We study the triangular $t$-$J$ model with multiple spin exchange interactions using exact diagonalization of small clusters, as a model of monolayer liquid $^3$He. A phase where the energy spectrum suggest the behaviors of spin-charge separation is realized in the doped-Mott region due to the competition between ferromagnetic two-spin and antiferromagnetic four-spin exchange interactions. This behavior gives an interpretation of the double peaked heat capacity recently observed in monolayer liquid $^3$He adsorbed on a graphite.
A heterojunction Mott field effect transistor (FET) is proposed that consists of an epitaxial channel material that exhibits an electron-correlation-induced Mott metal-to-insulator transition. The Mott material is remotely (modulation) doped with a degenerately doped conventional band insulator. An applied voltage modulates the electron transfer from the doped band insulator to the Mott material and produces transistor action by inducing an insulator-to-metal transition. Materials parameters from rare-earth nickelates and SrTiO3 are used to assess the potential of the "modulation-doped Mott FE…
The organic system, $κ$-[(BEDT-TTF)$_{1-x}$(BEDT-STF)$_x$]$_2$Cu$_2$(CN)$_3$, showing the Mott transition between a nonmagnetic Mott insulating (NMI) state and a Fermi liquid (FL), is systematically studied by calorimetric measurements. An increase of the electronic heat capacity at the transition from the NMI state to the FL state which keeps the triangular dimer lattice demonstrates that the charge sector lost in the Mott insulating state is recovered in the FL state. We observed that the remaining low-energy spin excitations in the Mott insulating state show unique temperature dependence, a…
Heterointerfaces in complex oxide systems open new arenas in which to test models of strongly correlated material, explore the role of dimensionality in metal-insulator-transitions (MITs) and small polaron formation. Close to the quantum critical point Mott MITs depend on band filling controlled by random disordered substitutional doping. Delta-doped Mott insulators are potentially free of random disorder and introduce a new arena in which to explore the effect of electron correlations and dimensionality. Epitaxial films of the prototypical Mott insulator GdTiO3 are delta-doped by substituting…
The variational cluster approximation is used to study the isotropic triangular-lattice Hubbard model at half filling, taking into account the nearest-neighbor ($t_1$) and next-nearest-neighbor ($t_2$) hopping parameters for magnetic frustrations. We determine the ground-state phase diagram of the model. In the strong correlation regime, the 120$^\circ$ Néel and stripe ordered phases appear, and a nonmagnetic insulating phase emerges in between. In the intermediate correlation regime, the nonmagnetic insulating phase expands to a wider parameter region, which goes into a paramagnetic metallic …
The combination of bandstructure theory in the local density approximation with dynamical mean field theory was recently successfully applied to V$_2$O$_3$ -- a material which undergoes the f amous Mott-Hubbard metal-insulator transition upon Cr doping. The aim of this sh ort paper is to emphasize two aspects of our recent results: (i) the filling of the Mott-Hubbard gap with increasing temperature, and (ii) the peculiarities of the Mott-Hubbard transition in this system which is not characterized by a diver gence of the effective mass for the $a_{1g}$-orbital.
We have investigated possible spin and charge ordered states in 3d transition-metal oxides with small or negative charge-transfer energy, which can be regarded as self-doped Mott insulators, using Hartree-Fock calculations on d-p-type lattice models. It was found that an antiferromagnetic state with charge ordering in oxygen 2p orbitals is favored for relatively large charge-transfer energy and may be relevant for PrNiO$_3$ and NdNiO$_3$. On the other hand, an antiferromagnetic state with charge ordering in transition-metal 3$d$ orbitals tends to be stable for highly negative charge-transfer e…
We study the effect of carrier doping to the Mott insulator on the Penrose tiling, aiming at clarifying the interplay between quasiperiodicity and strong electron correlations. We numerically solve the Hubbard model on the Penrose-tiling structure within a real-space dynamical mean-field theory, which can deal with a singular self-energy necessary to describe the Mott insulator and spatial inhomogeneity. We find that the strong correlation effect produces a charge distribution unreachable by a static mean-field approximation. In a small doping region, the spectrum shows a site-dependent gap ju…
We investigate the Hubbard model on the anisotropic triangular lattice by means of the cellular dynamical mean field theory. The phase diagram determined in the Hubbard interaction versus temperature plane shows novel reentrant behavior in the Mott transition due to the competition between Fermi-liquid formation and magnetic correlations under geometrical frustration. We demonstrate that the reentrant behavior is characteristic of the Mott transition with intermediate geometrical frustration and indeed consistent with recent experimental results of organic materials.
We obtain the non-collinear ground states of a triangular-lattice antiferromagnet with exchange interactions up to third nearest neighbors as a function of the single-ion anisotropy $D$. At a critical value of $D$, the collinear $\uudd $ phase transforms into a complex non-collinear phase with odd-order harmonics of the fundamental ordering wavevector $\vQ $. The observed elastic peaks at $2π\vx -\vQ $ in both Al- and Ga- doped CuFeO$_2$ are explained by a "scalene" distortion of the triangular lattice produced by the repulsion of neighboring oxygen atoms.
This paper has been withdrawn by the authors because the results were incorrect due to the use of an impurity solver that fails at large interaction strength and above half-filling. This led, first, to the development of a new impurity solver (arXiv:1202.5814 or Phys.Rev. B 86, 085133 (2012)) and, second, to a complete revision of the thermopower results with different conclusions. Therefore a new paper on thermopower was submitted (arXiv:1209.4349) and the present one withdrawn.
The spectral properties of La$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$TiO$_{3}$, a doped Mott insulator with strong Coulomb correlations, are calculated with the ab initio computational scheme LDA+DMFT(QMC). It starts from the non-interacting electronic band structure as calculated by the local density approximation (LDA), and introduces the missing correlations by the dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT), using numerically exact quantum Monte-Carlo (QMC) techniques to solve the resulting self-consistent multi-band single-impurity problem. The results of the LDA+DMFT(QMC) approach for the photoemission spectra of La$_{1…
Doped divalent hexaborides such as $Sr_{1-x}La_xB_6$ exhibit high \tc ferromagnetism. We isolate a degenerate pair of $2p$-orbitals of boron with two valence electrons, invoke electron correlation and Hund coupling, to suggest that the undoped state is better viewed as a spin-1 Mott insulator; it is predicted to be a type of 3d Haldane gap phase with a spin gap $\sim 0.1 eV$, much smaller than the charge gap of $ > 1.0 eV$ seen in ARPES. The experimentally seen high \tc `ferromagnetism' is argued to be a complex magnetic order in disguise - either a canted 6-sublattice AFM ($\approx 120^0$) or…
The physics of doped Mott insulators remains controversial after decades of active research, hindered by the interplay among possible competing orders and fluctuations. It is thus highly desired to distinguish the intrinsic characters of the Mott-metal crossover from those of other origins. We investigate the evolution of electronic structure and dynamics of the hole-doped J=1/2 Mott insulator Sr2IrO4. The effective hole doping is achieved by replacing Ir with Rh atoms, with the chemical potential immediately jumping to or near the top of the lower Hubbard band. The doped iridates exhibit mult…
We study evolution of metals from Mott insulators in the carrier-doped 2D Hubbard model using a cluster extension of the dynamical mean-field theory. While the conventional metal is simply characterized by the Fermi surface (pole of the Green function G), interference of the zero surfaces of G with the pole surfaces becomes crucial in the doped Mott insulators. Mutually interfering pole and zero surfaces are dramatically transferred over the Mott gap, when lightly doped holes synergetically loosen the doublon-holon binding. The heart of the Mott physics such as the pseudogap, hole pockets, Fer…
We introduce the concept that there are two generic classes of Mott insulators in nature. They are distinguished by their responses to weak doping. Doped charges form cluster (i.e. distribute inhomogeneously) in type I Mott insulators while distribute homogeneously in type II Mott insulators. We present our opinion on the role inhomogeneity plays in the cuprates.
Quantum spin liquid states, in which spins are quantum-mechanically delocalized in direction, have been so far studied for charge-localized Mott insulators arising from strong repulsive interaction. Recently, however, it was found that the doped Mott insulator with a triangular lattice, $κ$-(ET)$_4$Hg$_{2.89}$Br$_8$, exhibits both spin-liquid-like magnetism and metallic electrical conduction. Thus, it is now possible to experimentally explore how the spin liquidity affects the electrical conduction, an issue that has received a great deal of theoretical attention. Here, with a newly developed …
Motivated by the commonplace observation of Mott insulators away from integer filling, we construct a simple thermodynamic argument for phase separation in first-order doping-driven Mott transitions. We show how to compute the critical dopings required to drive the Mott transition using electronic structure calculations for the titanate family of perovskites, finding good agreement with experiment. The theory predicts the transition is percolative and should exhibit Coulomb frustration.
We use a nonequilibrium implementation of extended dynamical mean field theory to study the effect of dynamical screening in photo-excited Mott insulators. The insertion of doublons and holes adds low-energy screening modes and leads to a reduction of the Mott gap. The coupling to low-energy bosonic modes further- more opens new relaxation channels and significantly speeds up the thermalization process. We also consider the effect of the energy distribution of the doped carriers on the screening.
We have investigated the Mott transition in a quasi-two-dimensional Mott insulator EtMe$_3$P[Pd(dmit)$_2$]$_2$ with a spin-frustrated triangular lattice in hydrostatic pressure and magnetic field. In the pressure-temperature ($P$-$T$) phase diagram, a valence bond solid phase is found to neighbor the superconductor and metal phases at low temperatures. The profile of the phase diagram is common to those of Mott insulators with antiferromagnetic order. In contrast to the antiferromagnetic Mott insulators, the resistivity in the metallic phase exhibits anomalous temperature dependence, $ρ= ρ_0 +…
The spin dynamics of electron doped Mott insulators on a triangular lattice is studied based on the $t-J$ model. It is found that the particularly universal behaviors of integrated dynamical spin structure factor seen in the doped Mott insulators on a square lattice, are absent in the doped Mott insulators on a triangular lattice, indicating the presence of the normal state gap. As a result, the spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/$T_{1}$ divided by $T$ reduces with decreasing temperatures in the temperature region above 0.2$J$$\approx$50K, then follows a Curie-Weiss-like behavior at the temperatur…
We study the doping driven Mott metal-insulator transition (MIT) in the periodic Anderson model set in the Mott-Hubbard regime. A striking asymmetry for electron or hole driven transitions is found. The electron doped MIT at larger U is similar to the one found in the single band Hubbard model, with a first order character due to coexistence of solutions. The hole doped MIT, in contrast, is second order and can be described as the delocalization of Zhang-Rice singlets.
We derived a simple metal-insulator criterion in analytical form for the doped Mott-Hubbard materials. Its readings closely related to the orbital and spin nature of the ground states of the unit cell. The available criterion readings (metal or insulator) in the paramagnetic phase points to the possibility of the insulator state of doped materials with the forbidden first removal electron states. According to its physical meaning the result is similar to Wilsons criterion in the itinerant electron systems. An application of the criterion to the high-Tc cuprates discussed.
We study electric transport near the Mott metal-insulator transition in a triangular-lattice Hubbard model at half filling. We calculate optical conductivity $σ(ω)$ based on a cellular dynamical mean field theory including vertex corrections inside the cluster. Near the Mott critical end point, a Drude analysis in the metallic region suggests that the change in the Drude weight is important rather than that in the transport scattering rate for the Mott transition. In the insulating region, there emerges an "ingap" peak in $σ(ω)$ at low $ω$ near the Mott transition, and this smoothly connects t…
Dynamical mean-field theory is employed to calculate the electronic charge reconstruction of multilayered inhomogeneous devices composed of semi-infinite metallic lead layers sandwiching barrier planes of a strongly correlated material (that can be tuned through the metal-insulator Mott transition). The main focus is on barriers that are doped Mott insulators, and how the electronic charge reconstruction can create well-defined Mott insulating regions in a device whose thickness is governed by intrinsic materials properties, and hence may be able to be reproducibly made.
The dynamical mean-field method is used to formulate a computationally tractable theory of electron-phonon interactions in systems with arbitrary local electron-electron interactions in the physically relevant adiabatic limit of phonon frequency small compared to electron bandwidth or interaction scale. As applications, the phonon contribution to the effective mass of a carrier in a lightly doped Mott insulator is determined and the phase separation boundary is discussed.

This paper presents numerical studies of the single hole tt't''J model that address the interplay between the kinetic energy of itinerant electrons and the exchange energy of local moments as of interest to doped Mott insulators. Due to this interplay, two different spin correlations coexist around a mobile vacancy. These local correlations provide an effective two-band picture that explains the two-band structure observed in various theoretical and experimental studies, the doping dependence of the momentum space anisotropic pseudogap phenomena and the asymmetry between hole and electron dope…
We propose the projected BCS wave function as the ground state for the doped Mott insulator SrCu2(BO3)2 on the Shastry-Sutherland lattice. At half filling this wave function yields the exact ground state. Adding mobile charge carriers, we find a strong asymmetry between electron and hole doping. Upon electron doping an unusual metal with strong valence bond correlations forms. Hole doped systems are d-wave RVB superconductors in which superconductivity is strongly enhanced by the emergence of inhomogeneous plaquette bond order.
Microscopical model of a doped fulleride electronic subsystem taking into account the triple orbital degeneracy of energy states is considered within the configurational-operator approach. Using the Green function method the energy spectrum of the model at integer band filling $n=1$ is calculated, which case corresponds to $AC_{60}$ compounds. Possible correlation-driven metal-insulator transition in the model is discussed.
We show how a lightly doped Mott insulator has hugely enhanced electronic thermal transport at low temperature. It displays universal behavior independent of the interaction strength when the carriers can be treated as nondegenerate fermions and a nonuniversal "crossover" region where the Lorenz number grows to large values, while still maintaining a large thermoelectric figure-of-merit. The electron dynamics are described by the Falicov-Kimball model which is solved for arbitrary large on-site correlation with a dynamical mean-field theory algorithm on a Bethe lattice. We show how these resul…
We employ dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) with a Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) atomic solver to investigate the finite temperature Mott transition in the Hubbard model with the nearest neighbor hopping on a triangular lattice at half-filling. We estimate the value of the critical interaction to be $U_c=12.0 \pm 0.5$ in units of the hopping amplitude $t$ through the evolution of the magnetic moment, spectral function, internal energy and specific heat as the interaction $U$ and temperature $T$ are varied. This work also presents a comparison between DMFT and finite size determinant Quantum Monte…
1T-TaS$_2$ is a charge-density-wave (CDW) compound with a Mott-insulating ground state. The metallic state obtained by doping, substitution or pulsed charge injection is characterized by an emergent CDW domain wall network, while single domain walls can be found in the pristine Mott state. Here we study whether and how the single walls become metallic. Tunneling spectroscopy reveals partial suppression of the Mott gap and the presence of in-gap states strongly localized at the domain-wall sites. Using the real-space dynamical mean field theory description of the strongly correlated quantum-par…
We construct the low energy theory of a doped Mott insulator, such as the high-temperature superconductors, by explicitly integrating over the degrees of freedom far away from the chemical potential. For either hole or electron doping, a charge 2e bosonic field emerges at low energy. The charge 2e boson mediates dynamical spectral weight transfer across the Mott gap and creates a new charge e excitation by binding a hole. The result is a bifurcation of the electron dispersion below the chemical potential as observed recently in angle-resolved photoemission on Pb-doped Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+δ} (Pb…
Trial wavefunctions, constructed explicitly from the unique 2-dimensional Mott insulating state with antiferromagnetic order, are proposed to describe the low-energy states of a Mott insulator slightly doped with holes or electrons. With the state behaving like charged quasi-particles with well-defined momenta, a rigid band is observed. These states have much less pairing correlations than previously studied ones. Small Fermi patches obtained are consistent with recent experiments on high Tc cuprates doped lightly with holes or electrons. States showing the incoherent and spin-bag behaviors ar…
Based on dynamical cluster approximation (DCA) quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we study the interaction-driven Mott metal-insulator transition (MIT) in the half-filled Hubbard model on the anisotropic two-dimensional triangular lattice, where the degree of frustration is varied between the unfrustrated case and the fully frustrated, isotropic triangular lattice. Upon increasing the DCA cluster size, we analyze the evolution of the MIT phase boundary as a function of frustration in the phase diagram spanned by the interaction strength and temperature, and provide a quantitative description of …
We investigate the magnetic properties and Mott transition in the Hubbard model for weakly coupled chains on the anisotropic triangular lattice. Taking into account 120$^\circ$ Néel, and collinear orderings, the magnetic phase diagram is studied at zero temperature and half-filling by the variational cluster approximation. We found that when the on-site Coulomb repulsion $U$ is relatively large, nonmagnetic insulator, which is a candidate of the spin liquid state, is realized for wide range of the interchain hopping from quasi two-dimensional to almost one-dimensional regime. When the intercha…
We study Mott transition in the two-dimensional Hubbard model on an anisotropic triangular lattice. We use the Lanczos exact diagonalization of finite-size clusters up to eighteen sites, and calculate Drude weight, charge gap, double occupancy and spin structure factor. We average these physical quantities over twisted boundary conditions in order to reduce finite-size effects. We find a signature of the Mott transition in the dependence of the Drude weight and/or charge gap on the system size. We also examine the possibility of antiferromagnetic order from the spin structure factor. Combining…
In order to demonstrate that atomic Fermi gas is a good experimental reality in studying unsolved problems in frustrated interacting-spin systems, we numerically examine the Mott core state emerged by loading two-component atomic Fermi gases on triangular optical lattices. Consequently, we find that plateau like structures are observable in the Mott core polarization as a function of the population imbalance. These plateau states are caused by a flexibility that the surrounding metallic region absorbs the excess imbalance to keep the plateau states inside the Mott core. We also find spin patte…
Bad-Metal (BM) behavior featuring linear temperature dependence of the resistivity extending to well above the Mott-Ioffe-Regel (MIR) limit is often viewed as one of the key unresolved signatures of strong correlation. Here we associate the BM behavior with the Mott quantum criticality by examining a fully frustrated Hubbard model where all long-range magnetic orders are suppressed, and the Mott problem can be rigorously solved through Dynamical Mean-Field Theory. We show that for the doped Mott insulator regime, the coexistence dome and the associated first-order Mott metal-insulator transiti…
The spectral weight evolution of the low-dimensional Mott insulator TiOCl upon alkali-metal dosing has been studied by photoelectron spectroscopy. We observe a spectral weight transfer between the lower Hubbard band and an additional peak upon electron-doping, in line with quantitative expectations in the atomic limit for changing the number of singly and doubly occupied sites. This observation is an unconditional hallmark of correlated bands and has not been reported before. In contrast, the absence of a metallic quasiparticle peak can be traced back to a simple one-particle effect.
The emergence of superconductivity in doped Mott insulators has been debated for decades. In this paper, we report the theoretical discovery of a time-reversal symmetry breaking superconducting ground state in the doped Mott insulator (described by the well known t-J model) on honeycomb lattice, based on a recently developed variational method: the Grassmann tensor product state approach. As a benchmark, we use exact diagonalization and density-matrix renormalization methods to check our results on small clusters. We find systematic consistency for the ground-state energy as well as other phys…
$^{1}$H NMR and static susceptibility measurements have been performed in an organic Mott insulator with nearly isotropic triangular lattice, $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_{2}$Cu$_{2}$(CN)$_{3}$, which is a model system of frustrated quantum spins. The static susceptibility is described by the spin $S$ = 1/2 antiferromagnetic triangular-lattice Heisenberg model with the exchange constant $J$ $\sim$ 250 K. Regardless of the large magnetic interactions, the $^{1}$H NMR spectra show no indication of long-range magnetic ordering down to 32 mK, which is four-orders of magnitude smaller than $J$. These results su…
We analyze the recent vortex core spectroscopy experiments in cuprate superconductor and discuss what can be learned from them about the nature of the ground state in these compounds. We argue that the data are inconsistent with the assumption of a simple metallic ground state and exhibit characteristics of a doped Mott insulator. A theory for a vortex core in such a doped Mott insulator is developed based on the U(1) gauge field slave boson model and is shown to exhibit properties qualitatively consistent with the experimental data.
We propose a novel quantum spin liquid state that can explain many of the intriguing experimental properties of the low-temperature phase of the organic spin liquid candidate materials. This state of paired fermionic spinons preserves all symmetries of the system, and it has a gapless excitation spectrum with quadratic bands that touch at momentum ~ k = 0. This quadratic band touching is protected by the symmetry of the system. Using variational Monte Carlo techniques, we show that this state has highly competitive energy in the triangular lattice Heisenberg model supplemented with a realistic…
Predictions are made for the momentum- and carrier-dependent degradation of the Mott gap upon doping in high-Tc cuprates as would be observed in Cu K-edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). The two-dimensional Hubbard model with second- and third-nearest-neighbor hopping terms has been studied by numerical exact diagonalization. Special emphasis is placed on the particle-hole asymmetry of the Mott gap excitations. We argue that the Mott gap excitations observed by RIXS are significantly influenced by the interaction between charge carriers and antiferromagnetic correlations.
We study the superconducting state of the hole-doped two-dimensional Hubbard model using Cellular Dynamical Mean Field Theory, with the Lanczos method as impurity solver. In the under-doped regime, we find a natural decomposition of the one-particle (photoemission) energy-gap into two components. The gap in the nodal regions, stemming from the anomalous self-energy, decreases with decreasing doping. The antinodal gap has an additional contribution from the normal component of the self-energy, inherited from the normal-state pseudogap, and it increases as the Mott insulating phase is approached…
We study the single hole tt't''J-model numerically to address the momentum space anisotropy found in doped Mott insulators. A simple two band picture to understand how the doped hole is screened by the spin background in states of different momenta is proposed. In this picture, the disparity between the nodal and antinodal regions, observed by experiments in the underdoped cuprate superconductors, follows from local energetic considerations and amounts to the distinction between well defined quasiparticle behavior and spin-charge separation related phenomenology.
The Mott insulating phase of the parent compounds is frequently taken as starting point for the underdoped high-$T_c$ cuprate superconductors. In particular, the pseudogap state is often considered as deriving from the Mott insulator. In this work, we systematically investigate different weakly-doped Mott insulators on the square and triangular lattice to clarify the relationship between the pseudogap and Mottness. We show that doping a two-dimensional Mott insulator does not necessarily lead to a pseudogap phase. Despite its inherent strong-coupling nature, we find that the existence or absen…
Interest in many strongly spin-orbit coupled 5d-transition metal oxide insulators stems from mapping their electronic structures to a J=1/2 Mott phase. One of the hopes is to establish their Mott parent states and explore these systems' potential of realizing novel electronic states upon carrier doping. However, once doped, little is understood regarding the role of their reduced Coulomb interaction U relative to their strongly correlated 3d-electron cousins. Here we show that, upon hole-doping a candidate J=1/2 Mott insulator, carriers remain localized within a nanoscale phase separated groun…
The charge transport of electron doped Mott insulators on a triangular lattice is investigated within the t-J model based on the partial charge-spin separation fermion-spin theory. The conductivity spectrum shows a low-energy peak and the unusual midinfrared band, while the resistivity is characterized by a crossover from the high temperature metallic-like to the low temperature insulating-like behavior, in qualitative agreement with experiments. Our results also show that the mechanism that cause this unusual charge transport is closely related with a competition between the kinetic energy an…
We study the effect of Coulomb interaction between two oppositely doped low-dimensional tJ model systems. We exactly show that, in the one-dimensional case, an arbitrarily weak interaction leads to the formation of charge neutral electron-hole pairs. We then use two different mean-field theories to address the two-dimensional case, where inter-layer excitons also form and condense. We propose that this results in new features which have no analog in single layers, such as the emergence of an insulating spin liquid phase. Our simple bilayer model might have relevance to the physics of doped Mot…
Copper oxides become superconductors rapidly upon doping with electron holes, suggesting a fundamental pairing instability. The Cooper mechanism explains normal superconductivity as an instability of a fermi-liquid state, but high-temperature superconductors derive from a Mott-insulator normal state, not a fermi liquid. We show that precocity to pair condensation with doping is a natural property of competing antiferromagnetism and d-wave superconductivity on a singly-occupied lattice, thus generalizing the Cooper instability to doped Mott insulators, with significant implications for the high…
We improve a previous theory of doped Mott insulators with duality between pairing and magnetism by a further duality transform. As the result we obtained a quantum Ginzburg-Landau theory describing the Cooper pair condensate and the dual of spin condensate. We address the superconductivity by doping a Mott insulator, which we call Mott superconductivity. Some fingerprints of such novelty in cuprates are the scaling between neutron resonance energy and superfluid density, and the induced {\it quantized} spin moment by vortices or Zn impurity (together with circulating charge supper-current to …
We report structural studies of the spin-orbit Mott insulator family K$_x$Ir$_y$O$_2$, with triangular layers of edge-sharing IrO$_6$ octahedra bonded by potassium ions. The potassium content acts as a chemical tuning parameter to control the amount of charge in the Ir-O layers. Unlike the isostructural families with Ir replaced by Co or Rh ($y=1$), which are metallic over a range of potassium compositions $x$, we instead find insulating behaviour with charge neutrality achieved via iridium vacancies, which order in a honeycomb supercell above a critical composition $x_c$. By performing densit…
We study the optical response of a strongly correlated electron system near the metal-insulator transition using a mapping to the sine-Gordon model. With semiclassical quantization, the spectral weight is distributed between a Drude peak and absorption lines due to breathers. We calculate the Drude weight, the optical gap, and the lineshape of breather absorption.
We extend previous studies on orbital-selective Mott transitions in the paramagnetic state of the half-filled degenerate two-band Hubbard model to the general doped case, using a high-precision quantum Monte Carlo dynamical mean-field theory solver. For sufficiently strong interactions, orbital-selective Mott transitions as a function of total band filling are clearly visible in the band-specific fillings, quasiparticle weights, double occupancies, and spectra. The results are contrasted with those of single-band models for similar correlation strengths.
