We reinvestigate the dilaton coupling in the string theory, which comes from a wrapped membrane. The ghost number anomaly associated with the string worldsheet diffeomorphism is shown to induce the dilaton coupling.
A model where a Dirac fermion is coupled to background dilaton field is considered to study s-wave scattering of fermion by a background dilaton black hole. It is found that the anomaly plays a dual role on information loss scenario. Some time it protects the fermion from the dangerous information loss problem and some times it itself through it up towards that danger.
We study the condition for the dilaton stabilization in Type IIB flux compactifications consistent with the KKLT scenario. Since the Gukov-Vafa-Witten superpotential depends linearly on the dilaton, the dilaton mass squared is given by a sum of the gravitino mass squared and additional terms determined by the complex structure moduli stabilization. If the dilaton mass is not much enhanced from the gravitino mass, the mass mixing with the Kähler modulus in the presence of the non-perturbative effect generates the saddle point at the supersymmetric field values, hence the potential becomes unsta…
Dilatation, i.e. scale, symmetry in the presence of the dilaton in Minkowski space is derived from diffeomorphism symmetry in curved spacetime, incorporating the volume-preserving diffeomorphisms. The conditions for scale invariance are derived and their relation to conformal invariance is examined. In the presence of the dilaton scale invariance automatically guarantees conformal invariance due to diffeomorphism symmetry. Low energy scale-invariant phenomenological Lagrangians are derived in terms of dilaton-dressed fields, which are identified as the fields satisfying the usual scaling prope…
A model where a Dirac fermion is coupled to background dilaton field is considered to study s-wave scattering of fermion by a back ground dilaton black hole. It is found that an uncomfortable situation towards information loss scenario arises when one loop correction gets involved during bosonization.
We investigate on a Randall-Sundrum warped spacetime, a Kerr-like black hole in the conformal dilaton-Higgs $(ω,Φ)$ gravity model. We applied the antipodal boundary condition on the Klein surface using the $\mathds{Z}_2$-symmetry in the "large" (bulk) extra dimension. It turns out that the pseudo-Riemannian 5D manifold can be written as an effective 4D Riemannian brane spacetime, $\mathds{R}^2_+\times\mathds{R}^1\times S^1$, where $\mathds{R}^2_+$ is conformally flat. The solution in valid on both manifolds. So the solution can equally well described by an instanton solution. An advantage is t…
In particle physics and cosmology, the dilaton is an hypothetical scalar field which can explain many physical phenomena. In this framework, we investigate an extended lagrangian of QCD which involves dilatonic degrees of freedom. Our approach is based on the relationship between the massive dilaton and the nonperturbative effects of QCD. We derive a general axion potential involving the dilaton properties and vacuum condensates.
It is pointed out that string-loop modifications of the low-energy matter couplings of the dilaton may provide a mechanism for fixing the vacuum expectation value of a massless dilaton in a way which is naturally compatible with existing experimental data. Under a certain assumption of universality of the dilaton coupling functions , the cosmological evolution of the graviton-dilaton-matter system is shown to drive the dilaton towards values where it decouples from matter (``Least Coupling Principle"). Quantitative estimates are given of the residual strength, at the present cosmological epoch…
We extend the previous analysis of (locally) asymptotically flat solutions of Kaluza-Klein (KK) theory by assuming that the dilaton charge is an independent parameter. This corresponds to a general nondegenerate matrix of charges within the geodesic sigma model approach and comes into contact with singular solutions of the four-dimensional Einstein-scalar theory. New features of the degenerate class of solutions, which includes regular KK black holes, are also revealed. Solving the constraint equation, we find three distinct branches of the dilaton charge as a function of the other asymptotic …
Two models of dilatonic gravity are investigated: (i) dilaton-Yang-Mills gravity and (ii) higher-derivative dilatonic gravity. Both are renormalizable in $2+ε$ dimensions and have a smooth limit for $ε\rightarrow 0$. The corresponding one-loop effective actions and beta-functions are found. Both theories are shown to possess a non-trivial ultraviolet fixed point ---for all dilatonic couplings--- in which the gravitational constant is asymptotically free. It is shown that in the regime of asymptotic freedom the matter central charge can be significantly increased by two different mechanisms ---…
We perform a complete integration of the Einstein-dilaton-antisymmetric form action describing black p-branes in arbitrary dimensions assuming the transverse space to be homogeneous and possessing spherical, toroidal or hyperbolic topology. The generic solution contains eight parameters satisfying one constraint. Asymptotically flat solutions form a five-parametric subspace, while conditions of regularity of the non-degenerate event horizon further restrict this number to three, which can be related to the mass and the charge densities and the asymptotic value of the dilaton. In the case of a …
We propose the supersymmetric extension of the modified Born-Infeld-axion-dilaton non-linear electrodynamics that has confined static abelian solutions used for describing the electromagnetic confinement in the presence of axion and dilaton fields, and charged matter. The supersymmetric extension also has the non-trivial scalar potential that implies the upper bounds on the matter fields.
The gauge-fixed action of a `spacetime-filling' D3-brane with dilaton-axion coupling is formulated in N=1 superspace. We investigate its symmetries by paying special attention to a possible non-linearly realized extra (hidden) supersymmetry, and emphasize the need of a linear superfield coupled to an abelian Chern-Simons superfield to represent a dilaton-axion supermultiplet in the off-shell manifestly supersymmetric approach.
In this work we show that the Universe evolving in a spacetime with torsion (originated from a second rank antisymmetric Kalb-Ramond field) and dilaton is free from any big bang singularity and can have acceleration during the evolution. Both the matter and radiation dominated era have been considered and the role of the dilaton to explain the decelerating phase in the earlier epoch has also been discussed.
We show that there are two classes of solutions that describe static spherically symmetric dyonic dilaton black holes with two nonsingular horizons. The first class includes only the already known solutions that exist for a few special values of the dilaton coupling constant. Solutions belonging to the second class have essentially different properties. They exist for continuously varying values of the dilaton coupling constant, but arise only for discrete values of the dilaton field at the horizon. For each given value of the dilaton coupling constant, there may exist several such solutions d…
We consider 4D quantum gravity with N-dilatons with the most general couplings. Especially, on constant dilaton and arbitrary metric background, we show the structure of the divergent terms. We show the constraint between the couplings necessary to cancel the coefficient of the square of the Wyle tensor. Next we show the N dependence of a non-renormalizable divergent term, and found that it cannot be canceled in the case of $N \geq 1$ with any fine-tuning of the couplings.
We studied the influence of dilaton field on the dynamical collapse of a charged scalar one. Different values of the initial amplitude of dilaton field as well as the altered values of the dilatonic coupling constant were considered. We described structures of spacetimes and properties of black holes emerging from the collapse of electrically charged scalar field in dilaton gravity. Moreover, we provided a meaningful comparison of the collapse in question with the one in Einstein gravity, when dilaton field is absent and its coupling with the scalar field is equal to zero. The course and resul…
After a review of theoretical motivations to consider theories with direct couplings of scalar fields to Ricci and gauge curvature terms, we consider the dynamics and non-perturbative stabilization of a dilaton in three and in four dimensions. In particular, we derive generalized Coulomb potentials in the presence of a dilaton and discuss a low energy effective dilaton potential induced by instanton effects and the S--dual coupling to axions. We conclude with a discussion of cosmological implications of a light dilaton.
Quantum theory of dilaton gravity coupled to a nonlinear sigma model with a maximally symmetric target space is studied in $2+ε$ dimensions. The ultraviolet stable fixed point for the curvature of the nonlinear sigma model demands a new fixed point theory for the dilaton coupling function. The fixed point of the dilaton coupling is a saddle point similarly to the previous case of the flat target space.
We investigate the high and low energy scattering of charged scalar waves from an extreme dilaton black hole (DBH). The analyses here correspond to forward scattering processes of two charged scalar particles with dilaton coupling under a certain extreme condition. We calculate the scattering amplitude and compare it with the known results obtained by other methods. We also discuss the case of incoming wave with a general charge and dilaton coupling.
Gravitational couplings in bulk space-time include those terms which are fixed by scattering amplitude of strings and ambiguous terms that are coming from the field redefinitions. These field redefinitions can be fixed in the bulk by ghost-free condition. In this paper we have revised the effective gravitational couplings on D-branes by including the field redefinitions. We find the gravitational effective action up to $α'^2$-order.
String theory on D-brane backgrounds is open-closed string theory. Given the relevance of this fact, we give details and elaborate upon our earlier construction of oriented open-closed string field theory. In order to incorporate explicitly closed strings, the classical sector of this theory is open strings with a homotopy associative A_\infty algebraic structure. We build a suitable Batalin-Vilkovisky algebra on moduli spaces of bordered Riemann surfaces, the construction of which involves a few subtleties arising from the open string punctures and cyclicity conditions. All vertices coupling …
A new approach is provided to determine the dilaton--antisymmetric tensor coupling in a supergravity theory by considering the static supersymmetric field configuration around a super extended object, which is consistently formulated in a curved superspace. By this, the corresponding SUSY transformation rules can also be determined for vanishing fermionic fields as well as bosonic fields other than those in the determined coupling. Therefore, we can, in turn, use this determined part of the supergravity theory to study all the related vacuum-like solutions. We have determined the dilaton--anti…
In this paper, we present the metric for the $n$-dimensional charged slowly rotating dilaton black hole with $N = [(n -1)/2]$ independent rotation parameters, associated with $N$ orthogonal planes of rotation in the background of asymptotically flat and asymptotically (anti)-de Sitter spacetime. The mass, angular momentum and the gyromagnetic ratio of such a black hole are determined for the arbitrary values of the dilaton coupling constant. We find that the gyromagnetic ratio crucially depends on the dilaton coupling constant, $α$, and decreases with increasing $α$ in any dimension.
We study the graceful exit problem and the role of the stress-energy-momentum tensors in the two-dimensional string cosmology. The one-loop quantum correction of conformal fields is incorporated in the arbitrary large $N$ limit to ensure exact quantum solvability. The only solution which gives the bounded curvature with the asymptotic flatness is restricted to the first branch under some conditions. However, even in this case, the accelerating expansion is forever. We show that the only nonvanishing quantum stress-momentum tensor is the pressure part($T_{xx}$) which is of relevance to the dyna…
We analyze the interaction between the massless RR states with a dilaton in a type IIB superstring. By constructing vertex operators for massless and massive RR states and computing their correlation functions with a dilaton we find the Ramond-Ramond part of the superstring low-energy effective action. The RR terms appearing in the action do not contain the standard dilatonic factor (string coupling constant). The geometrical interpretation of this fact is presented. Namely we argue that the spin operators in the RR vertices effectively decrease the Euler character of the worldsheet by 1 unit.…
We investigate extremal charged black hole solutions in the four-dimensional string frame Gauss-Bonnet gravity with the Maxwell field and the dilaton. Without curvature corrections, the extremal electrically charged dilatonic black holes have singular horizon and zero Bekenstein entropy. When the Gauss-Bonnet term is switched on, the horizon radius expands to a finite value provided curvature corrections are strong enough. Below a certain threshold value of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling the extremal black hole solutions cease to exist. Since decreasing Gauss-Bonnet coupling corresponds to decreasi…
The Riemann curvature correction to the type II supergravity at eight-derivative level is given schematically as $(t_8t_8+{1}{8}\eps_{10}\eps_{10})R^4$ at tree-level. The replacement of the generalized Riemann curvature in $t_8t_8R^4$, proposed by Gross and Sloan, produces various NS-NS couplings which are invariant under T-duality. Recently, using the combination of S-duality and T-duality transformations on these couplings, we have found groups of couplings which are invariant under the S-duality transformation. In this paper, we have examined the couplings involving the dilaton with direct …
We construct the colliding plane wave solutions in the higher-dimensional gravity theory with fluxes and dilaton, with a more general ansatz on the metric. We consider two classes of solutions to the equations of motions and after imposing the junction conditions we find that they are all physically acceptable. In particular, we manage to obtain the higher-dimensional Bell-Szekeres solutions in the Maxwell-Einstein gravity theory, and the flux-CPW solutions in the eleven-dimensional supergravity theory. All the solutions have been shown to develop the late time curvature singularity.
Using field redefinitions and Bianchi identities on the general form of the effective action for metric, $B$-field and dilaton, we have found that the minimum number of independent couplings at order $α'^2$ is 60. We write these couplings in two different schemes in the string frame. In the first scheme, each coupling does not include terms with more than two derivatives and it does not include structures $R,\,R_{μν},\,\nabla_μH^{μαβ}$, $ \nabla_μ\nabla^μΦ$. In this scheme, 20 couplings which are the minimum number of couplings for metric and $B$-field, include dilaton trivially as the overall…
A general free differential algebra encoding the anti-Higgs mechanism among two-index antisymmetric tensors and gauge vectors is analyzed at the full group theoretical level. N=2 supergravity in five dimensions coupled to tensor, vector and hyper multiplets with all possible couplings included is reconsidered from this point of view. Within our approach, we find that some of the constraints on the couplings usually considered are too stringent and may in fact be relaxed. This generalization also affects the scalar potential.
The Riemann curvature correction to the type II supergravity at eight-derivative level in string frame is given as e^{-2ϕ}(t_8t_8R^4+\frac{1}{4}\eps_{8}\eps_{8}R^4). For constant dilaton, it has been extended in the literature to the S-duality invariant form by extending the dilaton factor in the Einstein frame to the non-holomorphic Eisenstein series. For non-constant dilaton, however, there are various couplings in the Einstein frame which are not consistent with the S-duality. By constructing the tensors $t_{2n}$ from Born-Infeld action, we include the appropriate Ricci and scalar curvature…
Dilaton contact terms in the bosonic and heterotic strings are examined following the recent work of Distler and Nelson on the bosonic and semirigid strings. In the bosonic case dilaton two-point functions on the sphere are calculated as a stepping stone to constructing a `good' coordinate family for dilaton calculations on higher genus surfaces. It is found that dilaton-dilaton contact terms are improperly normalized, suggesting that the interpretation of the dilaton as the first variation of string coupling breaks down when other dilatons are present. It seems likely that this can be attribu…
In general bosonic closed string backgrounds the ghost-dilaton is not the only state in the semi-relative BRST cohomology that can change the dimensionless string coupling. This fact is used to establish complete dilaton theorems in closed string field theory. The ghost-dilaton, however, is the crucial state: for backgrounds where it becomes BRST trivial we prove that the string coupling becomes an unobservable parameter of the string action. For backgrounds where the matter CFT includes free uncompactified bosons we introduce a refined BRST problem by including the zero-modes "x" of the boson…
Using the renormalization-group formalism, a sigma model of a special type- in which the metric and the dilaton depend explicitly on one of the string coordinates only-is investigated near two dimensions. It is seen that dilatonic gravity coupled to N scalar fields can be expressed in this form, using a string parametrization, and that it possesses the usual UV fixed point. However,in this stringy parametrization of the theory the fixed point for the scalar-dilaton coupling turns out to be trivial, while the fixed point for the gravitational coupling remains to be the same as in previous studi…
We show that introducing $R^2$-term makes the Higgs-inflation and Higgs-dilaton inflation consistent models: the strong coupling energy scales in scalar, gauge and gravity sectors all are lifted up to the Planck scale.
A generalization of Born-Infeld non-linear vacuum electrodynamics involving axion and dilaton fields is constructed with couplings dictated by electromagnetic duality and SL(2,R) symmetries in the weak field limit. Besides the Newtonian gravitational constant the model contains a single fundamental coupling parameter b0. In the absence of axion and dilaton interactions it reduces, in the limit as b0 tends to infinity, to Maxwell's linear vacuum theory while for finite b0 it reduces to the original Born-Infeld model. The spherically symmetric static sector of the theory is explored in a backgro…
In the context of dilaton coupled Einstein gravity with a negative cosmological constant and a Born-Infeld field, we study heat engines where charged black hole is the working substance. Using the existence of a notion of thermodynamic mass and volume (which depend on the dilaton coupling), the mechanical work takes place via the pdV terms present in the first law of extended gravitational thermodynamics. Efficiency is analyzed as a function of dilaton and Born-Infeld couplings, and results are compared with analogous computations in the related conformal solutions in the Brans-Dicke Born-Infe…
The classical probe dynamics of the eleven-dimensional massless superparticles in the background geometry produced by N source M-momenta is investigated in the framework of N-sector DLCQ supergravity. We expand the probe action up to the two fermion terms and find that the fermionic contributions are the spin-orbit couplings, which precisely agree with the matrix theory calculations. We comment on the lack of non-perturbative corrections in the one-loop matrix quantum mechanics effective action and its compatibility with the supergravity analysis.
We construct some examples of analytic solutions of the low energy (i.e. tree-level) string cosmological effective action. We work with the ``minimal'' field content (i.e. graviton and dilaton) in the absence of any dilaton potential. Provided the metric is sufficiently inhomogeneous we find solutions whose curvature invariants are bounded and everywhere defined in time and space. The dilaton coupling and its associated energy density are regular and homogeneous. A phase of growing (and non-singular) dilaton coupling compatible with the regularity of the curvature invariants without the additi…
We discuss the two-dimensional dilaton gravity with a scalar field as the source matter where the coupling with the gravity is given, besides the minimal one, through an external field. This coupling generalizes the conformal anomaly in the same way as those found in recent literature, but with a diferent motivation. The modification to the Hawking radiation is calculated explicity and shows an additional term that introduces a dependence on the (effective) mass of the black-hole.
The uniqueness of static asymptotically flat photon sphere for static black hole solution in Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory with arbitrary coupling constant was proposed. Using the conformal positive energy theorem we show that the dilaton sphere subject to the non-extremality condition authorizes a cylinder over a topological sphere.
In the Einestein-dilaton theory with a Liouville potential parameterized by $η$, we find a Schwarzschild-type black hole solution. This black hole solution, whose asymptotic geometry is described by the warped metric, is thermodynamically stable only for $0 \le η< 2$. Applying the gauge/gravity duality, we find that the dual gauge theory represents a non-conformal thermal system with the equation of state depending on $η$. After turning on the bulk vector fluctuations with and without a dilaton coupling, we calculate the charge diffusion constant, which indicates that the life time of the quas…
The effective one-loop action for general dilaton theories with arbitrary dilaton-dependent measure and nonminimal coupling to scalar matter is computed. As an application we determine the Hawking flux to infinity from black holes in d-dimensions. We resolve the recently resurrected problem of an apparent negative flux for nonminimally coupled scalars: For any $D \geq 4$ Black Hole the complete flux turns out to be precisely the one of minimal coupling. This result is obtained from a Christensen-Fulling type argument involving the (non-)conservation of energy-momentum. It is compared with appr…
Unlike Einstein gravity, dilaton-Maxwell gravity with matter is renormalizable in $2+ε$ dimensions and has a smooth $ε\to 0$ limit.By performing a renormalization- group study of this last theory we show that the gravitational coupling constant $G$ has a non-trivial,ultraviolet stable fixed point (asymptotic freedom) and that the dilatonic coupling functions (including the dilatonic potential) exhibit also a real, non-trivial fixed point. At such point the theory represents a standard charged string-inspired model.Stability and the gauge dependence of the fixed-point solution is discussed. It i…
The axion-dilaton string effective action is expressed in Einstein frame metric in a manifestly S-duality invariant form. It is shown that the moduli can be redefined to describe surface of a 2+1 dimensional pseudosphere. The classical cosmological solutions are of axion-dilaton are revisited. The Wheeler De Witt equation for the system is exactly solved and complete set of eigenfunctions are presented. The wave function factorizes and the one depending on the moduli is obtained by appealing to the underlying S-duality symmetry. Axion and dilaton parametrize the coset SU(1,1)/U(1), the S-duali…
String-loop effects may generate very weak matter couplings for a (massless) dilaton. We examine limits on the shift of such a dilaton toward its present equilibrium value from big-bang nucleosynthesis and the binary pulsar. On the other hand, the approach of the dilaton toward its present value can be realized in the early universe in a quick and efficient way if an inflationary period is present. We comment briefly on some implications.
We complete the proof of the ghost-dilaton theorem in string theory by showing that the coupling constant dependence of the vacuum vertices appearing in the closed string action is given correctly by one-point functions of the ghost-dilaton. To prove this at genus one we develop the formalism required to evaluate off-shell amplitudes on tori.
Experimental discovery of the dilaton would provide strong evidence for string theory. A light dilaton could show up in current tests of the inverse square law for gravity at sub-millimeter distances. In the large extra dimension scenario, Kaluza-Klein excitations of the dilaton can also contribute to the cooling of supernovae. In order to quantify these effects we compute the couplings of a low energy dilaton to matter. These predominantly arise from the fundamental dilaton coupling to the gluon field strength, which receives a sizable enhancement from QCD scaling. We show that detection of t…
A particular type of coupling of the dilaton field to the metric is shown to admit a simple geometric interpretation in terms of a volume element density independent from the metric. For dimension n = 4 two families of either magnetically or electrically charged static spherically symmetric solutions to the Maxwell-Einstein-Dilaton field equations are derived. Whereas the metrics of the "magnetic" spacetimes are smooth, geodesically complete and have the topology of a wormhole, the "electric" metrics behave similarly as the singular and geodesically incomplete classical Reissner-Nordstroem met…
We re-investigate the holographic superconductor in hyperscaling violation geometry by considering the coupling between the probed Maxwell field and the background dilaton. We find that the phenomenon of superconductivity still exists, but with properties affected by such a coupling. The critical temperature decreases as the hyperscaling violation exponent is increased. The influence of the dynamical exponent on the critical temperature becomes complicated which depends on the mass of the probed scalar field and the hyperscaling violation exponent. The results of the frequency gap show a large…
A model of non-local dilaton interactions, motivated by string duality symmetries, is applied to a scenario of "coupled quintessence" in which the dilaton dark energy is non-locally coupled to the dark-matter sources. It is shown that the non-local effects tend to generate a backreaction which -- for strong enough coupling -- can automatically compensate the acceleration due to the negative pressure of the dilaton potential, thus asymptotically restoring the standard (dust-dominated) decelerated regime. This result is illustrated by analytical computations and numerical examples.
Cosmologically active Brans-Dicke (or dilaton) scalar fields are generically ruled out by solar system tests of gravity unless their couplings to ordinary matter are much suppressed relative to gravitational strength, and this is a major hindrance when building realistic models of light dilatons coupled to matter. We propose a new mechanism for evading such bounds if matter also couples to a light axion, that exploits nonlinear target-space curvature interactions to qualitatively change how the fields respond to a gravitating source. We find that dilaton-matter couplings that would be excluded…
We study spherically and axially symmetric monopoles of the SU(2) Einstein-Yang-Mills-Higgs-dilaton (EYMHD) system with a new coupling between the dilaton field and the covariant derivative of the Higgs field. This coupling arises in the study of (4+1)-dimensional vortices in the Einstein-Yang-Mills (EYM) system.
