We present results on the evolution in the last 6 Gyr of the structural parameters of two samples of brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs). The nearby sample of BCGs consist on 69 galaxies from the WINGS survey spanning a redshift range of 0.04$<$z$<$0.07. The intermediate redshift (0.3$<$z$<$0.6) sample is formed by 20 BCGs extracted from the Hubble Space Telescope archive. Both samples have similar spatial resolution and their host clusters have similar X-ray luminosities. We report an increase in the size of the BCGs from intermediate to local redshift. However, we do not detect any variation in the Sérsic shape parameter in both samples. These results are proved to be robust since the observed tendencies are model independent. We also obtain significant correlations between some of the BCGs parameters and the main properties of the host clusters. More luminous, larger and centrally located BCGs are located in more massive and dominant galaxy clusters. These facts indicate that the host galaxy cluster has played an important role in the formation of their BCGs. We discuss the possible mechanisms that can explain the observed evolution of the structural parameters of the BCGs. We conclude that the main mechanisms that can explain the increase in size and the non-evolution in the Sérsic shape parameter of the BCGs in the last 6 Gyr are feedback processes. This result disagrees with semi-analytical simulation results supporting that merging processes are the main responsible for the evolution of the BCGs until the present epoch.
At the present time, SDSS early-type BCGs have larger Re than early-type galaxies of similar L, whether these other objects are in the field, or are satellites in clusters (Re ~ L for BCGs). At fixed M* and formation time, BCGs at lower z are larger and have smaller velocity dispersions, i.e. Re increases and sigma decreases with age. As a result, at z~0.25, corresponding to a lookback time of order 3 Gyrs, BCGs are smaller than their lower z counterparts by as much as 70% for the brightest BCGs: Re evolves as (1+z)^{0.85(Mr+21)}. Qualitatively similar but weaker evolution in the sizes is also…
We search for ongoing major dry-mergers in a well selected sample of local Brightest Cluster Galaxies (BCGs) from the C4 cluster catalogue. 18 out of 515 early-type BCGs with redshift between 0.03 and 0.12 are found to be in major dry-mergers, which are selected as pairs (or triples) with $r$-band magnitude difference $\dm<1.5$ and projected separation $\rp<30$ kpc, and showing signatures of interaction in the form of significant asymmetry in residual images. We find that the fraction of BCGs in major dry-mergers increases with the richness of the clusters, consistent with the fact that richer…
In this study we investigate the formation and evolution mechanisms of the brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) over cosmic time. At high redshift ($z\sim0.9$), we selected BCGs and most massive cluster galaxies (MMCGs) from the Cl1604 supercluster and compared them to low-redshift ($z\sim0.1$) counterparts drawn from the MCXC meta-catalog, supplemented by SDSS imaging and spectroscopy. We observed striking differences in the morphological, color, spectral, and stellar mass properties of the BCGs/MMCGs in the two samples. High-redshift BCGs/MMCGs were, in many cases, star-forming, late-type galax…
We present Integral Field Unit (IFU) spectroscopy of four brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) at z~0.1. Three of the BCGs have close companions within a projected radius of 20 kpc and one has no companion within that radius. We calculate the dynamical masses of the BCGs and their companions to be 1.4x10^11<M_dyn (M_solar)<1.5x10^12. We estimate the probability that the companions of the BCGs are bound using the observed masses and velocity offsets. We show that the lowest mass companion (1:4) is not bound while the two nearly equal mass (1:1.45 and 1:1.25) companions are likely to merge with the…
The orientations of brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) and their host clusters tend to be aligned, but the mechanism driving this is not clear. To probe the role of cluster mergers in this process, we quantify alignments of 38 BCGs in 22 clusters undergoing major mergers (up to $\sim 1$ Gyr after first pericenter). We find alignments entirely consistent with those of clusters in general. This suggests that alignments are robust against major cluster mergers. If, conversely, major cluster mergers actually help orient the BCG, such a process is acting quickly because the orientation is in place w…
We explore the redshift evolution of the dynamical properties of massive clusters and their brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) at $z < 2$ based on the IllustrisTNG-300 simulation. We select 270 massive clusters with $M_{200} < 10^{14}~{\rm M}_{\odot}$ at $z = 0$ and trace their progenitors based on merger trees. From 67 redshift snapshots covering $z < 2$, we compute the 3D subhalo velocity dispersion as a cluster velocity dispersion ($σ_{\rm cl}$). We also calculate the 3D stellar velocity dispersion of the BCGs ($σ_{\rm *,~BCG}$). Both $σ_{\rm cl}$ and $σ_{\rm *,~BCG}$ increase as universe ag…
We present an analysis of the 2-10 keV X-ray emission associated with the active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs). Our sample consists of 32 BCGs that lie in highly X-ray luminous cluster of galaxies (L_X-ray (0.1-2.4 keV) > 3*10^44 erg/s) in which AGN-jetted outflows are creating and sustaining clear Xray cavities. Our sample covers the redshift range 0 < z < 0.6 and reveals strong evolution in the nuclear X-ray luminosities, such that the black holes in these systems have become on average at least 10 times fainter over the last 5 Gyrs. Mindful of potential selecti…
Many brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) at the centers of X-ray selected clusters exhibit clear evidence for recent star formation. However, studies of BCGs in optically-selected clusters show that star formation is not enhanced when compared to control samples of non-BCGs of similar stellar mass. Here we analyze a sample of 113 BCGs in low redshift (z<0.1), optically-selected clusters, a matched control sample of non-BCGs, and a smaller sample of BCGs in X-ray selected clusters. We convolve the SDSS images of the BCGs to match the resolution of the GALEX data and we measure UV-optical colours …
Recent reports suggest that elliptical galaxies have increased their size dramatically over the last ~8 Gyr. This result points to a major re-think of the processes dominating the latetime evolution of galaxies. In this paper we present the first estimates for the scale sizes of brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) in the redshift range 0.8 < z < 1.3 from an analysis of deep Hubble Space Telescope imaging, comparing to a well matched local sample taken from the Local Cluster Substructure Survey at z ~ 0.2. For a small sample of 5 high redshift BCGs we measure half-light radii ranging from 14 - 53…
We present far-infrared (FIR) analysis of 68 Brightest Cluster Galaxies (BCGs) at 0.08 < z < 1.0. Deriving total infrared luminosities directly from Spitzer and Herschel photometry spanning the peak of the dust component (24-500um), we calculate the obscured star formation rate (SFR). 22(+6.2,-5.3)% of the BCGs are detected in the far-infrared, with SFR= 1-150 M_sun/yr. The infrared luminosity is highly correlated with cluster X-ray gas cooling times for cool-core clusters (gas cooling time <1 Gyr), strongly suggesting that the star formation in these BCGs is influenced by the cluster-scale co…
This paper is part of a series devoted to the study of the stellar populations in brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs), aimed at setting constraints on the formation and evolution of these objects. We have obtained high signal-to-noise ratio, long-slit spectra of 49 BCGs in the nearby Universe. Here, we derive Single Stellar Population (SSP)-equivalent ages, metallicities and alpha-abundance ratios in the centres of the galaxies using the Lick/IDS system of absorption line indices. We systematically compare the indices and derived parameters for the BCGs with those of large samples of ordinary el…
The numerous and massive young star clusters in blue compact galaxies (BCGs) are used to investigate the properties of their hosts. We test whether BCGs follow claimed relations between cluster populations and their hosts, such as the the fraction of the total luminosity contributed by the clusters as function of the mean star formation rate density; the $V$ band luminosity of the brightest youngest cluster as related to the mean host star formation rate; and the cluster formation efficiency (i.e., the fraction of star formation happening in star clusters) versus the density of the SFR. We fin…
Using the VIMOS Integral Field Unit (IFU) spectrograph on the Very Large Telescope (VLT), we have spatially mapped the kinematic properties of 10 nearby Brightest Cluster Galaxies (BCGs) and 4 BCG companion galaxies located within a redshift of $z=0.1$. In the hierarchical formation model, these massive galaxies $(10^{10.5} M_{\odot} < M_{dyn} < 10^{11.9} M_{\odot})$ are expected to undergo more mergers than lower mass galaxies, and simulations show that dry minor mergers can remove angular momentum. We test whether BCGs have low angular momenta by using the $λ_{Re}$ parameter developed by the…
The formation and evolution of local brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) is investigated by determining the stellar populations and dynamics from the galaxy core, though the outskirts and into the intracluster light (ICL). Integral spectroscopy of 23 BCGs observed out to 4 r_e is collected and high signal-to-noise regions are identified. Stellar population synthesis codes are used to determine the age, metallicity, velocity, and velocity dispersion of stars within each region. The intracluster light (ICL) spectra are best modeled with populations that are younger and less metal-rich than those o…
We constrain the ratio of black hole (BH) mass to total stellar mass of type-1 AGN in the COSMOS survey at 1<z<2. For 10 AGN at mean redshift z~1.4 with both HST/ACS and HST/NICMOS imaging data we are able to compute total stellar mass M_(*,total), based on restframe UV-to-optical host galaxy colors which constrain mass-to-light ratios. All objects have virial BH mass-estimates available from the COSMOS Magellan/IMACS and zCOSMOS surveys. We find zero difference between the M_BH--M_(*,total)-relation at z~1.4 and the M_BH--M_(*,bulge)-relation in the local Universe. Our interpretation is: (a) …
We used broad-band imaging data for 10 cool-core brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) and conducted a Bayesian analysis using stellar population synthesis to determine the likely properties of the constituent stellar populations. Determination of ongoing star formation rates (SFRs), in particular, has a direct impact on our understanding of the cooling of the intracluster medium (ICM), star formation and AGN-regulated feedback. Our model consists of an old stellar population and a series of young stellar components. We calculated marginalized posterior probability distributions for various model …
Recent observations provide evidence that some cool-core clusters (CCCs) host quasars in their brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs). Motivated by these findings we use 3D radiation-hydrodynamic simulations with the code Enzo to explore the joint role of the kinetic and radiative feedback from supermassive black holes (SMBHs) in BCGs. We implement kinetic feedback as sub-relativistic plasma outflows and model radiative feedback using the ray-tracing radiative transfer or thermal energy injection. In our simulations the central SMBH transitions between the radiatively efficient and radiatively inef…
In recent years the number of known galaxy clusters beyond z > 0.2 has increased drastically, with the release of multiple catalogs containing >30,000 optically-detected galaxy clusters over the range 0 < z < 0.6. Combining these catalogs with the availability of optical spectroscopy of the brightest cluster galaxy from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey allows for the evolution of optical emission-line nebulae in cluster cores to be quantified. For the first time, the continuous evolution of optical line emission in brightest cluster galaxies over the range 0 < z < 0.6 is determined. A minimum in t…
The CLASH X-ray selected sample of 20 galaxy clusters contains ten brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) that exhibit significant ($>$5 $σ$) extinction-corrected star formation rates (SFRs). Star formation activity is inferred from photometric estimates of UV and H$α$+[\ion{N}{2}] emission in knots and filaments detected in CLASH HST ACS and WFC3 observations. UV-derived SFRs in these BCGs span two orders of magnitude, including two with a SFR $\gtrsim$ 100 M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$. These measurements are supplemented with [\ion{O}{2}], [\ion{O}{3}], and H$β$ fluxes measured from spectra obtained wit…
We use the largest complete sample of 64 galaxy clusters (HIghest X-ray FLUx Galaxy Cluster Sample) with available high-quality X-ray data from Chandra, and apply 16 cool-core diagnostics to them, some of them new. We also correlate optical properties of brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) with X-ray properties. To segregate cool core and non-cool-core clusters, we find that central cooling time, t_cool, is the best parameter for low redshift clusters with high quality data, and that cuspiness is the best parameter for high redshift clusters. 72% of clusters in our sample have a cool core (t_coo…
Today, the brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) are passive and very massive galaxies at the center of their clusters, and they still accrete mass through swallowing companions and gas from cooling flows. However their formation history is not well known. We report CO(4$\rightarrow$3) and continuum map observations of the SpARCS1049+56 BCG at $z=1.709$, one of the most distant known BCGs. Our observations yield $M_{{\rm H}_2}<1.1\times10^{10}M_\odot$ for the BCG; while in CO(4$\rightarrow$3), we detect two gas-rich companions at the northeast and southeast of the BCG, within 20 kpc, with ${L^\pri…
Recent independent results from numerical simulations and observations have shown that brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) have increased their stellar mass by a factor of almost two between z~0.9 and z~0.2. The numerical simulations further suggest that more than half this mass is accreted through major mergers. Using a sample of 18 distant galaxy clusters with over 600 spectroscopically confirmed cluster members between them, we search for observational evidence that major mergers do play a significant role. We find a major merger rate of 0.38 +/- 0.14 mergers per Gyr at z~1. While the uncerta…
We present deep J and Ks band photometry of 20 high redshift galaxy clusters between z=0.8-1.5, 19 of which are observed with the MOIRCS instrument on the Subaru Telescope. By using near-infrared light as a proxy for stellar mass we find the surprising result that the average stellar mass of Brightest Cluster Galaxies (BCGs) has remained constant at ~9e11MSol since z~1.5. We investigate the effect on this result of differing star formation histories generated by three well known and independent stellar population codes and find it to be robust for reasonable, physically motivated choices of ag…
The galaxy cluster Abell 3733 (A3733) is a very suitable candidate in addressing dynamical processes throughout galaxy cluster mergers. This study shows structural analysis results of A3733 (z = 0.038) based on X-ray and optical data. According to X-ray luminosity map, A3733 hosts two sub-structures separated in the sky by $\sim$ 0.25 Mpc, and the two distinct clumps are located in the East (A3733E) and the West (A3733W) directions. Both sub-structures are centred on two different brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs), and the X-ray and optical centroids of both BCGs substantially coincide with ea…
We study the relation between molecular gas and star formation in a volume-limited sample of 222 galaxies from the COLD GASS survey, with measurements of the CO(1-0) line from the IRAM 30m telescope. The galaxies are at redshifts 0.025<z<0.05 and have stellar masses in the range 10.0<log(M*/Msun)<11.5. The IRAM measurements are complemented by deep Arecibo HI observations and homogeneous SDSS and GALEX photometry. A reference sample that includes both UV and far-IR data is used to calibrate our estimates of star formation rates from the seven optical/UV bands. The mean molecular gas depletion …
With the aim of tracing back the evolution of galaxies in nearby groups we use smooth particle hydrodynamical (SPH) simulations with chemo-photometric implementation. Here we focus on the evolution of the early-type members (Es and S0s, ETGs hereafter) in two groups, USGC U376 and LGG 225, both in the Leo cloud. We use the near-UV (NUV)-optical rest-frame $NUV-r$ versus $M_r$ color magnitude diagram to follow their evolution, from the blue cloud (BC) to the red sequence (RS), through the green valley (GV). ETGs brighter than $M_r=-21$ mag are older than 13 Gyr and spend up to 10 Gyr of their o…
Knowledge of the supernova (SN) delay time distribution (DTD) - the SN rate versus time that would follow a hypothetical brief burst of star formation - can shed light on SN progenitors and physics. We compile recent measurements of the Type-Ia SN (SN Ia) rate in galaxy clusters at redshifts z=0-1.45. Together with the observed iron-to-stellar mass ratio in clusters, which constrains the time-integrated number of SN Ia events in clusters, we recover the DTD of SNe Ia in cluster environments. The DTD peaks at the shortest time-delay interval we probe, 0<t<2.2 Gyr, with a low tail out to delays …
This paper discusses the evolution of the correlation between galaxy star formation rates (SFRs) and stellar mass (M*) over the last ~10 Gyrs, particularly focusing on its environmental dependence. We first present the mid-infrared (MIR) properties of the H-alpha-selected galaxies in a rich cluster Cl0939+4713 at z=0.4. With a MIR stacking analysis, we find that the median SFR of H-alpha emitters is higher in higher-density environment at z=0.4. We also find that star-forming galaxies in high-density environment tend to have higher specific SFR (SSFR), although the trend is much less significa…
We present a combined X-ray and optical analysis of three bimodal galaxy clusters selected as merging candidates at z ~ 0.1. These targets are part of MUSIC (MUlti--Wavelength Sample of Interacting Clusters), which is a general project designed to study the physics of merging clusters by means of multi-wavelength observations. Observations include spectro-imaging with XMM-Newton EPIC camera, multi-object spectroscopy (260 new redshifts), and wide-field imaging at the ESO 3.6m and 2.2m telescopes. We build a global picture of these clusters using X-ray luminosity and temperature maps together w…
Here we examine the Milky Way's GC system to estimate the fraction of accreted versus in situ formed GCs. We first assemble a high quality database of ages and metallicities for 93 Milky Way GCs from literature deep colour-magnitude data. The age-metallicity relation for the Milky Way's GCs reveals two distinct tracks -- one with near constant old age of ~12.8 Gyr and the other branches to younger ages. We find that the latter young track is dominated by globular clusters associated with the Sagittarius and Canis Major dwarf galaxies. Despite being overly simplistic, its age-metallicity relati…

(Abridged) Interacting galaxies are well-known for their high star formation rates and rich star cluster populations, but the rapidly changing tidal field can also efficiently destroy clusters. We use numerical simulations of merging disc galaxies to investigate which mechanism dominates. The simulations include a model for the formation and dynamical disruption of the entire star cluster population. We find that the dynamical heating of clusters by tidal shocks is about an order of magnitude higher in interacting galaxies than in isolated galaxies. This is driven by the increased gas density,…
Using a method to discover and classify supernovae (SNe) in galaxy spectra, we find 90 Type Ia SNe (SNe Ia) and 10 Type II SNe among the ~700,000 galaxy spectra in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7 that have VESPA-derived star-formation histories (SFHs). We use the SN Ia sample to measure SN Ia rates per unit stellar mass. We confirm, at the median redshift of the sample, z = 0.1, the inverse dependence on galaxy mass of the SN Ia rate per unit mass, previously reported by Li et al. (2011b) for a local sample. We further confirm, following Kistler et al. (2011), that this relation ca…
A quantum expansion parameter, analogous to the Hubble parameter in cosmology, is defined for a free particle quantum wavefunction. By considering the universe as an initial single Gaussian quantum wavepacket whose mass is that of present-day observable universe and whose size is that of the Planck Length at the Planck Time, it is demonstrated that this quantum expansion parameter has a value at the present epoch of the same order as the value of the Hubble constant. The coincidence suggests examining the effect of including this type of quantum wave expansion in traditional general relativist…
