The Mott insulating phase of the parent compounds is frequently taken as starting point for the underdoped high-$T_c$ cuprate superconductors. In particular, the pseudogap state is often considered as deriving from the Mott insulator. In this work, we systematically investigate different weakly-doped Mott insulators on the square and triangular lattice to clarify the relationship between the pseudogap and Mottness. We show that doping a two-dimensional Mott insulator does not necessarily lead to a pseudogap phase. Despite its inherent strong-coupling nature, we find that the existence or absence of a pseudogap depends sensitively on non-interacting band parameters and identify the crucial role played by the van Hove singularities of the system. Motivated by a SU(2) gauge theory for the pseudogap state, we propose and verify numerically a simple equation that governs the evolution of characteristic features in the electronic scattering rate.
The first indication of a pseudogap in cuprates came from a sudden decrease of NMR Knight shift at a doping-dependent temperature $T^*(δ)$. Since then, experiments have found phase transitions at a lower $T^*_\text{phase}(δ)$. Using plaquette cellular dynamical mean-field for the square-lattice Hubbard model at high temperature, where the results are reliable, we show that $T^*(δ)$ shares many features of $T^*_\text{phase}(δ)$. The remarkable agreement with several experiments, including quantum critical behavior of the electronic specific heat, supports the view that the pseudogap is controll…
We present a detailed NMR study of the insulator to metal transition induced by an applied pressure $p$ in the A15 phase of Cs$_{3}$C$_{60}$. We evidence that the insulating antiferromagnetic (AF) and superconducting (SC) phases only coexist in a narrow $p$ range. At fixed $p$, in the metallic state above the SC transition $T_c$, the $^{133}$Cs and $^{13}$C NMR spin lattice relaxation data are seemingly governed by a pseudogap like feature. We prove that this feature, also seen in the $^{133}$Cs NMR shift data is rather a signature of the Mott transition, which broadens and smears out progress…
We propose a new approach to understand the origin of the pseudogap in the cuprates, in terms of bosonic entropy. The near-simultaneous softening of a large number of different $q$-bosons yields an extended range of short-range order, wherein the growth of magnetic correlations with decreasing temperature $T$ is anomalously slow. These entropic effects cause the spectral weight associated with the Van Hove singularity (VHS) to shift rapidly and nearly linearly toward half filling at higher $T$, consistent with a picture of the VHS driving the pseudogap transition at a temperature $\sim T^*$. A…
Motivated by the realization of spin-valley Hubbard on triangular moiré superlattice in ABC trilayer graphene aligned with hexagon boron nitride (hBN) and possibly also in twisted transition metal dichalcogenide homobilayers, we study possible Mott insulating phases and pseudogap metals based on symmetry constraint and parton mean field theories. First we show that Luttinger constraint allows two distinct symmetric and featureless Fermi liquids when there is an inter-valley Hund's term breaking $SU(4)$ spin rotation. Especially, there exists a symmetric and featureless "pseudogap metal" with s…
Pseudogap, Fermi liquid, Van Hove singularity and maxima of the compressibility and of the Knight shift as a function of doping in the two-dimensional Hubbard model
High-$T_{\rm C}$ superconductors show anomalous transport properties in their normal states, such as the bad-metal and pseudogap behaviors. To discuss their origins, it is important to speculate whether these behaviors are material-dependent or universal phenomena in the proximity of the Mott transition, by investigating similar but different material systems. An organic Mott transistor is suitable for this purpose owing to the adjacency between the two-dimensional Mott insulating and superconducting states, simple electronic properties, and high doping/bandwidth tunability in the same sample.…
Unusual quantum phenomena usually emerge upon doping Mott insulators. Using a combinatorial molecular beam epitaxy system integrated with cryogenic scanning tunneling microscopy, we investigate the electronic structure of a modulation-doped Mott insulator Sn/Si(111)-($\sqrt{3}\times \sqrt{3}$)-R30$^\textrm{o}$. In underdoped regions, we observe a universal pseudogap opening around the Fermi level, which changes little with the applied magnetic field and the occurrence of Sn vacancies. The pseudogap gets smeared out at elevated temperatures and alters in size with the spatial confinement of the…
We present a theoretical investigation of the effects of correlations on the electronic structure of the Mott insulator Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ upon electron doping. A rapid collapse of the Mott gap upon doping is found, and the electronic structure displays a strong momentum-space differentiation at low doping level: The Fermi surface consists of pockets centered around $(π/2,π/2)$, while a pseudogap opens near $(π,0)$. Its physical origin is shown to be related to short-range spin correlations. The pseudogap closes upon increasing doping, but a differentiated regime characterized by a modulation of th…
Theory of doped Mott insulators is revisited in the light of recent understanding on the singular self-energy structure of the single-particle Green's function. The unique pole structure in the self-energy induces the high-temperature superconductivity in the anomalous part, while it generates Mott gap and pseudogap in the normal part. Here, we elucidate that fractionalization of electrons, which is exactly hold in the Mott insulator in the atomic limit, more generally produces the emergent Mott-gap fermion and dark (hidden) fermions. It does not require any spontaneous symmetry breaking. The …

In correlated electron systems the metallic character of a material can be strongly suppressed near an integer concentration of conduction electrons as Coulomb interactions forbid the double occupancy of local atomic orbitals. While the Mott-Hubbard physics arising from such on-site interactions has been largely studied, several unexplained phenomena observed in correlated materials challenge this description and call for the development of new ideas. Here we explore a general route for obtaining correlated behavior that is decidedly different from the spin-related Mott-Hubbard mechanism and i…
A weird electronic state accompanied with an anomalous superconducting precursor and/or exotic orders, called the pseudogap state, arises prior to a superconducting condensate in underdoped cuprates that are situated near Mott transition. Another way to make the system approach the Mott transition is the variation of bandwidth or correlation strength, which gives a new dimension to exploring this exotic state. Here we report nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) studies on layered organic superconductors with half-filled bands whose widths are pressure-tuned near the Mott transition. The system sit…
It is widely believed that high-temperature superconductivity in the cuprates emerges from doped Mott insulators. The physics of the parent state seems deceivingly simple: The hopping of the electrons from site to site is prohibited because their on-site Coulomb repulsion U is larger than the kinetic energy gain t. When doping these materials by inserting a small percentage of extra carriers, the electrons become mobile but the strong correlations from the Mott state are thought to survive; inhomogeneous electronic order, a mysterious pseudogap and, eventually, superconductivity appear. How th…
We establish that a doping-driven first-order metal-to-metal transition, from a pseudogap metal to Fermi Liquid, can occur in correlated quantum materials. Our result is based on the exact Dynamical Mean Field Theory solution of the Dimer Hubbard Model. This transition elucidates the origin of many exotic features in doped Mott materials, like the pseudogap in cuprates, incoherent bad metals, enhanced compressibility and orbital selective Mott transition. This phenomenon is suggestive to be at the roots of the many exotic phases appearing in the phase diagram of correlated materials.
We show how strongly correlated materials could be described within the framework of an excitonic insulator formalism, and delineate the relationship between inter- and intra-band ordering phenomena. Our microscopic model of excitons clarifies the fundamental role of Van-Hove-singularity-nesting in driving both inter- and intra-band ordering transitions, and uncovers an interesting connection with resonating-valence-bond physics.
We demonstrate how first-principles calculations of many competing low-energy states of a correlated material, here a cuprate, can be used to develop a thermodynamic model of Mott and pseudogap transitions in terms of magnetic short-range order. Mott physics is found in this picture to be driven by an unbinding of the antiphase domain walls, while the pseudogap phenomenon represents local moment formation. We provide explanations for nematicity and Fermi arc formation, and find a striking correspondence with many-body perturbation theory predictions.
We study fermions in an electrically-probed and asymptotically anti-de Sitter Schwarzschild spacetime which interact via novel chiral symmetry-preserving interactions. Computing the dual fermion two-point correlator, we show that these bulk interactions anisotropically gap Fermi surfaces of the boundary spectrum. Consequently, the interactions we devise provide holographic models for Fermi arcs seen ubiquitously in the pseudogap regime of the cuprates. Our interactions are modifications of the chiral symmetry-breaking Pauli coupling, which has previously been proposed as the holographic realiz…

We study the relationship between the pseudogap and Fermi-surface topology in the two-dimensional Hubbard model by means of the cellular dynamical mean-field theory. We find two possible mean-field metallic solutions on a broad range of interaction, doping and frustration: a conventional renormalized metal and an unconventional pseudogap metal. At half-filling, the conventional metal is more stable and displays an interaction-driven Mott metal-insulator transition. However, for large interaction and small doping, region that is relevant for cuprates, the pseudogap phase becomes the ground stat…
