We discuss the colour, age and metallicity gradients in a wide sample of local SDSS early- and late-type galaxies. From the fitting of stellar population models we find that metallicity is the main driver of colour gradients and the age in the central regions is a dominant parameter which rules the scatter in both metallicity and age gradients. We find a consistency with independent observations and a set of simulations. From the comparison with simulations and theoretical considerations we are able to depict a general picture of a formation scenario.
We examine the colour-magnitude relation of approximately 5000 Brightest Cluster Galaxies (BCGs) in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, and compare with non-BCG E/S0 galaxies. The colour-magnitude and colour-sigma (velocity dispersion) relations are flatter in slope (by a factor of about 2) for BCGs than for non-BCG E/S0s, and the BCGs also tend to be redder by 0.01 magnitudes in g-r. We investigate radial colour gradients in both samples, using the ratio of the de Vaucouleurs radii in the g and r bands. We find BCGs have significantly flatter (by 23%) mean colour gradients than other high luminosit…
We investigate the [3.6] - [4.5] Spitzer-IRAC colour behaviour of the early-type galaxies of the SAURON survey, a representative sample of 48 nearby ellipticals and lenticulars. We investigate how this colour, which is unaffected by dust extinction, can be used to constrain the stellar populations in these galaxies. We find a tight relation between the [3.6]-[4.5] colour and effective velocity dispersion, a good mass-indicator in early-type galaxies. Contrary to other colours in the optical and near-infrared, we find that the colours become bluer for larger galaxies. The relations are tighter …
The evolutionary path followed by a galaxy shapes its internal structure, and, in particular, its internal colour variation. We present a study of the internal colour variation within galaxies from the Seventh Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS DR7). We statistically study the connection between the internal colour variation and global galactic properties, looking for hints of the recent galactic evolution. Considering only galaxies with good photometry and spectral measurements, we define four luminosity-threshold samples within the redshift range 0.01<z<0.17, each containing …
We use a combination of deep optical (gri) and near-infrared (H) photometry to study the radially-resolved colours of a broad sample of 300 Virgo cluster galaxies. For most galaxy types, we find that the median g-H colour gradient is either flat (gas-poor giants and gas-rich dwarfs) or negative (i.e., colours become bluer with increasing radius; gas-poor dwarfs, spirals, and gas-poor peculiars). Later-type galaxies typically exhibit more negative gradients than early-types. Given the lack of a correlation between the central colours and axis ratios of Virgo spiral galaxies, we argue that dust …
We discuss the existence of a common colour-magnitude relation (CMR) of metal-poor globular clusters and early-type galaxies, i.e. giant ellipticals, normal ellipticals and lenticulars, dwarf ellipticals and lenticulars, and dwarf spheroidals. Such CMR would cover a range of ~ 14 mag, extending from the brightest galaxies, down to the globular clusters on the fainter side.
We investigate the effects of AGN feedback on the colour evolution of galaxies found in local (z<0.2) groups and clusters. Galaxies located within the lobes of powerful Fanaroff-Riley type II (edge-brightened) sources show much redder colours than neighbouring galaxies that are not spatially coincident with the radio source. By contrast, no similar effect is seen near Fanaroff-Riley type I (core-dominated) radio sources. We show that these colours are consistent with FR-IIs truncating star formation as the expanding bow shock overruns a galaxy. We examine a sample of clusters with no detectabl…
We present a study characterizing the environments of galaxies in the redshift range of 0.4 < z < 1 based on data from the POWIR near infrared imaging and DEEP2 spectroscopic redshift surveys, down to a stellar mass of log M* = 10.25 M_sun. Galaxy environments are measured in terms of nearest neighbour densities as well as fixed aperture densities and kinematical and dynamical parameters of neighbour galaxies within a radius of 1 Mpc. We disentangle the correlations between galaxy stellar mass, galaxy colour and galaxy environment, using not only galaxy number densities, but also other environ…
Population III galaxies, made partly or exclusively of metal-free stars, are predicted to exist at high redshifts and may produce very strong Lya emission. A substantial fraction of these Lya photons are likely absorbed in the intergalactic medium at z>6, but recent simulations suggest that significant Lya emission may be detectable up to z~8.5, i.e. well into the reionization epoch. Here, we argue that high-redshift population III galaxies with strong Lya emission can be identified in Hubble Space Telescope imaging data because of their unusual colours. We quantify this effect in some of the …
We present a study on the environments of the SDSS galaxies divided into fine classes based on their morphology, colour and spectral features. The SDSS galaxies are classified into early-type and late-type; red and blue; passive, HII, Seyfert and LINER, which returns a total of 16 fine classes of galaxies. We estimate the local number density, target-excluded local luminosity density, local colour, close pair fraction and the luminosity and colour of the brightest neighbour, which are compared between the fine classes comprehensively. The morphology-colour class of galaxies strongly depends on…
Using GALFORM, a semi-analytical model of galaxy formation in the Lambda cold dark matter cosmology, we study the rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) colours of Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs) in the redshift range 2.5 < z < 10. As the impact of dust on UV luminosity can be dramatic, our model includes a self-consistent computation of dust attenuation based on a radiative transfer model. We find that intrinsically brighter galaxies suffer stronger dust attenuation than fainter ones, though the relation has a large scatter. The model predicts galaxies with UV colours consistent with the colour selection re…
The interpretation that bimodal colour distributions of globular clusters (GCs) reflect bimodal metallicity distributions has been challenged. Non-linearities in the colour to metallicity conversions caused by the horizontal branch (HB) stars may be responsible for transforming a unimodal metallicity distribution into a bimodal (optical) colour distribution. We study optical/near-infrared (NIR) colour distributions of the GC systems in 14 E/S0 galaxies. We test whether the bimodal feature, generally present in optical colour distributions, remains in the optical/NIR ones. The latter colour com…
We have derived colour gradients for a sample of 20 early-type galaxies (ETGs) at 1 < z_spec < 2 selected from the GOODS-South field. The sample includes both normal ETGs (13) having effective radii comparable to the mean radius of local ones and compact ETGs (7) having effective radii from two to six times smaller. Colour gradients have been derived in the F606W-F850LP bands (UV-U rest-frame) taking advantage of the ultradeep HST-ACS observations covering this field and providing a spatial resolution of about 0.8 kpc at the redshift of the galaxies. Despite of the narrow wavelength baseline c…
We combine UV/Optical/near-IR/mid-IR data on a sample of ~240 S0 galaxies to examine various star formation related processes in them. We split the sample into bright and faint S0 galaxies based on their K band luminosity. Comparing the FUV-NUV versus NUV-K color-color diagram with a Simple Stellar Population (SSP) model shows that ellipticals and bright S0 galaxies are dominated by a stellar population of age > 10^9 years while faint S0 galaxies may contain stars as young as 10^8 years, providing evidence for relatively recent star formation activity. The strength of the 4000A break is also s…
IGMtransmission is a Java graphical user interface that implements Monte Carlo simulations to compute the corrections to colours of high-redshift galaxies due to intergalactic attenuation based on current models of the Intergalactic Medium. The effects of absorption due to neutral hydrogen are considered, with particular attention to the stochastic effects of Lyman Limit Systems. Attenuation curves are produced, as well as colours for a wide range of filter responses and model galaxy spectra. Alternative filter response curves and spectra may be readily uploaded. The code is freely available f…
We describe the effect of AGN light on host galaxy optical and UV-optical colours, as determined from X-ray-selected AGN host galaxies at z~1, and compare the AGN host galaxy colours to those of a control sample matched to the AGN sample in both redshift and stellar mass. We identify as X-ray-selected AGNs 8.7 +4/-3 per cent of the red-sequence control galaxies, 9.8 +/-3 per cent of the blue-cloud control galaxies, and 14.7 +4/-3 per cent of the green-valley control galaxies. The nuclear colours of AGN hosts are generally bluer than their outer colours, while the control galaxies exhibit redde…
We present a multi-wavelength study of the nature of the SDSS galaxies divided into fine classes based on their morphology, colour and spectral features. The SDSS galaxies are classified into early-type and late-type; red and blue; passive, HII, Seyfert and LINER, which returns a total of 16 fine classes of galaxies. The properties of galaxies in each fine class are investigated from radio to X-ray, using 2MASS, IRAS, FIRST, NVSS, GALEX and ROSAT data. The UV - optical - NIR colours of blue early-type galaxies (BEGs) seem to result from the combination of old stellar population and recent star…
The acquisition of deep Near-IR imaging with Wide Field Camera 3 on the Hubble Space Telescope has provided the opportunity to study the very-high redshift Universe. For galaxies up to $z\approx 7.7$ sufficient wavelength coverage exists to probe the rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) continuum without contamination from either Lyman-$α$ emission or the Lyman-$α$ break. In this work we use Near-IR imaging to measure the rest-frame UV continuum colours of galaxies at $4.7<z<7.7$. We are have carefully defined a colour-colour selection to minimise any inherent bias in the measured UV continuum slope fo…
The unexpected rising flux of early-type galaxies at decreasing ultraviolet (UV) wavelengths is a long-standing mystery. One important observational constraint is the correlation between UV-optical colours and Mg2 line strengths found by Burstein et al. (1988). The simplest interpretation of this phenomenon is that the UV strength is related to the Mg line strength. Under this assumption, we expect galaxies with larger Mg gradients to have larger UV colour gradients. By combining UV imaging from GALEX, optical imaging from MDM and SAURON integral-field spectroscopy, we investigate the spatiall…
We present a series of colour evolution models for Luminous Red Galaxies (LRGs) in the 7th spectroscopic data release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), computed using the full-spectrum fitting code VESPA on high signal-to-noise stacked spectra. The colour-evolution models are computed as a function of colour, luminosity and redshift, and we do not a-priori assume that LRGs constitute a uniform population of galaxies in terms of stellar evolution. By computing star-formation histories from the fossil record, the measured stellar evolution of the galaxies is decoupled from the survey's sel…
In a recent paper we presented the first semi-analytic model of galaxy formation in which the Thermally-Pulsing Asymptotic Giant Branch phase of stellar evolution has been fully implemented. Here we address the comparison with observations, and show how the TP-AGB recipe affects the performance of the model in reproducing the colours and near-IR luminosities of high-redshift galaxies. We find that the semi-analytic model with the TP-AGB better matches the colour-magnitude and colour-colour relations at z ~ 2, both for nearly-passive and for star-forming galaxies. The model with TP-AGB produces…
The faint stellar halos of galaxies contain key information about the oldest stars and the process of galaxy formation. A previous study of stacked SDSS images of disk galaxies has revealed a halo with an abnormally red r-i colour, seemingly inconsistent with our current understanding of stellar halos. Here, we investigate the statistical properties of the faint envelopes of low surface brightness disk galaxies to look for further support for a red excess. 1510 edge-on low surface brightness galaxies were selected from the SDSS Data Release 5, rescaled to the same apparent size, aligned and st…
We study the far infrared (60-500 $μ$m) colours of late-type galaxies in the $Herschel$ Reference Survey, a K-band selected, volume limited sample of nearby galaxies. The far infrared colours are correlated with each other, with tighter correlations for the indices that are closer in wavelength. We also compare the different colour indices to various tracers of the physical properties of the target galaxies, such as the surface brightness of the ionising and non-ionising stellar radiation, the dust attenuation and the metallicity. The emission properties of the cold dust dominating the far inf…
We study the environments of 6 radio galaxies at 2.2 < z < 2.6 using wide-field near-infrared images. We use colour cuts to identify galaxies in this redshift range, and find that three of the radio galaxies are surrounded by significant surface overdensities of such galaxies. The excess galaxies that comprise these overdensities are strongly clustered, suggesting they are physically associated. The colour distribution of the galaxies responsible for the overdensity are consistent with those of galaxies that lie within a narrow redshift range at z ~ 2.4. Thus the excess galaxies are consistent…
We investigate the development of the red sequence (RS) of cluster galaxies by using a semi-analytic model of galaxy formation. Results show good agreement between the general trend of the simulated RS and the observed relation in early-type galaxies. However, the most luminous galaxies ($M_V \lesssim -20$) depart from the linear fit to observed data, displaying almost constant colours. We analyze the dependence with redshift of the fraction of stellar mass contributed to each galaxy by different processes (i.e., quiescent star formation, disc instability and mergers), finding that the evoluti…
By combining optical and near-IR observations from the Hubble Space Telescope with NIR photometry from the Spitzer Space Telescope it is possible to measure the rest-frame UV-optical colours of galaxies at z=4-8. The UV-optical spectral energy distribution of star formation dominated galaxies is the result of several different factors. These include the joint distribution of stellar masses, ages, and metallicities, and the subsequent reprocessing by dust and gas in the ISM. Using a large cosmological hydrodynamical simulation we investigate the predicted spectral energy distributions of galaxi…
We analyze the evolution of colour gradients predicted by the hydrodynamical models of early type galaxies (ETGs) in Pipino et al. (2008), which reproduce fairly well the chemical abundance pattern and the metallicity gradients of local ETGs. We convert the star formation (SF) and metal content into colours by means of stellar population synthetic model and investigate the role of different physical ingredients, as the initial gas distribution and content, and eps_SF, i.e. the normalization of SF rate. From the comparison with high redshift data, a full agreement with optical rest-frame observ…
(Abridged) We present new optical and near-infrared imaging for a sample of 98 spectroscopically-selected galaxy groups at 0.25<z<0.55. We measure accurate colours for group members and the surrounding field population, statistically complete above a stellar mass limit of M=1E10 Msun. The overall colour distribution is bimodal in both the field and group samples; but at fixed luminosity the fraction of group galaxies populating the red peak is larger, by 20+/-7 per cent, than that of the field. In particular, group members with early-type morphologies, as identified in HST imaging, exhibit a t…
Context. Absorption line indices are widely used to determine the stellar population parameters such as age and metallicity of galaxies, but it is not easy to obtain the line indices of some distant galaxies that have colours available. Aims. This paper investigates the correlations between absorption line indices and colours. Methods. A few statistical fitting methods are mainly used, via both the observational data of Sloan Digital Sky Survey and a widely used theoretical stellar population model. Results. Some correlations between widely used absorption line indices and ugriz colours are fo…
We have assembled a large, high quality catalogue of galaxy colours from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7, and have identified 21,347 galaxies in pairs spanning a range of projected separations (r_p < 80 h_{70}^{-1} kpc), relative velocities (Δv < 10,000 km/s, which includes projected pairs that are essential for quality control), and stellar mass ratios (from 1:10 to 10:1). We find that the red fraction of galaxies in pairs is higher than that of a control sample matched in stellar mass and redshift, and demonstrate that this difference is likely due to the fact that galaxy pairs r…
We analyse V and H-band surface photometry of a sample of 18 Sb-Sd galaxies. Combining high resolution HST images with ground-based NIR observations, we extract photometric profiles, which cover the whole disk and provide the highest possible resolution. This is the first photometric study of late-type spirals for which the stellar kinematics have been measured. For 10 out of the 18 galaxies, HST data in both F160W (H) and F606W (V) are available, and, for those, we present colour maps and radial colour profiles at the resolution of the Hubble Space Telescope. Colours vary significantly from g…
We make use of Spitzer imaging between 4 and 16 micron and near-infrared data at 2.2 micron to investigate the nature and distribution of the mid-infrared emission in a sample of early-type galaxies in the Virgo cluster. These data allow us to conclude, with some confidence, that the emission at 16 micron in passive ETGs is stellar in origin, consistent with previous work concluding that the excess mid-infrared emission comes from the dusty envelopes around evolved AGB stars. There is little evidence for the mid-infrared emission of an unresolved central component, as might arise in the presen…
We investigate the nature of extremely red galaxies (ERGs), objects whose colours are redder than those found in the red sequence present in colour-magnitude diagrams of galaxies. We selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7 a volume-limited sample of such galaxies in the redshift interval 0.010 < z < 0.030, brighter than M_r = -17.8 (magnitudes dereddened, corrected for the Milky Way extinction) and with (g-r) colours larger than those of galaxies in the red sequence. This sample contains 416 ERGs, which were classified visually. Our classification was cross-checked with other…
The determination of stellar populations of galaxies are important for studying the formation and evolution of galaxies, because all galaxies contain many stars and they evolve with galaxies. Spectra data are usually used to determine the stellar populations of nearby galaxies as they have the ability to disentangle the degeneracy between stellar age and metallicity. However, it is difficult to give similar studies to distant (e.g., $z >$ 0.3) galaxies because of the lack of reliable spectra data. This is actually limited by current observational equipments and methods. In fact, the informatio…
We present optical and IR integrated colours and SBF magnitudes, computed from stellar population synthesis models that include emission from the dusty envelopes surrounding TP-AGB stars undergoing mass-loss. We explore the effects of varying the mass-loss rate by one order of magnitude around the fiducial value, modifying accordingly both the stellar parameters and the output spectra of the TP-AGB stars plus their dusty envelopes. The models are single burst, and range in age from a few Myr to 14 Gyr, and in metallicity between $Z$ = 0.0001 and $Z$ = 0.07; they combine new calculations for th…
We address the question of whether massive red and blue galaxies trace the same large-scale structure at z~0.6 using the CMASS sample of galaxies from Data Release 12 of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey III. After splitting the catalog into subsamples of red and blue galaxies using a simple colour cut, we measure the clustering of both subsamples and construct the correlation coefficient, r, using two statistics. The correlation coefficient quantifies the stochasticity between the two subsamples, which we examine over intermediate scales (20 < R < 100 Mpc/h). We find that on these intermediate sca…
Although the optical colour-magnitude diagram of galaxies allows one to select red sequence objects, neither can it be used for galaxy classification without additional observational data such as spectra or high-resolution images, nor to identify blue galaxies at unknown redshifts. We show that adding the near ultraviolet colour to the optical CMD reveals a tight relation in the three-dimensional colour-colour-magnitude space smoothly continuing from the "blue cloud" to the "red sequence". We found that 98 per cent of 225,000 low-redshift (Z<0.27) galaxies follow a smooth surface g-r=F(M,NUV-r…
We calculate the colours and luminosities of redshift z = 0.1 galaxies from the EAGLE simulation suite using the GALAXEV population synthesis models. We take into account obscuration by dust in birth clouds and diffuse ISM using a two-component screen model, following the prescription of Charlot and Fall. We compare models in which the dust optical depth is constant to models where it depends on gas metallicity, gas fraction and orientation. The colours of EAGLE galaxies for the more sophisticated models are in broad agreement with those of observed galaxies. In particular, EAGLE produces a re…
We present and analyse optical and ultra-violet colours for passive and optically-red Coma cluster galaxies for which we have spectroscopic age and element abundance estimates. Our sample of 150 objects covers a wide range in mass, from giant ellipticals to the bright end of the dwarf-galaxy regime. We focus on the colours FUV-i, NUV-i, FUV-NUV, u*-g and g-i. We find that all of these colours are correlated with both luminosity and velocity dispersion at the >5 sigma level, with FUV-i and FUV-NUV becoming bluer with increasing `mass' while the other colours become redder. We perform an empiric…
The evolution of number density, size and intrinsic colour is determined for a volume-limited sample of visually classified early-type galaxies selected from the HST/ACS images of the GOODS North and South fields (version 2). The sample comprises 457 galaxies over 320 arcmin2 with stellar masses above 3E10 Msun in the redshift range 0.4<z<1.2. Our data allow a simultaneous study of number density, intrinsic colour distribution and size. We find that the most massive systems (>3E11 Msun) do not show any appreciable change in comoving number density or size in our data. Furthermore, when includi…
Among the properties shaping the light of a galaxy, the star formation history (SFH) is one of the most challenging to model due to the variety of correlated physical processes regulating star formation. In this work, we leverage the stellar population synthesis model FSPS, together with SFHs predicted by the hydrodynamical simulation IllustrisTNG and the empirical model UNIVERSEMACHINE, to study the impact of star formation variability on galaxy colours. We start by introducing a model-independent metric to quantify the burstiness of a galaxy formation model, and we use this metric to demonst…
We present a study of the cold gas contents of the Atlas3D early-type galaxies, in the context of their optical colours, near-UV colours, and Hβ absorption line strengths. Early-type (elliptical and lenticular) galaxies are not as gas-poor as previously thought, and at least 40% of local early-type galaxies are now known to contain molecular and/or atomic gas. This cold gas offers the opportunity to study recent galaxy evolution through the processes of cold gas acquisition, consumption (star formation), and removal. Molecular and atomic gas detection rates range from 10% to 34% in red sequenc…
Many brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) at the centers of X-ray selected clusters exhibit clear evidence for recent star formation. However, studies of BCGs in optically-selected clusters show that star formation is not enhanced when compared to control samples of non-BCGs of similar stellar mass. Here we analyze a sample of 113 BCGs in low redshift (z<0.1), optically-selected clusters, a matched control sample of non-BCGs, and a smaller sample of BCGs in X-ray selected clusters. We convolve the SDSS images of the BCGs to match the resolution of the GALEX data and we measure UV-optical colours …
The nearby Lynx-Cancer void is a good laboratory to study the effect of very rarefied environment on the evolution of the least massive dwarf galaxies. A recently compiled sample of this void's galaxies includes about one hundred objects with M_B in the range -12 to -18 mag. Good quality images are available in the SDSS database for ~80% of the sample. Their u,g,r,i,z photometry allows one to derive galaxy stellar mass (and, incorporating HI data, gas mass-fraction) and ages of visible stellar populations, and hence, the epoch of their formation (first SF episode). We present the first photome…
Recent studies suggest that the quenching properties of galaxies are correlated over several mega-parsecs. The large-scale "galactic conformity" phenomenon around central galaxies has been regarded as a potential signature of "galaxy assembly bias" or "pre-heating", both of which interpret conformity as a result of direct environmental effects acting on galaxy formation. Building on the iHOD halo quenching framework developed in Zu & Mandelbaum (2015, 2016), we discover that our fiducial halo mass quenching model, without any galaxy assembly bias, can successfully explain the overall environme…
We present the results of a study investigating the rest-frame ultra-violet (UV) spectral slopes of redshift z~5 Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs). By combining deep Hubble Space Telescope imaging of the CANDELS and HUDF fields with ground-based imaging from the UKIDSS Ultra Deep Survey (UDS), we have produced a large sample of z~5 LBGs spanning an unprecedented factor of >100 in UV luminosity. Based on this sample we find a clear colour-magnitude relation (CMR) at z~5, such that the rest-frame UV slopes (beta) of brighter galaxies are notably redder than their fainter counterparts. We determine tha…
UV and optical surveys are essential to gain insight into the processes driving galaxy formation and evolution. The rest-frame UV emission is key to measure the cosmic SFR. However, UV light is strongly reddened by dust. In starburst galaxies, the UV colour and the attenuation are linked, allowing to correct for dust extinction. Unfortunately, evidence has been accumulating that the relation between UV colour and attenuation is different for normal star-forming galaxies when compared to starburst galaxies. It is still not understood why star-forming galaxies deviate from the UV colour-attenuat…
A significant number of intermediate age clusters (1-2 Gyr) in the Magellanic Clouds appear to have multiple stellar populations within them, derived from bi-modal or extended main sequence turn offs. If this is interpreted as an age spread, the multiple populations are separated by a few hundred Myr, which would call into question the long held notion that clusters are simple stellar populations. Here we show that stellar rotation in stars with masses between 1.2-1.7 Msun can mimic the effect of a double or multiple population, whereas in actuality only a single population exists. The two mai…
We use the combined photometric SDSS + GALEX database to look for populations of luminous blue star-forming galaxies. These were initially identified from such a sample at redshifts near 0.4, using SDSS spectra. We make use of the colour index previously defined to separate stars and QSOs, to locate more of these unusual galaxies, to fainter limits. They are found in significant numbers in two different regions of the related colour-magnitude plot. Within these regions, we use the ensemble 7-colour photometry to estimate the populations of blue star-forming galaxies at redshift near 0.4, and a…
Characterizing the properties of the host galaxies of merging compact objects provides essential clues to interpret current and future gravitational-wave detections. Here, we investigate the stellar mass, star formation rate (SFR), metallicity and colours of the host galaxies of merging compact objects in the local Universe, by combining the results of MOBSE population-synthesis models together with galaxy catalogs from the EAGLE simulation. We predict that the stellar mass of the host galaxy is an excellent tracer of the merger rate per galaxy ${\rm n}_{\rm GW}$ of double neutron stars (DNSs)…
Colour-M/L (mass-to-light) relations are a popular recipe to derive stellar mass in external galaxies. Stellar mass estimates often rely on near infrared (NIR) photometry, considered an optimal tracer since it is little affected by dust and by the "frosting" effect of recent star formation episodes. However, recent literature has highlighted that theoretical estimates of the NIR M/L ratio strongly depend on the modelling of the Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) phase. We use the latest Padova isochrones, with detailed modelling of the Thermally Pulsing AGB phase, to update theoretical colour-M/L r…
