We present a hybrid microtextured surface with heterogeneous hydrophilic-hydrophobic regions for condensing water vapor while maintaining anti-wetting behavior. Fluid dynamics videos are shown demonstrating the difference between condensation on a homogeneous hydrophobic structure and the same structure with hybrid wetting regions.
We demonstrate that smooth and flat surfaces combining hydrophilic and hydrophobic patterns improve pool boiling performance. Compared to a hydrophilic surface with 7 degree wetting angle, the measured critical heat flux and heat transfer coefficients of the enhanced surfaces are up to respectively 65 and 100% higher. Different networks combining hydrophilic and hydrophobic regions are characterized. While all tested networks enhance the heat transfer coefficient, large enhancements of critical heat flux are typically found for hydrophilic networks featuring hydrophobic islands. Hydrophilic ne…
Data is presented that confirms that hydrophobic coatings reduce friction between objects and water. The results show that the average time it took for the ball with the hydrophobic coating traveled at an average of about 6 inches per second. The ball with the hydrophilic coating traveled at a slower pace, moving at an average of about 5 inches per second and the ball without a coating traveled at an average of about 4.8 inches per second.
Wetting of sessile bubbles on solid and liquid surfaces has been studied. A model is presented for the contact angle of a sessile bubble based on a modified Young equation - the experimental results agree with the model. A hydrophilic surface results in a bubble contact angle of 90 deg whereas on a superhydrophobic surface one observes 134 deg. For hydrophilic surfaces, the bubble angle diminishes with bubble radius - whereas on a superhydrophobic surface, the bubble angle increases. The size of the Plateau borders governs the bubble contact angle - depending on the wetting of the surface.
Fluid flow through layered materials with different wetting behavior is observed in a wide range of applications in biological, environmental and technical systems. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the occuring transport mechanisms of the fluids at the interface between the layered constituents. Of special interest is the water transport in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEM FC). Here, it is necessary to understand the transport mechanisms of water throughout the cell constituents especially on the cathode side, where the excess water has to be removed. This is crucial to cho…
Using three-dimensional numerical simulations, we demonstrate the growth saturation of an unstable thin liquid film on micropatterned hydrophilic-hydrophobic substrates. We consider different transverse-striped micropatterns, characterized by the total fraction of hydrophilic coverage and the width of the hydrophilic stripes. We compare the growth of the film on the micropatterns to the steady states observed on homogeneous substrates, which correspond to a saturated sawtooth and growing finger configurations for hydrophilic and hydrophobic substrates, respectively. The proposed micropatterns …
Dissipative Particle Dynamics (DPD) is becoming a popular particle based method to study flow through microchannels due to the ease with which the presence of biological cells or DNA chains can be modeled. Many Lab-On-Chip (LOC) devices require the ability to manipulate the transport of cells or DNA chains in the fluid flow. Microchannel surfaces coated with combinations of hydrophilic and hydrophobic materials have been found useful for this purpose. In this work, we have numerically studied the hydrodynamics of a steady nonuniform developing flow between two infinite parallel plates with hyd…
We experimentally explore pressure-driven flow of water and n-hexane across nanoporous silica (Vycor glass monoliths with 7 or 10 nm pore diameters, respectively) as a function of temperature and surface functionalization (native and silanized glass surfaces). Hydraulic flow rates are measured by applying hydrostatic pressures via inert gases (argon and helium, pressurized up to 70 bar) on the upstream side in a capacitor-based membrane permeability setup. For the native, hydrophilic silica walls, the measured hydraulic permeabilities can be quantitatively accounted for by bulk fluidity provid…
We analyze theoretically a high-speed drainage of liquid films squeezed between a hydrophilic sphere and a textured super-hydrophobic plane, that contains trapped gas bubbles. A super-hydrophobic wall is characterized by parameters $L$ (texture characteristic length), $b_1$ and $b_2$ (local slip lengths at solid and gas areas), and $ϕ_1$ and $ϕ_2$ (fractions of solid and gas areas). Hydrodynamic properties of the plane are fully expressed in terms of the effective slip-length tensor with eigenvalues that depend on texture parameters and $H$ (local separation). The effect of effective slip is p…
A hybrid thermal lattice Boltzmann phase-change model was performed to simulate the pool boiling above a smooth horizontal heater. The effects of homogenous and heterogeneous wettability on entire boiling curves from the onset of nucleate boiling (ONB) to fully developed film boiling were investigated comprehensively. Results show that concerning the homogeneous and hydrophilic heater, increasing the wall wettability results in a high critical heat flux (CHF) and yields a rightward and upward shift of the boiling curve. It is also found that decreasing the wettability promotes the occurrence o…
For super-heated water on a substrate with hydrophobic patches immersed in a hydrophilic matrix, one can choose the temperature so that micro-bubbles will form, grow and merge on the hydrophobic patches and not on the hydrophilic matrix. Until covering a patch, making a pinned macro-bubble, a bubble has a contact angle $π-θ_2$, where $θ_2$ is the receding contact angle of water on the patch material. This pinned macro-bubble serves as the initial condition of a quasi-static growth process, à la Landau, leading to detachment through the formation of a neck, so long as depinning and dewetting of…
The hydrodynamics associated with water-entry of spheres can be highly variable with respect to the material and kinematic properties of the sphere. This series of five fluid dynamics videos illustrates several subtle but interesting variations. The first series of videos contrasts the nature of impact between a hydrophilic and hydrophobic sphere, and illustrates how surface coating can affect whether or not an air cavity is formed. The second video series illustrates how spin and surface treatments can alter the splash and cavity formation following water entry. The spinning sphere causes a w…
The breakup dynamics of a capillary bridge on a hydrophobic stripe between two hydrophilic stripes is studied experimentally and numerically using direct numerical simulations. The capillary bridge is formed from an evaporating water droplet wetting three neighboring stripes of a chemically patterned surface. By considering the breakup process in a phase space representation, the breakup dynamics can be evaluated without the uncertainty in determining the precise breakup time. The simulations are based on the Volume-of-Fluid (VOF) method implemented in Free Surface 3D (FS3D). In order to const…
Patterned surfaces with large effective slip lengths, such as super-hydrophobic surfaces containing trapped gas bubbles, have the potential to reduce hydrodynamic drag. Based on lubrication theory, we analyze an approach of a hydrophilic disk to such a surface. The drag force is predicted analytically and formulated in terms of a correction function to the Reynolds equation, which is shown to be the harmonic mean of corrections expressed through effective slip lengths in the two principal (fastest and slowest) orthogonal directions. The reduction of drag is especially pronounced for a thin (co…
In this study we experimentally investigate bubbly drag reduction in a highly turbulent flow of water with dispersed air at $5.0 \times 10^{5} \leq \text{Re} \leq 1.7 \times 10^{6}$ over a non-wetting surface containing micro-scale roughness. To do so, the Taylor-Couette geometry is used, allowing for both accurate global drag and local flow measurements. The inner cylinder - coated with a rough, hydrophobic material - is rotating, whereas the smooth outer cylinder is kept stationary. The crucial control parameter is the air volume fraction $α$ present in the working fluid. For small volume fr…
In recent years, the lattice Boltzmann (LB) method has been widely employed to simulate boiling phenomena [A. Márkus and G. Házi, Phys. Rev. E 83, 046705 (2011); Biferale et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 108, 104502 (2012); Li et al., Phys. Rev. E 96, 063303 (2017); Wu et al., Int. J. Heat Mass Transfer 126, 773 (2018)]. However, a very important issue still remains open, i.e., how does boiling occur in the LB simulations? For instance, the existing LB studies showed that the boiling on a hydrophobic surface begins at a lower wall superheat than that on a hydrophilic surface, which qualitatively agree…
The impact of a jet of droplets upon surfaces of varying hydrophobicity is studied via high-speed imaging. Microstructures on silicone surfaces consisting of cylindrical pillars of varying sizes and spacings are utilized to enhance hydrophobicity. Comparison of droplet motion after impact with these microstructured surfaces is contrasted with that noted for plain glass (hydrophilic) and flat silicone surfaces. Fluid dynamics videos are captured at 6000 fps and played back at 30 fps over a field of view of 1.35 cm (height) X 2.7 cm (width) that is back-illuminated with an LED array for 800-micr…
A recent experiment showed that cylindrical segments of water filling a hydrophilic stripe on an otherwise hydrophobic surface display a capillary instability when their volume is increased beyond the critical volume at which their apparent contact angle on the surface reaches ninety degrees (Gau et al., Science, 283, 1999). Surprisingly, the fluid segments did not break up into droplets -- as would be expected for a classical Rayleigh-Plateau instability -- but instead displayed a long-wavelength instability where all excess fluid gathered in a single bulge along each stripe. We consider here…
Inspired by the stenocara beetle, we study an ideal flat surface composed of a regular array of hydrophilic circular patches in a hydrophobic matrix on an incline of tilt $α$ with respect to the horizontal. Based on an exact solution of the Laplace-Young equation at first order in the Bond number, the liquid storage capacity of the surface is maximized as function of the patch radius, for suitable ranges of hydrophilic and hydrophobic contact angles, for tilt angles such as $45^{\circ}$ or $90^\circ$. It is found that the optimal radius equally prevents dewetting from the top of the patches an…
Superhydrophobic surfaces with the self-cleaning behavior of lotus leaves are sought for drag reduction and phase change heat transfer applications. These superrepellent surfaces have traditionally been fabricated by random or deterministic texturing of a hydrophobic material. Recently, superrepellent surfaces have also been made from hydrophilic materials, by deterministic texturing using photolithography, without low-surface energy coating. Here, we show that hydrophilic materials can also be made superrepellent to water by chemical texturing, a stochastic rather than deterministic process. …
We describe a generalization of the tensorial slip boundary condition, originally justified for a thick (compared to texture period) channel, to any channel thickness. The eigenvalues of the effective slip length tensor, however, in general case become dependent on the gap and cannot be viewed as a local property of the surface, being a global characteristic of the channel. To illustrate the use of the tensor formalism we develop a semi-analytical theory of an effective slip in a parallel-plate channel with one super-hydrophobic striped and one hydrophilic surface. Our approach is valid for an…
The spreading dynamics of Newtonian liquids have been extensively studied in hydrophilic and hydrophobic surfaces and its behavior has been extensively explored over the last years. However, drop impact of Non-Newtonian liquids still needs further study. Luu and Forterre (J. Fluid Mech., 632, 2009) successfully found scaling laws for yield-stress fluids on hydrophilic surfaces. They also uncovered interesting and yet unexplained regimes when the impact was performed on a superhydrophobic surface. In this work, we perform drop impact experiments on micro-patterned surfaces with two types of non…
