We present a stochastic approach for ion transport at the mesoscopic level. The description takes into account the self-consistent electric field generated by the fixed and mobile charges as well as the discrete nature of these latter. As an application we study the noise in the ion transport process, including the effect of the displacement current generated by the fluctuating electric field. The fluctuation theorem is shown to hold for the electric current with and without the displacement current.
This paper reports a relation between ionic conductivity and electric current fluctuations. The relation was derived using statistical analysis and entropy approach. The relation can be used to calculate ionic conductivity.
We derive a relationship for the electric field dependent ionic conductivity in terms of fluctuations of time integrated microscopic variables. We demonstrate this formalism with molecular dynamics simulations of solutions of differing ionic strength with implicit solvent conditions and molten salts. These calculations are aided by a novel nonequilibrium statistical reweighting scheme that allows for the conductivity to be computed as a continuous function of the applied field. In strong electrolytes, we find the fluctuations of the ionic current are Gaussian and subsequently the conductivity …
A kinetic approach based on a modified chain of BBGKI equations for nonequilibrium particle distribution functions was used to describe the ion transfer processes in the ionic solution -- porous medium system. A generalized kinetic equation of the revised Enskog--Vlasov--Landau theory for the nonequilibrium ion distribution function in the model of charged solid spheres is obtained, taking into account attractive short-range interactions for the ionic solution -- porous medium system.
We derive a universal bound on generalized currents in Langevin systems in terms of the mean-square fluctuations of the current and the total entropy production. This bound generalizes a relation previously found by Barato et al. to arbitrary times and transient states. Using the bound, we define a new efficiency for stochastic transport, which measures how close a given system comes to saturating the bound. The existence of such a bounded efficiency implies that stochastic transport is unavoidably accompanied by a fluctuations and dissipation, which cannot be reduced arbitrarily. We apply the…
A gap in understanding the link between continuum theories of ion transport in ionic liquids and the underlying microscopic dynamics has hindered the development of frameworks for transport phenomena in these concentrated electrolytes. Here, we construct a continuum theory for ion transport in ionic liquids by coarse graining a simple exclusion process of interacting particles on a lattice. The resulting dynamical equations can be written as a gradient flow with a mobility matrix that vanishes at high densities. This form of the mobility matrix gives rise to a charging behaviour that is differ…
The ability of semipermeable membranes to selectively impede the transport of undesirable solutes is key to many applications. Yet, obtaining a systematic understanding of how membrane structure affects selectivity remains elusive due to the insufficient spatiotemporal resolution of existing experimental techniques, and the inaccessibility of relevant solute transport timescales to conventional molecular simulations. Here, we utilize jumpy forward-flux sampling to probe the transport of sodium and chloride ions through a graphitic membrane with sub-nm pores. We find chlorides to traverse the p…
We report the ion transport mechanisms in succinonitrile (SN) loaded solid polymer electrolytes containing polyethylene oxide (PEO) and dissolved lithium bis(trifluoromethane)sulphonamide (LiTFSI) salt using molecular dynamics simulations. We investigated the effect of temperature and loading of SN on ion transport and relaxation phenomenon in PEO-LiTFSI electrolytes. It is observed that SN increases the ionic diffusivities in PEO-based solid polymer electrolytes and makes them suitable for battery applications. Interestingly, the diffusion coefficient of TFSI ions is an order of magnitude hig…
The fluctuation theorem is a representative theorem in non-equilibrium statistical physics actively studied in the 1990's. Relating to entropy production in non-equilibrium states, the theorem has been used to estimate the driving power of motor proteins from fluctuation in their motion. In this review, usage of the fluctuation theorem in experiments on motor proteins is illustrated for biologists, especially those who study mechanobiology, in which force measurement is a central issue. We first introduce the application of the fluctuation theorem in measuring the rotary torque of the rotary m…
Input and output current fluctuations in stationary cross-transport systems with two kinds of currents are investigated. In Saryal {\it et al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. 127, 190603 (2021)], upper bounds on input and output current fluctuations are proven in the linear response regime and suggested the validity beyond the linear response regime. We examine these bounds beyond the linear response regime and find that these bounds are violated in general nonequilibrium stationary conditions. We show two examples to demonstrate the violation. Through these examples, we argue that no upper bound on input …
In this chapter, we illustrate how a trapped ion system can be used for the experimental study of quantum thermodynamics, in particular, quantum fluctuation of work. As technology of nano/micro scale develops, it becomes critical to understand thermodynamics at the quantum mechanical level. The trapped ion system is a representative physical platform to experimentally demonstrate quantum phenomena with excellent control and precision. We provide a basic introduction of the trapped ion system and present the theoretical framework for the experimental study of quantum thermodynamics. Then we bri…
