We present recent progress in the calculation of the helium fine-structure splitting of the 2^3P_J states, based on the quantum electrodynamic theory. Apart from the complete evaluation of mα^7 and m^2/Mα^6 corrections, we have performed extensive tests by comparison with all experimental results for light helium-like ions and with the known large nuclear charge asymptotics of individual corrections. Our theoretical predictions are still limited by the unknown mα^8 term, which is conservatively estimated to be 1.7 kHz. However, comparison with the latest experimental result for the 2^3P_0 - 2^3P_2 transition [M. Smiciklas and T. Shiner, Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 123001 (2010)] suggests that the higher-order contribution is in fact much smaller than the theoretical estimate. This means that the spectroscopic determination of αcan be significantly improved if another measurement of the 2^3P_0 - 2^3P_2 transition in helium-like Li^+ or Be^{2+} ion is performed.
We report a calculation of the fine structure splitting in light helium-like atoms, which accounts for all quantum electrodynamical effects up to order α^5 Ry. For the helium atom, we resolve the previously reported disagreement between theory and experiment and determine the fine structure constant with an accuracy of 31 ppb. The calculational results are extensively checked by comparison with the experimental data for different nuclear charges and by evaluation of the hydrogenic limit of individual corrections.
Spectroscopic measurements of the helium atom are performed to high precision using an atomic beam apparatus and electro-optic laser techniques. These measurements, in addition to serving as a test of helium theory, also provide a new determination of the fine structure constant α. An apparatus was designed and built to overcome limitations encountered in a previous experiment. Not only did this allow an improved level of precision but also enabled new consistency checks, including an extremely useful measurement in 3He. I discuss the details of the experimental setup along with the major chan…
Calculational results are presented for the fine-structure splitting of the 2^3P state of helium and helium-like ions with the nuclear charge Z up to 10. Theoretical predictions are in agreement with the latest experimental results for the helium fine-structure intervals as well as with the most of the experimental data available for light helium-like ions. Comparing the theoretical value of the 2^3P_0-2^3P_1 interval in helium with the experimental result [T. Zelevinsky et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 95, 203001 (2005)], we determine the value of the fine-structure constant αwith an accuracy of 31 pa…
The correction to the polarizability of helium due to black-body radiation is calculated near room temperature. A precise theoretical determination of the black-body radiation correction to the polarizability of helium is essential for dielectric gas thermometry and for the determination of the Boltzmann constant. We find that the correction, for not too high temperature, is roughly proportional to a modified hyperpolarizability (two-color hyperpolarizability), which is different from the ordinary hyperpolarizability of helium. Our explicit calculations provide a definite numerical result for …
Improved theoretical predictions for the fine-structure splitting of $2^3P_J$ levels in helium are obtained by the calculation of contributions of order $α^5 Ry$. New results for transition frequencies, $ν_{01} = 29 616 943.01(17)$ kHz and $ν_{12} = 2 291 161.13(30)$ kHz disagree significantly with the experimental values, indicating an outstanding problem in bound state QED.
For decades, improved theory and experiment of the $n=2$ $^3$P fine structure of helium have allowed for increasingly-precise tests of quantum electrodynamics, determinations of the fine-structure constant $α$, and limitations on possible beyond-the-Standard-Model physics. Here we use the new frequency-offset separated-oscillatory-fields (FOSOF) technique to measure the $2^3$P$_2\!\!\to\!2^3$P$_1$ interval. Our result of $2\,291\,176\,590(25)$~Hz represents a major step forward in precision for helium fine-structure measurements.
We present a method to measure the binary diffusion coefficient of mercury atoms in a gas at room temperature and low pressure. It is based on the measurement of the longitudinal spin relaxation of optically pumped mercury-199 atoms in a magnetic field gradient. We provide a consistent set of diffusion coefficients for helium-3, helium-4, argon, krypton, xenon, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, oxygen, and air.
This paper has been temporarily withdrawn by the authors. In the process of 4He 2P fine structure measurement in a vapor cell, highly nonlinear dependences of 2S_1 - 2P_J intervals on helium density are observed and attributed to light pressure. If total angular momentum of the excited state is not greater than that of the ground state, there are large polarization dependences and variations of shifts with helium pressure that exhibit apparent singularities. A pressure-variable cell may be a better system for control of this effect than an atomic beam. A method of avoiding the shifts for the f…
In order to explain discrepancies between theoretical predictions and experimental data for the helium fine structure, we check and recalculate all theoretical contributions up to orders mα^7 and m^2/Mα^6. The previous result for the mα^7 correction is improved by a much more accurate calculation of relativistic corrections to the Bethe logarithm. The theoretical values of the 2^3P_0-2^3P_1 and 2^3P_1-2^3P_2 fine structure intervals in helium are, correspondingly, ν_{01} = 29616946.2(1.6) kHz and ν_{12} = 2291177.3(1.6) kHz, with the uncertanties being due to higher-order effects. For the smal…
There is presently disagreement between theory and experiment as well as between different theoretical calculations concerning the fine-structure splitting of the lowest P state of the neutral helium atom. We believe that we have found a minor error in the formulas used by Drake et al. (Can. J. Phys. 80, 1195 (2002)) in their calculations, and we may have an explanation how the error has occurred. To what extent this might resolve (part of) the discrepancy is not known at present.
We measure the absolute frequency of seven out of the nine allowed transitions between the 2$^3${\it S} and 2$^3${\it P} hyperfine manifolds in a metastable $^3$He beam by using an optical frequency comb synthesizer-assisted spectrometer. The relative uncertainty of our measurements ranges from $1\times 10^{-11}$ to $5\times 10^{-12}$, which is, to our knowledge, the most precise result for any optical $^3$He transition to date. The resulting $2^3${\it P}-2$^3${\it S} centroid frequency is $276\,702\,827\,204.8\,(2.4)$kHz. Comparing this value with the known result for the $^4$He centroid and …
We report a determination of the antiproton magnetic moment, measured in a three-body system, independent of previous experiments. We present results from a systematic study of the hyperfine (HF) structure of antiprotonic helium where we have achieved a precision more than a factor of 10 better than our first measurement. A comparison between the experimental results and three-body quantum electrodynamic (QED) calculations leads to a new value for the antiproton magnetic moment is -2.7862 (83) nuclear magnetons, which agrees with the magnetic moment of the proton within 2.9 x 10e-3.
We estimate the nuclear polarizability correction to atomic transition frequencies in various helium isotopes. This effect is non-negligible for high precision tests of quantum electrodynamics or accurate determination of the nuclear charge radius from spectroscopic measurements in helium atoms and ions. In particular, it amounts to $28(3)$ kHz for 1S-2S transition in 4He+.
An experiment is proposed to excite the 'forbidden' 1s2s 3S1 - 1s2s 1S0 magnetic dipole (M1) transition at 1557 nm in a collimated and slow atomic beam of metastable helium atoms. It is demonstrated that an excitation rate of 5000 /s can be realised with the beam of a 2W narrowband telecom fiber laser intersecting the atomic beam perpendicularly. A Doppler-limited sub-MHz spectroscopic linewidth is anticipated. Doppler-free excitation of 2% of trapped and cooled atoms may be realised in a one-dimensional optical lattice geometry, using the 2W laser both for trapping and spectroscopy. The very …
Agreement between theoretical calculations of atomic structure and spectroscopic measurements is used to constrain possible contribution of exotic spin-dependent interactions between electrons to the energy differences between states in helium-4. In particular, constraints on dipole-dipole interactions associated with the exchange of pseudoscalar bosons (such as axions or axion-like particles, ALPs) with masses $10^{-2}~{\rm eV} \lesssim m \lesssim 10^{4}~{\rm eV}$ are improved by a factor of $\sim 100$. The first atomic-scale constraints on several exotic velocity-dependent dipole-dipole inte…
Dirac equation for an electron bound by a nucleus in the presence of external axially symmetric field can be solved numerically by using the dual-kinetic-balance conditions imposed on the finite basis set (A-DKB method [Rozenbaum et al, Phys. Rev. A 89, 012514 (2014)]). We present the application of this method to describe helium-like ions exposed to homogeneous external magnetic field. The second-order Zeeman shift and the nuclear magnetic shielding constant are evaluated for the ground state, including the leading contribution of the interelectronic interaction. The A-DKB values are compared…
We critically examine the current status of theoretical calculations of the energies, the fine structure, and the isotope shift of the lowest-lying states of helium, searching for unresolved discrepancies with experiments. Calculations are performed within the quantum electrodynamics expansion in powers of the fine structure constant $α$ and the electron-to-nucleus mass ratio $m/M$. For energies, theoretical results are complete through orders $α^6m$ and $α^6m^2/M$, with the resulting accuracy ranging from $0.5$ to $2$~MHz for the $n=2$ states. The fine-structure splitting of the $2^3P$ state …
With this work we start a project of calculating the QED contribution of order $α^7m$ to the $2^3P$-$2^3S$ transition energy in helium, aiming for an accurate determination of the nuclear charge radius $r_E$ from measurements of the corresponding transition frequency. Together with the complementary determination of $r_E$ from muonic helium, this project will provide a stringent test of universality of electromagnetic interactions of leptons in the Standard Model. We report a calculation of the relativistic corrections to the Bethe logarithm for the $2^3S$ and $2^3P$ states, which is the most …
We use Bloch oscillations to transfer coherently many photon momenta to atoms. Then we can measure accurately the recoil velocity $\hbar k/m$ and deduce the fine structure constant $α$. The velocity variation due to Bloch oscillations is measured using atom interferometry. This method yields to a value of the fine structure constant $α^{-1}= 137.035 999 45 (62)$ with a relative uncertainty of about $4.5 \times 10^{-9}$.
In this paper the new type of thermal corrections for the helium and helium-like atomic systems are introduced. These are thermal one-photon exchange between the bound electrons and nucleus as well as between the bound electrons induced by the blackbody radiation (BBR). All the derivations are given within the rigorous QED theory. It is shown that these thermal corrections are the same order in powers of $α$ (fine structure constant) as the well-known BBR-induced Stark shift but the different behaviour in temperature. The numerical results presented in this paper make possible to expect their …
We have measured the forbidden 2 3S1 - 2 1P1 transition at 887 nm in a quantum degenerate gas of metastable He-4 atoms confined in an optical dipole trap. The determined transition frequency is 338 133 594.4 (0.5) MHz, from which we obtain an ionization energy of the 2 1P1 state of 814 709 148.6 (0.5) MHz. This ionization energy is in disagreement by > 3 sigma with the most accurate quantum electrodynamics (QED) calculations available. Our measurements also provide a new determination of the lifetime of the 2 1P1 state of 0.551 (0.004)stat (+ 0.013,- 0.000)syst ns, which is the most accurate d…
We present a derivation of the last unknown part of the $α^7m$ contribution to the Lamb shift of a two-electron atom, induced by the radiative QED effects beyond the Bethe logarithm. This derivation is performed in the framework of nonrelativistic quantum electrodynamics and is valid for the triplet (spin $S = 1$) atomic states. The obtained formulas are free from any divergences and are suitable for a numerical evaluation. This opens a way for a complete numerical calculation of the $α^7m$ QED effects in helium, which will allow an accurate determination of the nuclear charge radius from meas…
In this paper we present a short overview of atom interferometry based on light pulses. We discuss different implementations and their applications for high precision measurements. We will focus on the determination of the ratio h/m of the Planck constant to an atomic mass. The measurement of this quantity is performed by combining Bloch oscillations of atoms in a moving optical lattice with a Ramsey-Bordé interferometer.
The fine structure constant $α$ and the ratio $h/m_{\mathrm{u}}$ between the Planck constant and the unified atomic mass are keystone constants for the determination of other fundamental physical constants, especially the ones involved in the framework of the future International System of units. This paper presents how these two constants, which can be deduced from one another, are measured. We will present in detail the measurement of $h/m_\mathrm{Rb}$ performed by atomic interferometry at the Laboratoire Kastler Brossel in Paris. This type of measurement also allows a test of the standard m…
A weighted difference of the $g$-factors of the H- and Li-like ions of the same element is theoretically studied and optimized in order to maximize the cancelation of nuclear effects between the two charge states. We show that this weighted difference and its combination for two different elements can be used to extract a value for the fine-structure constant from near-future bound-electron $g$-factor experiments with an accuracy competitive with or better than the present literature value.
We report a new experimental scheme which combines atom interferometry with Bloch oscillations to provide a new measurement of the ratio $h/m_{\mathrm{Rb}}$. By using Bloch oscillations, we impart to the atoms up to 1600 recoil momenta and thus we improve the accuracy on the recoil velocity measurement. The deduced value of $h/m_{\mathrm{Rb}}$ leads to a new determination of the fine structure constant $α^{-1}=137.035 999 45 (62)$ with a relative uncertainty of $4.6\times 10^{-9}$. The comparison of this result with the value deduced from the measurement of the electron anomaly provides the mo…
We report an accurate measurement of the recoil velocity of Rb atoms based on Bloch oscillations in a vertical accelerated optical lattice. We transfer about 900 recoil momenta with an efficiency of 99.97 % per recoil. A set of 72 measurements of the recoil velocity, each one with a relative uncertainty of about 33 ppb in 20 min integration time, leads to a determination of the fine structure constant alpha with a statistical relative uncertainty of 4.4 ppb. The detailed analysis of the different systematic errors yields to a relative uncertainty of 6.7 ppb. The deduced value of 1/alpha is 137…
We report a new measurement of the ratio $h/m_{\mathrm{Rb}}$ between the Planck constant and the mass of $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ atom. A new value of the fine structure constant is deduced, $α^{-1}=137.035\,999\,037\,(91)$ with a relative uncertainty of $6.6\times 10^{-10}$. Using this determination, we obtain a theoretical value of the electron anomaly $a_\mathrm{e}=0.001~159~652~181~13(84)$ which is in agreement with the experimental measurement of Gabrielse ($a_\mathrm{e}=0.001~159~652~180~73(28)$). The comparison of these values provides the most stringent test of the QED. Moreover, the precisi…
In the present paper, we study nonresonant corrections for experimental measurements of the transition frequencies in the helium atom. Having attracted more attention, such effects can make a significant contribution to experiments based on one- and two-photon atomic spectroscopy. The quantum interference effects in the measurements of $2^3S_1-n^3D_1$ ($ n=3,\,4,\,5 $) transition frequencies based on Doppler-free two-photon spectroscopy, are considered as a possible source of current discrepancy between the experimental and theoretical data. We demonstrate that line profile asymmetry caused by…
We use Bloch oscillations to transfer coherently many photon momenta to atoms. Then we can measure accurately the ratio h/m_Rb and deduce the fine structure constant alpha. The velocity variation due to the Bloch oscillations is measured thanks to Raman transitions. In a first experiment, two Raman $π$ pulses are used to select and measure a very narrow velocity class. This method yields to a value of the fine structure constant alpha^{-1}= 137.035 998 84 (91) with a relative uncertainty of about 6.6 ppb. More recently we use an atomic interferometer consisting in two pairs of pi/2 pulses. We …
The collision-induced shift and broadening of selected dipole transition lines of pionic helium in gaseous helium at low temperatures up to $T=12$ K and pressure up to a few bar are calculated within variable phase function approach. We predict blue shift of the resonance frequencies of the $(n,l)=(16,15) \rightarrow (16,14) $ and $(16,15) \rightarrow (17,14)$ unfavored transitions and red shift for the favored transition $(17,16) \rightarrow (16,15)$. The result may be helpful in reducing the systematic error in proposed future experiments for determination of the negatively charged pion mass…
Ultracold dilute gases provide ideal settings for measurements of atomic structure. Helium has an internal structure sufficiently simple to permit highly accurate predictions of its resonances and transition rates. Precise laser spectroscopy of helium thus yields empirical constraints on such calculations. These are desirable in the ongoing investigations seeking to reconcile the disagreement between independent determinations of nuclear charge radius data in both hydrogenic and helium atoms. Either the size of these particles are truly constant and quantum electrodynamics (QED) is flawed, or …
The fine structure constant $α$ has a particular status in physics. Its precise determination is required to test the quantum electrodynamics (QED) theory. The constant $α$ is also a keystone for the determination of other fundamental physical constants, especially the ones involved in the framework of the future International System of units. This paper presents Paris experiment, where the fine structure constant is determined by measuring the recoil velocity of a rubidium atom when it absorbs a photon. The impact of the recent improvement of QED calculations of the electron moment anomaly an…
The present knowledge of Lamb shift, fine-, and hyperfine structure of the 2S and 2P states in muonic helium-3 ions is reviewed in anticipation of the results of a first measurement of several $\mathrm{2S\rightarrow2P}$ transition frequencies in the muonic helium-3 ion, $\mathrm{μ^3He^+}$. This ion is the bound state of a single negative muon $μ^-$ and a bare helium-3 nucleus (helion), $\mathrm{^3He^{++}}$. A term-by-term comparison of all available sources, including new, updated, and so far unpublished calculations, reveals reliable values and uncertainties of the QED and nuclear structure-d…
The recoil, vacuum polarization and electron vertex corrections of first and second orders in the fine structure constant $α$ and the ratio of electron to muon and electron to α-particle masses are calculated in the hyperfine splitting of the $1s^{(e)}_{1/2}2s^{(μ)}_{1/2}$ state of muonic helium atom (μe ^4_2He) on the basis of a perturbation theory. We obtain total result for the muonically excited state hyperfine splitting $Δν^{hfs}=4295.66$ MHz which improves previous calculations due to the account of new corrections and more accurate treatment of the electron vertex contribution.
Theoretical predictions for the Lamb shift in helium are limited by unknown quantum electrodynamic effects of the order $α^7m$, where $α$ is the fine-structure constant and $m$ is the electron mass. We make an important step towards the complete calculation of these effects by deriving the most challenging part, which is induced by the virtual photon exchange between all three helium particles, the two electrons, and the nucleus. The complete calculation of the $α^7m$ effect including the radiative corrections will allow comparing of the nuclear charge radii determined from the electronic and …
We provide an up to date summary of the theory contributions to the 2S-2P Lamb shift and the fine structure of the 2P state in the muonic helium ion $(\mathrm{μ^4He})^+$. This summary serves as the basis for the extraction of the alpha particle charge radius from the muonic helium Lamb shift measurements at the Paul Scherrer Institute, Switzerland. Individual theory contributions needed for a charge radius extraction are compared and compiled into a consistent summary. The influence of the alpha particle charge distribution on the elastic two-photon exchange is studied to take into account pos…
Precision spectroscopy of simple atomic systems has refined our understanding of the fundamental laws of quantum physics. In particular, helium spectroscopy has played a crucial role in describing two-electron interactions, determining the fine-structure constant and extracting the size of the helium nucleus. Here we present a measurement of the doubly-forbidden 1557-nanometer transition connecting the two metastable states of helium (the lowest energy triplet state 2 3S1 and first excited singlet state 2 1S0), for which quantum electrodynamic and nuclear size effects are very strong. This tra…

The reduced-mass dependence of relativistic and radiative effects in simple muonic bound systems is investigated. The spin-dependent nuclear recoil correction of order (Zalpha)^4 mu^3/m_N^2 is evaluated for muonic hydrogen and deuterium, and muonic helium ions (mu is the reduced mass and m_N is the nuclear mass). Relativistic corrections to vacuum polarization of order alpha (Zalpha)^4 mu are calculated, with a full account of the reduced-mass dependence. The results shift theoretical predictions. The radiative-recoil correction to vacuum polarization of order alpha (Zα)^5 ln^2(Zalpha) mu^2/m_…
A recent 15 parts-per-million (ppm) experiment on muonic hydrogen found a major discrepancy with QED and independent nuclear size determinations. Here we find a significant discrepancy in a different type of exotic atom, a medium-Z nucleus with two electrons. Investigation of the data collected is able to discriminate between available QED formulations and reveals a pattern of discrepancy of almost 6 standard errors of experimental results from the most recent theoretical predictions with a functional dependence proportional to Z^n where n=4. In both the muonic and highly charged systems, the …
We report on progress towards a measurement of the fine structure constant to an accuracy of $5\times 10^{-10}$ or better by measuring the ratio of the Planck constant to the mass of the cesium atom. Compared to similar experiments, ours is improved in three significant ways: (i) simultaneous conjugate interferometers, (ii) multi-photon Bragg diffraction between same internal states, and (iii) an about 1000 fold reduction of laser phase noise to -138 dBc/Hz. Combining that with a new method to simultaneously stabilize the phases of four frequencies, we achieve 0.2 mrad effective phase noise at…
