The spectral problem on a periodic domain with cracks is studied. An asymptotic form of dispersion relations is calculated under assumption that the opening of the cracks is small.
In the context of elastic wave propagation in damaged solids, an analytical approach for scattering of antiplane waves by two-dimensional periodic arrays of cracks is developed. Before considering the study of arrays of cracks, the scattering of an antiplane wave by a flat crack is first studied. Then, using the representation formula for the scattered displacement by a flat and by considering the periodicity condition of the crack-spacing, a boundary integral equation is obtained for the crack face displacement of the reference crack. Numerical results for the reflection and transmission coef…
We analyse an asymptotic low-dimensional model of anti-plane shear in a thin bi-material strip containing a periodic array of interfacial cracks. Both ideal and non-ideal interfaces are considered. We find that the previously derived asymptotic models display a degree of inaccuracy in predicting standing wave eigenfrequencies and suggest an improvement to the asymptotic model to address this discrepancy. Computations demonstrate that the correction to the standing wave eigenfrequencies greatly improve the accuracy of the low-dimensional model.
We consider a periodic strip in the plane and the associated quantum waveguide with Dirichlet boundary conditions. We analyse finite segments of the waveguide consisting of $L$ periodicity cells, equipped with periodic boundary conditions at the ``new'' boundaries. Our main result is that the distance between the first and second eigenvalue of such a finite segment behaves like $L^{-2}$.
The Laplace operator is considered for waveguides perturbed by a periodic structure consisting of N congruent obstacles spanning the waveguide. Neumann boundary conditions are imposed on the periodic structure, and either Neumann or Dirichlet conditions on the guide walls. It is proven that there are at least N (resp. N-1) trapped modes in the Neumann case (resp. Dirichlet case) under fairly general hypotheses, including the special case where the obstacles consist of line segments placed parallel to the waveguide walls. This work should be viewed as an extension of "Periodic structures on wav…
It is proved that small periodic singular perturbation of a cylindrical waveguide surface may open a gap in the continuous spectrum of the Dirichlet problem for the Laplace operator. If the perturbation period is long and the caverns in the cylinder are small, the gap certainly opens.
The interactions between linear elastic waves and a nonlinear crack with finite compressibility are studied in the one-dimensional context. Numerical studies on a hyperbolic model of contact with sinusoidal forcing have shown that the mean values of the scattered elastic displacements are discontinuous across the crack. The mean dilatation of the crack also increases with the amplitude of the forcing levels. The aim of the present theoretical study is to analyse these nonlinear processes under a larger range of nonlinear jump conditions. For this purpose, the problem is reduced to a nonlinear …
We study the essential spectra of formally self-adjoint elliptic systems on doubly periodic planar domains perturbed by a semi-infinite periodic row of foreign inclusions. We show that the essential spectrum of the problem consists of the essential spectrum of the purely periodic problem and another component, which is the union of the discrete spectra of model problems in the infinite perturbation strip; these model problems arise by an application of the partial Floquet-Bloch-Gelfand transform.
We analyze a family of singular Schrödinger operators describing a Neumann waveguide with a periodic array of singular traps of a $δ'$ type. We show that in the limit when perpendicular size of the guide tends to zero and the $δ'$ interactions are appropriately scaled, the first spectral gap is determined exclusively by geometric properties of the traps.
We study a Helmholtz-type spectral problem in a two-dimensional medium consisting of a fully periodic background structure and a perturbation in form of a line defect. The defect is aligned along one of the coordinate axes, periodic in that direction (with the same periodicity as the background), and bounded in the other direction. This setting models a so-called "soft-wall" waveguide problem. We show that there are no bound states, i.e., the spectrum of the operator under study contains no point spectrum.
We study the Neumann Laplacian $-Δ^N$ restricted to a periodic waveguide. In this situation its spectrum $σ(-Δ^N)$ presents a band structure. Our goal and strategy is to get spectral information from an analysis of the asymptotic behavior of these bands provided that the waveguide is sufficiently thin.
We define a weight function in a bi-material strip containing a semi-infinite crack and an imperfect interface and analyse a problem of anti-plane shear. We then present an asymptotic algorithm which uses the weight function to evaluate the coefficients in asymptotics of solutions to problems of wave propagation in a thin bi-material strip containing a periodic array of cracks situated at the interface between two materials.
Consider the Dirichlet Laplacian operator $-Δ^D$ in a periodic waveguide $Ω$. On the condition that $Ω$ is sufficiently thin, we show that its spectrum $σ(-Δ^D)$ is absolutely continuous (in each finite region). In addition, we ensure the existence of at least one gap in $σ(-Δ^D)$ and locate it.
We present a discrete model of resonant scattering of waves by an open periodic waveguide. The model elucidates a phenomenon common in electromagnetics, in which the interaction of plane waves with embedded guided modes of the waveguide causes sharp transmission anomalies and field amplification. The ambient space is modeled by a planar lattice and the waveguide by a linear periodic lattice coupled to the planar one along a line. We show the existence of standing and traveling guided modes and analyze a tangent bifurcation, in which resonance is initiated at a critical coupling strength where …
In this note we investigate spectral properties of a periodic waveguide $Ω^\varepsilon$ ($\varepsilon$ is a small parameter) obtained from a straight strip by attaching an array of $\varepsilon$-periodically distributed identical protuberances having "room-and-passage" geometry. In the current work we consider the operator $\mathcal{A}^\varepsilon=-ρ^\varepsilonΔ_{Ω^\varepsilon}$, where $Δ_{Ω^\varepsilon}$ is the Neumann Laplacian in $Ω^\varepsilon$, the weight $ρ^\varepsilon$ is equal to $1$ everywhere except the union of the "rooms". We will prove that the spectrum of $\mathcal{A}^\varepsilo…
At the example of two coupled waveguides we construct a periodic second order differential operator acting in a Euclidean domain and having spectral gaps whose edges are attained strictly inside the Brillouin zone. The waveguides are modeled by the Laplacian in two infinite strips of different width that have a common interior boundary. On this common boundary we impose the Neumann boundary condition but cut out a periodic system of small holes, while on the remaining exterior boundary we impose the Dirichlet boundary condition. It is shown that, by varying the widths of the strips and the dis…
We consider a family $\{Ω^\varepsilon\}_{\varepsilon>0}$ of periodic domains in $\mathbb{R}^2$ with waveguide geometry and analyse spectral properties of the Neumann Laplacian $-Δ_{Ω^\varepsilon}$ on $Ω^\varepsilon$. The waveguide $Ω^\varepsilon$ is a union of a thin straight strip of the width $\varepsilon$ and a family of small protuberances with the so-called "room-and-passage" geometry. The protuberances are attached periodically, with a period $\varepsilon$, along the strip upper boundary. For $\varepsilon\to 0$ we prove a (kind of) resolvent convergence of $-Δ_{Ω^\varepsilon}$ to a certa…
We consider small perturbations of the Laplace operator in a multi-dimensional cylindrical domain by second order differential operators with periodic coefficients. We show that under certain non-degeneracy conditions such perturbations can open a gap in the continuous spectrum and give the leading asymptotic terms for the gap edges. We also estimate the values of quasi-momentum at which the spectrum edges are attained. The general machinery is illustrated by several new examples in two- and three-dimensional structures.
We study a Helmholtz-type spectral problem related to the propagation of electromagnetic waves in photonic crystal waveguides. The waveguide is created by introducing a linear defect into a two-dimensional periodic medium. The defect is infinitely extended and aligned with one of the coordinate axes. The perturbation is expected to introduce guided mode spectrum inside the band gaps of the fully periodic, unperturbed spectral problem. In the first part of the paper, we prove that, somewhat unexpectedly, guided mode spectrum can be created by arbitrarily "small" perturbations. Secondly we show …
We consider a magnetic Schroedinger operator in a planar infinite strip with frequently and non-periodically alternating Dirichlet and Robin boundary conditions. Assuming that the homogenized boundary condition is the Dirichlet or the Robin one, we establish the uniform resolvent convergence in various operator norms and we prove the estimates for the rates of convergence. It is shown that these estimates can be improved by using special boundary correctors. In the case of periodic alternation, pure Laplacian, and the homogenized Robin boundary condition, we construct two-terms asymptotics for…
We consider the propagation of acoustic, electromagnetic and elastic waves in a one-dimensional periodic two-component material. Accurate asymptotic formulas are provided for the group velocity as a function of the material parameters when the concentration of scatterers is small or the characteristic impedances of the two media differ substantially. In the latter case, it is shown that the minimum group velocity occurs when the volume fractions of the components of the material are equal. In both asymptotic cases we show that the leading terms of the group velocity do not depend on frequency.…
Introducing an axis of reflectional symmetry in a quasicrystal leads to the creation of localised edge modes that can be used to build waveguides. We develop theory that characterises reflection-induced localised modes in materials that are formed by recursive tiling rules. This general theory treats a one-dimensional continuous differential model and describes a broad class of both quasicrystalline and periodic materials. We present an analysis of a material based on the Fibonacci sequence, which has previously been shown to have exotic, Cantor-like spectra with very wide spectral gaps. Our a…
We consider a one-dimensional classical many-body system with interaction potential of Lennard-Jones type in the thermodynamic limit at low temperature $1/β\in(0,\infty)$. The ground state is a periodic lattice. We show that when the density is strictly smaller than the density of the ground state lattice, the system with $N$ particles fills space by alternating approximately crystalline domains (clusters) with empty domains (voids) due to cracked bonds. The number of domains is of the order of $N\exp(- βe_\mathrm{surf}/2)$ with $e_\mathrm{surf}>0$ a surface energy. For the proof, the system i…
