Extra-dimensional models can involve bulk pseudo-Goldstone bosons (pGBs) whose shift symmetry is explicitly broken only by physics localized on branes. Reliable calculation of their low-energy potential is often difficult because it requires details of the stabilization of the extra dimensions. In rugby ball solutions, for which two compact extra dimensions are stabilized in the presence of only positive-tension brane sources, the effects of brane back-reaction can be computed explicitly. This allows the calculation of the shape of the low-energy pGB potential and response of the extra dimensional geometry as a function of the perturbing brane properties. If the pGB-dependence is a small part of the total brane tension a very general analysis is possible, permitting an exploration of how the system responds to frustration when the two branes disagree on what the proper scalar vacuum should be. We show how the low-energy potential is given by the sum of brane tensions (in agreement with common lore) when only the brane tensions couple to the pGB. We also show how a direct brane coupling to the flux stabilizing the extra dimensions corrects this result in a way that does not simply amount to the contribution of the flux to the brane tensions. We calculate the mass of the would-be zero mode, and briefly describe several potential applications, including a brane realization of `natural inflation,' and a dynamical mechanism for suppressing the couplings of the pGB to matter localized on the branes. Since the scalar can be light enough to be relevant to precision tests of gravity (in a technically natural way) this mechanism can be relevant to evading phenomenological bounds.
Based on the flux-scaling scenario we study a model consisting on Type IIB string theory compactified on a Calabi-Yau manifold with a frozen complex structure in the presence of generic fluxes. The model contains (meta)stable Minkowski and de Sitter vacua as well as inflationary directions driven by two independent linear combination of axions. Due to a numerical control by fluxes, we show that cosmological parameters as the spectral index, tensor-to-scalar ratio and non-Gaussianities can be kept within observed bounds while preserving the desired hierarchies on physical scales. Moreover we co…
We study the $T$-dual completion of the four-dimensional ${\cal N}=1$ type II effective potentials in the presence of (non-)geometric fluxes. First, we invoke a cohomology version of the $T$-dual transformations among the various moduli, axions and the fluxes appearing in the type IIA and type IIB effective supergravities. This leads to some useful observations about a significant mixing of the standard NS-NS fluxes with the (non-)geometric fluxes on the mirror side. Further, using our $T$-duality rules, we establish an explicit mapping among the $F$-terms, $D$-terms, tadpole conditions as wel…
A Flux-Scaling Scenario for High-Scale Moduli Stabilization in String Theory
We investigate the possibility of enhancement of effective axion decay constant in well controlled constructions in string theory. To this end, we study the dynamics of axions arising in the compactifications of type IIA string theory on Calabi-Yau orientifolds with background fluxes (with non-perturbative effects included to ensure stabilization of all moduli). In this setup, we attempt to obtain large effective axion decay constant in two different ways: by searching for a direction in field space in which the potential is sufficiently flat and by arriving at a very explicit stringy embeddin…
We compute the full classical 4d scalar potential of type IIA Calabi-Yau orientifolds in the presence of fluxes and D6-branes. We show that it can be written as a bilinear form $V = Z^{AB} ρ_Aρ_B$, where the $ρ_A$ are in one-to-one correspondence with the 4-form fluxes of the 4d effective theory. The $ρ_A$ only depend on the internal fluxes, the axions and the topological data of the compactification, and are fully determined by the Freed-Witten anomalies of branes that appear as 4d string defects. The quadratic form $Z^{AB}$ only depends on the saxionic partners of these axions. In general, t…
We consider the most general AdS$_3$ solutions of type IIB supergravity admitting a dynamical SU$(3)$ structure and preserving $\mathcal{N}=(0,2)$ supersymmetry. The analysis is broken into three distinct classes depending on whether the dynamical SU$(3)$ structure degenerates to a strict SU$(3)$ structure. The first class we consider allows for a holomorphically varying axio-dilaton consistent with the presence of $(p,q)$ 7-branes in addition to D3-branes and $(p,q)$ 5-branes. In the remaining two classes the axio-dilaton may vary but does not do so holomorphically. The second class of soluti…
We present a novel framework for obtaining large hierarchies in axion decay constants as well as trans-Planckian field excursions, with no need for tuning or a large number of fields. We consider a model with two or more CFTs with a common cutoff, that are linked by a gauged diagonal symmetry. This construction is dual to the geometry of a warped space with two or more throats glued at a common brane, allowing for calculability. Many applications of our setup are possible, such as ultra-light axions, natural inflation, and relaxion models.
We investigate the role of gauge and gravitational instantons in the context of the Swampland program. Our focus is on the global symmetry breaking they induce, especially in the presence of fermions. We first recall and make more precise the description of the dilute instanton gas through a 3-form gauge theory. In this language, the familiar suppression of instanton effects by light fermions can be understood as the decoupling of the 3-form. Even if all fermions remain massive, such decoupling may occur on the basis of an explicitly unbroken but anomalous global symmetry in the fermionic sect…
