with L/L_0=1.9.
In this paper, we report the results of constraining the holographic dark energy model with spatial curvature and massive neutrinos, based on a Markov Chain Monte Carlo global fit technique. The cosmic observational data include the full WMAP 7-yr temperature and polarization data, the type Ia supernova data from Union2.1 sample, the baryon acoustic oscillation data from SDSS DR7 and WiggleZ Dark Energy Survey, and the latest measurements of $H_0$ from HST. To deal with the perturbations of dark energy, we adopt the parameterized post-Friedmann method. We find that, for the simplest holographi…
