The difference in stellar structure above and below spectral type ~M4 is expected to be a very important one, connected directly or indirectly to a variety of observational phenomena in cool stars---such as rotation, activity, magnetic field generation and topology, timescales for evolution of these, and even the basic mass-radius relationship. In this Cool Stars XVI Splinter Session, we aimed to use the M4 transition as an opportunity for discussion about the interiors of low-mass stars and the mechanisms which determine their fundamental properties. By the conclusion of the session, several key points were elucidated. Although M dwarfs exhibit significant changes across the fully convective boundary, this "M4 transition" is not observationally sharp or discrete. Instead, the properties of M dwarfs (i.e. radius, effective temperature, rotation, activity lifetime, magnetic field strength and topology) show smooth changes across M3--M6 spectral types. In addition, a wide range of stellar masses share similar spectral types around the fully convective transition. There appears to be a second transition at M6--M8 spectral types, below which there exists a clear dichotomy of magnetic field topologies. Finally, we used the information and ideas presented in the session to construct a framework for how the structure of an M dwarf star, born with specific mass and chemical composition, responds to the presence of its magnetic field, itself driven by a feedback process that links the star's rotation, interior structure, and field topology.
The coronal activity-rotation relationship is considered to be a proxy for the underlying stellar dynamo responsible for magnetic activity in solar and late-type stars. While this has been studied in considerable detail for partly-convective stars that are believed to operate an interface dynamo, it is poorly unconstrained in fully-convective stars that lack the necessary shear layer between radiative core and the convective envelope. We present new X-ray observations of 19 slowly-rotating fully-convective stars with rotation periods from the MEarth Project. We use these to calculate X-ray lum…
In solar-type stars (with radiative cores and convective envelopes), the magnetic field powers star spots, flares and other solar phenomena, as well as chromospheric and coronal emission at ultraviolet to X-ray wavelengths. The dynamo responsible for generating the field depends on the shearing of internal magnetic fields by differential rotation. The shearing has long been thought to take place in a boundary layer known as the tachocline between the radiative core and the convective envelope. Fully convective stars do not have a tachocline and their dynamo mechanism is expected to be very dif…
The recent discovery of an Earth-like exoplanet around Proxima Centauri has shined a spot light on slowly rotating fully convective M-stars. When such stars rotate rapidly (period $\lesssim 20$ days), they are known to generate very high levels of activity that is powered by a magnetic field much stronger than the solar magnetic field. Recent theoretical efforts are beginning to understand the dynamo process that generates such strong magnetic fields. However, the observational and theoretical landscape remains relatively uncharted for fully convective M-stars that rotate slowly. Here we prese…
Many fully convective stars exhibit a wide variety of surface magnetism, including starspots and chromospheric activity. The manner by which bundles of magnetic field traverse portions of the convection zone to emerge at the stellar surface is not especially well understood. In the Solar context, some insight into this process has been gleaned by regarding the magnetism as consisting partly of idealized thin flux tubes (TFT). Here, we present the results of a large set of TFT simulations in a rotating spherical domain of convective flows representative of a 0.3 solar-mass, main-sequence star. …
Context. Long-term chromospheric activity in slow-rotating fully-convective stars has been scarcely explored. Ross 128 (Gl 447) is a slow-rotator and inactive dM4 star which has been extensively observed. It hosts the fourth closest extrasolar planet. Aims. Ross 128 is an ideal target to test dynamo theories in slow-rotating low-mass star. Methods. To characterize the magnetic activity of Ross 128 we study the SK indexes derived from CASLEO, HARPS, FEROS, UVES and XSHOOTER spectra. Using the Generalized Lomb-Scargle and CLEAN periodograms, we analyze the whole SK time-series obtained between 2…

We investigate stellar magnetic activity from the theoretical point of view, by using stellar evolution models to calculate theoretical convective turnover times ($τ_{\rm c}$) and Rossby numbers (${\rm Ro}$) for pre-main-sequence and main-sequence stars. The problem is that the canonical place where $τ_{\rm c}$ is usually determined (half a mixing length above the base of the convective zone) fails for fully convective stars and there is no agreement on this in the literature. Our calculations were performed with the ATON stellar evolution code. We concentrated our analysis on fully and partia…
M dwarfs are low-mass main-sequence stars, the most numerous type of stars in the solar neighbourhood, which are known to have significant magnetic activity. The aim of this work is to explore the dynamo solutions and magnetic fields of fully convective M dwarfs with varying magnetic Prandtl numbers ${\rm Pr_M}$, and a rotation period (${\rm P_{rot}}$) of 43 days. ${\rm Pr_M}$ is known to play an important role in the dynamo action; dynamos for low-$\rm Pr_M$ and large-$\rm Pr_M$ have very different properties. We performed three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamical (MHD) numerical simulations wi…
Main sequence, fully-convective M dwarfs in eclipsing binaries are observed to be larger than stellar evolutionary models predict by as much as $10-15\%$. A proposed explanation for this discrepancy involves effects from strong magnetic fields, induced by rapid-rotation via the dynamo process. Although, a handful of single, slowly-rotating M dwarfs with radius measurements from interferometry also appear to be larger than models predict, suggesting that rotation or binarity specifically may not be the sole cause of the discrepancy. We test whether single, rapidly rotating, fully convective sta…
(abridged) Context: Main-sequence late-type stars with masses less than $0.35 M_\odot$ are fully convective. Aims: The goal is to study convection, differential rotation, and dynamos as functions of rotation in fully convective stars. Methods: Three-dimensional hydrodynamic and magnetohydrodynamic numerical simulations with a star-in-a-box model, where a spherical star is immersed inside of a Cartesian cube, are used. The model corresponds to a $0.2M_\odot$ M5 dwarf. Rotation periods ($P_{\rm rot}$) between 4.3 and 430 days are explored. Results: The slowly rotating model with $P_{\rm rot}=430…
Evidence of surface magnetism is now observed on an increasing number of cool stars. The detailed manner by which dynamo-generated magnetic fields giving rise to starspots traverse the convection zone still remains unclear. Some insight into this flux emergence mechanism has been gained by assuming bundles of magnetic field can be represented by idealized thin flux tubes (TFTs). Weber & Browning (2016) have recently investigated how individual flux tubes might evolve in a 0.3 solar-mass M dwarf by effectively embedding TFTs in time-dependent flows representative of a fully convective star. We …
On the angular momentum evolution of fully-convective stars: rotation periods for field M-dwarfs from the MEarth transit survey
M dwarfs are the most numerous stars in our Galaxy with masses between approximately 0.5 and 0.1 solar mass. Many of them show surface activity qualitatively similar to our Sun and generate flares, high X-ray fluxes, and large-scale magnetic fields. Such activity is driven by a dynamo powered by the convective motions in their interiors. Understanding properties of stellar magnetic fields in these stars finds a broad application in astrophysics, including, e.g., theory of stellar dynamos and environment conditions around planets that may be orbiting these stars. Most stars with convective enve…
Accounting for stellar activity is a crucial component of the search for ever-smaller planets orbiting stars of all spectral types. We use Doppler imaging methods to demonstrate that starspot induced radial velocity variability can be effectively reduced for moderately rotating, fully convective stars. Using starspot distributions extrapolated from sunspot observations, we adopt typical M dwarf starspot distributions with low contrast spots to synthesise line profile distortions. The distortions are recovered using maximum entropy regularised fitting and the corresponding stellar radial veloci…
Recently, Jao et al. (2018) discovered a gap in the mid-M dwarfs main sequence revealed by the analysis of Gaia data Release 2. They suggested the feature is linked to the onset of full convection in M dwarfs. Following the announcement of this discovery, MacDonald & Gizis (2018) proposed an explanation based on standard stellar evolution models. In this paper we re-examine the explanation suggested by MacDonald & Gizis (2018). We confirm that nuclear burning and mixing process of $^3$He provide the best explanation for the observed feature. We also find that a change in the energy transport f…
Low-mass M dwarfs represent the most common outcome of star formation, but their complex emergent spectra hinder detailed studies of their composition and initial formation. The measurement of isotopic ratios is a key tool that has been used to unlock the formation of our Solar System, the Sun, and the nuclear processes within more massive stars. We observed GJ 745AB, two M dwarfs orbiting in a wide binary, with the IRTF/iSHELL spectrograph. Our spectroscopy of CO in these stars at the 4.7 micron fundamental and 2.3 micron first-overtone rovibrational bandheads reveals 12C16O, 13C16O, and 12C1…
The ultrafast-rotating ($P_\mathrm{rot}\approx0.44 d$) fully convective single M4 dwarf V374 Peg is a well-known laboratory for studying intense stellar activity in a stable magnetic topology. As an observable proxy for the stellar magnetic field, we study the stability of the light curve, and thus the spot configuration. We also measure the occurrence rate of flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs). We analyse spectroscopic observations, $BV(RI)_C$ photometry covering 5 years, and additional $R_C$ photometry that expands the temporal base over 16 years. The light curve suggests an almost rig…
Some low-mass stars appear to have larger radii than predicted by standard 1D structure models; prior work has suggested that inefficient convective heat transport, due to rotation and/or magnetism, may ultimately be responsible. We examine this issue using 1D stellar models constructed using Modules for Experiments in Stellar Astrophysics (MESA). First, we consider standard models that do not explicitly include rotational/magnetic effects, with convective inhibition modeled by decreasing a depth-independent mixing length theory (MLT) parameter $α_{\text{MLT}}$ (following Cox et al. 1981; Chab…
M dwarfs remain active over longer timescales than their Sunlike counterparts, with potentially devastating implications for the atmospheres of their planets. However, the age at which fully-convective M dwarfs transition from active and rapidly rotating to quiescent and slowly rotating is poorly understood, as these stars remain rapidly rotating in the oldest clusters that are near enough for a large sample of low-mass M dwarfs to be studied. To constrain the spindown of these low-mass stars, we measure photometric rotation periods for field M dwarfs in wide binary systems, primarily using TE…
The intermediate period gap, discovered by Kepler, is an observed dearth of stellar rotation periods in the temperature-period diagram at $\sim$ 20 days for G dwarfs and up to $\sim$ 30 days for early-M dwarfs. However, because Kepler mainly targeted solar-like stars, there is a lack of measured periods for M dwarfs, especially those at the fully convective limit. Therefore it is unclear if the intermediate period gap exists for mid- to late-M dwarfs. Here, we present a period catalog containing 40,553 rotation periods (9,535 periods $>$ 10 days), measured using the Zwicky Transient Facility (…
White-light flares are magnetically driven localized brightenings on the surfaces of stars. Their temporal, spectral, and statistical properties present a treasury of physical information about stellar magnetic fields. The spatial distributions of magnetic spots and associated flaring regions help constrain dynamo theories. Moreover, flares are thought to crucially affect the habitability of exoplanets that orbit these stars. Measuring the location of flares on stars other than the Sun is challenging due to the lack of spatial resolution. Here we present four fully convective stars observed wi…
We have discovered a new, near-equal mass, eclipsing M dwarf binary from the Next Generation Transit Survey. This system is only one of 3 field age ($>$ 1 Gyr), late M dwarf eclipsing binaries known, and has a period of 1.74774 days, similar to that of CM~Dra and KOI126. Modelling of the eclipses and radial velocities shows that the component masses are $M_{\rm pri}$=0.17391$^{+0.00153}_{0.00099}$ $M_{\odot}$, $M_{\rm sec}$=0.17418$^{+0.00193}_{-0.00059}$ $M_{\odot}$; radii are $R_{\rm pri}$=0.2045$^{+0.0038}_{-0.0058}$ $R_{\odot}$, $R_{\rm sec}$=0.2168$^{+0.0047}_{-0.0048}$ $R_{\odot}$. The e…
We report the detection of stellar eclipses in the LP 661-13 system. We present the discovery and characterization of this system, including high resolution spectroscopic radial velocities and a photometric solution spanning two observing seasons. LP 661-13 is a low mass binary system with an orbital period of $4.7043512^{+0.0000013}_{-0.0000010}$ days at a distance of $24.9 \pm 1.3$ parsecs. LP 661-13A is a $0.30795 \pm 0.00084$ $M_\odot$ star while LP 661-13B is a $0.19400 \pm 0.00034$ $M_\odot$ star. The radius of each component is $0.3226 \pm 0.0033$ $R_\odot$ and $0.2174 \pm 0.0023$ $R_\o…
The nearby M dwarf binary GJ65AB, also known as BL Cet and UV Cet, is a unique benchmark for investigation of dynamo-driven activity of low-mass stars. Magnetic activity of GJ65 was repeatedly assessed by indirect means, such as studies of flares, photometric variability, X-ray and radio emission. Here we present a direct analysis of large-scale and local surface magnetic fields in both components. Interpreting high-resolution circular polarisation spectra (sensitive to a large-scale field geometry) we uncovered a remarkable difference of the global stellar field topologies. Despite nearly ide…
We present the discovery and characterisation of an eclipsing binary identified by the Next Generation Transit Survey in the $\sim$115 Myr old Blanco 1 open cluster. NGTS J0002-29 comprises three M dwarfs: a short-period binary and a companion in a wider orbit. This system is the first well-characterised, low-mass eclipsing binary in Blanco 1. With a low mass ratio, a tertiary companion and binary components that straddle the fully convective boundary, it is an important benchmark system, and one of only two well-characterised, low-mass eclipsing binaries at this age. We simultaneously model l…
The Gaia M-dwarf gap is a recently discovered feature in the colour-magnitude diagram that shows a deficiency of low-mass and low-metallicity stars at the lower end of the main sequence. We aim at performing theoretical stellar modelling at low metallicities using a fine mass step and a fine time step, looking specifically for the transition of models from partially to fully convective, since the convective kissing instability that occurs at this transition is believed to be the cause of the gap. Stellar evolution models with metallicities of Z = 0.01, Z = 0.001 and Z = 0.0001 are performed us…
Stellar rotation periods are valuable both for constraining models of angular momentum loss and for under- standing how magnetic features impact inferences of exoplanet parameters. Building on our previous work in the northern hemisphere, we have used long-term, ground-based photometric monitoring from the MEarth Observatory to measure 234 rotation periods for nearby, southern hemisphere M dwarfs. Notable examples include the exoplanet hosts GJ 1132, LHS 1140, and Proxima Centauri. We find excellent agreement between our data and K2 photometry for the overlapping subset. Amongst the sample of …
The Gaia M-dwarf gap is a significant under-density of stars observed near $M_G = 10.2$ in a color-magnitude diagram for stars within 200 pc of the Sun. It has been proposed that the gap is the manifestation of structural instabilities within stellar interiors due to non-equilibrium $^{3}$He fusion prior to some stars becoming fully convective. To test this hypothesis, we use Dartmouth stellar evolution models, MARCS model atmospheres, and simple stellar population synthesis to create synthetic $M_G$-($G_{\rm BP} - G_{\rm RP})$ color-magnitude diagrams. We confirm that the proposed $^{3}$He in…
