The maximum entropy approach operating with quite general entropy measure and constraint is considered. It is demonstrated that for a conditional or parametrized probability distribution $f(x|μ)$ there is a "universal" relation among the entropy rate and the functions appearing in the constraint. It is shown that the recently proposed variational formulation of the entropic functional can be obtained as a consequence of this relation, that is from the maximum entropy principle. This resolves certain puzzling points appeared in the variational approach.
We develop the method of Maximum Entropy (ME) as a technique to generate approximations to probability distributions. The central results consist in (a) justifying the use of relative entropy as the uniquely natural criterion to select a "best" approximation from within a family of trial distributions, and (b) to quantify the extent to which non-optimal trial distributions are ruled out. The Bogoliuvob variational method is shown to be included as a special case. As an illustration we apply our method to simple fluids. In a first use of the ME method the "exact" canonical distribution is appro…
Motivated by compartmental analysis in engineering and biophysical systems, we present a variational framework for the nonequilibrium thermodynamics of systems involving both distributed and discrete (finite dimensional) subsystems by specifically using the ideas of interconnected systems. We focus on the process of non-isothermal diffusion and show how the resulting form of the entropy equation naturally yields phenomenological expressions for the diffusion and entropy fluxes between two compartments, which results in generalized forms of Robin type interface conditions.
There has been interest in finding a general variational principle for non-equilibrium statistical mechanics. We give evidence that Maximum Caliber (Max Cal) is such a principle. Max Cal, a variant of Maximum Entropy, predicts dynamical distribution functions by maximizing a path entropy subject to dynamical constraints, such as average fluxes. We first show that Max Cal leads to standard near-equilibrium results -including the Green-Kubo relations, Onsager's reciprocal relations of coupled flows, and Prigogine's principle of minimum entropy production -in a way that is particularly simple. Mo…
We review here {\it Maximum Caliber} (Max Cal), a general variational principle for inferring distributions of paths in dynamical processes and networks. Max Cal is to dynamical trajectories what the principle of {\it Maximum Entropy} (Max Ent) is to equilibrium states or stationary populations. In Max Cal, you maximize a path entropy over all possible pathways, subject to dynamical constraints, in order to predict relative path weights. Many well-known relationships of Non-Equilibrium Statistical Physics -- such as the Green-Kubo fluctuation-dissipation relations, Onsager's reciprocal relatio…
A Unified Nonequilibrium Framework: Thermodynamic Distance, Dissipation, and Stationary Laws via Effective State Count, Variational Stationarity, and Thermodynamic Bounds
The relationship between three probability distributions and their maximizable entropy forms is discussed without postulating entropy property. For this purpose, the entropy I is defined as a measure of uncertainty of the probability distribution of a random variable x by a variational relationship, a definition underlying the maximization of entropy for corresponding distribution.
The four equations of stellar structure are reformulated as two alternate pairs of variational principles. Different thermodynamic representations lead to the same hydromechanical equations, but the thermal equations require, not the entropy, but the temperature as the thermal field variable. Our treatment emphasizes the hydrostatic energy and the entropy production rate of luminosity produced and transported. The conceptual and calculational advantages of integral over differential formulations of stellar structure are discussed along with the difficulties in describing stellar chemical evolu…
The variational approach usually used in phase field models (PFVA) is applied here to analyse complex irreversible processes such as thermoelectric (TE) effects and thermally driven mass transport (TDMT). Complex irreversible processes arise from the coupling effects between simple irreversible processes. Each simple irreversible process is assiciated with an entropy or energy density function. During complex irreversible processes with multiple fields present, this entropy or energy density function is assumed to be dependent on all independent field variables. Using the total entropy functio…
Purely dissipative evolution equations are often cast as gradient flow structures, $\dot{\mathbf{z}}=K(\mathbf{z})DS(\mathbf{z})$, where the variable $\mathbf{z}$ of interest evolves towards the maximum of a functional $S$ according to a metric defined by an operator $K$. While the functional often follows immediately from physical considerations (e.g., the thermodynamic entropy), the operator $K$ and the associated geometry does not necessarily so (e.g., Wasserstein geometry for diffusion). In this paper, we present a variational statement in the sense of maximum entropy production that direc…
We generalize several results of the classical theory of Thermodynamic Formalism by considering a compact metric space $M$ as the state space. We analyze the shift acting on $M^\mathbb{N}$ and consider a general a-priori probability for defining the Transfer (Ruelle) operator. We study potentials $A$ which can depend on the infinite set of coordinates in $M^\mathbb{N}.$ We define entropy and by its very nature it is always a nonpositive number. The concepts of entropy and transfer operator are linked. If M is not a finite set there exist Gibbs states with arbitrary negative value of entropy. I…
The General Equation for Non-Equilibrium Reversible-Irreversible Coupling (GENERIC) provides structure of mesoscopic multiscale dynamics that guarantees emergence of equilibrium states. Similarly, a lift of the GENERIC structure to iterated cotangent bundles, called a rate GENERIC, guarantees emergence of the vector fields that generate the approach to equilibrium. Moreover, the rate GENERIC structure also extends Onsager's variational principle. The MaxEnt (Maximum Entropy) principle in the GENERIC structure becomes the Onsager variational principle in the rate GENERIC structure. In the absen…
In ordinary statistical mechanics the Boltzmann-Shannon entropy is related to the Maxwell-Bolzmann distribution $p_i$ by means of a twofold link. The first link is differential and is offered by the Jaynes Maximum Entropy Principle. The second link is algebraic and imposes that both the entropy and the distribution must be expressed in terms of the same function in direct and inverse form. Indeed, the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution $p_i$ is expressed in terms of the exponential function, while the Boltzmann-Shannon entropy is defined as the mean value of $-\ln(p_i)$. In generalized statistical…
The correlation entropy as a functional of radial distribution function $g(r)$ (or the total correlation function $h(r)=g(r)-1$) in classical fluids has been obtained from the second Legendre transform of the grand potential. We focus on the correlation entropy difference between the two typical functionals in the mean spherical approximation (MSA) and the hypernetted chain (HNC) approximation. While the entropy functional difference between these approximations is of a simple form, the diagrammatic approaches in the liquid state theory are quite different from each other. Here we clarified th…
