We numerically investigated the connection between isobaric fragility and the properties of high-order stationary points of the potential energy surface in different supercooled Lennard-Jones mixtures. The increase of effective activation energies upon supercooling appears to be driven by the increase of average potential energy barriers measured by the energy dependence of the fraction of unstable modes. Such an increase is sharper, the more fragile is the mixture. Correlations between fragility and other properties of high-order stationary points, including the vibrational density of states and the localization features of unstable modes, are also discussed.
We reveal the existence of systematic variations of isobaric fragility in different supercooled Lennard-Jones binary mixtures by performing molecular dynamics simulations. The connection between fragility and local structures in the bulk is analyzed by means of a Voronoi construction. We find that clusters of particles belonging to locally preferred structures form slow, long-lived domains, whose spatial extension increases by decreasing temperature. As a general rule, a more rapid growth, upon supercooling, of such domains is associated to a more pronounced super-Arrhenius behavior, hence to …
The manner in which the intermolecular potential u(r) governs structural relaxation in liquids is a long standing problem in condensed matter physics. Herein we show that diffusion coefficients for simulated Lennard-Jones m-6 liquids (8<m<36) in normal and moderately supercooled states are a unique function of the variable rho^g/T, where rho is density and T is temperature. The scaling exponent g is a material specific constant whose magnitude is related to the steepness of the repulsive part of u(r), evaluated around the distance of closest approach between particles probed in the supercooled…
We investigate the jump motion among potential energy minima of a Lennard-Jones model glass former by extensive computer simulation. From the time series of minima energies, it becomes clear that the energy landscape is organized in superstructures, called metabasins. We show that diffusion can be pictured as a random walk among metabasins, and that the whole temperature dependence resides in the distribution of waiting times. The waiting time distribution exhibits algebraic decays: $τ^{-1/2}$ for very short times and $τ^{-α}$ for longer times, where $α\approx2$ near $T_c$. We demonstrate that…
Using molecular dynamics simulations, we study the slow dynamics of supercooled liquids confined in a random matrix of immobile obstacles. We study the dynamical crossover from glass-like to Lorentz-gas-like behavior in terms of the density correlation function, the mean square displacement, the nonlinear dynamic susceptibility, the non-Gaussian parameter, and the fragility. Cooperative and spatially heterogeneous dynamics are suppressed as the obstacle density increases, which lead to the more Arrhenius-like behavior in the temperature dependence of the relaxation time. Our findings are quali…
We analyze results for the Boson Peak from the neutron time of flight spectroscopy data on Ge-As-Se, and Raman spectra data on m-TCP and OTP, using a recent mode coupling model that takes into account the coupling of density fluctuations with vibrational modes in presence of defects in the supercooled state. From the experimental results for different materials we observe that for more fragile systems characterized by increasing fragility parameter m, a slower relaxation of the defect-density correlation is needed to give rise to the observed peak in the spectra.
An analysis of diffusion in a supercooled liquid based solely in the density of diffusive directions and the value of energy barriers shows how the potential energy landscape (PEL) approach is capable of explaining the $α$ and $β$ relaxations and the fragility of a glassy system. We find that the $β$ relaxation is directly related to the search for diffusive directions. Our analysis shows how in strong liquids diffusion is mainly energy activated, and how in fragile liquids the diffusion is governed by the density of diffusive directions. We describe the fragile-to-strong crossover as a change…
The term "fragility" describes the rate at which viscosity grows when a supercooled liquid approaches its putative glass transition temperature. The field of glassy materials is actively searching for a structural origin that governs this dynamical slowing down in the supercooled liquid, which occurs without any discernible change in structure. Our work shows clear evidence that growing many-body static amorphous order is intimately correlated with the kinetic fragility of glass-forming liquids. It confirms that the system's dynamical response to temperature is concealed in its micro-structure…
In two recent interesting letters evidence was presented for the existence of a growing dynamic correlation length when we approach the glass transition from the liquid phase (a similar divergence is present also in the off-equilibrium dynamics below $T_c$). Here we would like to point out that this phenomenon can be easily predicted using the replica approach.
We make a first principle calculation of the fragility index $m$ of a simple liquid using the structure of the supercooled liquid as an input. Using the density functional theory (DFT) of classical liquids, the configurational entropy ${\cal S}_c$ is obtained for low degree of supercooling. We extrapolate this data to estimate the Kauzmann temperature $T_\mathrm{K}$ for the liquid. Using the Adam-Gibbs relation, we link the configurational entropy ${\cal S}_c$ to the relaxation time. The relaxation times are obtained from direct solutions of the equations of fluctuating nonlinear hydrodynamics…
Polydispersity is found to have a significant effect on the potential energy landscape; the the average inherent structure energy with temperature decreases with polydispersity. Increasing polydispersity at fixed volume fraction decreases the glass transition temperature and the fragility of glass formation analogous to the antiplasticization seen in some polymeric melts. An interesting temperature dependent crossover of heterogeneity with polydispersity is observed at low temperature due to the faster build-up of dynamic heterogeneity at lower polydispersity.
For a deeply supercooled liquid just above its glass transition temperature, we present a simple thermodynamic model, where the deeply supercooled liquid is assumed to be a mixture of solid-like and liquid-like micro regions. The mole fraction of the liquid-like regions controls the thermodynamic properties of the supercooled liquid while that of the solid-like regions controls its relaxation time or viscosity. From the universal temperature dependence of the molar excess entropy for the deeply supercooled liquids, we derive the temperature dependence of the mole fraction of the liquid-like re…
Using a novel thermodynamic integration scheme, we compute the excess free energy, $γ$, of a glass-forming, binary Lennard-Jones liquid in contact with a frozen amorphous wall, formed by particles frozen into a similar structure as the liquid. We find that $γ$ is non-zero, becoming negative at low temperature. This indicates that the thermodynamics of the system is perturbed by the effect of the amorphous wall.
In this article we review the thermodynamics of liquids in the framework of the inherent structure formalism. We then present calculations of the distribution of the basins in the potential energy of a binary Lennard-Jones mixture as a function of temperature. The comparison between the numerical data and the theoretical formalism allows us to evaluate the degeneracy of the inherent structures in a bulk system and to estimate the energy of the lowest energy disordered state (the Kauzmann energy). We find that, around the mode-coupling temperature, the partition function of the liquid is approx…
We have performed non-equilibrium dynamics simulations of a binary Lennard-Jones mixture in which an external force is applied on a single tagged particle. For the diffusive properties of this particle parallel to the force superdiffusive behavior at intermediate times as well as giant long-time diffusivity is observed. A quantitative description of this non-trivial behavior is given by a continuous time random walk analysis of the system in configuration space. We further demonstrate, that the same physical properties which are responsible for the superdiffusivity in non-equilibrium systems a…
We propose a quantitative measure of a time scale on which Fickian diffusion sets in for supercooled liquids and use Brownian Dynamics computer simulations to determine the temperature dependence of this onset time in a Lennard-Jones binary mixture. The time for the onset of Fickian diffusion ranges between 6.5 and 31 times the $α$ relaxation time (the $α$ relaxation time is the characteristic relaxation time of the incoherent intermediate scattering function). The onset time increases faster with decreasing temperature than the $α$ relaxation time. Mean squared displacement at the onset time …
We present a quantitative description of the thermodynamics in a supercooled binary Lennard Jones liquid via the evaluation of the degeneracy of the inherent structures, i.e. of the number of potential energy basins in configuration space. We find that for supercooled states, the contribution of the inherent structures to the free energy of the liquid almost completely decouples from the vibrational contribution. An important byproduct of the presented analysis is the determination of the Kauzmann temperature for the studied system. The resulting quantitative picture of the thermodynamics of t…
The mode-coupling theory of the glass transition treats the dynamics of supercooled liquids in terms of two-point density correlation functions. Here we consider a generalized, hierarchical formulation of schematic mode-coupling equations in which the full basis of multipoint density correlations is taken into account. By varying the parameters that control the effective contributions of higher-order correlations, we show that infinite hierarchies can give rise to both sharp and avoided glass transitions. Moreover, small changes in the form of the coefficients result in different scaling behav…
We report the observation of a distinct correlation between the kinetic fragility index $m$ and the reduced Arrhenius crossover temperature $θ_A = T_A/T_g$ in various glass-forming liquids, identifying three distinguishable groups. In particular, for 11 glass-forming metallic liquids, we universally observe a crossover in the mean diffusion coefficient from high-temperature Arrhenius to low-temperature super-Arrhenius behavior at approximately $θ_A \approx 2$ which is in the stable liquid phases. In contrast, for fragile molecular liquids, this crossover occurs at much lower $θ_A \approx 1.4$ …
The characterization of the formation mechanisms of amorphous solids is a large avenue for research, since understanding its non-Arrhenius behavior is challenging to overcome. In this context, we present one path toward modeling the diffusive processes in supercooled liquids near glass transition through a class of non-homogeneous continuity equations, providing a consistent theoretical basis for the physical interpretation of its non-Arrhenius behavior. More precisely, we obtain the generalized drag and diffusion coefficients that allow us to model a wide range of non-Arrhenius processes. Thi…
We report the analysis in the wavevector space of the density correlator of a Lennard Jones binary mixture confined in a disordered matrix of soft spheres upon supercooling. In spite of the strong confining medium the behavior of the mixture is consistent with the Mode Coupling Theory predictions for bulk supercooled liquids. The relaxation times extracted from the fit of the density correlator to the stretched exponential function follow a unique power law behavior as a function of wavevector and temperature. The von Schweidler scaling properties are valid for an extended wavevector range aro…
The concept of fragility provides a possibility to rank different supercooled liquids on the basis of the temperature dependence of dynamic and/or thermodynamic quantities. We recall here the definitions of kinetic and thermodynamic fragility proposed in the last years and discuss their interrelations. At the same time we analyze some recently introduced models for the statistical properties of the potential energy landscape. Building on the Adam-Gibbs relation, which connects structural relaxation times to configurational entropy, we analyze the relation between statistical properties of the …
We investigate the calorimetric liquid-glass transition by performing simulations of a binary Lennard-Jones mixture in one through four dimensions. Starting at a high temperature, the systems are cooled to T=0 and heated back to the ergodic liquid state at constant rates. Glass transitions are observed in two, three and four dimensions as a hysteresis between the cooling and heating curves. This hysteresis appears in the energy and pressure diagrams, and the scanning-rate dependence of the area and height of the hysteresis can be described by power laws. The one dimensional system does not exp…
We find that a Lennard-Jones mixture displays a dynamic phase transition between an active regime and an inactive one. By means of molecular dynamics simulations and of a finite-size study, we show that the space time dynamics in the supercooled regime coincides with a dynamic first order transition point.
We present the results of a Molecular Dynamics computer simulation of a binary Lennard-Jones liquid confined in a narrow pore. The surface of the pore has an amorphous structure similar to that of the confined liquid. We find that the static properties of the liquid are not affected by the confinement, while the dynamics changes dramatically. By investigating the time and temperature dependence of the intermediate scattering function we show that the dynamics of the particles close to the center of the tube is similar to the one in the bulk, whereas the characteristic relaxation time tau_q(T,r…
The mechanism of diffusion in supercooled liquids is investigated from the potential energy landscape point of view, with emphasis on the crossover from high- to low-T dynamics. Molecular dynamics simulations with a time dependent mapping to the associated local mininum or inherent structure (IS) are performed on unit-density Lennard-Jones (LJ). New dynamical quantities introduced include r2_{is}(t), the mean-square displacement (MSD) within a basin of attraction of an IS, R2(t), the MSD of the IS itself, and g_{loc}(t) the mean waiting time in a cooperative region. At intermediate T, r2_{is}(…
We introduce the ideal Gaussian glass-forming system as a model to describe the thermodynamics and dynamics of supercooled liquids on a local scale in terms of the properties of the potential energy landscape (PEL). The first ingredient is the Gaussian distribution of inherent structures, the second a specific relation between energy and mobility. This model is compatible with general considerations as well as with several computer simulations on atomic computer glass-formers. Important observables such as diffusion constants, structural relaxation times and kinetic as well as thermodynamic fr…
