We propose a general method for tailoring the current distribution of relativistic electron bunches. The technique relies on a recently proposed method to exchange the longitudinal phase space emittance with one of the transverse emittances. The method consists of transversely shaping the bunch and then converting its transverse profile into a current profile via a transverse-to-longitudinal phase-space-exchange beamline. We show that it is possible to tailor the current profile to follow, in principle, any desired distributions. We demonstrate, via computer simulations, the application of the method to generate trains of microbunches with tunable spacing and linearly-ramped current profiles. We also briefly explore potential applications of the technique.
An asynchronous accelerator is described, in which the principle of its operation permits the active longitudinal bunch compression of accelerated proton beams, to overcome the space charge limitation effects of intense bunches. It is shown that accelerated bunches from an RFQ linac can be adapted for Asynchronac injection for a multiple of choices in the acceleration frequencies of the RFQ and the Asynchronac. The offered new type of accelerator system is especially suitable to accelerate proton beams for up to 100MeV energy and hundreds of mA average current.
We examine the stability of intense flat bunches in barrier buckets used in the Recycler. We consider some common stationary distributions and show that they would be unstable against rigid dipole oscillations. We then discuss an analytical model for the line density that best describes measured bunch profiles. We include space charge in this model to predict the bunch intensity at which Landau damping would be lost. The dependence of this threshold on the bunch length is studied and related to the results of an experimental study with shorter bunch lengths. The threshold for the microwave ins…
Which gain and phase have to be set for a bunch-by-bunch transverse damper, and at which chromaticity it is better to stay? These questions are considered for three models: the two-particle model with possible quadrupole wake, the author's Nested Head-Tail Vlasov solver with a broadband impedance, and the same with the LHC impedance model.
A new class of self-consistent 6-D phase space stationary distributions is constructed both analytically and numerically. The beam is then mismatched longitudinally and/or transversely, and we explore the beam stability and halo formation for the case of 3-D axisymmetric beam bunches using particle-in-cell simulations. We concentrate on beams with bunch length-to-width ratios varying from 1 to 5, which covers the typical range of the APT linac parameters. We find that the longitudinal halo forms first for comparable longitudinal and transverse mismatches. An interesting coupling phenomenon - a…
Transverse instability of a bunched beam is investigated with synchrotron oscillations, space charge, and resistive wall wakefield taken into account. Boxcar model is used for all-round analysis, and Gaussian distribution is invoked for details. The beam spectrum, instability growth rate and effects of chromaticity are studied in a wide range of parameters, both with head-tail and collective bunch interactions included. Effects of the internal bunch oscillations on the of collective instabilities is investigated thoroughly. Landau damping caused by the space charge tune spread is discussed, an…
In this paper, we study single-bunch instabilities observed in the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS). According to the linearized Vlasov theory, radial or azimuthal mode-coupling instabilities result from a coupling of bunch-oscillation modes, which belong to either the same or adjacent azimuthal modes, respectively. We show that both instability mechanisms exist in the SPS by applying the Oide-Yokoya approach to compute van Kampen modes for the realistic longitudinal impedance model of the SPS. The results agree with macroparticle simulations and are consistent with beam measurements. In pa…
Longitudinal collective modes of a bunched beam with a repulsive inductive impedance (the space charge below transition or the chamber inductance above it) are analytically described by means of reduction of the linearized Vlasov equation to a parameter-less integral equation. For any multipolarity, the discrete part of the spectrum is found to consist of infinite number of modes with real tunes, which limit point is the incoherent zero-amplitude frequency. In other words, notwithstanding the RF bucket nonlinearity and potential well distortion, the Landau damping is lost. Hence, even a tiny c…
X-band accelerator for multi-bunches has been a new way to produce high luminosity and energy efficiency bunches. As the smaller size and multi-bunches, the wakefield is more severe in X-band accelerator, unless some means of strongly suppressing of the transverse wakefield is adopted in the design of the accelerating structure. To calculate the transverse wakefield of the structure, wakefield calculated through the double circuit model has been demonstrated and its application in the structure designed.
The transverse bunch spectrum and the transverse decoherence/recoherence following an initial bunch offset are important phenomena in synchrotrons and storage rings, and are widely used for beam and lattice measurements. Incoherent shifts of the particles betatron frequency and of the synchrotron frequency modify the transverse spectrum and the bunch decoherence. In this study we analyze the effects of transverse space charge and of the rf nonlinearity on the decoherence signals. The transverse bunch decoherence and the resulting coherent spectra are measured in the SIS18 synchrotron at GSI Da…
Recent experiments [1] have explored the use of a free-electron laser (FEL) as a buncher for a microwave two-beam accelerator, and the subsequent driving of a standing-wave rf output cavity. Here we present a deeper analysis of the longitudinal dynamics of the electron bunches as they are transported from the end of the FEL and through the output cavity. In particular, we examine the effect of the transport region and cavity aperture to filter the bunched portion of the beam. [1] T. Lefevre, et. al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 84 (2000), 1188.
We demonstrate a novel scheme for imposing and removing large energy chirp on relativistic electron bunches relying on the transverse-to-longitudinal mixing accomplished with a set of transverse deflecting cavities. The working principles of the new concept are explained using the first order matrix formalism in the approximation of the linear single-particle dynamics. The scheme demonstrates versatility regarding the average beam energy, and hence, positioning along the accelerator beamline. The performance of the scheme is numerically investigated with the elegant particle tracking code. It …
Transverse coherent transition radiation (TCTR) emitted by a relativistic particle bunch traversing a conducting surface is analyzed. The bunch emits dipole-like radiation in the direction transverse to the bunch axis when the beam radius is smaller than the radiation wavelength. The radiation wavelength is defined by the longitudinal structure of the particle bunch. The particular case of proton bunches modified by propagation in plasma, but still carrying an unmodulated current is considered. Radius-modulated bunches with a constant current emit axially symmetric radiation. Hosed bunches emi…
Bunches in the Tevatron are known to exhibit longitudinal oscillations which persist indefinitely. These oscillations are colloquially called "dancing bunches". Although the dancing bunches do not cause single bunch emittance growth or beam loss at injection, it leads to bunch lengthening at collisions. In operations, a longitudinal damper has been built which stops this dance and damps out coupled bunch modes. Recent theoretical work predicts that the dance can also be stopped by an appropriate change in the bunch distribution. This paper shows the Tevatron experiments which support this theo…
We report on the experimental generation of a train of subpicosecond electron bunches. The bunch train generation is accomplished using a beamline capable of exchanging the coordinates between the horizontal and longitudinal degrees of freedom. An initial beam consisting of a set of horizontally-separated beamlets is converted into a train of bunches temporally separated with tunable bunch duration and separation. The experiment reported in this Letter unambiguously demonstrates the conversion process and its versatility.
Electron storage rings of GeV energy with laser pulse stacking cavities are promising intense sources of polarised hard photons which, via pair production, can be used to generate polarised positron beams. Dynamics of electron bunches circulating in a storage ring and interacting with high-power laser pulses is studied both analytically and by simulation. Common features and differences in the behaviour of bunches interacting with an extremely high power laser pulse and with a moderate pulse are discussed. Also considerations on particular lattice designs for Compton gamma rings are presented.
Longitudinal properties of electron bunches are critical for the performance of a wide range of scientific facilities. In a free-electron laser, for example, the existing diagnostics only provide very limited longitudinal information of the electron bunch during online tuning and optimization. We leverage the power of artificial intelligence to build a neural network model using experimental data, in order to bring the destructive longitudinal phase space (LPS) diagnostics online virtually and improve the existing current profile online diagnostics which uses a coherent transition radiation (C…
Longitudinally hollow bunches provide one means to mitigate the impact of transverse space charge. The hollow distributions are created via dipolar parametric excitation during acceleration in CERN's Proton Synchrotron Booster. We present simulation work and beam measurements. Particular emphasis is given to the alleviation of space charge effects on the long injection plateau of the downstream Proton Synchrotron machine, which is the main goal of this study.
The E-203 collaboration is testing a device on FACET at SLAC to measure the longitudinal profile of electron bunches using Smith-Purcell radiation. At FACET the electron bunches have an energy of 20~GeV and a duration of a few hundred femtoseconds. Smith-Purcell radiation is emitted when a charged particle passes close to the surface of a metallic grating. We have studied the stability of the measurement from pulse to pulse and the resolution of the measure depending on the number of gratings used.
The RF systems installed in synchrotrons can be used to change the longitudinal beam characteristics. 'RF gymnastics' designates manipulations of the RF parameters aimed at providing such non-trivial changes. Some keep the number of bunches constant while changing bunch length, energy spread, emittance, or distance between bunches. Others are used to change the number of bunches. After recalling the basics of longitudinal beam dynamics in a hadron synchrotron, this paper deals with the most commonly used gymnastics. Their principle is described as well as their performance and limitations.
A transverse deflecting structure (TDS) is a well-known device for characterizing the longitudinal properties of an electron bunch in a linear accelerator. The standard use of such a cavity involves streaking the bunch along a transverse axis and analysing the image on a screen downstream to find the bunch length and slice properties along the other transverse axis. A novel X-band deflecting structure, which will allow the polarization of the deflecting field to be adjusted, is currently being designed as part of a collaboration between CERN, DESY and PSI. This new design will allow bunches to…
Free-electron lasers (FELs) operate at wavelengths from millimeter waves through hard x-rays. At x-ray wavelengths, FELs typically rely on self-amplified spontaneous emission (SASE). Typical SASE emission contains multiple temporal "spikes" which limit the longitudinal coherence of the optical output; hence, alternate schemes that improve on the longitudinal coherence of the SASE emission are of interest. In this paper, we consnider electron bunches that are shorter than the SASE spike separation. In such cases, the spontaneously generated radiation consists of a single optical pulse with bett…
We demonstrate compression of 95 keV, space-charge-dominated electron bunches to sub-100 fs durations. These bunches have sufficient charge (200 fC) and are of sufficient quality to capture a diffraction pattern with a single shot, which we demonstrate by a diffraction experiment on a polycrystalline gold foil. Compression is realized by means of velocity bunching as a result of a velocity chirp, induced by the oscillatory longitudinal electric field of a 3 GHz radio-frequency cavity. The arrival time jitter is measured to be 80 fs.
Beam-driven collinear wakefield accelerators (CWAs) that operate by using slow-wave structures or plasmas hold great promise toward reducing the size of contemporary accelerators. Sustainable acceleration of charged particles to high energies in the CWA relies on using field-generating relativistic electron bunches with a highly asymmetric peak current profile and a large energy chirp. A new approach to obtaining such bunches has been proposed and illustrated with the accelerator design supported by particle tracking simulations. It has been shown that the required particle distribution in the…
The spectrum of electromagnetic fields satisfying perfectly conducting boundary conditions in a segment of a straight beam pipe with a circular cross-section is discussed as a function of various source models. These include charged bunches that move along the axis of the pipe with constant speed for which an exact solution to the initial-boundary value problem for Maxwell's equations in the beam pipe is derived. In the ultra-relativistic limit all longitudinal components of the fields tend to zero and the spectral content of the transverse fields and average total electromagnetic energy cross…
We report on the successful experimental generation of electron bunches with ramped current profiles. The technique relies on impressing nonlinear correlations in the longitudinal phase space using a superconducing radiofrequency linear accelerator operating at two frequencies and a current-enhancing dispersive section. The produced $\sim 700$-MeV bunches have peak currents of the order of a kilo-Ampère. Data taken for various accelerator settings demonstrate the versatility of the method and in particular its ability to produce current profiles that have a quasi-linear dependency on the longi…
We discuss simulations and experiments on creating micro-bunch beams for generating narrow band THz radiation at the Fermilab Accelerator Science and Technology (FAST) facility. The low-energy electron beamline at FAST consists of a photoinjector-based RF gun, two L-band superconducting accelerating cavities, a chicane, and a beam dump. The electron bunches are lengthened with cavity phases set off-crest for better longitudinal separation and then micro-bunched with a slit-mask installed in the chicane. We carried out the experiments with 30 MeV electron beams and detected signals of the micro…
In the present design of the TESLA Linear Collider with integrated X-ray Laser Facility it is necessary that 1 ms long bunch trains with about 10000 bunches are generated and distributed to several free electron laser (FEL) beam lines. The different scientific applications of the X-ray FELs need specific filling patterns of the bunches in the bunch train. It is shown that a fast switch-yard based on a superconducting transverse mode cavity can be used to generate the required bunch pattern in a flexible way while keeping the beam loading in the main linear accelerator constant. The conceptual …
The transverse self-modulation of ultra-relativistic, long lepton bunches in high-density plasmas is explored through full-scale particle-in-cell simulations. We demonstrate that long SLAC-type electron and positron bunches can become strongly self-modulated over centimeter distances, leading to wake excitation in the blowout regime with accelerating fields in excess of 20 GV/m. We show that particles energy variations exceeding 10 GeV can occur in meter-long plasmas. We find that the self-modulation of positively and negatively charged bunches differ when the blowout is reached. Seeding the s…
The possibility of charged particle acceleration by a longitudinal wake field excited in plasma by an electron bunch and a train of electron bunches. The exact solution of the stationary nonlinear self-consistent interaction of a monoenergetic relativistic bunch with cold plasma is obtained. It is shown that under certain conditions a self-acceleration of the bunch tail electrons up to high energies is possible.
We describe a simple mechanism to transform bunches with matched longitudinal phase-space distributions from one RF system to a matched distribution of a second RF system operating on a different harmonic and with a different accelerating voltage. The process is reversible and the longitudinal emittance is preserved. Simple equations that characterize the procedure are given and applications are discussed. In particular this method can be used to rapidly shorten the bunch length in proton rings.
The electromagnetic wakefields excited by the bunches of charged particles in the particle accelerators may cause instability in the longitudinal and transverse motion of these bunches leading to the beam loss. These multibunch effects need to be analyzed carefully in an accelerator design to ensure the stability of the charged particle beams. This paper presents an analytical method describing the multibunch transverse instabilities for ultrarelativistic electron bunches whose energy changes linearly through the accelerating section of interest. Fast algorithmic implementations of this analyt…
In previous work [1] general expressions, valid for arbitrary bunch lengths, were derived for the wakefields of corrugated structures with flat geometry, such as is used in the RadiaBeam/LCLS dechirper. However, the bunch at the end of linac-based X-ray FELs--like the LCLS--is extremely short, and for short bunches the wakes can be considerably simplified. In this work, we first derive analytical approximations to the short-range wakes. These are generalized wakes, in the sense that their validity is not limited to a small neighborhood of the symmetry axis, but rather extends to arbitrary tran…
It is shown that high accelerating gradient can be obtained in a specially constructed system of electron (positron) bunches, moving in cold plasma, with definite density. These combined bunch systems do not generate the wake fields behind them and can pass through the plasma column in a periodic sequence. The consideration is carried out numericaly and analyticaly in one dimensional approach, (which can be applied to finite system when its transverse dimensions are larger than plasma wave length, divided by $2π$). The possibilities of the experimental tests by measuring the predicted energy ga…
In this paper we revisit the calculation of the emittance dilution of charged particle bunches due to collimator wakefield effects in the paraxial approximation. We also compare analytical results with numerical simulations considering the example of a collimator structure installed in the Accelerator Test Facility 2 (ATF2) at KEK
Plasma accelerators driven by intense laser or particle beams provide gigavolt-per-meter accelerating fields, promising to drastically shrink particle accelerators for high-energy physics and photon science. Applications such as linear colliders and free-electron lasers (FELs) require high energy and energy efficiency, but also high stability and beam quality. The latter includes low energy spread, which can be achieved by precise beam loading of the plasma wakefield using longitudinally shaped bunches, resulting in efficient and uniform acceleration. However, the plasma wavelength, which sets…
Transverse mode coupling instability of bunched beam is investigated in the paper at different form of the bunches with space charge included. Equation of transverse motion of the bunch in parabolic potential well of synchrotron oscillations is derived and analysed. The bunch of constant density (flat bunch) is examined in detail to make comparison with the square well model. It is shown that both models result in very close instability thresholds of the flat bunch. Then different form bunches are investigated in the parabolic potential well. It is shown that decrease of the bunch r.m.s length…
Many front-end applications of electron linear accelerators rely on the production of temporally-compressed bunches. The shortening of electron bunches is often realized with magnetic bunch compressors located in high-energy sections of accelerators. Magnetic compression is subject to collective effects including space charge and self interaction via coherent synchrotron radiation. In this paper we explore the application of magnetic compression to low-energy ($\sim 40$ MeV), high-charge (nC) electron bunches with low normalized transverse emittances ($< 5$ $μ$m).
A system was developed for bunch-by-bunch detection of transverse proton and antiproton coherent oscillations based on the signal from a single beam-position monitor (BPM) located in a region of the ring with large amplitude functions. The signal is digitized over a large number of turns and Fourier-analyzed offline with a dedicated algorithm. To enhance the signal, the beam is excited with band-limited noise for about one second, and this was shown not to significantly affect the circulating beams even at high luminosity. The system is used to measure betatron tunes of individual bunches and …
Temporally-shaped electron bunches at ultrafast time scales are foreseen to support an array of applications including the development of small-footprint accelerator-based coherent light sources or as probes for, e.g., ultrafast electron-diffraction. We demonstrate a method where a transversely-segmented electron bunch produced via photoemission from a transversely-patterned laser distribution is transformed into an electron bunch with modulated temporal distribution. In essence, the presented transformation enables the mapping of the transverse laser distribution on a photocathode surface to …
We have considered the possibility of using coherent Smith-Purcell radiation for the single-shot determination of the longitudinal profile of 50 fs (FWHM) long electron bunches. This length is typical for the bunches currently produced by Laser Wakefield Acceleration and is at the limit of what is achievable by alternative techniques, such as Electro-Optic sampling. It is concluded that there are no obstacles, either theoretical or experimental, in the implementation of this technique. A set of three gratings, with periods of 15, 85 and 500 micrometres, will produce detectable energy in the wa…
We suggest a novel method for injection of electrons into the acceleration phase of particle accelerators, producing low emittance beams appropriate even for the demanding high energy Linear Collider specifications. In this paper we work out the injection into the acceleration phase of the wake field in a plasma behind a high intensity laser pulse, taking advantage of the laser polarization and focusing. With the aid of catastrophe theory we categorize the injection dynamics. The scheme uses the structurally stable regime of transverse wake wave breaking, when electron trajectory self-intersec…
Recent studies have shown that the prospects for significantly increasing bunch intensities in the LHC for the luminosity upgrade (HL-LHC) may be severely limited by the available cryogenic cooling capacity and the electron-cloud (EC) driven beam instability. However, it is planned that during the HL-LHC era the bunch intensities in the LHC will go up by nearly a factor of two compared to the LHC-design values. This motivates the exploration of additional EC mitigation techniques that can be adopted in addition to those already in place. Preliminary simulations indicated that long flat bunches…
A bunching system is proposed for the initial stage of CTF3 which consists of one (two) 3 GHz prebunchers and one 3 GHz travelling wave (TW) buncher with variable phase velocities. The electron beam is emitted from a 140 KV DC gun. Since the macropulse beam current (3.5 A) at the exit of the TW buncher is rather high, inside the TW buncher one has to take the beam loading effect into consideration. By using PARMELA, it is shown numerically that the bunching system can provide the bunches whose properties satisfy the design requirement of CTF3. The 0.8 m long TW buncher working at 2pi/3 mode ha…
Drive particle beams in linear or weakly nonlinear regimes of the plasma wakefield accelerator quickly reach a radial equilibrium with the wakefield, which is described in detail for the first time. The equilibrium beam state and self-consistent wakefields are obtained by combining analytical relationships, numerical integration, and first-principle simulations. In the equilibrium state, the beam density is strongly peaked near the axis, the beam radius is constant along the beam, and longitudinal variation of the focusing strength is balanced by varying beam emittance. The transverse momentum…
We revise a previous version of this paper proposing a method to transfer emittances from the transverse planes to the longitudinal. It turned out the system showed non-Hamiltonian behavior because the longitudinal component of the transverse electric field at ends of the transverse resonator were not included in the model. Including those fields the 6D emittance is conserved. We review the mechanism behind the emittance conservation. It is still possible to produce an emittance transfer with the RF quadrupole field setting the tunes on synchro-betatron resonance for a short period of time the…
A method is presented that enables to compute the parameters of matched beams with space charge in cyclotrons with emphasis on the effect of the transverse-longitudinal coupling. Equations describing the transverse-longitudinal coupling and corresponding tune-shifts in first order are derived for the model of an azimuthally symmetric cyclotron. The eigenellipsoid of the beam is calculated and the transfer matrix is transformed into block-diagonal form. The influence of the slope of the phase curve on the transverse-longitudinal coupling is accounted for. The results are generalized and numeric…
Studies were made into the arise and an evolution of the beam breakup (BBU) instability in a rectangular dielectric resonator under excitation by a sequence of relativistic electron bunches. The dielectric resonator is a metal rectangular waveguide $R_{26}$ $(45mm\times 90mm)$ with Teflon dielectric slabs $8.2mm$ thick (dielectric constant $\varepsilon=2.051$) located along the wide side of the resonator. The wavelength of the $LM_{21}$ operating mode having a symmetric profile of the longitudinal electric field component is $53.2mm$. The electron energy of bunches is $4.5MeV$ , the charge of …
An experimental program to demonstrate a novel phase space manipulation in which the horizontal and longitudinal emittances of a particle beam are exchanged has been completed at the Fermilab A0 Photoinjector. A new beamline, consisting of a TM110 deflecting mode cavity flanked by two horizontally dispersive doglegs has been installed. We report on the first direct observation of transverse and longitudinal emittance exchange.
