The recent measurement of negative higher-order Kerr effect (HOKE) terms in gases has given rise to a controversial debate, fed by its impact on short laser pulse propagation. By comparing the experimentally measured yield of the third and fifth harmonics, with both an analytical and a full comprehensive numerical propagation model, we confirm the absolute and relative values of the reported HOKE indices.
Based on numerical simulations, we show that higher-order nonlinear indices (up to $n_8$ and $n_{10}$, respectively) of air and argon have a dominant contribution to both focusing and defocusing in the self-guiding of ultrashort laser pulses over most of the spectrum. Plasma generation and filamentation are therefore decoupled. As a consequence, ultraviolet wavelength may not be the optimal wavelengths for applications requiring to maximize ionization.
I analyze a scheme that is capable of producing large Kerr nonlinearities on cavity-atom polaritons in a cavity QED system consisting of multiple three-level atoms confined in a cavity mode. A weak control laser coupled to the atoms from free space induces destructive quantum interference in the polariton excitation of the coupled cavity-atom system and creates large Kerr nonlinearities on the intra-cavity light field. The scheme can be used for optical switching or cross-phase modulation of the cavity-atom polariton at ultra-low light levels, which may be useful for applications in quantum st…
We show the formation of slow optical solitons in the asymmetric coupled double quantum-wells (CQW) via a two-photon Raman resonance. With the consideration of real parameters in AlGaAs-based CQW, we indicate the possibility to have cancellation of the linear absorption and giant Kerr nonlinearities. With the controllable balance between dispersion and nonlinear effects in these solid-state based devices, this work may provide a practical platform for nonlinear optical signal processing.
The possibility of generation and propagation of ultraslow bright optical solitons in asymmetric three-coupled quantum well systems is studied in this paper. These bright solitons owe their existence to Kerr and quintic nonlinearities which arise due to a probe pulse and two controlling laser beams. We also demonstrate numerically that these solitons are stable. The modulation instability of a continuous or quasi-continuous wave probe beam has been also investigated and the role of quintic nonlinearity in suppressing this instability addressed.
We review measurements in the literature regarding Kerr nonlinearity of lithium niobate. Of particular interest is to separate the value of the electronic Kerr nonlinearity and the strength of the delayed Raman nonlinearity. The spectral shape of the Raman response in LN is discussed and we restrict ourselves to the case where the pump is polarized along the optical axis. This configuration is important for so-called type 0 noncritical interaction, which is used in QPM devices and in recent supercontinuum generation and few-cycle soliton compression experiments.
Nonlinear optical effects including stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) and four-wave mixing (FWM) play an important role in microwave photonics, optical frequency combs, and quantum photonics. Harnessing SBS and FWM in a low-loss and versatile integrated platform would open the path to building large-scale Brillouin/Kerr-based photonic integrated circuits. In this letter, we investigate the Brillouin and Kerr properties of a low-index (n=1.513 @ 1550 nm) silicon oxynitride (SiON) platform. We observed, for the first time, backward SBS in SiON waveguides with a Brillouin gain coefficient of …
Bulk materials possessing a relative electric permittivity $\varepsilon$ close to zero exhibit giant Kerr nonlinearities. However, harnessing this response in guided-wave geometries is not straightforward, due to the extreme and counter-intuitive properties of epsilon-near-zero materials. Here we investigate, through rigorous calculations of the Kerr nonlinear coefficient, how the remarkable nonlinear properties of such materials can be exploited in several different types of structures, including bulk films, plasmonic nanowires, and metal nanoapertures. We find the largest Kerr nonlinear resp…
We theoretically and numerically study the influence of both instantaneous and Raman-delayed Kerr nonlinearities as well as a long-wavelength pump in the terahertz (THz) emissions produced by two-color femtosecond filaments in air. Although the Raman-delayed nonlinearity induced by air molecules weakens THz generation, four-wave mixing is found to impact the THz spectra accumulated upon propagation via self-, cross-phase modulations and self-steepening. Besides, using the local current theory, we show that the scaling of laser-to-THz conversion efficiency with the fundamental laser wavelength …
A fundamental and open question is whether cross-Kerr nonlinearities can be used to construct a controlled-phase (CPHASE) gate. Here we propose a gate constructed from a discrete set of atom-mediated cross-Kerr interaction sites with counter-propagating photons. We show that the average gate fidelity $F$ between a CPHASE and our proposed gate increases as the number of interaction sites increases and the spectral width of the photon decreases, e.g. with 12 sites we find $F > 99\%$.
We analyse Raman-induced self-frequency shift in two-component solitons supported by both quadratic and cubic nonlinearities. Treating Raman terms as a perturbation, we derive expressions for soliton velocity and frequency shifts of the fundamental frequency and second harmonic soliton components. We find these predictions compare well with simulations of soliton propagation. We also show that Raman shift can cause two-component solitons to approach the boundary of their own existence and subsequently trigger soliton instabilities. In some cases these instabilities are accompanied by an almost…
The self-Kerr interaction is an optical nonlinearity that produces a phase shift proportional to the square of the number of photons in the field. At present, many proposals use nonlinearities to generate photon-photon interactions. For propagating fields these interactions result in undesirable features such as spectral correlation between the photons. Here, we engineer a discrete network composed of cross-Kerr interaction regions to simulate a self-Kerr medium. The medium has effective long-range interactions implemented in a physically local way. We compute the one- and two-photon S matrice…
We consider the Jaynes-Cummings model describing the interaction of a Cooper pair box (CPB) and a nanoresonator (NR) in the presence of a Kerr medium and losses The evolution of the entropy of both subsystems and the CPB population inversion were calculated numerically. It is found that these properties increase when the NR frequency is time-dependent, even in the presence of losses; the effect is very sensitive to detuning and disappears in the resonant regime. The roles played by the losses affecting the CPB and the NR are also compared.
We investigate the optical Kerr nonlinearities of an ensemble of cold Rydberg atoms under the condition of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). By using an approach beyond mean-field theory, we show that the system possesses not only enhanced third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility, but also giant fifth-order nonlinear optical susceptibility, which has a cubic dependence on atomic density. Our results demonstrate that both the third-order and the fifth-order nonlinear optical susceptibilities consist of two parts, contributed respectively by photon-atom interaction and Rydberg-…
The analysis of negative birefringence optically induced in major air components (Loriot et al., [1, 2]) is revisited in light of the recently reported plasma grating-induced phase-shift effect predicted for strong field pump-probe experiments (Wahlstrand and Milchberg, [3]). The nonlinear birefrin- gence induced by a short and intense laser pulse in argon is measured by femtosecond time-resolved polarimetry. The experiments are performed with degenerate colors, where the pump and probe beam share the same spectrum, or with two different colors and non-overlapping spectra. The in- terpretation…
According to a recent experiment, the instantaneous electronic Kerr effect in air exhibits a strong intensity dependence, the nonlinear refractive index switching sign and crossing over from a self-focusing to a de-focusing nonlinearity. A subsequent theoretical work has demonstrated that this has paradigm-changing consequences for the understanding of filamentation in air, so it is important to subject the idea of higher-order nonlinearities to stringent tests. Here we use numerical modeling to propose an experiment capable of discriminating between the standard and the new intensity-dependen…
We show that higher-order nonlinear indices ($n_4$, $n_6$, $n_8$, $n_{10}$) provide the main defocusing contribution to self-channeling of ultrashort laser pulses in air and Argon at 800 nm, in contrast with the previously accepted mechanism of filamentation where plasma was considered as the dominant defocusing process. Their consideration allows to reproduce experimentally observed intensities and plasma densities in self-guided filaments.
We present a detailed study of soliton compression of ultra-short pulses based on phase-mismatched second-harmonic generation (\textit{i.e.}, the cascaded quadratic nonlinearity) in bulk quadratic nonlinear media. The single-cycle propagation equations in the temporal domain including higher-order nonlinear terms are presented. The balance between the quadratic (SHG) and the cubic (Kerr) nonlinearity plays a crucial role: we define an effective soliton number -- related to the difference between the SHG and the Kerr soliton numbers -- and show that it has to be larger than unity for successful…
We report the soliton frequency comb generation in microring optical parametric oscillators operating in the down-conversion regime and with the simultaneous presence of the $χ^{(2)}$ and Kerr nonlinearities. The combs are studied considering a typical geometry of a bulk LiNbO$_3$ toroidal resonator with the normal group velocity dispersion spanning an interval between the pump and the down-converted signal. We have identified critical power signaling a transition between the relatively low pump power predominantly $χ^{(2)}$ combs and the high pump power ones shaped by the competition between …
Femtosecond laser pulses interacting with LiNbO3 has been widely applied in intense terahertz generation, excitation and imaging of phonon polaritons and modulating light. It is of great importance to study the nonlinearities induced by femtosecond laser pulses in LiNbO3. Here, we demonstrate that both Kerr nonlinearity and Kerr-like nonlinearity induced by terahertz wave occur under the interaction between laser pulses and LiNbO3 using optical pump-probe techniques. We show that the contribution of Kerr-like nonlinearity to pump-probe spectra varies with the interaction length because of the …
Management of solitons in media with competing quadratic and cubic nonlinearities is investigated. Two schemes, using rapid modulations of a mismatch parameter, and of the Kerr nonlinearity parameter are studied. For both cases, the averaged in time wave equations are derived. In the case of mismatch management, the region of the parameters where stabilization is possible is found. In the case of Kerr nonlinearity management, it is shown that the effective $χ^{(2)}$ nonlinearity depends on the intensity imbalance between fundamental (FH) and second (SH) harmonics. Predictions obtained from the…
Propagation of ultrashort light pulses in disordered multilayers is studied by using numerical simulations in time domain. We consider cases of instantaneous and noninstantaneous Kerr nonlinearities of the structure materials. The competitive nature of disorder and nonlinearity is revealed on the long and short timescales. We also pay special attention to the effect of pulse self-trapping in the photonic crystal with relaxing nonlinearity and show the dependence of this effect on the level of disorder. We believe that the results reported here will be useful not only in the field of optics but…

Nonlinear propagation experiments in GaAs photonic crystal waveguides (PCW) were performed, which exhibit a large enhancement of third order nonlinearities, due to light propagation in a slow mode regime, such as two-photon absorption (TPA), optical Kerr effect and refractive index changes due to TPA generated free-carriers. A theoretical model has been established that shows very good quantitative agreement with experimental data and demonstrates the important role that group velocity plays. These observations give a strong insight into the use of PCWs for optical switching devices.
In the recent publication [Phys. Rev. B 87, 235319 (2013)], the conventional photon blockade(CPB) was studied for the low frequency mode in a second-order nonlinear system. In this paper, we will study the CPB for the high frequency mode in a second-order nonlinear system with the Kerr nonlinearity filling in the low-frequency cavity. By solving the master equation and calculating the zero-delay-time second order correlation function $g^{(2)}(0)$, strong photon antibunching can be obtained in the high frequency cavity. The optimal condition for strong antibunching is found by analyticcal culat…
We study the nonlinear propagation of diffraction-free, space-time wave packets, also called time-diffracting beams because their spatiotemporal structure reproduces diffraction in time. We report on the spontaneous formation of propagation-invariant, spatiotemporally compressed pulsed beams carrying finite power from exciting time-diffracting Gaussian beams in media with cubic Kerr nonlinearity at powers below the critical power for collapse, and also with other collapse-arresting nonlinearities above the critical power. Their attraction property makes the experimental observation of the self…
We developed a frequency-domain model describing optical frequency-comb generation in optical resonators with second- and third-order nonlinearities. Compared with time-domain models, our model in principle allows one to express the cavity dispersion accurately, avoiding the dispersion being truncated beyond a certain order. Moreover, the frequency-domain model can readily include frequency dependence of system parameters, such as the linear absorption and the cavity coupling ratio. To demonstrate the validity of our model, we numerically simulated quadratic combs in a singly resonant second-h…
Spectral singularities are ubiquitous with PT-symmetry leading to infinite transmission and reflection coefficients. Such infinities imply the divergence of the fields in the medium thereby breaking the very assumption of the linearity of the medium used to obtain such singularities. We identify saturable nonlinearity retaining contributions from all orders of the field to limit the infinite growth and regularize the spectral singularity. We present explicit numerical results to demonstrate regularization. The all order nonlinear PT-symmetric device is shown to exhibit very effective isolation…
We describea theoretical analysis of the nonlinear dynamics of third-harmonic generation ($ω\to3ω$) via Kerr ($\chithree$) nonlinearities in a resonant cavity with resonances at both $ω$ and $3ω$. Such a doubly resonant cavity greatly reduces the required power for efficient harmonic generation, by a factor of $\sim V/Q^2$ where $V$ is the modal volume and $Q$ is the lifetime, and can even exhibit 100% harmonic conversion efficiency at a critical input power. However, we show that it also exhibits a rich variety of nonlinear dynamics, such as multistable solutions and long-period limit cycles.…
We experimentally demonstrate a negative Kerr nonlinearity for quasi-undoped graphene. Hereto, we introduce the method of chirped-pulse-pumped self-phase modulation and apply it to graphene-covered silicon waveguides at telecom wavelengths. The extracted Kerr-nonlinear index for graphene equals n2,gr = -10^(-13) m^2/W. Whereas the sign of n2,gr turns out to be negative in contrast to what has been assumed so far, its magnitude is in correspondence with that observed in earlier experiments. Graphene's negative Kerr nonlinearity strongly impacts how graphene should be exploited for enhancing the…
We theoretically study the nature of parametrically driven dissipative Kerr soliton (PD-DKS) in a doubly resonant degenerate micro-optical parametric oscillator (DR-DμOPO) with the cooperation of \c{hi}(2) and \c{hi}(3) nonlinearities. Lifting the assumption of close-to-zero group velocity mismatch (GVM) that requires extensive dispersion engineering, we show that there is a threshold GVM above which single PD-DKS in DR-DμOPO can be generated deterministically. We find that the exact PD-DKS generation dynamics can be divided into two distinctive regimes depending on the phase matching conditio…
We introduce a complete analytical and numerical study of the modulational instability process in a system governed by a canonical nonlinear Schrödinger equation involving local, arbitrary nonlinear responses to the applied field. In particular, our theory accounts for the recently proposed higher-order Kerr nonlinearities, providing very simple analytical criteria for the identification of multiple regimes of stability and instability of plane-wave solutions in such systems. Moreover, we discuss a new parametric regime in the higher-order Kerr response which allows for the observation of seve…
We investigate the impact of a finite response time of Kerr nonlinearities over the onset of spontaneous oscillations (self-pulsing) occurring in a nanocavity. The complete characterization of the underlying Hopf bifurcation in the full parameter space allows us to show the existence of a critical value of the response time and to envisage different regimes of competition with bistability. The transition from a stable oscillatory state to chaos is found to occur only in cavities which are detuned far off-resonance, which turns out to be mutually exclusive with the region where the cavity can o…
We show that an optical system involving competing higher-order Kerr nonlinearities can support the existence of ultrasolitons, namely extremely localized modes that only appear above a certain threshold for the central intensity. Such new solitary waves can be produced for powers below the usual collapse threshold, but they can also coexist with ordinary, lower-intensity solitons. We derive analytical conditions for the occurrence of multistability and analyze the dynamics of the different kinds of fundamental eigenmodes that can be excited in these nonlinear systems. We also discuss the poss…
We investigate the formation and control of stationary optical patterns in a cold Rydberg atomic gas via double electromagnetically induced transparency. We show that, through the modulational instability of plane-wave state of a laser field with two polarization components, the system undergoes a spontaneous symmetry breaking and hence the emergence of plentiful self-organized spatial optical structures, which can be manipulated by the ratio between the cross- and self-Kerr nonlinearities, the nonlocality degree of the Kerr nonlinearities, and the populations initially prepared in the two ato…
We present a method to measure quadratic Terahertz optical nonlinearities in Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy. We use a rotating linear polarizer (a polarizing chopper) to modulate the amplitude of the incident THz pulse train. We use a phase-sensitive lock-in detection at the fundamental and the second harmonic of the modulation frequency to separate the materials' responses that are linear and quadratic in Terahertz electric field. We demonstrate this method by measuring the quadratic Terahertz Kerr effect in the presence of the much stronger linear electro-optic effect in the (110) GaP cr…
In this Letter, we show theoretically that the nonlinear photoionisation process of a noble gas inside a hollow-core photonic crystal fibre can be exploited in obtaining broadband supercontinuum generation via pumping close to the mid-infrared regime. The interplay between the Kerr and photoionisation nonlinearities is strongly enhanced in this regime. Photoionisation continuously modifies the medium dispersion, in which the refractive index starts to significantly decrease and approach the epsilon-near-zero regime. Subsequently, the self-phase modulation induced by the Kerr effect is boosted …
We study the interplay between coherent light-matter interactions and non-resonant pulse propagation effects when ultra-short pulses propagate in room-temperature quantum-dot (QD) semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs). The signatures observed on a pulse envelope after propagating in a transparent SOA, when coherent Rabi-oscillations are absent, highlight the contribution of two-photon absorption (TPA), and its accompanying Kerr-like effect, as well as of linear dispersion, to the modification of the pulse complex electric field profile. These effects are incorporated into our previously deve…
Optical nonlinearities are known to provide a coherent coupling between the amplitude and phase of the light, which can result in the formation of periodic waveforms. Lasers that emit such waveforms are referred to as optical frequency combs. Here we show that Bloch gain - a nonclassical phenomenon that was first predicted in the 1930s - plays an essential role in comb formation in quantum cascade lasers (QCLs). We develop a self-consistent theoretical model that considers all aspects of comb formation: bandstructure, electron transport, and cavity dynamics. It reveals that Bloch gain gives ri…
We propose a mean-field model to describe second harmonic generation in a resonator made of a material with zincblende crystalline structure. The model is obtained through an averaging of the propagation equations and boundary conditions. It considers the phase-mismatched terms, which act as an effective Kerr effect. We analyze the impact of the different terms on the steady state solutions, highlighting the competition between nonlinearities.
Microresonator Kerr frequency combs, which rely on third-order nonlinearity ($χ^{(3)}$), are of great interest for a wide range of applications including optical clocks, pulse shaping, spectroscopy, telecommunications, light detection and ranging (LiDAR) and quantum information processing. Many of these applications require further spectral and temporal control of the generated frequency comb signal, which is typically accomplished using additional photonic elements with strong second-order nonlinearity ($χ^{(2)}$). To date these functionalities have largely been implemented as discrete off-ch…
Beams that experience third-harmonic generation (THG) also experience Kerr effects. With Kerr effects, beams do not take simple Gaussian shapes, but exhibit nonlinear dynamics. These nonlinear dynamics have an effect on the THG accumulated by focusing and then diverging beams. We formulate a self-consistent and complete set of nonlinear Schroedinger equations for a pair of coupled beams -- a fundamental and its third-harmonic. Numerical simulations show that the Kerr nonlinearities allow some third-harmonic to propagate to the far-field even for zero or negative phase-mismatch. This is because…
We report on the comparative experimental investigation on third and fifth harmonic generation (THG and FHG) in atomic and molecular gases driven by mid-infrared ultrafast laser pulses at a wavelength of ~1500 nm. We observe that the conversion efficiencies of both the THG and FHG processes saturate at similar peak intensities close to ~1.5\times1014 W/cm2 for argon, nitrogen, and air, whose ionization potentials are close to each other. Near the saturation intensity, the ratio of yields of the FHG and THG reaches ~10-1 for all the gases. Our results show that high-order Kerr effects do exist,…
