We study the tunneling of a spin polarized Fermi gas in a three-dimensional double well potential, focusing on the time dynamics starting from an initial state in which there is an imbalance in the number of particles in the two wells. Although fermions in different doublets of the double well tunnel with different frequencies, we point out that (incoherent) oscillations of a large number of particles can arise, as a consequence of the presence of transverse degrees of freedom. Estimates of the doublet structure and of the occupation of transverse eigenstates for a realistic experimental setup are provided.
We study the exact dynamics of a one-dimensional spin-polarized gas of fermions in a double-well potential at zero and finite temperature. Despite the system is made of non-interacting fermions, its dynamics can be quite complex, showing strongly aperiodic spatio-temporal patterns during the tunneling. The extension of these results to the case of mixtures of spin-polarized fermions in interaction with self-trapped Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) at zero temperature is considered as well. In this case we show that the fermionic dynamics remains qualitatively similar to the one observed in abs…
We perform a detailed experimental study of the band excitations and tunneling properties of ultracold fermions in optical lattices. Employing a novel multi-band spectroscopy for fermionic atoms we can measure the full band structure and tunneling energy with high accuracy. In an attractive Bose-Fermi mixture we observe a significant reduction of the fermionic tunneling energy, which depends on the relative atom numbers. We attribute this to an interaction-induced increase of the lattice depth due to self-trapping of the atoms.
We report the realization of correlated, density-dependent tunneling for fermionic 40K atoms trapped in an optical lattice. By appropriately tuning the frequency difference between a pair of Raman beams applied to a spin-polarized gas, simultaneous spin transitions and tunneling events are induced that depend on the relative occupations of neighboring lattice sites. Correlated spin-flip tunneling is spectroscopically resolved using gases prepared in opposite spin states, and the inferred Hubbard interaction energy is compared with a tight-binding prediction. We show that the laser-induced corr…
The spectrum of collective excitations of degenerate partially polarized spin-1/2 fermions is considered. The spin-up fermions and the spin-down fermions are considered as different fluids. Corresponding two-fluid hydrodynamics consistent with a non-linear Pauli equation is suggested. An equation of state for the spin current caused by the distribution of particles on different energy levels is suggested for the degenerate regime, where the spin current is caused by the Pauli blocking. Spectrum of three waves is found as a solution of the hydrodynamic equations: two sound waves and one spin wa…
We study ultracold fermionic atoms trapped in a three dimensional optical lattice by combining the real-space dynamical mean-field approach with continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo simulations. For a spin-unpolarized system we show results the density and pair potential profile in the trap for a range of temperatures. We discuss how a polarized superfluid state is spatially realized in the spin-polarized system with harmonic confinement at low temperatures and present the local particle density, local magnetization, and pair potential.
In the present paper we investigate the Tonks-Girardeau gas confined in a harmonic trap at finite temperature with thermal Bose-Fermi mapping method. The pair distribution, density distribution, reduced one-body density matrix, the occupations number of natural orbitals, and momentum distribution are evaluated. In the whole temperature regime the pair distribution and density distribution exhibit the same properties as those of polarized free Fermions because both of them depend on the modulus of wavefunction rather than wavefunction. While the reduced one-body density matrix, the natural orbi…
A comprehensive analysis of the dynamics of two Rydberg-dressed particles (bosons or fermions) tunneling from a potential well into open space is provided. We show that the dominant decay mechanism switches from sequential tunneling to pair tunneling when the interaction strength is tuned below a certain critical value. These critical values can be modified by tuning the effective range of the interaction potential. By comparing the dynamics for bosons and fermions, we show that there are significant differences between the two cases. In particular, increasing the interaction range modifies th…
We have studied quasi one-dimensional few-particle systems consisting of one to six ultracold fermionic atoms in two different spin states with attractive interactions. We probe the system by deforming the trapping potential and by observing the tunneling of particles out of the trap. For even particle numbers we observe a tunneling behavior which deviates from uncorrelated single-particle tunneling indicating the existence of pair correlations in the system. From the tunneling timescales we infer the differences in interaction energies of systems with different number of particles which show …
Motivated by a recent experiment at MIT, we consider the collision of two clouds of spin-polarized atomic Fermi gases close to a Feshbach resonance. We explain why two dilute gas clouds, with underlying attractive interactions between their constituents, bounce off each other in the strongly interacting regime. Our hydrodynamic analysis, in excellent agreement with experiment, gives strong evidence for a metastable many-body state with effective repulsive interactions.
We study inelastic two-body relaxation in a spin-polarized ultracold Fermi gas in the presence of a p-wave Feshbach resonance. It is shown that in reduced dimensionalities, especially in the quasi-one-dimensional case, the enhancement of the inelastic rate constant on approach to the resonance is strongly suppressed compared to three dimensions. This may open promising paths for obtaining novel many-body states.
We analyze the nature of quantum phase transition to a superfluid state of flexible chains in a gas of polar bosonic molecules confined in a stack of $N$ identical 1d ("cigar" type) optical lattice layers and polarized perpendicularly to the layers. Monte Carlo simulations within the $J$-current model show that, in the absence of the inter-tube tunneling, the transition to the $N$-layered superfluid is in the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless universality class in the one-particle density matrix channel. The inter-layer tunneling changes it to the $q=N$ 2d Potts universality. The low energy fiel…
Usually, hydrodynamic equations are restricted by the continuity and Euler equations. However, the account of the higher moments of the distribution function gives better description of the kinetic properties. Therefore, the pressure tensor evolution equation (PTEE) is derived for spin polarized degenerate fermions. Moreover, it is found that the pressure tensor enters the interaction term generalizing the p-wave interaction in the Euler equation. Hence, the PTEE allows to give a more accurate description of the interaction in Euler equation. Next, the interaction is calculated for the PTEE. T…
We investigate the macroscopic quantum tunneling of fermionic superfluids in the two-dimensional BCS-BEC crossover by using an effective tunneling energy which explicitly depends on the condensate fraction and the chemical potential of the system. We compare the mean-field effective tunneling energy with the beyond-mean-field one finding that the mean-field tunneling energy is not reliable in the BEC regime of the crossover. Then we solve the Josephson equations of the population imbalance and the relative phase calculating the frequency of tunneling oscillation both in the linear regime and i…
Atom-number states are a valuable resource for ultracold chemistry, atom interferometry and quantum information processing. Recent experiments have achieved their deterministic preparation in trapped few-fermion systems. We analyze the tunneling decay of these states, both in terms of the survival probability, and the non-escape probability, which can be extracted from measurements of the full counting statistics. At short times, the survival probability exhibits deviations from the exponential law. The decay is governed by the multi-particle Zeno time which exhibits a signature of quantum sta…
I discuss the advantages and disadvantages of several procedures, some known and some new, for constructing stationary states within the mean field approximation for a system with pairing correlations and unequal numbers spin-up and spin-down fermions, using the two chemical potentials framework. One procedure in particular appears to have significant physics advantages over previously suggested in the literature computational frameworks. Moreover, this framework is applicable to study strongly polarized superfluid fermion systems with arbitrarily large polarizations and with arbitrary total p…
We study by Monte Carlo methods the thermodynamics of a spin polarized gas of non-relativistic fermions in 1+1 dimensions. The main result of this work is that our action suffers no significant sign problem for any spin polarization in the region relevant for dilute degenerate fermi gases. This lack of sign problem allows us to study attractive spin polarized fermions non-perturbatively at spin polarizations not previously explored. For some parameters values we verify results previously obtained by methods which include an uncontrolled step like complex Langevin and/or analytical continuation…
We investigate the transport of a Fermi gas with unitarity-limited interactions across the superfluid phase transition, probing its response to a direct current (dc) drive through a tunnel junction. As the superfluid critical temperature is crossed from below, we observe the evolution from a highly nonlinear to an Ohmic conduction characteristics, associated with the critical breakdown of the Josephson dc current induced by pair condensate depletion. Moreover, we reveal a large and dominant anomalous contribution to resistive currents, which reaches its maximum at the lowest attained temperatu…
Most recently, path integral molecular dynamics (PIMD) has been successfully applied to perform simulations of identical bosons and fermions by B. Hirshberg et al.. In this work, we demonstrate that PIMD can be developed to calculate Green's function and extract momentum distribution for spin-polarized fermions. In particular, we show that the momentum distribution calculated by PIMD has potential application to numerous quantum systems, such as cold atom simulation of Mott insulator in Fermi-Hubbard model.
