The [CII] fine--structure line at 158um is an excellent tracer of the warm diffuse gas in the ISM and the interfaces between molecular clouds and their surrounding atomic and ionized envelopes. Here we present the initial results from Galactic Observations of Terahertz C+ (GOTC+), a Herschel Key Project devoted to study the [CII] fine structure emission in the galactic plane using the HIFI instrument. We use the [CII] emission together with observations of CO as a probe to understand the effects of newly--formed stars on their interstellar environment and characterize the physical and chemical state of the star-forming gas. We collected data along 16 lines--of--sight passing near star forming regions in the inner Galaxy near longitudes 330 degrees and 20 degrees. We identify fifty-eight [CII] components that are associated with high--column density molecular clouds as traced by 13CO emission. We combine [CII], 12CO, and 13CO observations to derive the physical conditions of the [CII]--emitting regions in our sample of high--column density clouds based on comparison with results from a grid of Photon Dominated Region (PDR) models. From this unbiased sample, our results suggest that most of [CII] emission originates from clouds with H2 volume densities between 10e3.5 and 10e5.5 cm^-3 and weak FUV strength (CHI_0=1-10). We find two regions where our analysis suggests high densities >10e5 cm^-3 and strong FUV fields (CHI=10e4-10e6), likely associated with massive star formation. We suggest that [CII] emission in conjunction with CO isotopes is a good tool to differentiate between regions of massive star formation (high densities/strong FUV fields) and regions that are distant from massive stars (lower densities/weaker FUV fields) along the line--of--sight
We present 0.15-arcsec (1 kpc) resolution ALMA observations of the [CII] 157.74 um line and rest-frame 160-um continuum emission in two z~3 dusty, star-forming galaxies - ALESS 49.1 and ALESS 57.1, combined with resolved CO(3-2) observations. In both sources, the [CII] surface brightness distribution is dominated by a compact core $\leq$1 kpc in radius, a factor of 2-3 smaller than the extent of the CO(3-2) emission. In ALESS 49.1, we find an additional extended (8-kpc radius), low surface-brightness [CII] component. Based on an analysis of mock ALMA observations, the [CII] and 160-um continuu…
We present observations of velocity-resolved [CII] 158 $μ$m emission from both a dense and a more diffuse photodissociation region (PDR) in the Perseus giant molecular cloud (GMC) using the Heterodyne Instrument for the Far-Infrared onboard the Herschel Space Telescope. We detect [CII] emission from 80\% of the total positions, with a 95\% detection rate from the dense boundary region. The integrated intensity of the [CII] emission remains relatively constant across each boundary, despite the observed range in optical extinction between 1 mag and 10 mag. This flat profile indicates a constant …
We present Herschel spectroscopy of atomic lines arising in photodissociation regions as well as ionization regions of nearby early-type galaxies (ETGs), focusing on the volume-limited Atlas3D sample. Our data include the [CII], [OI], and [NII] 122 and 205 micron lines, along with ancillary data including CO and HI maps. We find ETGs have [CII]/FIR ratios slightly lower than spiral galaxies in the KINGFISH sample, and several ETGs have unusually large [NII] 122/[CII] ratios. The [NII] 122/[CII] ratio is correlated with UV colors and there is a strong anti-correlation of [CII]/FIR with NUV-K se…
The ratio of the [CII] 158$\,μ$m emission line over the total infrared emission (TIR) is often used as a proxy for the photoelectric (PE) heating efficiency ($ε_{\rm PE}$) of the far-ultraviolet (FUV) photons absorbed by dust in the interstellar medium. In the nearby galaxy M31, we measure a strong radial variation of [CII]/TIR that we rule out as being due to an intrinsic variation in $ε_{\rm PE}$. [CII]/TIR fails as a proxy for $ε_{\rm PE}$, because the TIR measures all dust heating, not just the contribution from FUV photons capable of ejecting electrons from dust grains. Using extensive mu…
We use archival Herschel data to examine the singly ionized carbon ([CII]) content of 14 star forming dwarf galaxies in the Virgo cluster. We use spectral energy distribution (SED) fits to far infrared, mid infrared, near infrared, optical and ultraviolet data to derive the total infrared continuum (TIR) for these galaxies. We compare the [CII]/TIR ratio for dwarf galaxies in the central part of Virgo to those in the southern part of the cluster and to galaxies with similar TIR luminosities and metallicities in the Herschel Dwarf Galaxy Survey (DGS) sample of field dwarf galaxies to look for s…
We present the first 7.5'x11.5' velocity-resolved map of the [CII]158um line toward the Orion molecular cloud-1 (OMC-1) taken with the Herschel/HIFI instrument. In combination with far-infrared (FIR) photometric images and velocity-resolved maps of the H41alpha hydrogen recombination and CO J=2-1 lines, this data set provides an unprecedented view of the intricate small-scale kinematics of the ionized/PDR/molecular gas interfaces and of the radiative feedback from massive stars. The main contribution to the [CII] luminosity (~85%) is from the extended, FUV-illuminated face of the cloud G_0>500…
Understanding the evolution of galaxies from the starforming blue cloud to the quiescent red sequence has been revolutionized by observations taken with Herschel Space Observatory, and the onset of the era of sensitive millimeter interferometers, allowing astronomers to probe both cold dust as well as the cool interstellar medium in a large set of galaxies with unprecedented sensitivity. Recent Herschel observations of of H2-bright Hickson Compact Groups of galaxies (HCGs) has shown that [CII] may be boosted in diffuse shocked gas. CARMA CO(1-0) observations of these [CII]-bright HCGs has show…
We study the relationship between the [CII] emission and the star formation rate (SFR) in the Galactic plane and separate the relationship of different ISM phases to the SFR. We compare these relationships to those in external galaxies and local clouds, allowing examinations of these relationships over a wide range of physical scales. We compare the distribution of the [CII] emission, with its different contributing ISM phases, as a function of Galactocentric distance with the SFR derived from radio continuum observations. We also compare the SFR with the surface density distribution of atomic…
Recently, we introduced detailed isotopic chemistry into the KOSMA-tau model for photon-dominated regions (PDRs) to give theoretical predictions for the abundance of the carbon isotopologues as a function of PDR parameters. Combined with radiative transfer computations for specific geometries, we estimated the possible intensity ratio of the [CII]/[13CII] lines. Here, we compare these predictions with new observations. We performed Herschel/HIFI observations of the [CII] 158micron line in a number of PDRs. In all sources we observed at least two hyperfine components of the [13CII] transition a…
We present far-infrared spectral line observations of five galaxies from the LITTLE THINGS sample: DDO 69, DDO 70, DDO 75, DDO 155, and WLM. While most studies of dwarfs focus on bright systems or starbursts due to observational constraints, our data extend the observed parameter space into the regime of low surface brightness dwarf galaxies with low metallicities and moderate star formation rates. Our targets were observed with Herschel at the [CII] 158um, [OI] 63um, [OIII] 88um, and NII 122um emission lines using the PACS Spectrometer. These high-resolution maps allow us for the first time t…
The Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) provides the only laboratory to study the structure of molecular gas at high resolution and low metallicity. We present results from the Herschel Spectroscopic Survey of the SMC (HS$^{3}$), which mapped the key far-IR cooling lines [CII], [OI], [NII], and [OIII] in five star-forming regions, and new ALMA 7m-array maps of $^{12}$CO and $^{13}$CO $(2-1)$ with coverage overlapping four of the five HS$^{3}$ regions. We detect [CII] and [OI] throughout all of the regions mapped. The data allow us to compare the structure of the molecular clouds and surrounding photo…
[Abridged] The [CII] 158um line is an important tool for understanding the life cycle of interstellar matter. Ionized carbon is present in a variety of phases of the interstellar medium, including the diffuse ionized medium, warm and cold atomic clouds, clouds in transition from atomic to molecular, and dense and warm photon dominated regions (PDRs). The Galactic Observations of Terahertz C+ (GOTC+) project surveys the [CII] line over the entire Galactic disk with velocity-resolved observations using the Herschel/HIFI instrument. We present the first longitude-velocity maps of the [CII] emissi…
The sensitive infrared telescopes, Spitzer and Herschel, have been used to target low-metallicity star-forming galaxies, allowing us to investigate the properties of their interstellar medium (ISM) in unprecedented detail. Interpretation of the observations in physical terms relies on careful modeling of those properties. We have employed a multiphase approach to model the ISM phases (HII region and photodissociation region) with the spectral synthesis code Cloudy. Our goal is to characterize the physical conditions (gas densities, radiation fields, etc.) in the ISM of the galaxies from the He…
Context: The emission line of [CII] at 158 micron is one of the strongest cooling lines of the interstellar medium (ISM) in galaxies. Aims: Disentangling the relative contributions of the different ISM phases to [CII] emission, is a major topic of the HerM33es program, a Herschel key project to study the ISM in the nearby spiral galaxy M33. Methods: Using PACS, we have mapped the emission of [CII] 158 micron, [OI] 63 micron, and other FIR lines in a 2'x2' region of the northern spiral arm of M33, centered on the HII region BCLMP302. At the peak of H-alpha emission, we have observed in addition…
M33 is a gas rich spiral galaxy of the Local Group. We investigate the relationship between the two major gas cooling lines and the total infrared (TIR) dust continuum. We mapped the emission of gas and dust in M33 using the far-infrared lines of [CII] and [OI](63um) and the TIR. The line maps were observed with Herschel/PACS. These maps have 50pc resolution and form a ~370pc wide stripe along its major axis covering the sites of bright HII regions, but also more quiescent arm and inter-arm regions from the southern arm at 2kpc galacto-centric distance to the south out to 5.7kpc distance to th…
We present Herschel observations of far-infrared (FIR) fine-structure (FS) lines [CII]158$μ$m, [OI]63$μ$m, [OIII]52$μ$m, and [SiII]35$μ$m in the z=2.56 Cloverleaf quasar, and combine them with published data in an analysis of the dense interstellar medium (ISM) in this system. Observed [CII]158$μ$m, [OI]63$μ$m, and FIR continuum flux ratios are reproduced with photodissociation region (PDR) models characterized by moderate far-ultraviolet (FUV) radiation fields $G_0=$ 0.3-1$\times10^3$ and atomic gas densities $n_{\rm H}=$ 3-5$\times10^3$ cm$^{-3}$, depending on contributions to [CII]158$μ$m f…
We report on two regularly rotating galaxies at redshift z=2, using high resolution spectra of the bright [CII] 158 micron emission line from the HIFI instrument on the Herschel Space Observatory. Both SDSS090122.37+181432.3 ("S0901") and SDSS J120602.09+514229.5 ("the Clone") are strongly lensed and show the double-horned line profile that is typical of rotating gas disks. Using a parametric disk model to fit the emission line profiles, we find that S0901 has a rotation speed v sin(i) = 120 +/- 7 km/s and gas velocity dispersion sigma < 23 km/s. The best fitting model for the Clone is a rotat…
(Abridged) The Magellanic Clouds provide a nearby laboratory for metal-poor dwarf galaxies. The low dust abundance enhances the penetration of UV photons into the interstellar medium (ISM), resulting in a relatively larger filling factor of the ionized gas. Furthermore, there is likely a hidden molecular gas reservoir probed by the [CII]157um line. We present Herschel/PACS maps in several tracers, [CII], [OI]63um,145um, [NII]122um, [NIII]57um, and [OIII]88um in the HII region N11B in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Halpha and [OIII]5007A images were used as complementary data to investigate the ef…
IRAS 20319+3958 in Cygnus X South is a rare example of a free-floating globule (mass ~240 Msun, length ~1.5 pc) with an internal HII region created by the stellar feedback of embedded intermediate-mass stars, in particular, one Herbig Be star. Here, we present a Herschel/HIFI CII 158 mu map of the whole globule and a large set of other FIR lines (mid-to high-J CO lines observed with Herschel/PACS and SPIRE, the OI 63 mu line and the CO 16-15 line observed with upGREAT on SOFIA), covering the globule head and partly a position in the tail. The CII map revealed that the whole globule is probably…
We present an analysis of [OI]63, [OIII]88, [NII]122 and [CII]158 far-infrared (FIR) fine-structure line observations obtained with Herschel/PACS, for ~240 local luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs) in the Great Observatories All-sky LIRG Survey (GOALS). We find pronounced declines -deficits- of line-to-FIR-continuum emission for [NII]122, [OI]63 and [CII]158 as a function of FIR color and infrared luminosity surface density, $Σ_{\rm IR}$. The median electron density of the ionized gas in LIRGs, based on the [NII]122/[NII]205 ratio, is $n_{\rm e}$ = 41 cm$^{-3}$. We find that the dispersion in t…
We present the [CII] 157.7 micron map of galaxy NGC 7331 obtained with FIFI-LS on SOFIA. This map extends an existent Herschel/PACS observation of the central strip of the galaxy to encompass the entire molecular ring and much of the disk, including multiple spiral arms with intense far-IR emission. We also present Herschel archival data of the [NII] 205 micron line which covers a substantial part of the [CII] SOFIA observations and allows us to estimate the neutral fraction of the [CII] emission along the ring and disk of the galaxy. We find that the neutral fraction rises with the distance f…
We report the first results from a spectroscopic survey of the [CII] 158um line from a sample of intermediate redshift (0.2<z<0.8) (ultra)-luminous infrared galaxies, (U)LIRGs (LIR>10^11.5 Lsun), using the SPIRE-Fourier Transform Spectrometer (FTS) on board the Herschel Space Observatory. This is the first survey of [CII] emission, an important tracer of star-formation, at a redshift range where the star-formation rate density of the Universe increases rapidly. We detect strong [CII] 158um line emission from over 80% of the sample. We find that the [CII] line is luminous, in the range (0.8-4)x…
We present the first Herschel spectroscopic detections of the [OI]63 and [CII]158 micron fine-structure transitions, and a single para-H2O line from the 35 x 15 kpc^2 shocked intergalactic filament in Stephan's Quintet. The filament is believed to have been formed when a high-speed intruder to the group collided with clumpy intergroup gas. Observations with the PACS spectrometer provide evidence for broad (> 1000 km s^-1) luminous [CII] line profiles, as well as fainter [OI]63micron emission. SPIRE FTS observations reveal water emission from the p-H2O (111-000) transition at several positions …
We present large-scale submm observations towards the Sgr A Complex covering ~300 arcmin2. These data were obtained in the frame of the HEXGAL Program with the Herschel-HIFI satellite and are complemented with submm observations obtained with the NANTEN2/SMART telescope as part of the NANTEN2/SMART Central Nuclear Zone Survey. The observed species are CO(4-3) observed with the NANTEN2/SMART telescope, and [CI](1-0), [CI](2-1), [NII](1-0), and [CII](3/2-1/2) observed with the Herschel-HIFI satellite. The observations are presented in a 1 km/s spectral resolution and a spatial resolution ranging…
The distribution of various interstellar gas components and the pressure in the interstellar medium (ISM) is a result of the interplay of different dynamical mechanisms and energy sources on the gas in the Milky Way. The scale heights of the different gas tracers, such as HI and CO, are a measure of these processes. The scale height of [CII] emission in the Galactic plane is important for understanding those ISM components not traced by CO or HI. We determine the average distribution of [CII] perpendicular to the plane in the inner Galactic disk and compare it to the distributions of other key…
We present the first results of the Herschel open time key program, Galactic Observations of Terahertz C$^+$ (GOT C+) survey of the [CII] fine-structure line at 1.9 THz (158 microns) using the HIFI instrument on Herschel. We detected 146 interstellar clouds along sixteen lines-of-sight towards the inner Galaxy. We also acquired HI and CO isotopologue data along each line-of-sight for analysis of the physical conditions in these clouds. Here we analyze 29 diffuse clouds (A$_{V}$ < 1.3 mag.) in this sample characterized by having [CII] and HI emission, but no detectable CO. We find that [CII] em…
Star formation rate (SFR) measurements at z>4 have relied mostly on rest-frame far-ultraviolet (FUV) observations. The corrections for dust attenuation based on IRX-$β$ relation are highly uncertain and are still debated in the literature. Hence, rest-frame far-infrared (FIR) observations are necessary to constrain the dust-obscured component of the SFR. In this paper, we exploit the rest-frame FIR continuum observations collected by the ALMA Large Program to INvestigate [CII] at Early times (ALPINE) to directly constrain the obscured SFR in galaxies at 4.4<z<5.9. We use stacks of continuum im…
ABRIDGED: Context: HI and CO large scale surveys of the Milky Way trace the diffuse atomic clouds and the dense shielded regions of molecular hydrogen clouds. However, until recently, we have not had spectrally resolved C+ surveys to characterize the photon dominated interstellar medium, including, the H2 gas without C, the CO-dark H2, in a large sample of clouds. Aims: To use a sparse Galactic plane survey of the 1.9 THz [C II] spectral line from the Herschel Open Time Key Programme, Galactic Observations of Terahertz C+ (GOT C+), to characterize the H2 gas without CO in a statistically signi…
We aim to better understand the heating of the gas by observing the prominent gas cooling line [CII] at 158um in the low-metallicity environment of the Local Group spiral galaxy M33 at scales of 280pc. In particular, we aim at describing the variation of the photoelectric heating efficiency with galactic environment. In this unbiased study, we used ISO/LWS [CII] observations along the major axis of M33, in combination with Herschel PACS and SPIRE continuum maps, IRAM 30m CO 2-1 and VLA HI data to study the variation of velocity integrated intensities. The ratio of [CII] emission over the far-i…
We aim to understand the contribution of the ionized, atomic and molecular phases of the ISM to the [CII] emission from clouds near the dynamical center and the BCLMP302 HII region in the north of the nearby galaxy M33 at a spatial resolution of 50pc. We combine high resolution [CII] spectra taken with the HIFI spectrometer onboard the Herschel satellite with [CII] Herschel-PACS maps and ground-based observations of CO(2-1) and HI. All data are at a common spatial resolution of 50pc. Typically, the [CII] lines have widths intermediate between the narrower CO(2-1) and broader HI line profiles. …
We present spectroscopic observations of FIR fine-structure lines of 26 Seyfert galaxies obtained with the Herschel-PACS spectrometer. These observations are complemented by spectroscopy with Spitzer-IRS and Herschel-SPIRE. The ratios of the OIII, NII, SIII and NeV lines have been used to determine electron densities in the ionised gas regions. The CI lines, observed with SPIRE, have been used to measure the densities in the neutral gas, while the OI lines provide a measure of the gas temperature, at densities below 10000 cm-3. Using the OI145/63um and SIII33/18um line ratios we find an anti-c…
With the aim of improving predictions on far infrared (FIR) line emission from Giant Molecular Clouds (GMC), we study the effects of photoevaporation (PE) produced by external far-ultraviolet (FUV) and ionizing (extreme-ultraviolet, EUV) radiation on GMC structure. We consider three different GMCs with mass in the range $M_{\rm GMC} = 10^{3-6}\,\rm{M_{\odot}}$. Our model includes: (i) an observationally-based inhomogeneous GMC density field, and (ii) its time evolution during the PE process. In the fiducial case ($M_{\rm GMC}\approx10^5 M_{\odot}$), the photoevaporation time ($t_{pe}$) increas…
The Herschel Space Observatory was used to observe ~ 120 pre-main-sequence stars in Taurus as part of the GASPS Open Time Key project. PACS was used to measure the continuum as well as several gas tracers such as [OI] 63 μm, [OI] 145 μm, [CII] 158 μm, OH, H2O and CO. The strongest line seen is [OI] at 63 μm. We find a clear correlation between the strength of the [OI] 63 μm line and the 63 μm continuum for disk sources. In outflow sources, the line emission can be up to 20 times stronger than in disk sources, suggesting that the line emission is dominated by the outflow. The tight correlation …
We present Herschel far-IR photometry and spectroscopy as well as ground based CO observations of an intermediate redshift (0.21 < z < 0.88) sample of Herschel-selected (ultra)-luminous infrared galaxies (L_IR > 10^11.5L_sun). With these measurements we trace the dust continuum, far-IR atomic line emission, in particular [CII]\,157.7microns, as well as the molecular gas of z~0.3 (U)LIRGs and perform a detailed investigation of the interstellar medium of the population. We find that the majority of Herschel-selected intermediate redshift (U)LIRGs have L_CII/L_FIR ratios that are a factor of abo…
The cosmic abundance of hydrides depends critically on high-energy UV, X-ray, and particle irradiation. Here we study hydrides in star-forming regions where irradiation by the young stellar object can be substantial, and density and temperature can be much enhanced over interstellar values. Lines of OH, CH, NH, SH and their ions OH+, CH+, NH+, SH+, H2O+, and H3O+ were observed in star-forming regions by the HIFI spectrometer onboard the Herschel Space Observatory. Molecular column densities are derived from observed ground-state lines, models, or rotational diagrams. We report here on two prot…
We present the first complete, velocity-resolved [CII] 158um image of the M51 grand-design spiral galaxy, observed with the upGREAT instrument on SOFIA. [CII] is an important tracer of various phases of the interstellar medium (ISM), including ionized gas, neutral atomic, and diffuse molecular regions. We combine the [CII] data with HI, CO, 24um dust continuum, FUV, and near-infrared K-band observations to study the evolution of the ISM across M51's spiral arms in both position-position, and position-velocity space. Our data show strong velocity gradients in HI, 12CO, and [CII] at the location…
We investigate the physics and chemistry of the gas and dust in dense photon-dominated regions (PDRs), along with their dependence on the illuminating UV field. Using Herschel-HIFI observations, we study the gas energetics in NGC 7023 in relation to the morphology of this nebula. NGC 7023 is the prototype of a PDR illuminated by a B2V star and is one of the key targets of Herschel. Our approach consists in determining the energetics of the region by combining the information carried by the mid-IR spectrum (extinction by classical grains, emission from very small dust particles) with that of th…
We present Herschel, ALMA, and MUSE observations of the molecular ring of Messier 104, also known as the Sombrero galaxy. These previously unpublished archival data shed new light on the content of the interstellar medium of M104. In particular, molecular hydrogen measured by CO emission and dust measured by far-infrared light are uniformly distributed along the ring. The ionized gas revealed by H$α$ and [CII] emission is distributed in knots along the ring. Despite being classified as an SAa galaxy, M104 displays features typical of early-type galaxies. We therefore compared its [CII] and dus…
Ionized carbon is the main gas-phase reservoir of carbon in the neutral diffuse interstellar medium and its 158 micron fine structure transition [CII] is the most important cooling line of the diffuse interstellar medium (ISM). We combine [CII] absorption and emission spectroscopy to gain an improved understanding of physical conditions in the different phases of the ISM. We present high resolution [CII] spectra obtained with the Herschel/HIFI instrument towards bright dust continuum sources regions in the Galactic plane, probing simultaneously the diffuse gas along the line of sight and the b…
We present [CII] synthetic observations of smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) simulations of a dwarf galaxy merger. The merging process varies the star-formation rate by more than three orders of magnitude. Several star clusters are formed, the feedback of which disperses and unbinds the dense gas through expanding HII regions and supernova (SN) explosions. For galaxies with properties similar to the modelled ones, we find that the [CII] emission remains optically thin throughout the merging process. We identify the Warm Neutral Medium ($3<\log T_{\rm gas}<4$ with $χ_{\rm HI}>2χ_{\rm H2}$) …
We present Herschel PACS and SPIRE spectroscopy of the most important far-infrared cooling lines in the nearby edge-on spiral galaxy, NGC 891: [CII] 158 $μ$m, [NII] 122, 205 $μ$m, [OI] 63, 145 $μ$m, and [OIII] 88 $μ$m. We find that the photoelectric heating efficiency of the gas, traced via the ([CII]+[OII]63)/$F_{\mathrm{TIR}}$ ratio, varies from a mean of 3.5$\times$10$^{-3}$ in the centre up to 8$\times$10$^{-3}$ at increasing radial and vertical distances in the disc. A decrease in ([CII]+[OII]63)/$F_{\mathrm{TIR}}$ but constant ([CII]+[OI]63)/$F_{\mathrm{PAH}}$ with increasing FIR colour …
The [CII] deficit, which describes the observed decrease in the ratio of [CII] 158 micron emission to continuum infrared emission in galaxies with high star formation surface densities, places a significant challenge to the interpretation of [CII] detections from across the observable universe. In an attempt to further decode the cause of the [CII] deficit, the [CII] and dust continuum emission from 18 Local Volume galaxies has been split based on conditions within the interstellar medium where it originated. This is completed using the Key Insights in Nearby Galaxies: a Far-Infrared Survey wi…
Methods: We used the dual-band receiver GREAT on board the SOFIA airborne telescope to perform observations of the [C II] 158 μm fine-structure line at the postitions of two giant molecular clouds (GMC) in the center of IC 342 (GMCs C and E) and compared the spectra with corresponding ground-based data for low- and mid-J CO and [C I]. We performed model calculations assuming a clumpy photo-dissociation region (PDR) environment using the KOSMA-tau PDR model code to derive physical parameters of the local medium. Results: The [C II] 158 μm emission resembles the spectral signature of ground-base…
We present the first results on the diffuse transition clouds observed in [CII] line emission at 158 microns (1.9 THz) towards Galactic longitudes near 340deg (5 LOSs) and 20deg (11 LOSs) as part of the GOT C+ survey. Out of the total 146 [CII] velocity components detected by profile fitting we identify 53 as diffuse molecular clouds with associated $^{12}$CO emission but without $^{13}$CO emission and characterized by A$_V$ < 5 mag. We estimate the fraction of the [CII] emission in the diffuse HI layer in each cloud and then determine the [CII] emitted from the molecular layers in the cloud. …
The physical state of the gas in the central 500 pc of NGC~5128 (the radio galaxy Centaurus A - Cen A), was investigated using the far-infrared fine-structure lines of carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen, as well as the CO(4-3) molecular line. The circumnuclear disk (CND) is traced by emission from dust and the neutral gas ([CI] and CO). A gas outflow with a line-of-sight velocity of 60 km/s is evident in both species. The center of the CND is bright in [OI], [OIII], and [CII]; [OI]63mu emission dominates that of [CII] even though it is absorbed with optical depths of 1.0-1.5. The outflow is well-tra…
We present, for the first time, the local [CII] 158 um emission line luminosity function measured using a sample of more than 500 galaxies from the Revised Bright Galaxy Sample (RBGS). [CII] luminosities are measured from the Herschel PACS observations of the Luminous Infrared Galaxies in the Great Observatories All-sky LIRG Survey (GOALS) and estimated for the rest of the sample based on the far-IR luminosity and color. The sample covers 91.3% of the sky and is complete at S_60 um > 5.24 Jy. We calculated the completeness as a function of [CII] line luminosity and distance, based on the far-I…
We present Herschel dust continuum, James Clerk Maxwell Telescope CO(3-2) observations and a search for [CII] 158 micron and [OI] 63 micron spectral line emission for the brightest early-type dwarf satellite of Andromeda, NGC 205. While direct gas measurements (Mgas ~ 1.5e+6 Msun, HI + CO(1-0)) have proven to be inconsistent with theoretical predictions of the current gas reservoir in NGC 205 (> 1e+7 Msun), we revise the missing interstellar medium mass problem based on new gas mass estimates (CO(3-2), [CII], [OI]) and indirect measurements of the interstellar medium content through dust conti…
We present [CII] observations of 20 strongly lensed dusty star forming galaxies at 2.1 < z < 5.7 using APEX and Herschel. The sources were selected on their 1.4 mm flux (S_1.4mm > 20 mJy) from the South Pole Telescope survey, with far-infrared (FIR) luminosities determined from extensive photometric data. The [CII] line is robustly detected in 17 sources, all but one being spectrally resolved. Eleven out of 20 sources observed in [CII] also have low-J CO detections from ATCA. A comparison with mid- and high-J CO lines from ALMA reveals consistent [CII] and CO velocity profiles, suggesting that…
A summary is presented for 130 galaxies observed with the Herschel PACS instrument to measure fluxes for the [CII] 158 um emission line. Sources cover a wide range of active galactic nucleus to starburst classifications, as derived from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) strength measured with the Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph. Redshifts from [CII] and line to continuum strengths (equivalent width of [CII]) are given for the full sample, which includes 18 new [CII] flux measures. Calibration of L([CII)]) as a star formation rate (SFR) indicator is determined by comparing [CII] luminosities …
The [CII] 158um fine-structure line is the brightest emission line observed in local star-forming galaxies. As a major coolant of the gas-phase interstellar medium, [CII] balances the heating, including that due to far-ultraviolet photons, which heat the gas via the photoelectric effect. However, the origin of [CII] emission remains unclear, because C+ can be found in multiple phases of the interstellar medium. Here we measure the fractions of [CII] emission originating in the ionized and neutral gas phases of a sample of nearby galaxies. We use the [NII] 205um fine-structure line to trace the…
We present the first large scale high angular resolution survey of ionized nitrogen in the Galactic Plane through emission of its two fine structure transitions ([NII]) at 122 $μ$m and 205 $μ$m. The observations were largely obtained with the PACS instrument onboard the Herschel Space Observatory. The lines-of-sight were in the Galactic plane, following those of the Herschel OTKP project GOT C+. Both lines are reliably detected at the 10$^{-8}$ - 10$^{-7}$ $W$m$^{-2}$sr$^{-1}$ level over the range -60$^{o}$ $\leq$ $l$ $\leq$ 60$^{o}$. The $rms$ of the intensity among the 25 PACS spaxels of a g…
We present SÍGAME simulations of the [CII]157.7$μ$ fine structure line emission from cosmological smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) simulations of seven main sequence galaxies at z=2. Using sub-grid physics prescriptions the gas in our simulations is modeled as a multi-phased interstellar medium (ISM) comprised of molecular gas residing in giant molecular clouds, an atomic gas phase associated with photo-dissociation regions (PDRs) at the cloud surfaces, and a diffuse, ionized gas phase. Adopting logotropic cloud density profiles and accounting for heating by the local FUV radiation field …
The [CII] 158$μ$m emission line can arise in all phases of the ISM, therefore being able to disentangle the different contributions is an important yet unresolved problem when undertaking galaxy-wide, integrated [CII] observations. We present a new multi-phase 3D radiative transfer interface that couples Starburst99, a stellar spectrophotometric code, with the photoionisation and astrochemistry codes Mocassin and 3D-PDR. We model entire star forming regions, including the ionised, atomic and molecular phases of the ISM, and apply a Bayesian inference methodology to parametrise how the fraction…
We use new Band-3 CO(1-0) observations taken with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) to study the physical conditions in the interstellar gas of a sample of 27 dusty main-sequence star-forming galaxies at 0.03<$z$<0.2 present in the Valparaíso ALMA Line Emission Survey (VALES). The sample is drawn from far-IR bright galaxies over $\sim$160 deg$^{2}$ in the Herschel Astrophysical Terahertz Large Area Survey (HATLAS), which is covered by Herschel [CII] 158 $μ$m spectroscopy and far-infrared (FIR) photometry. The [CII] and CO lines are both detected at >5$σ$ in 26 sources. We…
We study the mean properties of a large representative sample of 217 galaxies showing CIII] emission at $2<z<4$, selected from a parent sample of $\sim$750 main-sequence star-forming galaxies in the VANDELS survey. These CIII] emitters have a broad range of UV luminosities, thus allowing a detailed stacking analysis to characterize their stellar mass, star formation rate (SFR) and stellar metallicity, as a function of the UV emission line ratios, EWs, and the carbon-to-oxygen (C/O) abundance ratio. Reliable CIII] detections represent $\sim$30% of the parent sample. Extreme CIII] emitters (EW(C…
The sample of 379 extragalactic sources is presented that have mid-infrared, high resolution spectroscopy with the Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) and also spectroscopy of the [CII] 158 um line with the Herschel Photodetector Array Camera and Spectrometer (PACS). The emission line profiles of [NeII] 12.81 um, [NeIII] 15.55 um, and [CII] 158 um are presented, and intrinsic line widths are determined (full width half maximum of Gaussian profiles after instrumental correction). All line profiles together with overlays comparing positions of PACS and IRS observations are made available in the …
