The one-shot classical capacity of a quantum channel quantifies the amount of classical information that can be transmitted through a single use of the channel such that the error probability is below a certain threshold. In this work, we show that this capacity is well approximated by a relative-entropy-type measure defined via hypothesis testing. Combined with a quantum version of Stein's lemma, our results give a conceptually simple proof of the well-known Holevo-Schumacher-Westmoreland theorem for the capacity of memoryless channels. More generally, we obtain tight capacity formulas for arbitrary (not necessarily memoryless) channels.
In this work we study the problem of communication over the quantum wiretap channel. For this channel there are three parties Alice (sender), Bob (legitimate receiver) and Eve (eavesdropper). We obtain upper and lower bounds on the amount of information Alice can communicate to Bob such that Eve gets to know as little information as possible about the transmitted messages. Our bounds are in terms of quantum hypothesis testing divergence and smooth max quantum relative entropy. To obtain our result we prove a one-shot version of the quantum covering lemma along with operator Chernoff bound for …
We use the smooth entropy approach to treat the problems of binary quantum hypothesis testing and the transmission of classical information through a quantum channel. We provide lower and upper bounds on the optimal type II error of quantum hypothesis testing in terms of the smooth max-relative entropy of the two states representing the two hypotheses. Using then a relative entropy version of the Quantum Asymptotic Equipartition Property (QAEP), we can recover the strong converse rate of the i.i.d. hypothesis testing problem in the asymptotics. On the other hand, combining Stein's lemma with o…
One of the main figures of merit for quantum memories and quantum communication devices is their quantum capacity. It has been studied for arbitrary kinds of quantum channels, but its practical estimation has so far been limited to devices that implement independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) quantum channels, where each qubit is affected by the same noise process. Real devices, however, typically exhibit correlated errors. Here, we overcome this limitation by presenting protocols that estimate a channel's one-shot quantum capacity for the case where the device acts on (an arbitrary …
We study optimal rates for quantum communication over a single use of a channel, which itself can correspond to a finite number of uses of a channel with arbitrarily correlated noise. The corresponding capacity is often referred to as the one-shot quantum capacity. In this paper, we prove bounds on the one-shot quantum capacity of an arbitrary channel. This allows us to compute the quantum capacity of a channel with arbitrarily correlated noise, in the limit of asymptotically many uses of the channel. In the memoryless case, we explicitly show that our results reduce to known expressions for t…
We show that unbounded number of channel uses may be necessary for perfect transmission of quantum information. For any n we explicitly construct low-dimensional quantum channels ($d_A$=4, $d_E$=2 or 4) whose quantum zero-error capacity is positive but the corresponding n-shot capacity is zero. We give estimates for quantum zero-error capacity of such channels (as a function of n) and show that these channels can be chosen in any small vicinity (in the cb-norm) of a classical-quantum channel. Mathematically, this property means appearance of an ideal (noiseless) subchannel only in sufficiently…
The property of the optimal signal ensembles of entanglement assisted channel capacity is studied. A relationship between entanglement assisted channel capacity and one-shot capacity of unassisted channel is obtained. The data processing inequalities, convexity and additivity of the entanglement assisted channel capacity are reformulated by simple methods.
The bosonic quantum channels have recently attracted a growing interest, motivated by the hope that they open a tractable approach to the generally hard problem of evaluating quantum channel capacities. These studies, however, have always been restricted to memoryless channels. Here, it is shown that the classical capacity of a bosonic Gaussian channel with memory can be significantly enhanced if entangled symbols are used instead of product symbols. For example, the capacity of a photonic channel with 70%-correlated thermal noise of one third the shot noise is enhanced by about 11% when using…
A direct proof of the relation between the one-shot classical capacity and the minimal output entropy for covariant quantum channels is suggested. The structure of covariant channels is described in some detail. A simple proof of a general inequality for entanglement-assisted classical capacity is given.
Quantum entropy inequalities are studied. Some quantum entropy inequalities are obtained by several methods. For entanglement breaking channel, we show that the entanglement-assisted classical capacity is upper bounded by $\log d$. A relationship between entanglement-assisted and one-shot unassisted capacities is obtained. This relationship shows the entanglement-assisted channel capacity is upper bounded by the sum of $\log d$ and the one-shot unassisted classical capacity.
Duan and Winter studied the one-shot zero-error classical capacity of a quantum channel assisted by quantum non-signalling correlations, and formulated this problem as a semidefinite program depending only on the Kraus operator space of the channel. For the class of classical-quantum channels, they showed that the asymptotic zero-error classical capacity assisted by quantum non-signalling correlations, minimized over all classical-quantum channels with a confusability graph $G$, is exactly $\log \vartheta(G)$, where $\vartheta(G)$ is the celebrated Lovász theta function. In this paper, we show…
Quantum error correction (QEC) is one of the central concepts in quantum information science and also has wide applications in fundamental physics. The capacity theorems provide solid foundations of QEC. We here provide a general and highly applicable form of capacity theorem for both classical and quantum information, i.e., hybrid information, with assistance of a limited resource of entanglement in one-shot scenario, which covers broader situations than the existing ones. Harnessing the wide applicability of the theorem, we show that a demonstration of QEC by short random quantum circuits is…
In the present paper we give proof that the information-transmission capacity of the approximate position measurement with the oscillator energy constraint, which underlies noisy Gaussian homodyning in quantum optics, is attained on Gaussian encoding. The proof is based on general principles of convex programming. Rather remarkably, for this particular model the method reduces the solution of the optimization problem to a generalization of the celebrated log-Sobolev inequality. We hope that this method should work also for other models lying out of the scope of the "threshold condition" ensuri…
We begin with a detailed description of a low dimensional quantum channel ($d_A=4, d_E=3$) demonstrating the symmetric form of superactivation of one-shot zero-error quantum capacity. This means appearance of a noiseless (perfectly reversible) subchannel in the tensor square of a channel having no noiseless subchannels. Then we describe a quantum channel $Φ$ such that $\,\bar{Q}_0(Φ)=0$ and $\,\bar{Q}_0(Φ\otimesΦ)\geq\log n\,$ for any $\,n\leq+\infty$. We also show that the superactivation of one-shot zero-error quantum capacity of a channel can be reformulated in terms of quantum measurements…
The quantum capacity of thermal noise channel is studied. The extremal input state is obtained at the postulation that the coherent information is convex or concave at its vicinity. When the input energy tends to infinitive, it is verified by perturbation theory that the coherent information reaches its maximum at the product of identical thermal state input. The quantum capacity is obtained for lower noise channel and it is equal the one shot capacity.
The capacity of a classical-quantum channel (or in other words the classical capacity of a quantum channel) is considered in the most general setting, where no structural assumptions such as the stationary memoryless property are made on a channel. A capacity formula as well as a characterization of the strong converse property is given just in parallel with the corresponding classical results of Verdú-Han which are based on the so-called information-spectrum method. The general results are applied to the stationary memoryless case with or without cost constraint on inputs, whereby a deep rela…
We investigate the classical communication over quantum channels when assisted by no-signaling (NS) and positive-partial-transpose-preserving (PPT) codes, for which both the optimal success probability of a given transmission rate and the one-shot $ε$-error capacity are formalized as semidefinite programs (SDPs). Based on this, we obtain improved SDP finite blocklength converse bounds of general quantum channels for entanglement-assisted codes and unassisted codes. Furthermore, we derive two SDP strong converse bounds for the classical capacity of general quantum channels: for any code with a …
The corrected capacity of a quantum channel is defined as the best one-shot capacity that can be obtained by measuring the environment and using the result to correct the output of the channel. It is shown that (i) all qubit channels have corrected capacity log 2, (ii) a product of N qubit channels has corrected capacity N log 2, and (iii) all channels have corrected capacity at least log 2. The question is posed of finding the channel with smallest corrected capacity in any dimension d.
A fundamental problem in resource theory is to study the manipulation of the resource. Focusing on a general dynamical resource theory of quantum channels, here we consider tasks of one-shot resource distillation and dilution with a single copy of the resource. For any target of unitary channel or pure state preparation channel, we establish a universal strategy to determine upper and lower bounds on rates that convert between any given resource and the target. We show that the rates are related to resource measures based on the channel robustness and the channel hypothesis testing entropy, wi…
We study the communication capabilities of a quantum channel under the most general channel model known as the one-shot model. Unlike classical channels that can only be used to transmit classical information (bits), a quantum channel can be used for transmission of classical information, quantum information (qubits) and simultaneous transmission of classical and quantum information. In this work, we investigate the one-shot capabilities of a quantum channel for simultaneously transmitting of bits and qubits. This problem was studied in the asymptotic regime for a memoryless channel and a regu…
We study the performance of a partially correlated amplitude damping channel acting on two qubits. We derive lower bounds for the single-shot classical capacity by studying two kinds of quantum ensembles, one which allows to maximize the Holevo quantity for the memoryless channel and the other allowing the same task but for the full-memory channel. In these two cases, we also show the amount of entanglement which is involved in achieving the maximum of the Holevo quantity. For the single-shot quantum capacity we discuss both a lower and an upper bound, achieving a good estimate for high values…
We show how to compute or at least to estimate various capacity-related quantities for Bosonic Gaussian channels. Among these are the coherent information, the entanglement assisted classical capacity, the one-shot classical capacity, and a new quantity involving the transpose operation, shown to be a general upper bound on the quantum capacity, even allowing for finite errors. All bounds are explicitly evaluated for the case of a one-mode channel with attenuation/amplification and classical noise.
Capacity of a quantum channel characterizes the limits of reliable communication through a noisy quantum channel. This fundamental information theoretic question is very well studied specially in the setting of many independent uses of the channel. An important scenario, both from practical and conceptual point of view, is when the channel can be used only once. This is known as the one-shot channel coding problem. We provide a tight characterization of the one-shot entanglement assisted classical capacity of a quantum channel. We arrive at our result by introducing a simple decoding technique…
The Quantum Reverse Shannon Theorem states that any quantum channel can be simulated by an unlimited amount of shared entanglement and an amount of classical communication equal to the channel's entanglement assisted classical capacity. In this paper, we provide a new proof of this theorem, which has previously been proved by Bennett, Devetak, Harrow, Shor, and Winter. Our proof has a clear structure being based on two recent information-theoretic results: one-shot Quantum State Merging and the Post-Selection Technique for quantum channels.
In this paper, we explicitly evaluate the one-shot quantum non-signalling assisted zero-error classical capacities $\M_0^{\mathrm{QNS}}$ for qubit channels. In particular, we show that for nonunital qubit channels, $\M_0^{\mathrm{QNS}}=1$, which implies that in the one-shot setting, nonunital qubit channels cannot transmit any information with zero probability of error even when assisted by quantum non-signalling correlations. Furthermore, we show that for qubit channels, $\M_0^{\mathrm{QNS}}$ equals to the one-shot entanglement-assisted zero-error classical capacities. This means that for a s…
We analyze a task in which classical and quantum messages are simultaneously communicated via a noisy quantum channel, assisted with a limited amount of shared entanglement. We derive direct and converse bounds for the one-shot capacity region, represented by the smooth conditional entropies and the error tolerance. The proof is based on the randomized partial decoupling theorem, which is a generalization of the decoupling theorem. The two bounds match in the asymptotic limit of infinitely many uses of a memoryless channel and coincide with the previous result obtained by Hsieh and Wilde. Dire…
For a quantum channel with additive Gaussian quantum noise, at the large input energy side, we prove that the one shot capacity is achieved by the thermal noise state for all Gaussian state inputs, it is also true for non-Gaussian input in the sense of first order perturbation. For a general case of $n$ copies input, we show that up to first order perturbation, any non-Gaussian perturbation to the product thermal state input has a less quantum information transmission rate when the input energy tend to infinitive.
We study information transmission over a fully correlated amplitude damping channel acting on two qubits. We derive the single-shot classical channel capacity and show that entanglement is needed to achieve the channel best performance. We discuss the degradability properties of the channel and evaluate the quantum capacity for any value of the noise parameter. We finally compute the entanglement-assisted classical channel capacity.
We consider the problem of quantum measurement compression with side information in the one-shot setting with shared randomness. In this problem, Alice shares a pure state with Reference and Bob and she performs a measurement on her registers. She wishes to communicate the outcome of this measurement to Bob using shared randomness and classical communication, in such a way that the outcome that Bob receives is correctly correlated with Reference and Bob's own registers. Our goal is to simultaneously minimize the classical communication and randomness cost. We provide a protocol based on convex…
We characterize the distillation of quantum coherence in the one-shot setting, that is, the conversion of general quantum states into maximally coherent states under different classes of quantum operations. We show that the maximally incoherent operations (MIO) and the dephasing-covariant incoherent operations (DIO) have the same power in the task of one-shot coherence distillation. We establish that the one-shot distillable coherence under MIO and DIO is efficiently computable with a semidefinite program, which we show to correspond to a quantum hypothesis testing problem. Further, we introdu…
One-shot information theory entertains a plethora of entropic quantities, such as the smooth max-divergence, hypothesis testing divergence and information spectrum divergence, that characterize various operational tasks and are used to prove the asymptotic behavior of various tasks in quantum information theory. Tight inequalities between these quantities are thus of immediate interest. In this note we use a minimax approach (appearing previously for example in the proofs of the quantum substate theorem), to simplify the quantum problem to a commutative one, which allows us to derive such ineq…
Neural networks have proven to be efficient for a number of practical applications ranging from image recognition to identifying phase transitions in quantum physics models. In this paper we investigate the application of neural networks to state classification in a single-shot quantum measurement. We use dispersive readout of a superconducting transmon circuit to demonstrate an increase in assignment fidelity for both two and three state classification. More importantly, our method is ready for on-the-fly data processing without overhead or need for large data transfer to a hard drive. In add…
Quantum information theory sets the ultimate limits for any information-processing task. In rangefinding and LIDAR, the presence or absence of a target can be tested by detecting different states at the receiver. In this Letter, we use quantum hypothesis testing for an unknown coherent-state return signal in order to derive the limits of symmetric and asymmetric error probabilities of single-shot ranging experiments. We engineer a single measurement independent of the range, which in some cases saturates the quantum bound and for others is presumably the best measurement to approach it. In add…
A fundamental approach for the characterization and quantification of all kinds of resources is to study the conversion between different resource objects under certain constraints. Here we analyze, from a resource-non-specific standpoint, the optimal efficiency of resource formation and distillation tasks with only a single copy of the given quantum state, thereby establishing a unified framework of one-shot quantum resource manipulation. We find general bounds on the optimal rates characterized by resource measures based on the smooth max/min-relative entropies and hypothesis testing relativ…

Recently the power of positive partial transpose preserving (PPTp) and no-signalling (NS) codes in quantum communication has been studied. We continue with this line of research and show that the NS/PPTp/NS$\cap$PPTp codes assisted zero-error quantum capacity depends only on the non-commutative bipartite graph of the channel and the one-shot case can be computed efficiently by semidefinite programming (SDP). As an example, the activated PPTp codes assisted zero-error quantum capacity is carefully studied. We then present a general SDP upper bound $Q_Γ$ of quantum capacity and show it is always…
We show that the dynamic resource theory of quantum entanglement can be formulated using the superchannel theory. In this formulation, we identify the separable channels and the class of free superchannels that preserve channel separability as free resources, and choose the swap channels as dynamic entanglement golden units. Our first result is that the one-shot dynamic entanglement cost of a bipartite quantum channel under the free superchannels is bounded by the standard log-robustness of channels. The one-shot distillable dynamic entanglement of a bipartite quantum channel under the free su…
We study the problem of communication over a compound quantum channel in the presence of entanglement. Classically such channels are modeled as a collection of conditional probability distributions wherein neither the sender nor the receiver is aware of the channel being used for transmission, except for the fact that it belongs to this collection. We provide near optimal achievability and converse bounds for this problem in the one-shot quantum setting in terms of quantum hypothesis testing divergence. We also consider the case of informed sender, showing a one-shot achievability result that …
We study the problem of entanglement-assisted quantum state redistribution in the one-shot setting and provide a new achievability result on the quantum communication required. Our bounds are in terms of the max-relative entropy and the hypothesis testing relative entropy. We use the techniques of convex split and position-based decoding to arrive at our result. We show that our result is upper bounded by the result obtained in Berta, Christandl, Touchette (2016).
We consider the problem of entanglement-assisted one-shot classical communication. In the zero-error regime, entanglement can increase the one-shot zero-error capacity of a family of classical channels following the strategy of Cubitt et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 104, 230503 (2010). This strategy uses the Kochen-Specker theorem which is applicable only to projective measurements. As such, in the regime of noisy states and/or measurements, this strategy cannot increase the capacity. To accommodate generically noisy situations, we examine the one-shot success probability of sending a fixed number of…
We introduce two generalizations of Kochen-Specker (KS) sets: projective KS sets and generalized KS sets. We then use projective KS sets to characterize all graphs for which the chromatic number is strictly larger than the quantum chromatic number. Here, the quantum chromatic number is defined via a nonlocal game based on graph coloring. We further show that from any graph with separation between these two quantities, one can construct a classical channel for which entanglement assistance increases the one-shot zero-error capacity. As an example, we exhibit a new family of classical channels w…
The resource framework of quantum coherence was introduced by Baumgratz, Cramer and Plenio [PRL 113, 140401 (2014)] and further developed by Winter and Yang [PRL 116, 120404 (2016)]. We consider the one-shot problem of distilling pure coherence from a single instance of a given resource state. Specifically, we determine the distillable coherence with a given fidelity under incoherent operations (IO) through a generalisation of the Winter-Yang protocol. This is compared to the distillable coherence under maximal incoherent operations (MIO) and dephasing-covariant incoherent operations (DIO), wh…
When classical information is sent over a quantum channel, attaining the ultimate limit to channel capacity requires the receiver to make joint measurements over long codeword blocks. For a pure-state channel, we construct a receiver that can attain the ultimate capacity by applying a single-shot unitary transformation on the received quantum codeword followed by simultaneous (but separable) projective measurements on the single-modulation-symbol state spaces. We study the ultimate limits of photon-information-efficient communications on a lossy bosonic channel. Based on our general results fo…
In this work, we study the tradeoffs between the error probabilities of classical-quantum channels and the blocklength $n$ when the transmission rates approach the channel capacity at a rate slower than $1/\sqrt{n}$, a research topic known as moderate deviation analysis. We show that the optimal error probability vanishes under this rate convergence. Our main technical contributions are a tight quantum sphere-packing bound, obtained via Chaganty and Sethuraman's concentration inequality in strong large deviation theory, and asymptotic expansions of error-exponent functions. Moderate deviation …
We study the problem of designing optical receivers to discriminate between multiple coherent states using coherent processing receivers---i.e., one that uses arbitrary coherent feedback control and quantum-noise-limited direct detection---which was shown by Dolinar to achieve the minimum error probability in discriminating any two coherent states. We first derive and re-interpret Dolinar's binary-hypothesis minimum-probability-of-error receiver as the one that optimizes the information efficiency at each time instant, based on recursive Bayesian updates within the receiver. Using this viewpoi…
A unified approach to prove the converses for the quantum channel capacity theorems is presented. These converses include the strong converse theorems for classical or quantum information transfer with error exponents and novel explicit upper bounds on the fidelity measures reminiscent of the Wolfowitz strong converse for the classical channel capacity theorems. We provide a new proof for the error exponents for the classical information transfer. A long standing problem in quantum information theory has been to find out the strong converse for the channel capacity theorem when quantum informa…
