The Chandra X-ray Observatory has now discovered nearly 10,000 X-ray point sources in the 2 x 0.8 degree region around the Galactic Center (Muno 2009). The sources are likely to be a population of accreting binaries in the Galactic Center, but little else is known of their nature. We obtained JHKs imaging of the 17'x 17' region around Sgr A*, an area containing 4339 of these X-ray sources, with the ISPI camera on the CTIO 4-m telescope. We cross-correlate the Chandra and ISPI catalogs to find potential IR counterparts to the X-ray sources. The extreme IR source crowding in the field means that it is not possible to establish the authenticity of the matches with astrometry and photometry alone. We find 2137 IR/X-ray astrometrically matched sources: statistically we estimate that our catalog contains 289 +/- 13 true matches to soft X-ray sources and 154 +/- 39 matches to hard X-ray sources. However, the fraction of true counterparts to candidate counterparts for hard sources is just 11 %, compared to 60 % for soft sources, making hard source NIR matches particularly challenging for spectroscopic follow-up. We calculate a color-magnitude diagram (CMD) for the matches to hard X-ray sources, and find regions where significant numbers of the IR matches are real. We use their CMD positions to place limits on the absolute Ks band magnitudes of the potential NIR counterparts to hard X-ray sources. We find regions of the counterpart CMD with 9 +/- 3 likely Wolf-Rayet/supergiant binaries (with 4 spectroscopically confirmed in the literature) as well as 44 +/- 13 candidates that could consist of either main sequence high mass X-ray binaries or red giants with an accreting compact companion. The X-ray source populations within galaxies are typically difficult to identify and classify from X-ray data alone. We are able to break through this barrier by combining deep new Chandra ACIS-I observations with extensive Hubble Space Telescope imaging from the PHAT survey of the M31 disk. We detect 373 X-ray sources down to 0.35-8.0 keV flux of 10$^{-15}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ over 0.4 square degrees, 170 of which are reported for the first time. We identify optical counterpart candidates for 188 of the 373 sources, after using the HST data to correct the absolute astrometry of our Chandra…
Near-Infrared Counterparts to Chandra X-ray Sources toward the Galactic Center. I. Statistics and a Catalog of Candidates
We study the source-subtracted near-infrared and X-ray background fluctuations of the COSMOS field using data from the Spitzer SPLASH program ($\sim$1272 hours) and Chandra COSMOS Legacy Survey (4.6 Ms). The new auto power spectra of the cosmic infrared and X-ray background fluctuations reach maximum angular scales of $\sim$ 3000$''$ and $\sim$ 5000$''$, respectively. We measure the cross power spectra between each infrared and X-ray band and calculate the mean power above 20$''$. We find that the soft X-ray band is correlated with 3.6 and 4.5$μ$m at $\sim$ 4 $σ$ significance level. The signif…
We analyze Chandra X-ray observatory data for a sample of 63 luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs), sampling the lower-infrared luminosity range of the Great Observatories All-Sky LIRG survey (GOALS), which includes the most luminous infrared selected galaxies in the local universe. X-rays are detected for 84 individual galaxies within the 63 systems, for which arcsecond resolution X-ray images, fluxes, infrared and X-ray luminosities, spectra and radial profiles are presented. Using X-ray and MIR selection criteria, we find AGN in (31$\pm$5)% of the galaxy sample, compared to the (38$\pm$6)% pre…
As part of the Chandra Galactic Bulge Survey (GBS), we present a catalogue of optical sources in the GBS footprint. This consists of two regions centered at Galactic latitude b = 1.5 degrees above and below the Galactic Centre, spanning (l x b) = (6x1) degrees. The catalogue consists of 2 or more epochs of observations for each line of sight in r', i' and Hα filters. It is complete down to r' = 20.2 and i' = 19.2 mag; the mean 5σ depth is r' = 22.5 and i' = 21.1 mag. The mean root-mean-square residuals of the astrometric solutions is 0.04 arcsec. We cross-correlate this optical catalogue with …
We report the results of a deep search for faint Chandra X-ray sources, radio sources, and optical counterparts in the nearby, core-collapsed globular cluster, NGC 6752. We combined new and archival Chandra imaging to detect 51 X-ray sources (12 of which are new) within the 1.9 arcmin half-light radius. Three radio sources in deep ATCA 5 and 9 GHz radio images match with Chandra sources. We have searched for optical identifications for the expanded Chandra source list using deep Hubble Space Telescope photometry in B, R, H-alpha, UV, and U. Among the entire sample of 51 Chandra sources, we ide…
Reliably identifying active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in dwarf galaxies is key to understanding black hole demographics at low masses and constraining models for black hole seed formation. Here we present Chandra X-ray Observatory observations of eleven dwarf galaxies that were chosen as AGN candidates using Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) mid-infrared (mid-IR) color-color selection. Hubble Space Telescope images are also presented for ten of the galaxies. Based on Sloan Digital Sky Survey spectroscopy, six galaxies in our sample have optical evidence for hosting AGNs and five are clas…
This paper forms part of the second major public data release of the Herschel Astrophysical Terahertz Large Area Survey (H-ATLAS). In this work, we describe the identification of optical and near-infrared counterparts to the submillimetre detected sources in the $177$ deg$^2$ North Galactic Plane (NGP) field. We used the likelihood ratio method to identify counterparts in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and in the UKIRT Imaging Deep Sky Survey within a search radius of $10$ arcsec of the H-ATLAS sources with a $4σ$ detection at $250 \, μ$m. We obtained reliable ($R \ge 0.8 $) optical counterparts…
We study the coherence of the near-infrared and X-ray background fluctuations and the X-ray spectral properties of the sources producing it. We use data from multiple Spitzer and Chandra surveys, including the UDS/SXDF surveys, the Hubble Deep Field North, the EGS/AEGIS field, the Chandra Deep Field South and the COSMOS surveys, comprising $\sim$2275 Spitzer/IRAC hours and $\sim$~16 Ms of Chandra data collected over a total area of $\sim$~1~deg$^2$. We report an overall $\sim$5$σ$ detection of a cross-power signal on large angular scales $>$ 20$''$ between the 3.6 and 4.5\mum\ and the X-ray ba…
We present the results from Chandra X-ray observations, and near- and mid-infrared analysis, using VISTA/VVV and Spitzer/GLIMPSE catalogs, of the high-mass star-forming region IRAS 16562-3959, which contains a candidate for a high mass protostar. We detected 249 X-ray sources within the ACIS-I field-of-view. The majority of the X-ray sources have low count rates (< 0.638 cts/ks), and hard X-ray spectra. The search for YSOs in the region using VISTA/VVV and Spitzer/GLIMPSE catalogs resulted in a total of 799 YSOs, with 66 Class I and 733 Class II YSOs. The search for near- and mid-infrared coun…
X-ray emission from quasars has been detected up to redshift $z=7.5$, although only limited to a few objects at $z>6.5$. In this work, we present new Chandra observations of five $z>6.5$ quasars. By combining with archival Chandra observations of six additional $z>6.5$ quasars, we perform a systematic analysis on the X-ray properties of these earliest accreting supermassive black holes (SMBHs). We measure the black hole masses, bolometric luminosities ($L_{\rm bol}$), Eddington ratios ($λ_{\rm Edd}$), emission line properties, and infrared luminosities ($L_{\rm IR}$) of these quasars using inf…
Hyper-luminous infrared galaxies (HyLIRGs) lie at the extreme luminosity end of the IR galaxy population with $L_{\rm IR}>10^{13}$L$_\odot$. They are thought to be closer counterparts of the more distant sub-mm galaxies, and should therefore be optimal targets to study the most massive systems in formation. We present deep $Chandra$ observations of IRAS~F15307+3252 (100ks), a classical HyLIRG located at $z=$0.93 and hosting a radio-loud AGN ($L_{\rm 1.4 GHz}\sim3.5\times10^{25}$ W/Hz). The $Chandra$ images reveal the presence of extended ($r=160$ kpc), asymmetric X-ray emission in the soft 0.3…
Improving the capabilities of detecting faint X-ray sources is fundamental to increase the statistics on faint high-z AGN and star-forming galaxies. We performed a simultaneous Maximum Likelihood PSF fit in the [0.5-2] keV and [2-7] keV energy bands of the 4 Ms{\em Chandra} Deep Field South (CDFS) data at the position of the 34930 CANDELS H-band selected galaxies. For each detected source we provide X-ray photometry and optical counterpart validation. We validated this technique by means of a raytracing simulation. We detected a total of 698 X-ray point-sources with a likelihood $\mathcal{L}$$…
