The properties of the two-dimensional exactly solvable Lieb and Baxter models in the critical region are considered based on the thermodynamic method of investigation of a one-component system critical state. From the point of view of the thermodynamic stability the behaviour of adiabatic and isodynamic parameters for these models is analyzed and the types of their critical behaviour are determined. The reasons for the violation of the scaling law hypothesis and the universality hypothesis for the models are clarified.
In this text, we implement a monte carlo algorithm to study thermodynamic properties of ice. Our program, written in Python, is open-sourced and available at https://github.com/AKnightWing/ColdAsIce. We develop a novel scheme to compute the residual entropy of a two dimensional lattice model of ice at absolute zero. A model of energetic ice is also considered and its thermodynamic properties are studied with temperature. We report a remarkable result for the energetic ice model, the presence of a phase transition at non zero temperatures.
The spin-1/2 Ising diamond chain in a magnetic field displays a remarkable pseudo-transition whenever it is driven sufficiently close to a ground-state phase boundary between a classical ferrimagnetic phase and a highly degenerate frustrated phase. The pseudo-transition of the spin-1/2 Ising diamond chain relates to intense thermal excitations from a nondegenerate ferrimagnetic ground state to a highly degenerate manifold of excited states with a frustrated character, which are responsible for an anomalous behavior of thermodynamic quantities. Temperature dependences of entropy and specific he…
Applied magnetic fields are an important tuning parameter for artificial spin ice (ASI) systems, as they can drive phase transitions between different magnetic ground states, or tune through regimes with high populations of emergent magnetic excitations (e.g., monopole-like quasiparticles). Here, using simulations supported by experiments, we investigate the thermodynamic properties and magnetic phases of square and quadrupolar ASI as a function of applied in-plane magnetic fields. Monte Carlo simulations are used to generate field-dependent maps of the magnetization, the magnetic specific hea…
We study single crystals of Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ and Ho$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ under magnetic field and stress applied along their [001] direction. We find that many of the features that the emergent gauge field of spin ice confers to the macroscopic magnetic properties are preserved in spite of the finite temperature. The magnetisation vs. field shows an upward convexity within a broad range of fields, while the static and dynamic susceptibilities present a peculiar peak. Following this feature for both compounds, we determine a single experimental transition curve: that for the Kasteleyn transition in …
Water is one of the most abundant substances on Earth, and ice, i.e., solid water, has more than 18 known phases. Normally ice in nature exists only as Ice Ih, Ice Ic, or a stacking disordered mixture of both. Although many theoretical efforts have been devoted to understanding the thermodynamics of different ice phases at ambient temperature and pressure, there still remains many puzzles. We simulated the reversible transitions between water and different ice phases by performing full atom molecular dynamics simulations. Using the enhanced sampling method MetaITS with the two selected X-ray d…
We present a comprehensive experimental and theoretical study of the kagome ice Coulomb phase, that explores the fine tuning of critical correlations by applied field, temperature and crystal orientation. The continuous modification of algebraic correlations is observed by polarised neutron scattering experiments and is found to be well described by numerical simulations of an idealised model. We further clarify the thermodynamics of field tuned Kasteleyn transitions and demonstrate some dramatic finite size scaling properties that depend on how topological string defects wind around the syste…
In this paper we conduct Monte Carlo simulations to investigate the thermodynamic properties of a geometry of artificial spin ice recently proposed in the literature that had been termed "rewritable" spin ice, for its experimental realization allows total control over the microstates of the system. Our results show that in the thermodynamic limit a single phase transition between a fully magnetized state and a paramagnetic state exists, whereas for finite systems an intermediate phase also emerges, engendering a low temperature pseudo phase transition. This intermediate phase is characterized …
Understanding the nature and behaviour of excitations in quantum spin liquids, and in topological phases of matter in general, is of fundamental importance and has proven crucial for experimental detection and characterisation of candidate materials. Current theoretical and numerical techniques, however, have limited capabilities, especially when it comes to studying gapped excitations. Here, we propose a semiclassical numerical method to study systems whose spin liquid behaviour is underpinned by perturbative ring-exchange Hamiltonians. Our method can readily access both thermodynamic and spe…
While particle-based ices are often considered essentially equivalent to magnet-based spin ices, the two differ essentially in frustration and energetics. We show that at equilibrium particle-based ices correspond exactly to spin ices coupled to a background field. In trivial geometries, such a field has no effect, and the two systems are indeed thermodynamically equivalent. In other cases, however, the field controls a richer phenomenology, absent in magnetic ices, and still largely unexplored: ice rule fragility, topological charge transfer, radial polarization, decimation induced disorder, …
With the use of thermodynamics and general equilibrium conditions only, we study the entropy of a fluid in the vicinity of the critical point of the liquid-vapor phase transition. By assuming a general form for the coexistence curve in the vicinity of the critical point, we show that the functional dependence of the entropy as a function of energy and particle densities necessarily obeys the scaling form hypothesized by Widom. Our analysis allows for a discussion on the properties of the corresponding scaling function, with the interesting prediction that the critical isotherm has the same fun…
