We study the Cooper minimum in high harmonic generation from argon atoms using long wavelength laser pulses. We find that the minimum in high harmonic spectra is systematically shifted with respect to total photoionization cross section measurements. We use a semi-classical theoretical approach based on Classical Trajectory Monte Carlo and Quantum Electron Scattering methods (CTMC-QUEST) to model the experiment. Our study reveals that the shift between photoionization and high harmonic emission is due to several effects: the directivity of the recombining electrons and emitted polarization, and the shape of the recolliding electron wavepacket.
We experimentally investigate the generation of above-threshold harmonics completely from argon atoms on an excited state using mid-infrared femtosecond laser pulses. The highly nonlinear dependences of the observed signal on the pulse energy and polarization of the driver laser pulses indicate its non-perturbative characteristic.
Attosecond photoionization delays have mostly been interpreted within the single-particle approximation of multi-electron systems. The strong electron correlation between the photoionization channels associated with the 3p and 3s orbitals of argon presents an interesting arena where this single-particle approximation breaks down. Around photon energies of 42~eV, the 3s photoionization channel of argon experiences a ``Cooper-like" minimum, which is exclusively the result of inter-electronic correlations with the 3p shell. Photoionization delays around this ``Cooper-like" minimum have been predi…
We report the observation of multiple ionization of Argon through multi-XUV-photon absorption induced by an unprecedentedly powerful laser driven high-harmonic-generation source. Comparing the measured intensity dependence of the yield of the different Argon charge states with numerical calculations we can infer the different channels -direct and sequential- underlying the interaction. While such studies were feasible so far only with FEL sources, this work connects highly-non-linear-XUV-processes with the ultra-short time scales, inherent to the harmonic pulses, and highlights the advanced pe…
Using a spectrally resolved electron interferometry technique, we measure photoionization time delays between the $3s$ and $3p$ subshells of argon over a large 34-eV energy range covering the Cooper minima in both subshells. The observed strong variations of the $3s-3p$ delay difference, including a sign change, are well reproduced by theoretical calculations using the Two-Photon Two-Color Random Phase Approximation with Exchange. Strong shake-up channels lead to photoelectrons spectrally overlapping with those emitted from the $3s$ subshell. These channels need to be included in our analysis …
We present an analysis of the appearance of the Cooper Minimum in singly ionized argon in both the photoionization cross-section (PICS) and high-harmonic generation (HHG) spectrum. We employ two computational approaches based on the same R-matrix technique to provide a coherent description of the atomic structure of the Ar+ system, finding that the PICS and HHG spectrum are affected differently by the inclusion of additional residual ion states and the improved description of correlation effects. Both the PICS and HHG spectrum possess a clear minimum for all atomic structure models used, with …
We present an experimental study on the photoionization dynamics of non-resonant one-color two-photon single valence ionization of neutral argon atoms. Using 9.3 eV photons produced via high harmonic generation and a 3-D momentum imaging spectrometer, we detect the photoelectrons and ions produced from non-resonant two-photon ionization in coincidence. Photoionization from the $3p$ orbital produces a photoelectron scattering wave function with $p$ and $f$ partial wave components, which interfere and result in a photoelectron angular distribution with peak amplitude perpendicular to the VUV pol…
We perform numerical simulations for photoionization of the argon atom when exposed to a combined field of an infrared laser (abbreviated IR) and its 13th harmonic (H13) by solving the Time-Dependent Schrödinger Equation (TDSE)], noting that the associated energy spectrum displays a harmonic peak dressed by the IR and other peaks called side-bands SB+-n corresponds to the absorption (+n) and the emission (-n) of the n-infrared photons above the ionization threshold. In two-color H13+IR photoionization of argon, the analysis of the angular distribution of the ejected electron in the continuum, …
We generate high-order harmonics at high pulse repetition rates using a turnkey laser. High-order harmonics at 400 kHz are observed when argon is used as target gas. In neon we achieve generation of photons with energies exceeding 90 eV ($\sim$13 nm) at 20 kHz. We measure a photon flux of 4.4$\cdot10^{10}$ photons per second per harmonic in argon at 100 kHz. Many experiments employing high-order harmonics would benefit from higher repetition rates, and the user-friendly operation opens up for applications of coherent extreme ultra-violet pulses in new research areas.
Isolated attosecond pulses (IAPs) produced through laser-driven high-harmonic generation (HHG) hold promise for unprecedented insight into biological processes via attosecond x-ray diffraction with tabletop sources. However, efficient scaling of HHG towards x-ray energies has been hampered by ionization-induced plasma generation impeding the coherent buildup of high-harmonic radiation. Recently, it has been shown that these limitations can be overcome in the so-called 'overdriven regime' where ionization loss and plasma dispersion strongly modify the driving laser pulse over small distances, a…
A Kohn-Sham time-dependent local-density-functional scheme is utilized to predict attosecond time delays of xenon 4d photoionization that involves the 4d giant dipole resonance and Cooper minimum. The fundamental effect of electron correlations to uniquely determine the delay at both regions is demonstrated. In particular, for the giant dipole resonance, the delay underpins strong collective effect, emulating the recent prediction at C60 giant plasmon resonance [T. Barillot et al, Phys. Rev. A 91, 033413 (2015)]. For the Cooper minimum, a qualitative similarity with a photorecombination experi…
We investigate the role of excited states in High-order Harmonic Generation by studying the spectral, spatial and temporal characteristics of the radiation produced near the ionization threshold of argon by few-cycle laser pulses. We show that the population of excited states can lead either to direct XUV emission through Free Induction Decay or to the generation of high-order harmonics through ionization from these states and recombination to the ground state. By using the attosecond lighthouse technique, we demonstrate that the high-harmonic emission from excited states is temporally delayed…
We investigate high-order harmonic generation in a solid, modeled as a multi-level system dressed by a strong infrared laser field. We show that the cutoff energies and the relative strengths of the multiple plateaus that emerge in the harmonic spectrum can be understood both qualitatively and quantitatively by considering a combination of adiabatic and diabatic processes driven by the strong field. Such a model was recently used to interpret the multiple plateaus exhibited in harmonic spectra generated by solid argon and krypton [Ndabashimiye {\it et al.}, Nature 534, 520 (2016)]. We also sho…
High-order harmonic generation with bicircular fields - the combination of counter-rotating circularly polarized pulses at different frequencies - results in a series of short-wavelength XUV harmonics with alternating circular polarizations, and experiments show that there is an asymmetry in the emission between the two helicities: a slight one in helium, and a larger one in neon and argon, where the emission is carried out by p-shell electrons. Here we analyze this asymmetry by switching to a rotating frame in which the field is linearly polarized; this induces an effective magnetic field whi…
A new High Harmonic Generation (HHG) scheme, which doesn't rely on Tunnel-Ionization as the ionization mechanism but rather on Single-Photon Ionization, is theoretically proposed and numerically demonstrated. The scheme uses two driver fields: an extreme-ultraviolet driver which induces the ionization, and a circularly-polarized, co-rotating, two-color infrared driver carried at a fundamental frequency and its second harmonic which induces the recollision. Using Classical and time-dependent Schrödinger equation simulations of a model Argon atom, we show that in this scheme ionization is essent…
We measure for the first time the duration of long-quantum path EUV high harmonics produced in xenon gas. The long-quantum path contribution to the high-harmonic signal was carefully controlled by employing a two-colour driving laser field and a high-harmonic spatial selection in the far field, over a range of $18-25\,eV$ in photon energy. To characterise the temporal profile of long quantum path high harmonics, we performed a second order volume autocorrelation ($2-IVAC$) via two EUV photon double ionization in argon. Our results show the production and characterisation of a train of EUV puls…
The sub-cycle dynamics of electrons driven by strong laser fields is central to the emerging field of attosecond science. We demonstrate how the dynamics can be probed through high-order harmonic generation, where different trajectories leading to the same harmonic order are initiated at different times, thereby probing different field strengths. We find large differences between the trajectories with respect to both their sensitivity to driving field ellipticity and resonant enhancement. To accurately describe the ellipticity dependence of the long trajectory harmonics we must include a sub-c…
The development of schemes for coherent nonlinear time-domain spectroscopy in the extreme-ultraviolet regime (XUV) has so far been impeded by experimental difficulties that arise at these short wavelengths. In this work we present a novel experimental approach, which facilitates the timing control and phase cycling of XUV pulse sequences produced by harmonic generation in rare gases. The method is demonstrated for the generation and high spectral resolution characterization of narrow-bandwidth harmonics ($\approx14\,$eV) in argon and krypton. Our technique simultaneously provides high phase st…
We report on a compact and spectrally intense extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) source, which is based on high-harmonic generation (HHG) driven by 395 nm pulses. In order to minimize the XUV virtual source size and to maximize the XUV flux, HHG is performed several Rayleigh lengths away from the driving laser focal plane in a high-density gas jet. As a result, a high focused XUV intensity of $5 \times 10^{13}$ W/cm$^2$ is achieved, using a beamline with a length of only two meters and a modest driving laser pulse energy of 3 mJ. The high XUV intensity is demonstrated by performing a nonlinear ionizati…
For exploring the application potential of coherent soft x-ray (SXR) and extreme ultraviolet radiation (XUV) provided by high-harmonic generation, it is important to characterize the central output parameters. Of specific importance are pulse-to-pulse (shot-to-shot) fluctuations of the high-harmonic output energy, fluctuations of the direction of the emission (pointing instabilities), and fluctuations of the beam divergence and shape that reduce the spatial coherence. We present the first single-shot measurements of waveguided high-harmonic generation in a waveguided (capillary-based) geometry…
Phase-of-the-phase (PoP) spectroscopy is extended to two-color laser fields having a circularly counter-rotating polarization. In particular, the higher harmonics of the (two-color) phase information are analyzed in order to extract the laser-coherent part of the photoelectron spectra taken under complex target conditions. We illustrate this with a proof-of-principle simulation by considering strong-field electron emission from argon atoms within helium nanodroplets under realistic experimental conditions, i.e., a limited number of photoemission events. Multiple elastic scattering on neutral h…
We demonstrate the capability of ab-initio time-dependent R-matrix theory to obtain accurate harmonic generation spectra of noble-gas atoms at Near-IR wavelengths between 1200 and 1800 nm and peak intensities up to 1.8 X 10(14) W/cm(2) . To accommodate the excursion length of the ejected electron, we use an angular-momentum expansion up to Lmax = 279. The harmonic spectra show evidence of atomic structure through the presence of a Cooper minimum in harmonic generation for Kr, and of multielectron interaction through the giant resonance for Xe. The theoretical spectra agree well with those obta…
We employ the R-matrix with time-dependence method to investigate extreme-ultraviolet-initiated high-harmonic generation (XIHHG) in Ar$^{+}$. Using a combination of extreme-ultraviolet (XUV, $92\textrm{ nm}$, $3\times 10^{12}\,\textrm{Wcm}^{-2}$) and time-delayed, infrared (IR, $800\textrm{ nm}$, $3\times 10^{14}\,\textrm{Wcm}^{-2}$) laser pulses, we demonstrate that control over both the mechanism, and timing, of ionization can afford significant enhancements in the yield of plateau, and sub-threshold, harmonics alike. The presence of the XUV pulse is also shown to alter the relative contribu…
We analyze interference processes in atomic ionization induced by a two-color laser with fundamental frequency $ω$ and its second harmonic $2ω$. The interplay between inter- and intracycle interference processes give rise to multiphoton peaks which can be named as main or ATI peaks and sidebands, in analogy to the well-known RABBIT (reconstruction of attosecond harmonic beating by interference of two-photon transitions). We use the saddle point approximation (SPA) to extract the complex ionization times of the interfering electron trajectories. Changing the relative phase between the two color…

Photoelectron spectroscopy is a powerful method that provides insight into the quantum mechanical properties of a wide range of systems. The ionized electron wavefunction carries information on the structure of the bound orbital, the ionic potential as well as the photo-ionization dynamics itself. While photoelectron spectroscopy resolves the absolute amplitude of the wavefunction, retrieving the spectral phase information has been a long-standing challenge. Here, we transfer the electron phase retrieval problem into an optical one by measuring the time-reversed process of photo-ionization -- …
