The quasi one-dimensional compound BaCu2Si2O7 demonstrates numerous spin-reorientation transitions both for a magnetic field applied along the easy axis of magnetization, and for a magnetic field applied perpendicular to it. The magnetic phase diagram for all three principal orientations is obtained by magnetization and specific heat measurements. Values of all critical fields and low-temperature values of magnetization jumps are determined for all transitions.
The magnetic properties of CaCo$_{2}$As$_{2}$ single crystal was systematically studied by using dc magnetization and magnetic torque measurements. A paramagnetic to antiferromagnetic transition occurs at $T_N$ = 74 K with Co spins being aligned parallel to the c axis. For $H \parallel c$, a field-induced spin-flop transition was observed below $T_N$ and a magnetic transition from antiferromagnetic to paramagnetic was inferred from the detailed analysis of magnetization and magnetic torque. Finally, we summarize the magnetic phase diagram of CaCo$_{2}$As$_{2}$ based on our results in the \emph…
Ferroelectric properties in magnetic fields of varying magnitude and direction have been investigated for a triangular-lattice helimagnet CuFe1-xGaxO2 (x=0.035). The magnetoelectric phase diagrams were deduced for magnetic fields along [001], [110], and [1-10] direction, and the in-plane magnetic field was found to induce the rearrangement of six possible multiferroic domains. Upon every 60-degree rotation of in-plane magnetic field around the c-axis, unique 120-degree flop of electric polarization occurs as a result of the switch of helical magnetic q-vector. The chirality of spin helix is al…
In the quasi-one-dimensional cuprate PrBa$_2$Cu$_4$O$_8$, the Pr cations order antiferromagnetically at 17 K in zero field. Through a combination of magnetic susceptibility, torque magnetometry, specific heat and interchain transport measurements, the anisotropic temperature-magnetic field phase diagram associated with this ordering has been mapped out. A low-temperature spin-flop transition in the Pr sub-lattice is found to occur at the same magnetic field strength and orientation as a dimensional crossover in the ground state of the metallic CuO chains. This coincidence suggests that the spi…
Magnetoelectric phase diagrams of the perovskite manganites, Eu1-xYxMnO3 and Gd1-xTbxMnO3, are theoretically studied. We first construct a microscopic model, and then analyze the model using the Monte-Carlo method. We reproduce the diagrams, which contain two different multiferroic states, i.e., the ab-plane spin cycloid with electric polarization P//a and the bc-plane spin cycloid with P//c. We reveal that their competition originates from a conflict between the single-ion anisotropy and the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction, which is controlled by the second-neighbor spin exchanges enhanced b…
Experiments in the antiferromagnetic phase of a quasi 2D $S=1/2$ quasi-square lattice antiferromagnet Cu(pz)2(ClO4)2 reveal a biaxial type of the anisotropy, instead of the easy-plane one, considered before. The weak in-plane anisotropy, found by means of electron spin resonance spectroscopy and magnetization measurements, is about an order of magnitude weaker, than the off-plane anisotropy. The weak in-plane anisotropy results in a spin-flop phase transition for the magnetic field aligned along easy axis, and, thereby, in a bicritical point on the phase diagram. A remarkable feature of the we…
We have carried out high magnetic field studies of single-crystalline Li$_2$MnO$_3$, a honeycomb lattice antiferromagnet. Its magnetic phase diagram was mapped out using magnetization measurements at applied fields up to 35 T. Our results show that it undergoes two successive meta-magnetic transitions around 9 T fields applied perpendicular to the ab-plane (along the c*-axis). These phase transitions are completely absent in the magnetization measured with field applied along the ab-plane. In order to understand this magnetic phase diagram, we developed a mean-field model starting from the cor…
Magnetization processes of the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic $XXZ$ model in two and three spatial dimensions are studied using quantum Monte Carlo method based on stochastic series expansions. Recently developed operator-loop algorithm enables us to show a clear evidence of the first-order phase transition in the presence of an external magnetic field. Phase diagrams of closely related systems, hard core bosons with nearest-neighbor repulsions, are also discussed focusing on possibilities of phase-separated and supersolid phases.
The magnetic, thermal and transport properties as well as electronic band structure of MnPtSi are reported. MnPtSi is a metal that undergoes a ferromagnetic transition at $T_{\mathrm{C}}=340$(1) K and a spin-reorientation transition at $T_{\mathrm{N}}=326$(1) K to an antiferromagnetic phase. First-principles electronic structure calculations indicate a not-fully polarized spin state of Mn in a $d^5$ electron configuration with $J=S=3$/2, in agreement with the saturation magnetization of 3~$μ_{\mathrm{B}}$ in the ordered state and the observed paramagnetic effective moment. A sizeable anomalous…
Static and dynamic magnetic properties of P\={3}1$m$-phase MnSb$_2$O$_6$ have been studied by means of muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR), high-frequency electron spin resonance (HF-ESR), specific heat, and magnetisation studies in magnetic fields up to 25\,T. The data imply onset of long-range antiferromagnetic order at $T_N$ =~8~K and a spin-flop-like transition at $B_{SF}\approx 0.7 - 1$~T. Below $T_N$, muon asymmetry exhibits well-defined oscillations indicating a narrow distribution of the local fields. A competing antiferromagnetic phase appearing below $T_2$ =~5.3~K is evidenced by a step in …
High-field magnetization of the spin-$1/2$ antiferromagnet $α$-Cu$_2$V$_2$O$_7$ was measured in pulsed magnetic fields of up to 56 T in order to study its magnetic phase diagram. When the field was applied along the easy axis (the $a$-axis), two distinct transitions were observed at $H_{c1}=6.5$~T and $H_{c2}=18.0$~T. The former is a spin-flop transition typical for a collinear antiferromagnet and the latter is believed to be a spin-flip transition of canted moments. The canted moments, which are induced by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions, anti-align for $H_{c1}<H<H_{c2}$ due to the ani…
We present the results of the magnetization and dielectric constant measurements on untwinned single crystal samples of the frustrated S=1/2 chain cuprate LiCu_2O_2. Novel magnetic phase transitions were observed. A spin flop transition of the spiral spin plane was observed for the field orientations H||a,b. The second magnetic transition was observed at H~15 T for all three principal field directions. This high field magnetic phase is discussed as a collinear spin-modulated phase which is expected for an S=1/2 nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic and next-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic chain sy…
We investigate the phase diagram of an anisotropic ferrimagnet spin-(1/2, 1) in the presence of a non-commuting (transverse) magnetic field. We find a magnetization plateau for the isotropic case while there is no plateau for the anisotropic ferrimagnet. The magnetization plateau can appear only when the Hamiltonian has the U(1) symmetry in the presence of the magnetic field. The anisotropic model is driven by the magnetic field from the Néel phase for low fields to the spin-flop phase for intermediate fields and then to the paramagnetic phase for high fields. We find the quantum critical poin…
In this paper we compute the mean field phase diagram of a doped antiferromagnet, in a magnetic field and with anisotropic exchange. We show that at zero temperature there is a metamagnetic transition from the antiferromagnetic configuration along the z direction to a spin-flop state. In the spin flop phase the system prefers a commensurate magnetic order, at low doping, whereas at larger doping the incommensurate phase is favorable. Contrary to the pure Heisenberg case, the spin flop region does not span an infinite area in the ('Delta',h) plane, where 'Delta' is the exchange anisotropy and h…
Biquadratic {\it antisymmetric} exchange terms of the form $ - [C_{ij} e^α_{ij}({\bf s}_i\times{\bf s}_j)_z]^2$, where ${\bf e}_{ij}$ is the unit vector connecting sites $i$ and $j$ and $α= x,y$, due partially to magnetoelectric coupling effects, are shown to be responsible for the spin-flop helical phase in CuFeO$_2$ at low magnetic field and temperature. Usual biquadratic {\it symmetric} exchange, likely due to magnetoelastic coupling, is found to support the stability of axial magnetic states at higher fields in this nearly-Heisenberg like stacked triangular antiferromagnet. A model Hamilto…
The (H,T)-phase diagram of the multiferroic perovskite TbMnO$_3$ was studied by high-resolution thermal expansion $α(T)$ and magnetostriction $ΔL(H)/L$ measurements. Below $T_{N}\simeq 42$ K, TbMnO$_3$ shows antiferromagnetic order, which changes at $T_{FE}\simeq 28$ K where simultaneously a spontaneous polarization $P||c$ develops. Sufficiently high magnetic fields applied along $a$ or $b$ induce a polarization flop to $P||a$. We find that all of these transitions are strongly coupled to the lattice parameters. Thus, our data allow for a precise determination of the phase boundaries and also …
The competition between spin-orbit coupling, bandwidth ($W$) and electron-electron interaction ($U$) makes iridates highly susceptible to small external perturbations, which can trigger the onset of novel types of electronic and magnetic states. Here we employ {\em first principles} calculations based on density functional theory and on the constrained random phase approximation to study how dimensionality and strain affect the strength of $U$ and $W$ in (SrIrO$_3$)$_m$/(SrTiO$_3$) superlattices. The result is a phase diagram explaining two different types of controllable magnetic and electron…
We have investigated the ground state phase diagram of the 1D AF spin-1/2 Heisenberg model with the staggered Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction in an external uniform magnetic field $H$. We have used the exact diagonalization technique. In the absence of the uniform magnetic field (H=0), we have shown that the DM interaction induces a staggered chiral phase. The staggered chiral phase remains stable even in the presence of the uniform magnetic field. We have identified that the ground state phase diagram consists of four Luttinger liquid, staggered chiral, spin-flop, and ferromagnetic pha…

We present a comprehensive single crystal neutron diffraction investigation of the $\rm Mn_{1-x}Co_{x}WO_4$ with $0.02\leq x \leq0.30$. At lower concentration $x \leq 0.05$, the system is quickly driven into the multiferroic phase with spin structure forming an elliptical spiral order similar to the parent compound. The reduction of electric polarization is ascribed to the tilting of the spiral plane. For $x\sim 0.075$, the magnetic structure undergoes a spin flop transition that is characterized by a sudden rotation of the spin helix envelope into the $ac$ plane. This spin structure persists …
We have studied the zero temperature phase diagram of XYZ model in the presence of transverse magnetic field. We show that small anisotropy (0 =< Delta <1) is not relevant to change the universality class. The phase diagram consists of two antiferromagnetic ordering and a paramagnetic phases. We have obtained the critical exponents, fixed points and running of coupling constants by implementing the standard quantum renormalization group. The continuous phase transition from antiferromagnetic (spin-flop) phase to a paramagnetic one is in the universality class of Ising model in transverse field…
The low-temperature electronic state of the layered organic charge-transfer salt $κ$-(BETS)$_2$FeCl$_4$ was probed by interlayer electrical resistance measurements under magnetic field. Both above and below $T_{\mathrm{N}}=0.47\,$K, the temperature of antiferromagnetic ordering of $3d$-electron spins of Fe$^{3+}$ localized in the insulating anion layers, a non-saturating linear $R(T)$ dependence has been observed. A weak superconducting signal has been detected in the antiferromagnetic state, at temperatures $\leq 0.2\,$K. Despite the very high crystal quality, only a tiny fraction of the samp…
We study the magnetic behaviors of a spin-1/2 quantum compass chain (QCC) in a transverse magnetic field, by means of the analytical spinless fermion approach and numerical Lanczos method. In the absence of the magnetic field, the phase diagram is divided into four gapped regions. To determine what happens by applying a transverse magnetic field, using the spinless fermion approach, critical fields are obtained as a function of exchanges. Our analytical results show, the field-induced effects depend on in which one of the four regions the system is. In two regions of the phase diagram, the Isi…
Motivated by impurity-induced magnetic ordering phenomena in spin-gap materials like TlCuCl3, we develop a mean-field theory for strongly disordered antiferromagnets, designed to capture the broad distribution of coupling constants in the effective model for the impurity degrees of freedom. Based on our results, we argue that in the presence of random magnetic couplings the conventional first-order spin-flop transition of an anisotropic antiferromagnet is split into two transitions at low temperatures, associated with separate order parameters along and perpendicular to the field axis. We demo…
We report a high magnetic field study up to 55 T of the nearly optimally doped iron-pnictide superconductor Ca$_{10}$(Pt$_{3}$As$_{8}$) ((Fe$_{1-x}$Pt$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$)$_{5}$ (x=0.078(6)) with a Tc 10 K using magnetic torque, tunnel diode oscillator technique and transport measurements. We determine the superconducting phase diagram, revealing an anisotropy of the irreversibility field up to a factor of 10 near Tc and signatures of multiband superconductivity. Unexpectedly, we find a spin-flop like anomaly in magnetic torque at 22 T, when the magnetic field is applied perpendicular to the …
We study the zero-temperature phase diagram and the low-energy excitations of a mixed-spin ($S_1>S_2$) $J_1-J_2$ Heisenberg model defined on a square lattice by using a spin-wave analysis, the coupled cluster method, and the Lanczos exact-diagonalization technique. As a function of the frustration parameter $J_2/J_1$ ($ >0$), the phase diagram exhibits a quantized ferrimagnetic phase, a canted spin phase, and a mixed-spin collinear phase. The presented results point towards a strong disordering effect of the frustration and quantum spin fluctuations in the vicinity of the classical spin-flop t…
The influence of uniaxial single-ion anisotropy -DSz^2 on the magnetic and thermal properties of Heisenberg antiferromagnets (AFMs) is investigated. The uniaxial anisotropy is treated exactly and the Heisenberg interactions are treated within unified molecular field theory (MFT) [Phys. Rev. B 91, 064427 (1915)], where thermodynamic variables are expressed in terms of directly measurable parameters. The properties of collinear AFMs with ordering along the z axis (D > 0) in applied fields Hz = 0 are calculated versus D and temperature T. The high-field average magnetization per spin muz(Hz,D,T) …
CeAu2Ge2 single crystals (tetragonal ThCr2Si2 structure) have been grown in Au-Ge flux (AGF) as well as in Sn flux (SF). X-ray powder-diffraction and EDX measurements indicate that in the latter case Sn atoms from the flux are incorporated in the samples, leading to a decrease of the lattice constants by ~ 0.3% compared to AGF samples. For both types of samples, a strong anisotropy of the magnetization M for the magnetic field B parallel and perpendicular to the c direction is observed with M||/M^{\bot} ~ 6 - 7 in low fields just above 10 K. This anisotropy is preserved to high fields and temp…
We perform a comparative magnetic study on two series of rare-earth (RE) based double perovskite iridates RE2BIrO6 (RE=Pr,Nd,Sm-Gd;B=Zn,Mg), which show Mott insulating state with tunable charge energy gap from ~330 meV to ~560 meV by changing RE cations. For nonmagnetic RE=Eu cations, Eu2MgIrO6 shows antiferromagnetic (AFM) order and field-induced spin-flop transitions below Néel temperature (TN) in comparison with the ferromagnetic (FM)-like behaviors of Eu2ZnIrO6 at low temperatures. For magnetic-moment-containing RE ions, Gd2BIrO6 show contrasting magnetic behaviors with FM-like transition …

Magnetic properties and magnetic structure of the Ba$_{2}$Mn(PO$_{4}$)$_{2}$ antiferromagnet featuring frustrated zigzag chains of $S=\frac{5}{2}$ Mn$^{2+}$ ions are reported based on neutron diffraction, density-functional band-structure calculations, as well as temperature- and field-dependent measurements of the magnetization and specific heat. A magnetic transition at $T_N\simeq 5$\,K marks the onset of the antiferromagnetic order with the propagation vector ${\mathbf k} = (\frac12\, 0\, \frac12)$ and ordered moment of $4.33\pm0.08~μ_B$/Mn$^{2+}$ at 1.5\,K, pointing along the $c$ direction…
We report the anomalous breakdown in the scaling of the microscopic magnetic susceptibility, as measured via the ${}^{31}$P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) shift $K$, with the bulk magnetic susceptibility $χ$ in the paramagnetic state of Mn$_2$P$_2$S$_6$. This anomaly occurs near $T_\mathrm{max} \sim 117$ K the maximum in $χ(T)$ and is therefore associated with the onset of quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) magnetic correlations. The spin-lattice relaxation rate divided by temperature $(T_1T)^{-1}$ in Mn$_2$P$_2$S$_6$ exhibits broad peak-like behavior as a function of temperature, qualitativel…
The entire magnetic phase diagram of the quasi two dimensional (2D) magnet on a distorted triangular lattice KFe(MoO4)2 is outlined by means of magnetization, specific heat, and neutron diffraction measurements. It is found that the spin network breaks down into two almost independent magnetic subsystems. One subsystem is a collinear antiferromagnet that shows a simple spin-flop behavior in applied fields. The other is a helimagnet that instead goes through a series of exotic commensurate-incommensurate phase transformations. In the various phases one observes either true 3D order or quasi-2D …
The ground state of the multiple-spin exchange model with up to the six-spin exchange interactions on a triangular lattice in the magnetic field is investigated within the mean-field approximation. By comparing the phase diagrams of systems with and without the five- and six-spin interactions, we find that the five- and six-spin interactions expand the ferromagnetic phase. In contrast, the antiferromagnetic-like phases are contracted. A phase with a 1/2 plateau is also contracted by the five- and six-spin interactions. In addition to the results that have not yet been reported for systems with…
The phase diagrams of the frustrated classical spin model with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction on the Shastry-Sutherland (S-S) lattice are studied by means of Monte Carlo simulation. For ferromagnetic next-nearest-neighboring (J2) interactions, the introduced exchange frustration enhances the effect of the DM interaction, which enlarges the magnetic field-range with the skyrmion lattice phase and increases the skyrmion density. For antiferromagnetic J2 interactions, the so-called 2q phase (two-sublattice skyrmion crystal) and the spin-flop phase are observed in the simulated phase diagr…
The complete magnetic and multiferroic phase diagram of Mn$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$WO$_4$ single crystals is investigated by means of magnetic, heat capacity, and polarization experiments. We show that the ferroelectric polarization $\overrightarrow{P}$ in the multiferroic state abruptly changes its direction twice upon increasing Co content, x. At x$_{c1}$=0.075, $\overrightarrow{P}$ rotates from the $b-$axis into the $a-c$ plane and at x$_{c2}$=0.15 it flips back to the $b-$axis. The origin of the multiple polarization flops is identified as an effect of the Co anisotropy on the orientation and shape…
The ground state magnetization process of the S=1 antiferromagnetic chain with the easy-axis single-ion anisotropy described by negative $D$ is investigated. It is numerically found that a phase transition between two different gapless phases occurs at an intermediate magnetic field between the starting and saturation points of the magnetization for $-1.49<D<-0.35$. The transition is similar to the spin flopping, but it is second-order and not accompanied with any significant anomalous behaviors in the magnetization curve. We also present the phase diagrams in the m-D and H-D planes which reve…
Quantum phase transitions in the one-dimensional extended quantum compass model in transverse field are studied by using the Jordan-Wigner transformation. This model is always gapful except at the critical surfaces where the energy gap disappears. We obtain the analytic expressions of all critical fields which drive quantum phase transitions. This model shows a rich phase diagram which includes spin-flop, strip antiferromagnetic and saturate ferromagnetic phases in addition to the phase with anti parallel ordering of spin $y$ component on odd bonds. However we study the universality and scalin…
We study the triangular $t$-$J$ model with multiple spin exchange interactions using exact diagonalization of small clusters, as a model of monolayer liquid $^3$He. A phase where the energy spectrum suggest the behaviors of spin-charge separation is realized in the doped-Mott region due to the competition between ferromagnetic two-spin and antiferromagnetic four-spin exchange interactions. This behavior gives an interpretation of the double peaked heat capacity recently observed in monolayer liquid $^3$He adsorbed on a graphite.
The possibility of multiple phase diagram in the novel superconductor Na_{x}CoO_{2}yH_{2}O is analyzed on the basis of the multi-orbital Hubbard model including the atomic spin-orbit coupling. We have shown that the spin triplet pairing state is stable in this model. The p-wave (f-wave) state is stabilized when the Hund's rule coupling is large (small). In the precedent paper, we have determined the direction of d-vector at T=Tc and H=0 within the linearized Dyson-Gorkov equation. In this paper, the pairing state below Tc and under the magnetic field is determined within the weak coupling appr…
The rich phase diagram of the two dimensional electron gas (2DEG) at the \STO/\LAO interface is probed using Hall and longitudinal resistivity. Thanks to a special bridge design we are able to tune through the superconducting transition temperature T$_c$ and to mute superconductivity by either adding or removing carriers in a gate bias range of a few volts. Hall signal measurements pinpoint the onset of population of a second mobile band right at the carrier concentration where maximum superconducting T$_c$ and critical field H$_c$ occur. These results emphasize the advantages of our design, w…
