The high frequency behaviour for random eigenfunctions of the spherical Laplacian has been recently the object of considerable interest, also because of strong motivations arising from Physics and Cosmology. In this paper, we are concerned with the high frequency behaviour of excursion sets; in particular, we establish a Uniform Central Limit Theorem for the empirical measure, i.e. the proportion of spherical surface where spherical Gaussian eigenfunctions lie below a level $z$. Our proofs borrows some techniques from the literature on stationary long memory processes; in particular, we expand the empirical measure into Hermite polynomials, and establish a uniform weak reduction principle, entailing that the asymptotic behaviour is asymptotically dominated by a single term in the expansion. As a result, we establish a functional central limit theorem; the limiting process is fully degenerate.
In recent years, considerable interest has been drawn by the analysis of geometric functionals for the excursion sets of random eigenfunctions on the unit sphere (spherical harmonics). In this paper, we extend those results to proper subsets of the sphere $\mathbb{S}^2$, i.e., spherical caps, focussing in particular on the excursion area. Precisely, we show that the asymptotic behavior of the excursion area is dominated by the so-called second-order chaos component, and we exploit this result to establish a Quantitative Central Limit Theorem, in the high energy limit. These results generalize …
In this paper, we investigate some geometric functionals for band limited Gaussian and isotropic spherical random fields in dimension 2. In particular, we focus on the area of excursion sets, providing its behavior in the high energy limit. Our result is based on Wiener chaos expansion for non linear transform of Gaussian fields and on an explicit derivation on the high-frequency limit of the covariance function of the field. As a simple corollary we establish also the Central Limit Theorem for the excursion area.
We prove Central Limit Theorems and Stein-like bounds for the asymptotic behaviour of nonlinear functionals of spherical Gaussian eigenfunctions. Our investigation combine asymptotic analysis of higher order moments for Legendre polynomials and, in addition, recent results on Malliavin calculus and Total Variation bounds for Gaussian subordinated fields. We discuss application to geometric functionals like the Defect and invariant statistics, e.g. polyspectra of isotropic spherical random fields. Both of these have relevance for applications, especially in an astrophysical environment.
We establish here a Quantitative Central Limit Theorem (in Wasserstein distance) for the Euler-Poincaré Characteristic of excursion sets of random spherical eigenfunctions in dimension 2. Our proof is based upon a decomposition of the Euler-Poincaré Characteristic into different Wiener-chaos components: we prove that its asymptotic behaviour is dominated by a single term, corresponding to the chaotic component of order two. As a consequence, we show how the asymptotic dependence on the threshold level $u$ is fully degenerate, i.e., the Euler-Poincaré Characteristic converges to a single random…
In this paper, we shall be concerned with geometric functionals and excursion probabilities for some nonlinear transforms evaluated on Fourier components of spherical random fields. In particular, we consider both random spherical harmonics and their smoothed averages, which can be viewed as random wavelet coefficients in the continuous case. For such fields, we consider smoothed polynomial transforms; we focus on the geometry of their excursion sets, and we study their asymptotic behaviour, in the high-frequency sense. We focus on the analysis of Euler-Poincaré characteristics, which can be e…
In this short survey we recollect some of the recent results on the high energy behavior (i.e., for diverging sequences of eigenvalues) of nonlinear functionals of Gaussian eigenfunctions on the $d$-dimensional sphere $\mathbb S^d$, $d\ge 2$. We present a quantitative Central Limit Theorem for a class of functionals whose Hermite rank is two, which includes in particular the empirical measure of excursion sets in the non-nodal case. Concerning the nodal case, we recall a CLT result for the defect on $\mathbb S^2$. The key tools are both, the asymptotic analysis of moments of all order for Gege…
A lot of efforts have been devoted in the last decade to the investigation of the high-frequency behaviour of geometric functionals for the excursion sets of random spherical harmonics, i.e., Gaussian eigenfunctions for the spherical Laplacian $Δ_{\mathbf{S}^2}$. In this survey we shall review some of these results, with particular reference to the asymptotic behaviour of variances, phase transitions in the nodal case (the \emph{Berry's Cancellation Phenomenon}), the distribution of the fluctuations around the expected values, and the asymptotic correlation among different functionals. We shal…
In the present survey we present some of the recent results concerning the geometry of nodal lines of random Gaussian eigenfunctions (in case of spectral degeneracies) or wavepackets and related issues. The most fundamental example, where the spectral degeneracy allows us to consider random eigenfunctions (i.e. endow the eigenspace with Gaussian probability measure), is the sphere, and the corresponding eigenspaces are the spaces of spherical harmonics; this model is the primary focus of the present survey. The list of results presented is, by no means, complete.
We consider a random Gaussian model of Laplace eigenfunctions on the hemisphere satisfying the Dirichlet boundary conditions along the equator. For this model we find a precise asymptotic law for the corresponding zero density functions, in both short range (around the boundary) and long range (far away from the boundary) regimes. As a corollary, we were able to find a logarithmic negative bias for the total nodal length of this ensemble relatively to the rotation invariant model of random spherical harmonics. Jean Bourgain's research, and his enthusiastic approach to the nodal geometry of Lap…
The Berry heuristic has been a long standing \emph{ansatz} about the high energy (i.e. large eigenvalues) behaviour of eigenfunctions (see Berry 1977). Roughly speaking, it states that under some generic boundary conditions, these eigenfunctions exhibit Gaussian behaviour when the eigenvalues grow to infinity. Our aim in this paper is to make this statement quantitative and to establish some rigorous bounds on the distance to Gaussianity, focussing on the hyperspherical case (i.e., for eigenfunctions of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on the normalized $d$-dimensional sphere - also known as sphe…
In this paper, we show that the Lipschitz-Killing Curvatures for the excursion sets of Arithmetic Random Waves (toral Gaussian eigenfunctions) are dominated, in the high-frequency regime, by a single chaotic component. The latter can be written as a simple explicit function of the threshold parameter times the centered norm of these random fields; as a consequence, these geometric functionals are fully correlated in the high-energy limit. The derived formulae show a clear analogy with related results on the round unit sphere and suggest the existence of a general formula for geometric function…
We prove a Central Limit Theorem for the Critical Points of Random Spherical Harmonics, in the High-Energy Limit. The result is a consequence of a deeper characterizations of the total number of critical points, which are shown to be asymptotically fully correlated with the sample trispectrum, i.e., the integral of the fourth Hermite polynomial evaluated on the eigenfunctions themselves. As a consequence, the total number of critical points and the nodal length are fully correlated for random spherical harmonics, in the high-energy limit.
Let M be a compact smooth manifold of dimension n with or without boundary, and f : M $\rightarrow$ R be a smooth Gaussian random field. It is very natural to suppose that for a large positive real u, the random excursion set {f $\ge$ u} is mostly composed of a union of disjoint topological n-balls. Using the constructive part of (stratified) Morse theory we prove that in average, this intuition is true, and provide for large u the asymptotic of the expected number of such balls, and so of connected components of {f $\ge$ u}, see Theorem 1.2. We similarly show that in average, the high nodal s…
We investigate the asymptotic behavior of the nodal lines for random spherical harmonics restricted to shrinking domains, in the 2-dimensional case: i.e., the length of the zero set $\mathcal{Z}_{\ell,r_\ell} := \mathcal{Z}^{B_{r_{\ell}}}(T_\ell)=\text{len}(\{x \in \mathbb{S}^2 \cap B_{r_\ell}: T_\ell(x)=0 \})$, where $B_{r_{\ell}}$ is the spherical cap of radius $r_\ell$. We show that the variance of the nodal length is logarithmic in the high energy limit; moreover, it is asymptotically fully equivalent, in the $L^2$-sense, to the "local sample trispectrum", namely, the integral on the ball …
In this paper, we investigate the variance of the nodal length for band-limited spherical random waves. When the frequency window includes a number of eigenfunctions that grows linearly, the variance of the nodal length is linear with respect to the frequency, while it is logarithmic when a single eigenfunction is considered. Then, it is natural to conjecture that there exists a smooth transition with respect to the number of eigenfunctions in the frequency window; however, we show here that the asymptotic variance is logarithmic whenever this number grows sublinearly, so that the window "shri…
In this survey we collect some recent results regarding the Lipschitz-Killing curvatures (LKCs) of the excursion sets of random eigenfunctions on the two-dimensional standard flat torus (arithmetic random waves) and on the two-dimensional unit sphere (random spherical harmonics). In particular, the aim of the present survey is to highlight the key role of integration by parts formulae in order to have an extremely neat expression for the random LKCs. Indeed, the main tool to study local geometric functionals of random waves on manifold is to exploit their Wiener chaos decomposition and show th…
We study nodal component count of the following Gaussian Laplace eigenfunctions: monochromatic random waves (MRW) on $\mathbb{R}^2$, arithmetic random waves (ARW) on $\mathbb{T}^2$ and random spherical harmonics (RSH) on $\mathbb{S}^2$. Exponential concentration for nodal component count of RSH on $\mathbb{S}^2$ and ARW on $\mathbb{T}^2$ were established by Nazarov-Sodin and Rozenshein respectively. We prove exponential concentration for nodal component count in the following three cases: MRW on growing Euclidean balls in $\mathbb{R}^2$; RSH and ARW on geodesic balls, in $\mathbb{S}^2$ and $\m…
We consider sequences of needlet random fields defined as weighted averaged forms of spherical Gaussian eigenfunctions. Our main result is a Central Limit Theorem in the high energy setting, for the boundary lengths of their excursion sets. This result is based on Stein-Malliavin techniques and Wiener chaos expansion for nonlinear functionals of random fields. To this end, a careful analysis of the variances of each chaotic component of the boundary length is carried out, showing that they are asymptotically constant, after normalisation, for all terms of the expansion and no leading component…
The main result of this paper is a bound on the distance between the distribution of an eigenfunction of the Laplacian on a compact Riemannian manifold and the Gaussian distribution. If $X$ is a random point on a manifold $M$ and $f$ is an eigenfunction of the Laplacian with $L^2$-norm one and eigenvalue $-μ$, then $$d_{TV}(f(X),Z)\le\frac{2}μ\E\big|\|\nabla f(X)\|^2-\E\|\nabla f(X) \|^2\big|.$$ This result is applied to construct specific examples of spherical harmonics of arbitrary (odd) degree which are close to Gaussian in distribution. A second application is given to random linear combin…
In this survey we collect some of the recent results on the "nodal geometry" of random eigenfunctions on Riemannian surfaces. We focus on the asymptotic behavior, for high energy levels, of the nodal length of Gaussian Laplace eigenfunctions on the torus (arithmetic random waves) and on the sphere (random spherical harmonics). We give some insight on both Berry's cancellation phenomenon and the nature of nodal length second order fluctuations (non-Gaussian on the torus and Gaussian on the sphere) in terms of chaotic components. Finally we consider the general case of monochromatic random waves…
This paper provides quantitative Central Limit Theorems for nonlinear transforms of spherical random fields, in the high frequency limit. The sequences of fields that we consider are represented as smoothed averages of spherical Gaussian eigenfunctions and can be viewed as random coefficients from continuous wavelets/needlets; as such, they are of immediate interest for spherical data analysis. In particular, we focus on so-called needlets polyspectra, which are popular tools for nonGaussianity analysis in the astrophysical community, and on the area of excursion sets. Our results are based on…
The investigation of the behaviour for geometric functionals of random fields on manifolds has drawn recently considerable attention. In this paper, we extend this framework by considering fluctuations over time for the level curves of general isotropic Gaussian spherical random fields. We focus on both long and short memory assumptions; in the former case, we show that the fluctuations of $u$-level curves are dominated by a single component, corresponding to a second-order chaos evaluated on a subset of the multipole components for the random field. We prove the existence of cancellation poin…
