对于Pearson(Ord)族的绝对连续(整数值)r. v. $X$,我们证明了在自然矩条件下,阶为$k$的Stein型协方差恒等式成立(cf. [Goldstein and Reinert,J. Theoret. Probab. 18(2005)237- 260])。 Theoret. Probab. 8(1995)23- 30];另见[Houdré和Pérez-Abreu,Ann. Probab. 23(1995)400- 419]中关于Wiener和Poisson过程的相应结果)。并给出了一些应用实例。
英文摘要:
For an absolutely continuous (integer-valued) r.v. $X$ of the Pearson (Ord) family, we show that, under natural moment conditions, a Stein-type covariance identity of order $k$ holds (cf. [Goldstein and Reinert, J. Theoret. Probab. 18 (2005) 237--260]). This identity is closely related to the corresponding sequence of orthogonal polynomials, obtained by a Rodrigues-type formula, and provides convenient expressions for the Fourier coefficients of an arbitrary function. Application of the covariance identity yields some novel expressions for the corresponding lower variance bounds for a function of the r.v. $X$, expressions that seem to be known only in particular cases (for the Normal, see [Houdré and Kagan, J. Theoret. Probab. 8 (1995) 23--30]; see also [Houdré and Pérez-Abreu, Ann. Probab. 23 (1995) 400--419] for corresponding results related to the Wiener and Poisson processes). Some applications are also given.
In this paper, we address the problem of estimating a covariance matrix of a multivariate Gaussian distribution, relative to a Stein loss function, from a decision theoretic point of view. We investigate the case where the covariance matrix is invertible and the case when it is non--invertible in a unified approach.
We propose probabilistic representations for inverse Stein operators (i.e. solutions to Stein equations) under general conditions; in particular we deduce new simple expressions for the Stein kernel. These representations allow to deduce uniform and non-uniform Stein factors (i.e. bounds on solutions to Stein equations) and lead to new covariance identities expressing the covariance between arbitrary functionals of an arbitrary {univariate} target in terms of a weighted covariance of the derivatives of the functionals. Our weights are explicit, easily computable in most cases, and expressed in…
Correlation matrices are standardized covariance matrices. They form an affine space of symmetric matrices defined by setting the diagonal entries to one. We study the geometry of maximum likelihood estimation for this model and linear submodels that encode additional symmetries. We also consider the problem of minimizing two closely related functions of the covariance matrix: the Stein's loss and the symmetrized Stein's loss. Unlike the Gaussian log-likelihood these two functions are convex and hence admit a unique positive definite optimum. Some of our results hold for general affine covaria…
The Neyman-Pearson (NP) binary classification paradigm constrains the more severe type of error (e.g., the type I error) under a preferred level while minimizing the other (e.g., the type II error). This paradigm is suitable for applications such as severe disease diagnosis, fraud detection, among others. A series of NP classifiers have been developed to guarantee the type I error control with high probability. However, these existing classifiers involve a sample splitting step: a mixture of class 0 and class 1 observations to construct a scoring function and some left-out class 0 observations…
We obtain explicit error bounds for the $d$-dimensional normal approximation on hyperrectangles for a random vector that has a Stein kernel, or admits an exchangeable pair coupling, or is a non-linear statistic of independent random variables or a sum of $n$ locally dependent random vectors. We assume the approximating normal distribution has a non-singular covariance matrix. The error bounds vanish even when the dimension $d$ is much larger than the sample size $n$. We prove our main results using the approach of Götze (1991) in Stein's method, together with modifications of an estimate of An…
Let $X_1,\ldots,X_n$ be a random sample from the Gamma distribution with density $f(x)=λ^αx^{α-1}e^{-λx}/Γ(α)$, $x>0$, where both $α>0$ (the shape parameter) and $λ>0$ (the reciprocal scale parameter) are unknown. The main result shows that the uniformly minimum variance unbiased estimator (UMVUE) of the shape parameter, $α$, exists if and only if $n\geq 4$; moreover, it has finite variance if and only if $n\geq 6$. More precisely, the form of the UMVUE is given for all parametric functions $α$, $λ$, $1/α$ and $1/λ$. Furthermore, a highly efficient estimating procedure for the two-parameter Be…
