Traditionally runaway stars are O and B type stars with large peculiar velocities. We want to extend this definition to young stars (up to ~50 Myr) of any spectral type and identify those present in the Hipparcos catalogue applying different selection criteria such as peculiar space velocities or peculiar one-dimensional velocities. Runaway stars are important to study the evolution of multiple star systems or star clusters as well as to identify origins of neutron stars. We compile distances, proper motions, spectral types, luminosity classes, V magnitudes and B-V colours and utilise evolutionary models from different authors to obtain star ages and study a sample of 7663 young Hipparcos stars within 3 kpc from the Sun. Radial velocities are obtained from the literature. We investigate the distributions of the peculiar spatial velocity, the peculiar radial velocity as well as the peculiar tangential velocity and its one-dimensional components and obtain runaway star probabilities for each star in the sample. In addition, we look for stars that are situated outside any OB association or OB cluster and the Galactic plane as well as stars of which the velocity vector points away from the median velocity vector of neighbouring stars or the surrounding local OB association/ cluster although the absolute velocity might be small. We find a total of 2547 runaway star candidates (with a contamination of normal Population I stars of 20 per cent at most). Thus, after subtraction of those 20 per cent, the runaway frequency among young stars is about 27 per cent. We compile a catalogue of runaway stars which will be available via VizieR.
CONTEXT.The first Gaia Data Release (DR1) significantly improved the previously available proper motions for the majority of the Tycho-2 stars. AIMS. We want to detect runaway stars using Gaia DR1 proper motions and compare our results with previous searches. METHODS. Runaway O stars and BA supergiants are detected using a 2-D proper-motion method. The sample is selected using Simbad, spectra from our GOSSS project, literature spectral types, and photometry processed using CHORIZOS. RESULTS. We detect 76 runaway stars, 17 (possibly 19) of them with no prior identification as such, with an esti…
We describe the results of a search for the remnants of the Sun's birth cluster among stars in the Hipparcos Catalogue. This search is based on the predicted phase space distribution of the Sun's siblings from simple simulations of the orbits of the cluster stars in a smooth Galactic potential. For stars within 100 pc the simulations show that it is interesting to examine those that have small space motions relative to the Sun. From amongst the candidate siblings thus selected there are six stars with ages consistent with that of the Sun. Considering their radial velocities and abundances only…
A new reduction of the astrometric data as produced by the Hipparcos mission has been published, claiming that the accuracies for nearly all stars brighter than magnitude $\mathrm{Hp}=8$ are improved, by up to a factor 4, compared to the original catalogue. As correlations between the underlying abscissa residuals have also been reduced by more than an order of magnitude to an insignificant level, our ability to determine reliable parallaxes and proper motions for open clusters should be improved. The new Hipparcos astrometric catalogue is used to derive mean parallax and proper motion estimat…
We have detected 13 new runaway-star candidates of spectral type O combining the TGAS (Tycho-Gaia Astrometric Solution) proper motions from Gaia Data Release 1 (DR1) and the sample from GOSSS (Galactic O-Star Spectroscopic Survey). We have also combined TGAS and Hipparcos proper motions to check that our technique recovers many of the previously known O-type runaways in the sample.
We explore the hypothesis that B type emission-line stars (Be stars) have their origin in mass-transfer binaries by measuring the fraction of runaway Be stars. We assemble the largest-to-date catalogue of 632 Be stars with 6D kinematics, exploiting the precise astrometry of the Tycho-Gaia Astrometric Solution (TGAS) from the first Gaia Data Release. Using binary stellar evolution simulations, we make predictions for the runaway and equatorial rotation velocities of a runaway Be star population. Accounting for observational biases, we calculate that if all classical Be stars originated through …
We develop Bayesian statistical methods for discovering and assigning probabilities to non-random (e.g., physical) stellar companions. These companions are either presently bound or were previously bound. The probabilities depend on similarities in corrected proper motion parallel and perpendicular to the brighter component's motion, parallax, and the local phase-space density of field stars. Control experiments are conducted to understand the behavior of false positives. The technique is applied to the Hipparcos Catalogue within 100 pc. This is the first all-sky survey to locate escaped compa…
The Galactic orbits of 27 440 stars of all classes with accurate coordinates and parallaxes of more than 3 mas from the Hipparcos catalogue, proper motions from the Tycho-2 catalogue, and radial velocities from the Pulkovo Compilation of Radial Velocities (PCRV) are analyzed. The sample obtained is much more representative than the Geneva-Copenhagen survey and other studies of Galactic orbits in the solar neighborhood. An estimation of the influence of systematic errors in the velocities on orbital parameters shows that the errors of the proper motions due to the duplicity of stars are tangibl…
We have performed Monte Carlo simulations of the trajectories of several runaway stars using their parallaxes and proper motions from the Gaia EDR3 catalogue. We have confirmed the hypothesis that the stars AE Aur and $μ$Col are a product of the multiple system breakup $\sim$2.5 Myr ago and the Orion Trapezium may be the parent cluster for this pair of stars. We show that the data from the Gaia EDR3 catalogue for the star $ι$Ori, mainly the parallax, do not allow us to talk about the breakup of the multiple system of AE Aur, $μ$Col, and $ι$Ori. The existence of close pair encounters between th…
(abridged) The Hundred-Thousand-Proper-Motion (HTPM) project will determine the proper motions of ~113500 stars using a 23-year baseline. The proper motions will use the Hipparcos data, with epoch 1991.25, as first epoch and the first intermediate-release Gaia astrometry, with epoch ~2014.5, as second epoch. The expected HTPM proper-motion standard errors are 30-190 muas/yr, depending on stellar magnitude. Depending on the characteristics of an object, in particular its distance and velocity, its radial velocity can have a significant impact on the determination of its proper motion. The impac…
Context. In the absence of complete kinematic data it has not previously been possible to furnish accurate lists of member stars for all moving groups. There has been an unresolved dispute concerning the apparent inconsistency of the Hipparcos parallax distance to the Pleiades. Aims. To find improved candidate lists for clusters and associations represented among Hipparcos stars, to establish distances, and to cast light on the Pleiades distance anomaly. Methods. We use a six dimensional fitting procedure to identify candidates, and plot CMDs for 20 of the nearest groups. We calculate the mean…
Young nearby runaway stars are suitable to search for their place of origin and possibly associated objects, for example neutron stars. Tetzlaff, Neuhäuser & Hohle (2011) selected young ($\le 50$ Myr) runaway star candidates from Hipparcos, for which they had estimated the ages from the location in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram and evolutionary models. Here, we redetermine or constrain their young ages more precisely not only by using the new Gaia DR2 data, but also by measuring lithium, which is a youth indicator. For 308 stars, we took spectra to search for the strong resonance doublet of …
Hipparcos, the first ever experiment of global astrometry, was launched by ESA in 1989 and its results published in 1997 (Perryman et al., Astron. Astrophys. 323, L49, 1997; Perryman & ESA (eds), The Hipparcos and Tycho catalogues, ESA SP-1200, 1997). A new reduction was later performed using an improved satellite attitude reconstruction leading to an improved accuracy for stars brighter than 9th magnitude (van Leeuwen & Fantino, Astron. Astrophys. 439, 791, 2005; van Leeuwen, Astron. Astrophys. 474, 653, 2007). The Hipparcos Catalogue provided an extended dataset of very accurate astrometric …
Precise measurement of the fundamental parameters of stellar systems, including mass and radius, depends critically on how well the stellar distances are known. Astrometry from space provides parallax measurements of unprecented accuracy, from which distances can be derived, initially from the Hipparcos mission, with further refinement of that analysis provided by van Leeuwen in 2007. The publication of the Gaia DR2 catalogue promises a dramatic improvement in the available data. We have recalculated the dynamical masses of a sample of 1 700 close visual binary stars using Gaia DR2 and compare…
We present an investigation of stellar proper motions of the TGAS catalogue and ground-based HSOY, UCAC5 and PMA catalogues derived by combining with the Gaia DR1 space data. This investigation concerns with only those stars of ground-based catalogues that are contained in the TGAS. We analyze components of the mutual rotation vector between these systems. It has been found that in all three cases of comparison of the HSOY, UCAC-5 and PMA catalogues with TGAS, the $ω_{y}$ component of the mutual rotation vector depends on magnitude nonlinearly within the range $9.5<m<11.5$, and has an amplitud…
The body of photometric and astrometric data on stars in the Galaxy has been growing very fast in recent years (Hipparcos/Tycho, OGLE-3, 2-Mass, DENIS, UCAC2, SDSS, RAVE, Pan Starrs, Hermes, ...) and in two years ESA will launch the Gaia satellite, which will measure astrometric data of unprecedented precision for a billion stars. On account of our position within the Galaxy and the complex observational biases that are built into most catalogues, dynamical models of the Galaxy are a prerequisite full exploitation of these catalogues. On account of the enormous detail in which we can observe t…
We present the compilation of the Fifth Catalogue of Nearby Stars (CNS5), based on astrometric and photometric data from Gaia EDR3 and Hipparcos, and supplemented with parallaxes from ground-based astrometric surveys carried out in the infrared. The aim of the CNS5 is to provide the most complete sample of objects in the solar neighbourhood. For all known stars and brown dwarfs in the 25 pc sphere around the Sun, basic astrometric and photometric parameters are given. Furthermore, we provide the colour-magnitude diagram and various luminosity functions of the stellar content in the solar neigh…
The historic plates of the "Carte du Ciel", an international cooperative project launched in 1887, offer valuable first-epoch material for the determination of absolute proper motions. We present the CdC-SF, an astrometric catalogue of positions and proper motions derived from the "Carte du Ciel" plates of the San Fernando zone, photographic material with a mean epoch of 1901.4 and a limiting magnitude of V~16, covering the declination range of -10deg < declination < -2deg. Digitization has been made using a conventional flatbed scanner. Special techniques have been developed to handle the com…
Based on a new version of the Hipparcos catalogue and an updated Geneva-Copenhagen survey of F and G dwarfs, we analyze the space velocity field of about 17000 single stars in the solar neighborhood. The main known clumps, streams, and branches (Pleiades, Hyades, Sirius, Coma Berenices, Hercules, Wolf 630-alpha Ceti, and Arcturus) have been identified using various approaches. The evolution of the space velocity field for F and G dwarfs has been traced as a function of the stellar age. We have managed to confirm the existence of the recently discovered KFR08 stream. We have found 19 Hipparcos …
We present the Mid-infrared stellar Diameters and Fluxes compilation Catalogue (MDFC) dedicated to long-baseline interferometry at mid-infrared wavelengths (3-13 mum). It gathers data for half a million stars, i.e. nearly all the stars of the Hipparcos-Tycho catalogue whose spectral type is reported in the SIMBAD database. We cross-match 26 databases to provide basic information, binarity elements, angular diameter, magnitude and flux in the near and mid-infrared, as well as flags that allow us to identify the potential calibrators. The catalogue covers the entire sky with 465 857 stars, mainl…
Taking advantage of the Gaia DR1, we combined TGAS parallaxes with the Tycho-2 and APASS photometry to calculate the star formation history (SFH) of the solar neighbourhood within 250 pc using the colour-magnitude diagram fitting technique. Our dynamically-evolved SFH is in excellent agreement with that calculated from the Hipparcos catalogue within 80 pc of the Sun, showing an enhanced star formation rate (SFR) in the past ~4 Gyr. We then correct the SFR for the disc thickening with age to obtain a SFR that is representative of the whole solar cylinder, and show that even with an extreme corr…
A new sample of stars, representative of the solar neighbourhood luminosity function, is constructed from the Hipparcos catalogue and the Fifth Catalogue of Nearby Stars. We have cross-matched to sources in the 2MASS catalogue so that for all stars individually determined Near Infrared photometry (NIR) is available on a homogeneous system (typically K_s). The spatial completeness of the sample has been carefully determined by statistical methods, and the NIR luminosity function of the stars has been derived by direct star counts. We find a local volume luminosity of 0.121 +/- 0.004 L_K_sun/(pc…
For more than 5000 stars with accurate parallaxes from the Hipparcos and Gaia DR1 Tycho-Gaia astrometric solution (TGAS), Tycho-2 photometry, interstellar polarization from eight catalogues and interstellar extinction from eight 3D maps the largest up to date comparison of the polarization and extinction is provided. The extinction maps give different estimations of the extinction and of the polarization efficiency as the polarization divided into extinction $P/A_V$ as well as of the percentage of the stars with the polarization efficiency higher than the limit of Serkowski $P/A_V>0.03$. Using…
