We present results from the first two quarters of a survey to search for pulsations in compact stellar objects with the Kepler spacecraft. The survey sample and the various methods applied in its compilation are described, and spectroscopic observations are presented to separate the objects into accurate classes. From the Kepler photometry we clearly identify nine compact pulsators, and a number of interesting binary stars. Of the pulsators, one shows the strong, rapid pulsations typical for a V361 Hya type sdB variable (sdBV), seven show long-period pulsations characteristic of V1093 Her type sdBVs, and one shows low-amplitude pulsations with both short and long periods. We derive effective temperatures and surface gravities for all the subdwarf B stars in the sample and demonstrate that below the boundary region where hybrid sdB pulsators are found, all our targets are pulsating. For the stars hotter than this boundary temperature a low fraction of strong pulsators (<10 per cent) is confirmed. Interestingly, the short-period pulsator also shows a low-amplitude mode in the long-period region, and several of the V1093 Her pulsators show low amplitude modes in the short-period region, indicating that hybrid behaviour may be common in these stars, also outside the boundary temperature region where hybrid pulsators have hitherto been found.
In this article we present the preliminary results of an observational search for subdwarf B and white dwarf pulsators in the Kepler field of view, performed using the DOLORES camera attached to the 3.6m Telescopio Nazionale Galileo (TNG).
The V777 Her pulsator KIC 8626021 has been observed continuously by the Kepler space telescope for nine months. Two new independent pulsation modes are detected in the extended dataset, which both match the predicted sequence of \ell = 2 modes. We demonstrate the photometric stability of the main pulsation modes and discuss the prospect of measuring period changes within the context of the extended Kepler mission.
We study the fraction of stars in and around the δ Scuti instability strip that are pulsating, using {\em Gaia} DR2 parallaxes to derive precise luminosities. We classify a sample of over 15,000 {\em Kepler} A and F stars into δ Sct and non-δ Sct stars, paying close attention to variability that could have other origins. We find that 18 per cent of the δ Sct stars have their dominant frequency above the Kepler long-cadence Nyquist frequency (periods < 1 hr), and 30 per cent have some super-Nyquist variability. We analyse the pulsator fraction as a function of effective temperature and luminosi…
We present the discovery of nonradial pulsations in five hot subdwarf B (sdB) stars based on 27 days of nearly continuous time-series photometry using the Kepler spacecraft. We find that every sdB star cooler than $\approx 27\,500\,$K that Kepler has observed (seven so far) is a long-period pulsator of the V1093~Her (PG~1716) class or a hybrid star with both short and long periods. The apparently non-binary long-period and hybrid pulsators are described here. The V1093~Her periods range from one to 4.5~h and are associated with $g-$mode pulsations. Three stars also exhibit short periods indica…
Eclipsing binaries (EBs) are unique targets for measuring precise stellar properties and constrain stellar evolution models. In particular, it is possible to measure at the percent level masses and radii of both components of a double-lined spectroscopic EB. Since the advent of high-precision photometric space missions (MOST, CoRoT, Kepler, BRITE, TESS), the use of stellar pulsation properties to infer stellar interiors and dynamics constitutes a revolution for low-mass star studies. The Kepler mission has led to the discovery of thousands of classical pulsators such as $δ$ Scuti and solar-lik…
We present five new pulsating subdwarf B (sdB) stars discovered by the Kepler spacecraft during the asteroseismology survey phase. We perform time-series analysis on the nearly continuous month-long Kepler datasets of these 5 objects; these datasets provide nearly alias-free time-series photometry at unprecedented precision. Following an iterative prewhitening process we derive the pulsational frequency spectra of these stars, separating out artefacts of known instrumental origin. We find that these new pulsating sdB stars are multiperiodic long-period pulsators of the V1093 Her type, with the…
We present results from the final six months of a survey to search for pulsations in white dwarfs and hot subdwarf stars with the Kepler spacecraft. Spectroscopic observations are used to separate the objects into accurate classes, and we explore the physical parameters of the subdwarf B (sdB) stars and white dwarfs in the sample. From the Kepler photometry and our spectroscopic data, we find that the sample contains 5 new pulsators of the V1093 Her type, one AM CVn type cataclysmic variable, and a number of other binary systems. This completes the survey for compact pulsators with Kepler. No …
We present the second results of an ensemble and systematic survey of oscillation mode variability in compact pulsators observed with the original {\sl Kepler} mission. Two types of flux calibrations, raw and corrected, collected on two hot B subdwarf stars, KIC\,2438324 and KIC\,11179657, are thoroughly examined with the goal to evaluate the difference of patterns when oscillation modes modulate in amplitude (AM) and frequency (FM). We concentrate on AMs and FMs occurring in seven multiplet components in each star as representative frequencies. The analysis shows that FM measurements are inde…
The short-period (P $\approx1.7$ d), Algol-type eclipsing binary KIC 7385478 consists of an F-type primary star ($M_1 \approx 1.71M_{\odot}$) and an evolved K-type secondary ($M_2 \approx 0.37M_{\odot}$) (Ozdarcan \& Ali Dal 2017). We study the variability of the {\it Kepler} light curve and attribute many frequency peaks in the Fourier spectrum to the spot modulation. These frequencies are in the form of orbital harmonics and are highly variable in amplitude. They are most likely from the mass-accreting primary star. In addition, we identify a series prograde dipole g-modes from the primary s…
We present the first binary modelling results for the pulsating eclipsing binary KIC 11285625, discovered by the Kepler mission. An automated method to disentangle the pulsation spectrum and the orbital variability in high quality light curves, was developed and applied. The goal was to obtain accurate orbital and component properties, in combination with essential information derived from spectroscopy. A binary model for KIC 11285625 was obtained, using a combined analysis of high-quality space-based Kepler light curves and ground-based high-resolution HERMES echelle spectra. The binary model…
The simultaneous presence of variability due to both pulsations and binarity is no rare phenomenon. Unfortunately, the complexities of dealing with even one of these sources of variability individually means that the other signal is often treated as a nuisance and discarded. However, both types of variability offer means to probe fundamental stellar properties in robust ways through asteroseismic and binary modelling. We present an efficient methodology that includes both binary and asteroseismic information to estimate fundamental stellar properties based on a grid-based modelling approach. W…
Context: Several hundred candidate hybrid pulsators of type A-F have been identified from space-based observations. Their large number allows both statistical analyses and detailed investigations of individual stars. This offers the opportunity to study the full interior of the genuine hybrids, in which both low-radial-order p- and high-order g-modes are self-excited at the same time. However, a few other physical processes can also be responsible for the observed hybrid nature, related to binarity or to surface inhomogeneities. The finding that most delta Scuti stars also show long-period lig…
We present the discovery of nonradial pulsations in a hot subdwarf B star based on 30.5 days of nearly continuous time-series photometry using the \emph{Kepler} spacecraft. KIC 010139564 is found to be a short-period pulsator of the V361 Hya (EC 14026) class with more than 10 independent pulsation modes whose periods range from 130 to 190 seconds. It also shows one periodicity at a period of 3165 seconds. If this periodicity is a high order g-mode, then this star may be the hottest member of the hybrid DW Lyn stars. In addition to the resolved pulsation frequencies, additional periodic variati…
In $γ$ Doradus stars, the g-mode period spacing shows an approximately linear relation with period. The slope is a new asteroseismic diagnostic, related to the rotation rate and the azimuthal order $m$. We report two automated methods, the `moving-window Fourier transform' and the `cross-correlation', to detect and measure the period spacings based on four-year light curves from the \textit{Kepler} satellite. The results show that the cross-correlation method performs better at detecting the period spacings and their slopes. In this paper, we apply our method to 22 $γ$ Dor stars with g-mode mu…
The survey phase of the Kepler Mission includes a number of hot subdwarf B (sdB) stars to search for nonradial pulsations. We present our analysis of two sdB stars that are found to be g-mode pulsators of the V1093 Her class. These two stars also display the distinct irradiation effect typical of sdB stars with a close M-dwarf companion with orbital periods of less than half a day. Because the orbital period is so short, the stars should be in synchronous rotation, and if so, the rotation period should imprint itself on the multiplet structure of the pulsations. However, we do not find clear e…
We determine the fundamental parameters of SPB and Beta Cep candidate stars observed by the Kepler satellite mission and estimate the expected types of non-radial pulsators by comparing newly obtained high-resolution spectra with synthetic spectra computed on a grid of stellar parameters assuming LTE and check for NLTE effects for the hottest stars. For comparison, we determine Teff independently from fitting the spectral energy distribution of the stars obtained from the available photometry. We determine Teff, log(g), micro-turbulent velocity, vsin(i), metallicity, and elemental abundance fo…
The presence of A/F-type {\it Kepler} hybrid stars extending across the entire $δ$ Sct-$γ$ Dor instability strips and beyond remains largely unexplained. In order to better understand these particular stars, we performed a multi-epoch spectroscopic study of 49 candidate A/F-type hybrid stars and one cool(er) hybrid object detected by the {\it Kepler} mission. We determined a lower limit of 27 % for the multiplicity fraction. For six spectroscopic systems, we also reported long-term variations of the time delays. For four systems, the time delay variations are fully coherent with those of the r…
KIC10001893 is one out of 19 subdwarf-B (sdB) pulsators observed by the Kepler spacecraft in its primary mission. In addition to tens of pulsation frequencies in the g-mode domain, its Fourier spectrum shows three weak peaks at very low frequencies, which is too low to be explained in terms of g modes. The most convincing explanation is that we are seeing the orbital modulation of three Earth-size planets (or planetary remnants) in very tight orbits, which are illuminated by the strong stellar radiation. The orbital periods are P1=5.273, P2=7.807, and P3=19.48 hours, and the period ratios P2/P…
We report the discovery of a post-mass transfer Gamma Doradus/Delta Scuti hybrid pulsator in the eclipsing binary KIC~9592855. This binary has a circular orbit, an orbital period of 1.2 days, and contains two stars of almost identical masses ($M_1=1.72M_{\odot}, M_2=1.71M_{\odot}$). However, the cooler secondary star is more evolved ($R_2=1.96R_{\odot}$) while the hotter primary is still on the zero-age-main-sequence ($R_1=1.53R_{\odot}$). Coeval models from single star evolution cannot explain the observed masses and radii, and binary evolution with mass-transfer needs to be invoked. After su…
Rossby modes are the oscillations in a rotating fluid, whose restoring force is the Coriolis force. They provide an additional diagnostic to understand the rotation of stars, which complicates asteroseismic modelling. We report 82 $γ$\,Doradus stars for which clear period spacing patterns of both gravity and Rossby modes have been detected. The period spacings of both show a quasi-linear relation with the pulsation period but the slope is negative for the gravity modes and positive for the Rossby modes. Most Rossby modes have $k=-2, m=-1$. For only one star a series of $k=-1,m=-1$ modes is see…
We investigate the possibility of nearly-equally spaced periods in 13 hot subdwarf B (sdB) stars observed with the Kepler spacecraft and one observed with CoRoT. Asymptotic limits for gravity (g-)mode pulsations provide relationships between equal period spacings of modes with differing degrees and relationships between periods of the same radial order but differing degrees. Period transforms, Kolmogorov-Smirnov tests, and linear least-squares fits have been used to detect and determine the significance of equal period spacings. We have also used Monte Carlo simulations to estimate the likelih…
Context: OB stars are important in the chemistry and evolution of the Universe, but the sample of targets well understood from an asteroseismological point of view is still too limited to provide feedback on the current evolutionary models. Our study extends this sample with two spectroscopic binary systems. AIMS. Our goal is to provide orbital solutions, fundamental parameters and abundances from disentangled high-resolution high signal-to-noise spectra, as well as to analyse and interpret the variations in the Kepler light curve of these carefully selected targets. This way we continue our e…
Observations of the pulsations of stars can be used to infer their interior structure and test theoretical models. The main sequence $γ$ Doradus (Dor) and $δ$ Scuti (Sct) stars with masses 1.2-2.5 $M_{\sun}$ are particularly useful for these studies. The $γ$ Dor stars pulsate in high-order $g$ modes with periods of order 1 day, driven by convective blocking at the base of their envelope convection zone. The $δ$ Sct stars pulsate in low-order $g$ and $p$ modes with periods of order 2 hours, driven by the $κ$ mechanism operating in the Heii ionization zone. Theory predicts an overlap region in t…
We present the results of time-series photometric analysis of 15106 A-K type stars observed by the Kepler space mission. We identified 513 new rotational variables and measured their starspot rotation periods as a function of spectral type and discuss the distribution of their amplitudes. We examined the well-established period-colour relationship that applies to stars of spectral types F5-K for all of these rotational variables and, interestingly, found that a similar period-colour relationship appears to extend to stars of spectral types A7 to early-F too. This result is not consistent with …
The analysis of eclipsing binaries containing non-radial pulsators allows: i) to combine two different and independent sources of information on the internal structure and evolutionary status of the components, and ii) to study the effects of tidal forces on pulsations. KIC 3858884 is a bright Kepler target whose light curve shows deep eclipses, complex pulsation patterns with pulsation frequencies typical of δ Sct, and a highly eccentric orbit. We present the result of the analysis of Kepler photometry and of high resolution phaseresolved spectroscopy. Spectroscopy yielded both the radial vel…
We report the discovery of pulsations in the spectroscopic PG 1159 type pre-white dwarf SDSS J075415.12+085232.18. Analysis of the spectrum by Werner, Rauch and Kepler (2014) indicated Teff=120 000+/-10 000 K, log g=7.0+/-0.3, mass M=0.52+/-0.02 Msun, C/He=0.33 by number. We obtained time-series images with the SOAR 4.1 m telescope and 2.1 m Otto Struve telescope at McDonald Observatory and show the star is also a variable PG 1159 type star, with dominant period of 525 s.
The NASA's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) is about to provide full-frame images of almost the entire sky. The amount of stellar data to be analysed represents hundreds of millions stars, which is several orders of magnitude above the amount of stars observed by CoRoT, Kepler, or K2 missions. We aim at automatically classifying the newly observed stars, with near real-time algorithms, to better guide their subsequent detailed studies. In this paper, we present a classification algorithm built to recognise solar-like pulsators among classical pulsators, which relies on the global a…
We present the analysis of four M dwarf stars -plus one M giant that seeped past our selection criteria- observed in Cycle 3 of Kepler Guest Observer program (GO3) in a search for intrinsic pulsations. Stellar oscillations in M dwarfs were theoretically predicted by Rodríguez-López et al. (2012) to be in the range ~20-40 min and ~4-8 h, depending on the age and the excitation mechanism. We requested Kepler short cadence observations to have an adequate sampling of the oscillations. The targets were chosen on the basis of detectable rotation in the initial Kepler results, biasing towards youth.…
We analyse the fifth roAp star reported in the Kepler field, KIC 7582608, discovered with the SuperWASP project. The object shows a high frequency pulsation at 181.7324 d$^{-1}$ (P=7.9 min) with an amplitude of 1.45 mmag, and low frequency rotational modulation corresponding to a period of 20.4339 d with an amplitude of 7.64 mmag. Spectral analysis confirms the Ap nature of the target, with characteristic lines of Eu II, Nd III and Pr III present. The spectra are not greatly affected by broadening, which is consistent with the long rotational period found from photometry. From our spectral obs…
The light curves of 252 B-star candidates in the Kepler data base are analyzed in a similar fashion to that done by Balona et al. (2011) to further characterize B star variability, increase the sample of variable B stars for future study, and to identify stars whose power spectra include particularly interesting features such as frequency groupings. Stars are classified as either constant light emitters, $β$ Cep stars, slowly pulsating B stars, hybrid pulsators, binaries or stars whose light curves are dominated by rotation (Bin/Rot), hot subdwarfs, or white dwarfs. One-hundred stars in our sa…
The high precision data obtained by the {\it Kepler} satellite allows us to detect hybrid type pulsator candidates more accurately than the data obtained by ground-based observations. In this study, we present preliminary results on the new analysis of the {\it Kepler} light curve and high resolution spectroscopic observations of pulsating Am star KIC\,9204718. Our tentative analysis therefore show that the star has hybrid pulsational characteristics.
We present an analysis of the first Kepler K2 mission observations of a rapidly oscillating Ap (roAp) star, HD 24355 ($V=9.65$). The star was discovered in SuperWASP broadband photometry with a frequency of 224.31 d$^{-1}$, (2596.18 $μ$Hz; $P = 6.4$ min) and an amplitude of 1.51 mmag, with later spectroscopic analysis of low-resolution spectra showing HD 24355 to be an A5 Vp SrEu star. The high precision K2 data allow us to identify 13 rotationally split sidelobes to the main pulsation frequency of HD 24355. This number of sidelobes combined with an unusual rotational phase variation show this…
KIC~8262223 is an eclipsing binary with a short orbital period ($P=1.61$ d). The {\it Kepler} light curves are of Algol-type and display deep and partial eclipses, ellipsoidal variations, and pulsations of Delta Scuti type. We analyzed the {\it Kepler} photometric data, complemented by phase-resolved spectra from the R-C Spectrograph on the 4-meter Mayall telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory and determined the fundamental parameters of this system. The low mass and oversized secondary ($M_2=0.20M_{\odot}$, $R_2=1.31R_{\odot}$) is the remnant of the donor star that transferred most of it…
Gamma Doradus and delta Scuti pulsators cover the transition region between low mass and massive main-sequence stars, and as such, are critical for testing stellar models. When they reside in binary systems, we can combine two independent methods to derive critical information, such as precise fundamental parameters to aid asteroseismic modelling. In the Kepler light curve of KIC10080943, clear signatures of gravity- and pressure-mode pulsations have been found. Ground-based spectroscopy revealed this target to be a double-lined binary system. We present the analysis of four years of Kepler ph…
Hundreds of candidate hybrid pulsators of intermediate type A-F were revealed by the recent space missions. Hybrid pulsators allow to study the full stellar interiors, where p- and g-modes are simultaneously excited. The true hybrid stars must be identified since other processes, due to stellar multiplicity or rotation, might explain the presence of (some) low frequencies observed in their periodograms. We measured the radial velocities of 50 candidate Delta Sct - Gamma Dor hybrid stars from the Kepler mission with the Hermes/Ace spectrographs over a span of months to years. We aim to derive t…
The results of our six year systematic observational survey on candidate eclipsing binaries with a delta Sct component are briefly presented. A new catalogue for this kind of systems as well as the properties of their delta Sct members are also presented. The comparison between the components-pulsators and the single delta Sct stars shows that both the evolution and the pulsating properties differ significantly. Finally, we introduce the new era of studying stellar pulsations using high accuracy data from Kepler mission and emphasizing the great opportunities that are now opened for a deep kno…
We present the results of our analysis of KIC 4150611 (HD 181469) - an interesting, bright quintuple system that includes a hybrid $δ$ Sct/$γ$ Dor pulsator. Four periods of eclipses - 94.2, 8.65, 1.52 and 1.43 d - have been observed by the Kepler satellite, and three point sources (A, B, and C) are seen in high angular resolution images. From spectroscopic observations made with the HIDES spectrograph attached to the 1.88-m telescope of the Okayama Astrophysical Observatory (OAO), for the first time we calculated radial velocities (RVs) of the component B - a pair of G-type stars - and combine…
The candidate SX Phe star KIC 11754974 shows a remarkably high number of combination frequencies in the Fourier amplitude spectrum: 123 of the 166 frequencies in our multi-frequency fit are linear combinations of independent modes. Predictable patterns in frequency spacings are seen in the Fourier transform of the light curve. We present an analysis of 180 d of short-cadence Kepler photometry and of new spectroscopic data for this evolved, late A-type star. We infer from the 1150-d, long-cadence light curve, and in two different ways, that our target is the primary of a 343-d, non-eclipsing bi…
Extensive observations from the Kepler spacecraft have recently revealed a new outburst phenomenon operating in cool pulsating DA (hydrogen atmosphere) white dwarfs (DAVs). With the introduction of two new outbursting DAVs from K2 Fields 7 (EPIC 229228364) and 8 (EPIC 220453225) in these proceedings, we presently know of six total members of this class of object. We present the observational commonalities of the outbursting DAVs: (1) outbursts that increase the mean stellar flux by up to 15%, last many hours, and recur irregularly on timescales of days; (2) effective temperatures that locate t…
Spectroscopic iron-to-hydrogen ratios, radial velocities, atmospheric parameters, and new photometric analyses are presented for 41 RR Lyrae stars (and one probable high-amplitude delta Scuti star) located in the field-of-view of the Kepler space telescope. Thirty-seven of the RR Lyrae stars are fundamental-mode pulsators (i.e., RRab stars) of which 16 exhibit the Blazhko effect. Four of the stars are multiperiodic RRc pulsators oscillating primarily in the first-overtone mode. Spectroscopic [Fe/H] values for the 34 stars for which we were able to derive estimates range from -2.54 +/- 0.13 (NR…
We introduce the first g-mode pulsator found to reside on the classical blue horizontal branch. One year of Kepler observations of KIC 1718290 reveals a rich spectrum of low-amplitude modes with periods between one and twelve hours, most of which follow a regular spacing of 276.3 s. This mode structure strongly resembles that of the V1093Her pulsators, with only a slight shift towards longer periods. Our spectroscopy, however, reveals KIC 1718290 to be quite distinct from the sdB stars that show V1093Her pulsations, which all have surface gravities higher than log g = 5.1 and helium abundances…
We identify stars in the $δ$ Sct instability strip that do not pulsate in p modes at the 50-$μ$mag limit, using Kepler data. Spectral classification and abundance analyses from high-resolution spectroscopy allow us to identify chemically peculiar stars, in which the absence of pulsations is not surprising. The remaining stars are chemically normal, yet they are not $δ$ Sct stars. Their lack of observed p modes cannot be explained through any known mechanism. However, they are mostly distributed around the edges of the $δ$ Sct instability strip, which allows for the possibility that they actual…
The CoRoT and Kepler data revolutionised our view on stellar pulsation. For massive stars, the space data revealed the simultaneous presence of low-amplitude low-order modes and dominant high-order gravity modes in several B-type pulsators. The interpretation of such a rich set of detected oscillations requires new tools. We present computations of oscillations for B-type pulsators taking into account the effects of the Coriolis force in the so-called traditional approximation. We discuss the limitations of classical frequency matching to tune these stars seismically and show that the predicti…
For a solar-like star, the surface rotation evolves with time, allowing in principle to estimate the age of a star from its surface rotation period. Here we are interested in measuring surface rotation periods of solar-like stars observed by the NASA Kepler mission. Different methods have been developed to track rotation signals in Kepler photometric light curves: time-frequency analysis based on wavelet techniques, autocorrelation and composite spectrum. We use the learning abilities of random forest classifiers to take decisions during two crucial steps of the analysis. First, given some inp…
We use four years of Kepler photometry to study the non-eclipsing spectroscopic binary KIC 10080943. We find both components to be $γ$ Doradus/$δ$ Scuti hybrids, which pulsate in both p and g modes. We present an analysis of the g modes, which is complicated by the fact that the two sets of $\ell=1$ modes partially overlap in the frequency spectrum. Nevertheless, it is possible to disentangle them by identifying rotationally split doublets from one component and triplets from the other. The identification is helped by the presence of additive combination frequencies in the spectrum that involv…
The space-missions MOST, CoRoT, and Kepler deliver a huge amount of high-quality photometric data suitable to study numerous pulsating stars. Our ultimate goal is a detection and analysis of an extended sample of Gamma Dor-type pulsating stars with the aim to search for observational evidence of non-uniform period spacings and rotational splittings of gravity modes in main-sequence stars typically twice as massive as the Sun. We applied an automated supervised photometric classification method to select a sample of 69 Gamma Doradus candidate stars. We used an advanced method to extract the Kep…
Asteroseismic modelling of the internal structure of main-sequence stars born with a convective core has so far been based on homogeneous analyses of space photometric Kepler light curves of 4 years duration, to which most often incomplete inhomogeneously deduced spectroscopic information was added to break degeneracies. We composed a sample of 111 dwarf gravity-mode pulsators observed by the Kepler space telescope whose light curves allowed for determination of their near-core rotation rates. For this sample we assembled HERMES high-resolution optical spectroscopy at the 1.2-m Mercator telesc…
Measuring phase modulation in pulsating stars has proved to be a highly successful way of finding binary systems. The class of pulsating main-sequence A and F variables known as delta Scuti stars are particularly good targets for this, and the \textit{Kepler} sample of these has been almost fully exploited. However, some \textit{Kepler} $δ$ Scuti stars have incorrect temperatures in stellar properties catalogues, and were missed in previous analyses. We used an automated pulsation classification algorithm to find 93 new $δ$ Scuti pulsators among tens of thousands of F-type stars, which we then…
In this review we focus on non-linear phenomena in pulsating stars the mode selection and amplitude limitation. Of many linearly excited modes only a fraction is detected in pulsating stars. Which of them and why (the problem of mode selection) and to what amplitude (the problem of amplitude limitation) are intrinsically non-linear and still unsolved problems. Tools for studying these problems are briefly discussed and our understanding of mode selection and amplitude limitation in selected groups of self-excited pulsators is presented. Focus is put on classical pulsators (Cepheids and RR Lyra…
We perform a search for rapidly oscillating Ap stars in the Kepler long-cadence data, where true oscillations above the Nyquist limit of 283.21 μHz can be reliably distinguished from aliases as a consequence of the barycentric time corrections applied to the Kepler data. We find evidence for rapid oscillations in six stars: KIC 6631188, KIC 7018170, KIC 10685175, KIC 11031749, KIC 11296437 and KIC 11409673, and identify each star as chemically peculiar through either pre-existing classifications or spectroscopic measurements. For each star, we identify the principal pulsation mode, and are abl…
Although roughly half of all stars are considered to be part of binary or multiple systems, there are only two confirmed cases of RR Lyrae pulsators with companions. One of them is TU Uma (Wade et al 1999) - a classical RR Lyrae star in a very eccentric orbit - and the other is OGLE-BLG-RRLYR-02792 (Pietrzynski et al 2012). Considering the wealth of well-studied RR Lyrae stars, this number is astoundingly low. Having more RR Lyrae stars in binary systems at hand would be extremely valuable to get independent measurements of the masses. The data from the Kepler mission with their unprecedented …
The orbital parameters of binaries at intermediate periods ($10^2$--$10^3$ d) are difficult to measure with conventional methods and are very incomplete. We have undertaken a new survey, applying our pulsation timing method to {\it Kepler} light curves of 2224 main-sequence A/F stars and found 341 non-eclipsing binaries. We calculate the orbital parameters for 317 PB1 systems (single-pulsator binaries) and 24 PB2s (double-pulsators). The method reaches down to small mass ratios $q=0.02$ and yields a highly homogeneous sample. We parametrize the mass-ratio distribution using both inversion and …
