Efficient implementations of the classical molecular dynamics (MD) method for Lennard-Jones particle systems are considered. Not only general algorithms but also techniques that are efficient for some specific CPU architectures are also explained. A simple spatial-decomposition-based strategy is adopted for parallelization. By utilizing the developed code, benchmark simulations are performed on a HITACHI SR16000/J2 system consisting of IBM POWER6 processors which are 4.7 GHz at the National Institute for Fusion Science (NIFS) and an SGI Altix ICE 8400EX system consisting of Intel Xeon processors which are 2.93 GHz at the Institute for Solid State Physics (ISSP), the University of Tokyo. The parallelization efficiency of the largest run, consisting of 4.1 billion particles with 8192 MPI processes, is about 73% relative to that of the smallest run with 128 MPI processes at NIFS, and it is about 66% relative to that of the smallest run with 4 MPI processes at ISSP. The factors causing the parallel overhead are investigated. It is found that fluctuations of the execution time of each process degrade the parallel efficiency. These fluctuations may be due to the interference of the operating system, which is known as OS Jitter.
The shear viscosity of a Lennard-Jones fluid is obtained by stochastic dissipative molecular dynamics (SDMD) simulations. A generic constraint to the equations of motion is given that reduces the sensitivity of the shear viscosity to the value of the the fluctuation-dissipation or thermostat parameter. At high shear rates the shear viscosity becomes dependent on the size of the system, and corrections to the equipartition kinetic temperature arise. At constant kinetic temperature the shear viscosity is shown to decrease with increasing shear rate.
Recently there has been growing interest in nanofluids and nanodroplet engineering and applications. In this paper we derive a theory of Lennard-Jones fluids in multiphase dynamics from the information theoretic approach in analogy to the fully quantum mechanical theory of phase transitions. We derive least biased distributions of the particles and some analytic solutions are obtained.
Detailed studies of the thermodynamic properties of selected binary Lennard-Jones clusters of the type X_{13-n}Y_n (where n=1,2,3) are presented. The total energy, heat capacity and first derivative of the heat capacity as a function of temperature are calculated by using the classical and path integral Monte Carlo methods combined with the parallel tempering technique. A modification in the phase change phenomena from the presence of impurity atoms and quantum effects is investigated.
In this communication we show that the surface tension of the real fluids of the Lennard-Jones type can be obtained from the surface tension of the lattice gas (Ising model) on the basis of the global isomorphism approach developed earlier for the bulk properties.
The definitions of breaks and clusters in a one-dimensional chain in equilibrium are discussed. Analytical expressions are obtained for the expected cluster length, $\langle K \rangle$, as a function of temperature and pressure in a one-dimensional Lennard-Jones chain. These expressions are compared with results from molecular dynamics simulations. It is found that $\langle K \rangle$ increases exponentially with $β= 1/k_BT$ and with pressure, $P$ in agreement with previous results in the literature. A method is illustrated for using $\langle K \rangle (β, P)$ to generate a "phase diagram" for…
Using standard thermodynamics and previous results of the author, this paper aims to discuss the conditions for phase equilibrium in a Lennard-Jones fluid. Possibilities of astrophysical applications of the results obtained here are discussed to some extent.
The dynamics of the expansion of a Lennard-Jones system, initially confined at high density and subsequently expanding freely in the vacuum, is confronted to an expanding statistical ensemble, derived in the diluted quasi-ideal Boltzmann approximation. The description proves to be fairly accurate at predicting average one-body global observables, but important deviations are observed in the configuration-space structure of the events. Possible implications for finite expanding physical systems are outlined.
We report a Phase Switch Monte Carlo (PSMC) method study of the freezing line of the Lennard-Jones (LJ) fluid. Our work generalizes to soft potentials the original application of the method to hard sphere freezing, and builds on a previous PSMC study of the LJ system by Errington (J. Chem. Phys. {\bf 120}, 3130 (2004)). The latter work is extended by tracing a large section of the Lennard-Jones freezing curve, the results for which we compare to a previous Gibbs-Duhem integration study. Additionally we provide new background regarding the statistical mechanical basis of the PSMC method and ext…
We present a systematic study of the thermodynamics of two and three-dimensional generalized Lennard-Jones ($LJ$) systems focusing on the relationship between the range of the potential, the system density and its dimension. We found that the existence of negative specific heats depends on these three factors and not only on the potential range and the density of the system as stated in recent contributions.
This note examines the second virial coefficient for an imperfect gas subject to a 2n-n interparticle potential in any dimension d between 0 and n. A compact analytic expression is presented for this quantity which shows that, apart from a numerical factor, its temperature dependence is a universal function parameterized by d/n.
We reanalyse the cell theory of Lennard-Jones and Devonshire and find that in addition to the critical point originally reported for the 12-6 potential (and widely quoted in standard textbooks), the model exhibits a further critical point. We show that the latter is actually a more appropriate candidate for liquid-gas criticality than the original critical point.
We study, through molecular dynamics, a conservative two-dimensional Lennard-Jones-like gas (with attractive potential $\propto r^{-α}$). We consider the effect of the range index $α$ of interactions, number of particles, total energy and particle density. We detect negative specific heat when the interactions become long-ranged ($0\le α/d<1$).
We apply the conformational space annealing (CSA) method to the Lennard-Jones clusters and find all known lowest energy configurations up to 201 atoms, without using extra information of the problem such as the structures of the known global energy minima. In addition, the robustness of the algorithm with respect to the randomness of initial conditions of the problem is demonstrated by ten successful independent runs up to 183 atoms. Our results indicate that the CSA method is a general and yet efficient global optimization algorithm applicable to many systems.
The aim of this paper is to present an analytical calculation of the chemical potential of a Lennard Jones fluid. The integration range is divided into two regions. In the small distance region, which is $r\leqσ$ in the usual notation, the integration range had to be cut off in order to avoid the occurence of divergences. In the large distance region, the calculation is technically simpler. The calculation reported here will be useful in all kinds of studies concerning phase equilibrium in a $LJ$ fluid. Interesting kinds of such systems are the giant planets and the icy satellites in various plane…
We reaccess the droplet condensation-evaporation transition of a three-dimensional Lennard-Jones system upon a temperature change. With the help of parallel multicanonical simulations we obtain precise estimates of the transition temperature and the width of the transition for systems with up to 2048 particles. This allows us to supplement previous observations of finite-size scaling regimes with a clearer picture also for the case of a continuous particle model.
This is a Reply to the Comment of Muessel and Rieger cond-mat/9804063 to out paper on ``Aging Effects in a Lennerd-Jones Glass''. We show that the scaling function proposed by Muessel and Rieger does not lead to a satisfactory scaling of our aging data.
It is demonstrated that the crossover between gas- and liquid-like regions on the phase diagram of the Lennard-Jones system occurs at a fixed value of the density divided by its value at the freezing point, $ρ/ρ_{\rm fr}\simeq 0.35$. This definition is consistent with other definitions proposed recently. As a result a very simple practical expression for the gas-to-liquid crossover line emerges.
A method of obtaining the critical temperature from within a supercritical mesophase bounded by percolation transition loci is described. We report thermodynamic pressures from MD simulations for more than 2000 state points along 7 near-critical isotherms of a Lennard-Jones fluid. Direct evaluation of Gibbs chemical potential along the critical isotherm reaffirms the existence of a supercritical mesophaseand a line of critical states and non-existence of van der Waals critical point.
The thermal conductivity is calculated with the Helfand-moment method in the Lennard-Jones fluid near the triple point. The Helfand moment of thermal conductivity is here derived for molecular dynamics with periodic boundary conditions. Thermal conductivity is given by a generalized Einstein relation with this Helfand moment. We compute thermal conductivity by this new method and compare it with our own values obtained by the standard Green-Kubo method. The agreement is excellent.
A simple model is proposed for the direct correlation function (DCF) for simple fluids consisting of a hard-core contribution, a simple parametrized core correction, and a mean-field tail. The model requires as input only the free energy of the homogeneous fluid, obtained, e.g., from thermodynamic perturbation theory. Comparison to the DCF obtained from simulation of a Lennard-Jones fluid shows this to be a surprisingly good approximation for a wide range of densities. The model is used to construct a density functional theory for inhomogeneous fluids which is applied to the problem of calcula…
We calculate the density of states of a binary Lennard-Jones glass using a recently proposed Monte Carlo algorithm. Unlike traditional molecular simulation approaches, the algorithm samples distinct configurations according to self-consistent estimates of the density of states, thereby giving rise to uniform internal-energy histograms. The method is applied to simulate the equilibrium, low-temperature thermodynamic properties of a widely studied glass former consisting of a binary mixture of Lennard-Jones particles. We show how a density-of-states algorithm can be combined with particle identi…
Depositions of amorphous Lennard-Jones clusters on a crystalline surface are numerically investigated. From the results of the molecular dynamics simulation, we found that the deposited clusters exhibit a transition from multilayered adsorption to monolayered adsorption at a critical incident speed. Employing the energy conservation law, we can explain the behavior of the ratio of the number of atoms adsorbed on the substrate to the cluster size. The boundary shape of the deposited cluster depends strongly on the incident speed and some unstable modes grow during the spread of the deposited cl…
In the paper we propose an universal bridge functional for the closure of the Ornstein-Zernike (OZ) equation for the case of infinitely diluted solutions of Lennard-Jones shperes of different size in the Lennard-Jones fluid. Bridge functional is paprameterized using the data of the Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations. We show that for all investigated systems the bridge functional can be efficiently papameterized with the exponential function which depends only on the ratio of sizes of the solute and solvent atoms. To check the parameterization we solve the OZ equation with the closure which i…
The dynamical correlations of a model consisting of particles constrained on the line and interacting with a nearest--neighbour Lennard--Jones potential are computed by molecular--dynamics simulations. A drastic qualitative change of the spectral shape, from a phonon--like to a diffusive form, is observed upon reducing the particle density even ad moderate temperatures. The latter scenario is due to the spontaneus fragmentation of the crystal--like structure into an ensemble of "clusters" colliding among themselves. In both cases, the spectral linewidths do not follow the usual q^2 behaviour f…
We introduce a nonequilibrium off--lattice model for anisotropic phenomena in fluids. This is a Lennard--Jones generalization of the driven lattice--gas model in which the particles' spatial coordinates vary continuously. A comparison between the two models allows us to discuss some exceptional, hardly realistic features of the original discrete system --which has been considered a prototype for nonequilibrium anisotropic phase transitions. We thus help to clarify open issues, and discuss on the implications of our observations for future investigation of anisotropic phase transitions.
We present a computer simulation study of a (6,12)-Lennard-Jones fluid confined to a slit pore, formed by two uniform planes. These interact via a (3,9)-Lennard-Jones potential with the fluid particles. When the fluid approaches the liquid-to-solid transition we first observe layering parallel to the walls. In order to investigate the nature of the freezing transition, we performed a detailed analysis of the bond-orientational order parameter in the layers. Changing the distance between the slit wall, we studied howthe behaviour changes from a quasi-2d crystallization without hysteresis and an…
A four-time correlation function was calculated using a computer simulation of a binary Lennard-Jones mixture. The information content of the four-time correlation function is similar to that of four-time correlation functions measured in NMR experiments. The correlation function selects a sub-ensemble and analyzes its dynamics after some waiting time. The lifetime of the sub-ensemble selected by the four-time correlation function is calculated, and compared to the lifetimes of slow sub-ensembles selected using two different definitions of mobility, and to the $α$ relaxation time.
We investigate by Molecular Dynamics simulation a system of $N$ particles moving on the surface of a two-dimensional sphere and interacting by a Lennard-Jones potential. We detail the way to account for the changes brought by a nonzero curvature, both at a methodological and at a physical level. When compared to a two-dimensional Lennard-Jones liquid on the Euclidean plane, where a phase transition to an ordered hexagonal phase takes place, we find that the presence of excess defects imposed by the topology of the sphere frustrates the hexagonal order. We observe at high density a rapid increa…
We study the liquid-glass transition of the Lennard-Jones binary mixture introduced by Kob and Andersen from a thermodynamic point of view. By means of the replica approach, translating the problem in the study of a molecular liquid, we study the phase transition due to the entropy crisis and we find that the Kauzmann's temperature $\tk$ is $\sim 0.32$. At the end we compare analytical predictions with numerical results.
Non-equilibrium Molecular Dynamics (NEMD) calculations of the bulk viscosity of the triple point Lennard-Jones fluid are performed with the aim of investigating the origin of the observed disagreement between Green-Kubo estimates and previous NEMD data. We show that a careful application of the Doll's perturbation field, the dynamical NEMD method, the instantaneous form of the perturbation and the "subtraction technique" provides a NEMD estimate of the bulk viscosity at zero field in full agreement with the value obtained by the Green-Kubo formula. As previously reported for the shear viscosit…
In a recent letter [PRL 78 (1997) 4581] Kob and Barrat reported results of their molecular dynamics simulation of the non-equilibrium dynamics of a binary Lennard-Jones glass. They propose an aging scenario in this system that is close to a t/t_w scaling behavior. In this comment we present new results and show that a different aging scenario, known under the name activated dynamics scaling [i.e. log((t+t_w)/tau)/log(t_w/tau)], describes the aging regime of this kind of glassy systems much better.
To describe short-time (picosecond) and small-scale (nanometre) transport in fluids, a Green's function approach was recently developed. This approach relies on an expansion of the distribution of single particle displacements around a Gaussian function, yielding an infinite series of correction terms. Applying a recent theorem [Van Zon and Cohen, J. Stat. Phys. 123, 1-37 (2006)] shows that for sufficiently small times the terms in this series become successively smaller, so that truncating the series near or at the Gaussian level might provide a good approximation. In the present paper, we de…
We use a standard Monte-Carlo algorithm to study the slow dynamics of a binary Lennard-Jones glass-forming mixture at low temperature. We find that Monte-Carlo is by far the most efficient way to simulate a stochastic dynamics since relaxation is about 10 times faster than in Brownian Dynamics and about 30 times faster than in Stochastic Dynamics. Moreover, the average dynamical behaviour of the system is in quantitative agreement with the one obtained using Newtonian dynamics, apart at very short times where thermal vibrations are suppressed. We show, however, that dynamic fluctuations quanti…
In two recent interesting letters evidence was presented for the existence of a growing dynamic correlation length when we approach the glass transition from the liquid phase (a similar divergence is present also in the off-equilibrium dynamics below $T_c$). Here we would like to point out that this phenomenon can be easily predicted using the replica approach.
We reveal the existence of systematic variations of isobaric fragility in different supercooled Lennard-Jones binary mixtures by performing molecular dynamics simulations. The connection between fragility and local structures in the bulk is analyzed by means of a Voronoi construction. We find that clusters of particles belonging to locally preferred structures form slow, long-lived domains, whose spatial extension increases by decreasing temperature. As a general rule, a more rapid growth, upon supercooling, of such domains is associated to a more pronounced super-Arrhenius behavior, hence to …
It is difficult to derive the solid-fluid transition theoretically from microscopic models, although this phenomenon itself has been investigated for a long time. We previously constructed an exactly-solvable model with the solid-fluid transition. This model resembles the infinite-range (or mean-field) model in spin systems in some points, hence it can be called a "mean-field model" of the solid-fluid transition. In the present paper, we construct a "mean-field approximation" of the solid-fluid transition by using the "mean-field model" introduced in our previous study, and tries to describe t…
By means of molecular dynamics simulations, we study the stationary points of the potential energy in a Lennard-Jones liquid, giving a purely geometric characterization of the energy landscape of the system. We find a linear relation between the degree of instability of the stationary points and their potential energy, and we locate the energy where the instability vanishes. This threshold energy marks the border between saddle-dominated and minima-dominated regions of the energy landscape. The temperature where the potential energy of the Stillinger-Weber minima becomes equal to the threshold…
By using extensive Molecular Dynamics simulations, we have determined the violation of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem in a Lennard-Jones liquid quenched to low temperatures. For this we have calculated $X(C)$, the ratio between a one particle time-correlation function $C$ and the associated response function. Our results are best fitted by assuming that $X(C)$ is a discontinuous, piecewise constant function. This is similar to what is found in spin systems with one step replica symmetry breaking. This strengthen the conjecture of a similarity between the phase space structure of structura…
We apply the recently developed adaptive ensemble optimization technique to simulate dense Lennard-Jones fluids and a particle-solvent model by broad-histogram Monte Carlo techniques. Equilibration of the simulated fluid is improved by sampling an optimized histogram in radial coordinates that shifts statistical weight towards the entropic barriers between the shells of the liquid. Interstitial states in the vicinity of these barriers are identified with unprecedented accuracy by sharp signatures in the quickly converging histogram and measurements of the local diffusivity. The radial distribu…
Longitudinal and transverse sound velocities of Lennard-Jones systems are calculated at the liquid-solid coexistence using the additivity principle. The results are shown to agree well with the ``exact'' values obtained from their relations to excess energy and pressure. Some consequences, in particular, in the context of the Lindemann's melting rule and Stokes-Einstein relation between the self-diffusion and viscosity coefficients are discussed. Comparison with available experimental data on the sound velocities of solid argon at melting conditions is provided.
The phase diagram of the prototypical two-dimensional Lennard-Jones system, while extensively investigated, is still debated. In particular, there are controversial results in the literature as concern the existence of the hexatic phase and the melting scenario. Here, we study the phase behaviour of 2D LJ particles via large-scale numerical simulations. We demonstrate that at high temperature, when the attraction in the potential plays a minor role, melting occurs via a continuous solid-hexatic transition followed by a first-order hexatic-fluid transition. As the temperature decreases, the den…
We numerically investigated the connection between isobaric fragility and the properties of high-order stationary points of the potential energy surface in different supercooled Lennard-Jones mixtures. The increase of effective activation energies upon supercooling appears to be driven by the increase of average potential energy barriers measured by the energy dependence of the fraction of unstable modes. Such an increase is sharper, the more fragile is the mixture. Correlations between fragility and other properties of high-order stationary points, including the vibrational density of states …
Vibrational spectra of closed shell Lennard-Jones icosahedral and cuboctahedral clusters are calculated for shell numbers between 2 and 9. Evolution of the vibrational density of states with the cluster shell number is examined and differences between icosahedral and cuboctahedral clusters described. This enabled a quantum calculation of quantum ground state energies of the clusters in the quasiharmonic approximation and a comparison of the differences between the two types of clusters. It is demonstrated that in the quantum treatment, the closed shell icosahedral clusters binding energies dif…
We have established the surface tension relaxation time in the liquid-solid interfaces of Lennard-Jones (LJ) liquids by means of direct measurements in molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The main result is that the relaxation time is found to be weakly dependent on the molecular structures used in our study and lies in such a range that in slow hydrodynamic motion the interfaces are expected to be at equilibrium. The implications of our results for the modelling of dynamic wetting processes and interpretation of dynamic contact angle data are discussed.
By means of extensive equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations we have investigated, the behavior of the interfacial tension $γ$ of two immiscible symmetrical Lennard-Jones fluids. This quantity is studied as function of reduced temperature $T^{*}={{k_{_B} T}\over ε}$ in the range $0.6 \leq T^{*} \leq 3.0$. We find that, unlike the monotonic decay obtained for the liquid-vapor interfacial tension, for the liquid-liquid interface, $γ(T)$ has a maximum at a specific temperature. We also investigate the effect that surfactant-like particles has on the thermodynamic as well as the structural pro…
We studied the possibility to approximate a Lennard Jones interaction by a pairwise contact potential. First we used a Lennard-Jones potential to design off-lattice, protein-like heteropolymer sequences, whose lowest energy (native) conformations were then identified by Molecular Dynamics. Then we turned to investigate whether one can find a pairwise contact potential, whose ground states are the contact maps associated with these native conformations. We show that such a requirement cannot be satisfied exactly - i.e. no such contact parameters exist. Nevertheless, we found that one can find c…
The gas-liquid phase transition of the three-dimensional Lennard-Jones particles system is studied by molecular dynamics simulations. The gas and liquid densities in the coexisting state are determined with high accuracy. The critical point is determined by the block density analysis of the Binder parameter with the aid of the law of rectilinear diameter. From the critical behavior of the gas-liquid coexsisting density, the critical exponent of the order parameter is estimated to be $β= 0.3285(7)$. Surface tension is estimated from interface broadening behavior due to capillary waves. From the…
Molecular dynamics simulations are used to generate an ensemble of saddles of the potential energy of a Lennard-Jones liquid. Classifying all extrema by their potential energy u and number of unstable directions k, a well defined relation k(u) is revealed. The degree of instability of typical stationary points vanishes at a threshold potential energy, which lies above the energy of the lowest glassy minima of the system. The energies of the inherent states, as obtained by the Stillinger-Weber method, approach the threshold energy at a temperature close to the mode-coupling transition temperatu…
Solvent-mediated interactions emerge from complex mechanisms that depend on the solute structure, its wetting properties and the nature of the liquid. While numerous studies have focused on the two first influences, here, we compare results from water and Lennard-Jones liquid in order to reveal to what extent solvent-mediated interactions are universal with respect to the nature of the liquid. Besides the influence of the liquid, results were obtained with classical density functional theory and brute-force molecular dynamics simulations which allows us to contrast these two numerical techniqu…
We conduct a numerical investigation of structural order in the shifted-force Lennard-Jones system by calculating metrics of translational and bond-orientational order along various paths in the phase diagram covering equilibrium solid, liquid, and vapor states. A series of non-equilibrium configurations generated through isochoric quenches, isothermal compressions, and energy minimizations are also considered. Simulation results are analyzed using an ordering map representation [Torquato et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 84, 2064 (2000); Truskett et al., Phys. Rev. E 62, 993 (2000)] that assigns to bo…
Theoretical design of global optimization algorithms can profitably utilize recent statistical mechanical treatments of potential energy surfaces (PES's). Here we analyze the basin-hopping algorithm to explain its success in locating the global minima of Lennard-Jones (LJ) clusters, even those such as \LJ{38} for which the PES has a multiple-funnel topography, where trapping in local minima with different morphologies is expected. We find that a key factor in overcoming trapping is the transformation applied to the PES which broadens the thermodynamic transitions. The global minimum then has a…
A thermodynamic approach to derive the liquid-glass transition line in the reduced temperature vs reduced density plane for a monatomic Lennard-Jones fluid is presented. The approach makes use of a recent reformulation of the classical perturbation theory of liquids [M. Robles and M. López de Haro, Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys. {\bf 3}, 5528 (2001)] which is at grips with a rational function approximation for the Laplace transform of the radial distribution function of the hard-sphere fluid. The only input required is an equation of state for the hard-sphere system. Within the Mansoori-Canfield/Rasa…
Liquids displaying strong virial-potential energy correlations conform to an approximate density scaling of their structural and dynamical observables. This scaling property does not extend to the entire phase diagram, in general. The validity of the scaling can be quantified by a correlation coefficient. In this work a simple scheme to predict the correlation coefficient and the density-scaling exponent is presented. Although this scheme is exact only in the dilute gas regime or in high dimension d, a comparison with results from molecular dynamics simulations in d = 1 to 4 shows that it repr…
Results for the kinetics of vapor-liquid phase transition have been presented from the molecular dynamics simulations of a single component two-dimensional Lennard-Jones fluid. The phase diagram for the model, primary prerequisite for this purpose, has been obtained via the Monte Carlo simulations. Our focus is on the region very close to the vapor branch of the coexistence curve. Quenches to such region provide morphology that consists of disconnected circular liquid clusters in the vapor background. We identified that these clusters exhibit diffusive motion and grow via sticky collisions amo…
We propose a new method, the Helfand-moment method, to compute the shear viscosity by equilibrium molecular dynamics in periodic systems. In this method, the shear viscosity is written as an Einstein-like relation in terms of the variance of the so-called Helfand moment. This quantity, is modified in order to satisfy systems with periodic boundary conditions usually considered in molecular dynamics. We calculate the shear viscosity in the Lennard-Jones fluid near the triple point thanks to this new technique. We show that the results of the Helfand-moment method are in excellent agreement with…
We investigate the jump motion among potential energy minima of a Lennard-Jones model glass former by extensive computer simulation. From the time series of minima energies, it becomes clear that the energy landscape is organized in superstructures, called metabasins. We show that diffusion can be pictured as a random walk among metabasins, and that the whole temperature dependence resides in the distribution of waiting times. The waiting time distribution exhibits algebraic decays: $τ^{-1/2}$ for very short times and $τ^{-α}$ for longer times, where $α\approx2$ near $T_c$. We demonstrate that…
We present a computer simulation study of a (6,12)-Lennard-Jones fluid confined to a slit pore, formed by two uniform planes. These interact via (3,9)-Lennard-Jones potential with the fluid particles. When the fluid approaches the liquid-to-solid transition we first observe layering parallel to the walls. In order to investigate the nature of the freezing transition we performed a detailed analysis of the bond-orientational order parameter in the layers. We found no signs of hexatic order which would indicate a melting scenario of the Kosterlitz-Thouless type. An analysis of the mean-square di…
The manner in which the intermolecular potential u(r) governs structural relaxation in liquids is a long standing problem in condensed matter physics. Herein we show that diffusion coefficients for simulated Lennard-Jones m-6 liquids (8<m<36) in normal and moderately supercooled states are a unique function of the variable rho^g/T, where rho is density and T is temperature. The scaling exponent g is a material specific constant whose magnitude is related to the steepness of the repulsive part of u(r), evaluated around the distance of closest approach between particles probed in the supercooled…
We show that, along the critical isobar, the complete scaling results in a unique leading scaling qualitatively distinct to that arising from the simple and the revised scalings. This is verified by a complete-field finite-time scaling theory, which combines the complete scaling with finite-time scaling, and its application to the molecular dynamics simulations of the vapor-liquid critical point of a three-dimensional one-component Lennard-Jones fluid in an isobaric-isothermal ensemble with linear heating or cooling. Both the static and the dynamic critical exponents as well as the critical pa…
