The carbon-to-oxygen ratio (C/O) in a planet provides critical information about its primordial origins and subsequent evolution. A primordial C/O greater than 0.8 causes a carbide-dominated interior as opposed to a silicate-dominated composition as found on Earth, and the atmospheres can also differ from those in the Solar System. The solar C/O is 0.54. Here we report an analysis of dayside multi-wavelength photometry of the transiting hot-Jupiter WASP-12b that reveals C/O >= 1 in its atmosphere. The atmosphere is abundant in CO. It is depleted in water vapor and enhanced in methane by over two orders of magnitude each compared to a solar-abundance chemical-equilibrium model at the expected temperatures. We also find that the extremely irradiated atmosphere (T > 2,500 K) of WASP-12b lacks a prominent thermal inversion, or a stratosphere, and has very efficient day- night energy circulation. The absence of a strong thermal inversion is in stark contrast to theoretical predictions for the most highly irradiated hot-Jupiter atmospheres.
We present photometric transit observations of the exoplanet WASP-2b using the MTM-500 telescope of the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory of RAS. A brief history of the discovery of the exoplanet WASP-2b and its main characteristics are considered. Observations and the processing procedure are described. The analysis of the obtained results was carried out and compared with information from the ETD and NASA Exoplanet Archive databases. The photometry data of the star WASP-2 and the comparison star GSC 0052201406 are given in the supplementary table.
We present radio observations made towards the exoplanets Qatar-1b and WASP-80b near 150~MHz with the Giant Meterwave Radio Telescope. These targets are relatively nearby irradiated giant exoplanets, a hot Jupiter and a hot Saturn, with sizes comparable to Jupiter but different masses and lower densities. Both the targets are expected to host extended H/He envelopes like Jupiter, with comparable or larger magnetic moments. No radio emission was detected from these exoplanets, with 3sigma limits of 5.9 and 5.2 mJy for Qatar-1b and WASP-80b, respectively, from these targeted observations. These …
The exoplanet WASP-12b is the prototype for the emerging class of ultra-hot, Jupiter-mass exoplanets. Past models have predicted---and near ultra-violet observations have shown---that this planet is losing mass. We present an analysis of two sets of 3.6 $μ$m and 4.5 $μ$m $\textit{Spitzer}$ phase curve observations of the system which show clear evidence of infrared radiation from gas stripped from the planet, and the gas appears to be flowing directly toward or away from the host star. This accretion signature is only seen at 4.5 $μ$m, not at 3.6 $μ$m, which is indicative either of CO emission…
We study the multiplicity of host stars to known transiting extra-solar planets to test competing theories on the formation mechanisms of hot Jupiters. We observed 45 exoplanet host stars using VLT/SPHERE/IRDIS to search for potential companions. For each identified candidate companion we determined the probability that it is gravitationally bound to its host by performing common proper motion checks and modelling of synthetic stellar populations around the host. We detected new candidate companions around K2-38, WASP-72, WASP-80, WASP-87, WASP-88, WASP-108, WASP-118, WASP-120, WASP-122, WASP1…
WASP-33 is one of the few $δ$ Sct stars with a known planetary companion. By analyzing the stellar oscillations, we search for possible star-planet interactions in the pattern of the pulsation. We made use of the Transit and Light Curve Modeller (TLCM) to solve the light curve from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). We include gravity darkening into our analysis. The stellar oscillation pattern of WASP-33 clearly shows signs of several tidally perturbed modes. We find that there are peaks in the frequency spectrum that are at or near the $3$rd, $12$th and $25$th orbital harmonic…
Massive exoplanets on extremely tight orbits, such as WASP-12 b, induce equilibrium tides in their host stars. Following the orbital motion of the planet, the tidal fluid flow in the star can be detected with the radial velocity method. Its signature manifests as the second harmonics of the orbital frequency that mimics a non-zero orbital eccentricity. Using the new radial velocity measurements acquired with the HARPS-N spectrograph at the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo and combining them with the literature data, we show that the apparent eccentricity of WASP-12 b's orbit is non-zero at a 5.8 s…
Studies of exoplanetary atmospheres have found no definite correlations between observed high altitude aerosols and other system parameters. This could be, in part, because of the lack of homogeneous exoplanet samples for which specific parameters can be isolated and inspected. Here we present a set of seven exoplanets with very similar system parameters. We analyze existing photometric timeseries, Gaia parallax, and high-resolution spectroscopic data to produce a new set of homogeneous stellar, planetary, and orbital parameters for these systems. With this we confirm that most measured parame…
We present 22 new transit observations of the exoplanets WASP-18Ab, WASP-19b, and WASP-77Ab, from the Transit Monitoring in the South (TraMoS) project. We simultaneously model our newly collected transit light curves with archival photometry and radial velocity data, to obtain refined physical and orbital parameters. We include TESS light curves of the three exoplanets to perform an extended analysis of the variations in their transit mid-time (TTV) and to refine their planetary orbital ephemeris. We did not find significant $\rm TTV_{RMS}$ variations larger than 47, 65, and 86 seconds for WAS…
TraMoS project III: Improved physical parameters, timing analysis, and star-spot modelling of the WASP-4b exoplanet system from 38 transit observations
The ability for citizen scientists to analyze image data and search for exoplanets using images from small telescopes has the potential to greatly accelerate the search for exoplanets. Recent work on the Exoplanet Transit Interpretation Code (EXOTIC) enables the generation of high-quality light curves of exoplanet transits given such image data. However, on large image datasets, the photometric analysis of the data and fitting light curves can be a time-consuming process. In this work, we first optimize portions of the EXOTIC codebase to enable faster image processing and curve fitting. Specif…
Eleven transit light curves for the exoplanet WASP-140b were studied with the primary objective to investigate the possibility of transit timing variations (TTVs). Previously unstudied MicroObservatory and Las Cumbres Global Telescope Network photometry were analysed using Markov Chain Monte Carlo techniques, including new observations collected by this study of a transit in December 2021. No evidence was found for TTVs. We used two transit models coupled with Bayesian optimization to explore the physical parameters of the system. The radius for WASP-140b was estimated to be $1.38^{+0.18}_{-0.…
Observations of ultra-hot Jupiters indicate the existence of thermal inversion in their atmospheres with day-side temperatures greater than 2200 K. Various physical mechanisms such as non-local thermal equilibrium, cloud formation, disequilibrium chemistry, ionisation, hydrodynamic waves and associated energy, have been omitted in previous spectral retrievals while they play an important role on the thermal structure of their upper atmospheres. We aim at exploring the atmospheric properties of WASP-19b to understand its largely featureless thermal spectra using a state-of-the-art atmosphere cod…
One of the main atmospheric features in exoplanet atmospheres, detectable both from ground- and space-based facilities, is Rayleigh scattering. In hydrogen-dominated planetary atmospheres, Rayleigh scattering causes the measured planetary radius to increase toward blue wavelengths in the optical range. We obtained a spectrophotometric time series of one transit of the Saturn-mass planet WASP-69b using the OSIRIS instrument at the Gran Telescopio Canarias. From the data we constructed 19 spectroscopic transit light curves representing 20 nm wide wavelength bins spanning from 515 nm to 905 nm. W…
Exoplanets with relatively clear atmospheres are prime targets for detailed studies of chemical compositions and abundances in their atmospheres. Alkali metals have long been suggested to exhibit broad wings due to pressure broadening, but most of the alkali detections only show very narrow absorption cores, probably because of the presence of clouds. We report the strong detection of the pressure-broadened spectral profiles of Na, K, and Li absorption in the atmosphere of the super-Neptune WASP-127b, at 4.1$σ$, 5.0$σ$, and 3.4$σ$, respectively. We performed a spectral retrieval modeling on th…
Up to now, WASP-12b is the only hot Jupiter confirmed to have a decaying orbit. The case of WASP-43b is still under debate. Recent studies preferred or ruled out the orbital decay scenario, but further precise transit timing observations are needed to definitively confirm or refute the period change of WASP-43b. This possibility is given by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) space telescope. In this work we used the available TESS data, multi-color photometry data obtained with the Multicolor Simultaneous Camera for studying Atmospheres of Transiting exoplanets 2 (MuSCAT2) and li…
The retrieval approach is currently a standard method for deriving atmospheric properties from observed spectra of exoplanets. However, the approach ignores disequilibrium chemistry in most current retrieval codes, which can lead to misinterpretation of the metallicity or elemental abundance ratios of the atmosphere. We have implemented the disequilibrium effect of vertical mixing or quenching for the major species in hydrogen/helium-dominated atmospheres, namely $\mathrm{CH_4}$, $\mathrm{CO}$, $\mathrm{H_2O}$, $\mathrm{NH_3}$, $\mathrm{N_2}$, and $\mathrm{CO_2}$, for the spectral retrieval co…
Ultra-hot Jupiters offer interesting prospects for expanding our theories on dynamical evolution and the properties of extremely irradiated atmospheres. In this context, we present the analysis of new optical spectroscopy for the transiting ultra-hot Jupiter WASP-121b. We first refine the orbital properties of WASP-121b, which is on a nearly polar (obliquity $ψ^{\rm North}$=88.1$\pm$0.25$^{\circ}$ or $ψ^{\rm South}$=91.11$\pm$0.20$^{\circ}$) orbit, and exclude a high differential rotation for its fast-rotating (P$<$1.13 days), highly inclined ($i_\mathrm{\star}^{\rm North}$=8.1$\stackrel{+3.0}…
The largest and most close-in exoplanets would reflect enough star light to enable its ground-based photometric detection under the condition of a high to moderate albedo. We present the results of an observing campaign of secondary eclipse light curves of three of the most suitable exoplanet targets, WASP-43b, WASP-103b, and TrES-3b. The observations were conducted with meter-sized telescopes in the blue optical broadband filters Johnson B and Johnson V. We do not detect a photometric dimming at the moment of the eclipse, and derive a best-fit eclipse depth by an injection-recovery test. Thes…
Understanding the effects of high-energy radiation and stellar winds on planetary atmospheres is vital for explaining the observed properties of close-in exoplanets. Observations of transiting exoplanets in the triplet of metastable helium lines at 10830 A allow extended atmospheres and escape processes to be studied for individual planets. We observed one transit of WASP-107b with NIRSPEC on Keck at 10830 A. Our observations, for the first time, had significant post-transit phase coverage, and we detected excess absorption for over an hour after fourth contact. The data can be explained by a …
We homogeneously analyse $\sim 3.2\times 10^5$ photometric measurements for $\sim 1100$ transit lightcurves belonging to $17$ exoplanet hosts. The photometric data cover $16$ years 2004--2019 and include amateur and professional observations. Old archival lightcurves were reprocessed using up-to-date exoplanetary parameters and empirically debiased limb-darkening models. We also derive self-consistent transit and radial-velocity fits for $13$ targets. We confirm the nonlinear TTV trend in the WASP-12 data at a high significance, and with a consistent magnitude. However, Doppler data reveal hin…
The technique of transmission spectroscopy allows us to constrain the chemical composition of the atmospheres of transiting exoplanets. It relies on very high signal-to-noise spectroscopic (or spectrophotometric) observations and is thus most suited for bright exoplanet host stars. In the era of TESS, NGST and PLATO, more and more suitable targets, even for mid-sized telescopes, are discovered. Furthermore, a wealth of archival data is available that could become a basis for long-term monitoring of exo-atmospheres. We analyzed archival HARPS spectroscopic time series of four host stars to tran…
Aerosols have been found to be nearly ubiquitous in substellar atmospheres. The precise temperature at which these aerosols begin to form in exoplanets has yet to be observationally constrained. Theoretical models and observations of muted spectral features suggest that silicate clouds play an important role in exoplanets between at least 950 and 2,100 K. However, some giant planets are thought to be hot enough to avoid condensation altogether. Here, we present the near-UV transmission spectrum of an ultra-hot Jupiter, WASP-178b ($\sim$2,450~K), that exhibits significant NUV absorption. This s…
We present ground-based optical transmission spectroscopy of the low-density hot Jupiter WASP-88b covering the wavelength range 4413-8333 Å with the FORS2 spectrograph on the Very Large Telescope. The FORS2 white light curves exhibit a significant time-correlated noise which we model using a Gaussian Process and remove as a wavelength-independent component from the spectroscopic light curves. We analyse complementary photometric observations from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite and refine the system properties and ephemeris. We find a featureless transmission spectrum with increased …
Transmission spectra of exoplanets orbiting active stars suffer from wavelength-dependent effects due to stellar photospheric heterogeneity. WASP-19b, an ultra-hot Jupiter (T$_{eq}$ $\sim$ 2100 K), is one such strongly irradiated gas-giant orbiting an active solar-type star. We present optical (520-900 nm) transmission spectra of WASP-19b obtained across eight epochs using the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph (GMOS) on the Gemini-South telescope. We apply our recently developed Gaussian Processes regression based method to model the transit light curve systematics and extract the transmission …
Aims. To create a retrieval framework which encapsulates the 3D nature of exoplanet atmospheres, and to apply it to observed emission phase curve and transmission spectra of hot Jupiter exoplanet WASP-43b. Methods. We present our 3D framework, which is freely available as a stand-alone module from GitHub. We use the atmospheric modelling and Bayesian retrieval package ARCiS (ARtful modelling Code for exoplanet Science) to perform 8 3D retrievals on simultaneous transmission (HST/WFC3) and phase-dependent emission (HST/WFC3, Spitzer/IRAC) observations of WASP-43b as a case study. We assess how …
