In this paper we use trivial defects to define global taffy-like operations on string worldsheets, which preserve the field theory. We fold open and closed strings on a space X into open strings on products of multiple copies of X, and perform checks that the "taffy-folded" worldsheets have the same massless spectra and other properties as the original worldsheets. Such folding tricks are a standard method in the defects community; the novelty of this paper lies in deriving mathematical identities to check that e.g. massless spectra are invariant in topological field theories. We discuss the case of the B model extensively, and also derive the same identities for string topology, where they become statements of homotopy invariance. We outline analogous results in the A model, B-twisted Landau-Ginzburg models, and physical strings. We also discuss the understanding of the closed string states as the Hochschild homology of the open string algebra, and outline possible applications to elliptic genera.
We consider topological gauge theories in three dimensions which are defined by metric independent lagrangians. It has been claimed that the functional integration necessarily depends nontrivially on the gauge-fixing metric. We demonstrate that the partition function and the mean values of the gauge invariant observables do not really depend on the gauge-fixing metric.
We study the consequences of the presence of a boundary in topological field theories in various dimensions. We characterize, univocally and on very general grounds, the field content and the symmetries of the actions which live on the boundary. We then show that these actions are covariant, despite appearances. We show also that physically relevant theories like the 2D Luttinger liquid model, or the 4D Maxwell theory, can be seen as boundary reductions of higher dimensional topological field theories, which do not display local observables.
We analyse the computation of the partition function of 5d $T_N$ theories in Higgs branches using the topological vertex. The theories are realised by a web of $(p,q)$ 5-branes whose dual description may be given by an M-theory compactification on a certain local non-toric Calabi-Yau threefold. We explicitly show how it is possible to directly apply the topological vertex to the non-toric geometry. Using this novel technique, which considerably simplifies the computation by the existing method, we are able to compute the partition function of the higher rank $E_6$, $E_7$ and $E_8$ theories. Mo…
In this paper and a companion one, we study the effect of integrable line defects on entanglement entropy in massive integrable field theories in 1+1 dimensions. The current paper focuses on topological defects that are purely transmissive. Using the form factor bootstrap method, we show that topological defects do not affect the the entanglement entropy in the UV limit and modify slightly the leading exponential correction in the IR. This conclusion holds for both unitary and non-unitary field theories. In contrast, non-topological defects affect the entanglement entropy more significantly bo…
We prove that all connected n-point Green functions of four-dimensional topological Yang-Mills theories quantized in the (anti-)self-dual Landau gauges are tree-level exact, i.e. there are no radiative corrections in this gauge choice.
It was known that the ABJM matrix model is dual to the topological string theory on a Calabi-Yau manifold. Using this relation it was possible to write down the exact instanton expansion of the partition function of the ABJM matrix model. The expression consists of a universal function constructed from the free energy of the refined topological string theory with an overall topological invariant characterizing the Calabi-Yau manifold. In this paper we explore two other superconformal Chern-Simons theories of the circular quiver type. We find that the partition function of one theory enjoys the…
