We investigate the group field theory formulation of the EPRL/FK spin foam models. These models aim at a dynamical, i.e. non-topological formulation of 4D quantum gravity. We introduce a saddle point method for general group field theory amplitudes and compare it with existing results, in particular for a second order correction to the EPRL/FK propagator.
We numerically estimate the divergence of several two-vertex diagrams that contribute to the radiative corrections for the Lorentzian EPRL spin foam propagator. We compute the amplitudes as functions of a homogeneous cutoff over the bulk quantum numbers, fixed boundary data, and different Immirzi parameters, and find that for a class of two-vertex diagrams, those with fewer than six internal faces are convergent. The calculations are done with the numerical framework sl2cfoam-next.
I study the corrections engendered by the insertion of a "melon" graph in the bulk of the first-order spinfoam used for the graviton propagator. I find that these corrections are highly non-trivial and, in particular, that they concern those terms which disappear in the Bojowald-Bianchi-Magliaro-Perini limit of vanishing Barbero-Immirzi parameter at fixed area. This fact is the first realization of the often cited idea that the spinfoam amplitude receives higher order corrections under the refinement of the underlying two-complex.
We show that a natural modification of the EPRL/FK vertex amplitude gives a finite spin foam model whose effective action gives the Einstein-Hilbert action in the limit of large spins and arbitrarily fine spacetime triangulations. The first-order quantum corrections can be easily computed and we show how to calculate the higher-order corrections.
Modern spin-foam models of four dimensional gravity are based on a discrete version of the $Spin(4)$ Plebanski formulation. Beyond what is already in the literature, we clarify the meaning of different Plebanski sectors in this classical discrete model. We show that the linearized simplicity constraints used in the EPRL and FK models are not sufficient to impose a restriction to a single Plebanski sector, but rather, three Plebanski sectors are mixed. We propose this as the reason for certain extra `undesired' terms in the asymptotics of the EPRL vertex analyzed by Barrett et al. This explanat…
We numerically study the next-to-leading order corrections of the Lorentzian Engle-Pereira-Rovelli-Livine (EPRL) 4-simplex amplitude in the large-$j$ expansions. We perform large-$j$ expansions of Lorentzian EPRL 4-simplex amplitudes with two different types of boundary states, the coherent intertwiners and the coherent spin-network, and numerically compute the leading-order and the next-to-leading order $O(1/j)$ contributions of these amplitudes. We also study the dependences of these $O(1/j)$ corrections on the Barbero-Immirzi parameter $γ$. We show that they, as functions of $γ$, stabilize …
The graphical calculus method is generalized to study the relation between covariant and canonical dynamics of loop quantum gravity. On one hand, a graphical derivation of the partition function of the generalized Euclidean Engle-Pereira-Rovelli-Livine (EPRL) spin-foam model is presented. On the other hand, the action of a Euclidean Hamiltonian constraint operator on certain spin network states is calculated by graphical method. It turns out that the EPRL model can provide a rigging map such that the Hamiltonian constraint operator is weakly satisfied on certain physical states for the Immirzi…
We study the cosmological sector of the Lorentzian Barrett-Crane (BC) model coupled to a free massless scalar field in its Group Field Theory (GFT) formulation, corresponding to the mean-field hydrodynamics obtained from coherent condensate states. The relational evolution of the condensate with respect to the scalar field yields effective dynamics of homogeneous and isotropic cosmologies, similar to those previously obtained in $\text{SU}(2)$-based EPRL-like models. Also in this manifestly Lorentzian setting, in which only continuous $\text{SL}(2,\mathbb{C})$-representations are used, we obta…
The first-order loop quantum gravity correction of the simplest, classical general-relativistic Friedmann Hamiltonian constraint, emerging from a holomorphic spinfoam cosmological model peaked on homogeneous, isotropic geometries, is studied. The quantum Hamiltonian constraint, satisfied by the EPRL transition amplitude between the boundary cosmological coherent states, includes a contribution of the order of the Planck constant $\hbar$ that also appears in the corresponding semiclassical symplectic model. The analysis of this term gives a quantum-gravitational correction to the classical Frie…
Spin-foam models are hoped to provide a dynamics for loop quantum gravity. These start from the Plebanski formulation of gravity, in which gravity is obtained from a topological field theory, BF theory, through constraints, which, however, select more than one gravitational sector, as well as an unphysical degenerate sector. We show this is why terms beyond the needed Feynman-prescribed one appear in the semiclassical limit of the EPRL spin-foam amplitude. By quantum mechanically isolating a single gravitational sector, we modify this amplitude, yielding a spin-foam amplitude for loop quantum …
We examine the four dimensional path integral for Euclidean quantum gravity in the context of the EPRL-FK spin foam model. The state sum is restricted to certain symmetric configurations which resembles the geometry of a flat homogeneous and isotropic universe. The vertex structure is specially chosen so that a basic concept of expansion and contraction of the lattice universe is allowed. We compute the asymptotic form of the spin foam state sum in the symmetry restricted setting, and recover a Regge-type action, as well as an explicit form of the Hessian matrix, which captures quantum correct…
We investigate the corrections to the inflationary cosmological dynamics due to a $R^2$ term in the Palatini formulation which may arise as quantum corrections to the effective Lagrangian in early universe. We found that the standard Friedmann equation will not be changed when the scalar field is in the potential energy dominated era. However, in the kinetic energy dominated era, the standard Friedmann equation will be modified and in the case of closed and flat universe, the Modified Friedmann equation will automatically require that the initial kinetic energy density of the scalar field must…
We consider the well-posedness of the initial value problem for Einstein-Maxwell theory modified by higher derivative effective field theory corrections. Field redefinitions can be used to bring the leading parity-symmetric 4-derivative corrections to a form which gives second order equations of motion. We show that a recently introduced "modified harmonic" gauge condition can be used to obtain a formulation of these theories which admits a well-posed initial value problem when the higher derivative corrections to the equations of motion are small.
Group field theories are particular quantum field theories defined on D copies of a group which reproduce spin foam amplitudes on a space-time of dimension D. In these lecture notes, we present the general construction of group field theories, merging ideas from tensor models and loop quantum gravity. This lecture is organized as follows. In the first section, we present basic aspects of quantum field theory and matrix models. The second section is devoted to general aspects of tensor models and group field theory and in the last section we examine properties of the group field formulation of …
We compute numerically the Lorentzian Engle-Pereira-Rovelli-Livine (EPRL) spinfoam propagator on a 4-simplex, by adapting the methods of Lefschetz thimble and Markov Chain Monte-Carlo to oscillatory spinfoam integrals. Our method can compute any spinfoam observables at relatively large spins. We obtain the numerical results of the propagators at different spins and demonstrate their consistency with the expected spinfoam semi-classical behavior in the large spin limit. Our results exhibit significant quantum corrections at smaller spins. Our method is reliable and thus can be employed to disco…
The present notes are based on three lectures, each ninety minutes long, prepared for the school 'Integrability, Dualities and Deformations', that ran from 23 to 27 August 2021 in Santiago de Compostela and virtually. These lectures, aimed at graduate students, require only a basic knowledge of string theory. The main goal is to introduce $α'$-corrections to the gravitational sector of different formulations of closed string theory and to reformulate them using novel techniques based on double field theory.
We study the dynamics of perturbations representing deviations from perfect isotropy in the context of the emergent cosmology obtained from the group field theory formalism for quantum gravity. Working in the mean field approximation of the group field theory formulation of the Lorentzian EPRL model, we derive the equations of motion for such perturbations to first order. We then study these equations around a specific simple isotropic background, characterised by the fundamental representation of $\mbox{SU(2)}$, and in the regime of the effective cosmological dynamics corresponding to the bou…
Recently a quantum group deformation of EPRL spinfoam model was proposed in arXiv:1012.4216 by one of the authors, and in arXiv:1012.4784 by Fairbairn and Meusburger. It is interesting to study the high spin asymptotics of the quantum group spinfoam model, to see if it gives the discrete Einstein gravity with cosmological constant as its semiclassical limit. In this article we propose a new technique, which can simplify the analysis of the high spin asymptotics for quantum group spinfoam vertex amplitude. This technique can generalize the spinfoam asymptotic analysis developed by Barrett, et a…
We compare Higgs inflation in the metric and Palatini formulations of general relativity, with loop corrections are treated in a simple approximation. We consider Higgs inflation on the plateau, at a critical point, at a hilltop and in a false vacuum. In the last case there are only minor differences. Otherwise we find that in the Palatini formulation the tensor-to-scalar ratio is consistently suppressed, spanning the range $1\times10^{-13}<r<7\times10^{-5}$, compared to the metric case result $2\times10^{-5}<r<0.2$. Even when the values of $n_s$ and $r$ overlap, the running and running of the…
We study Higgs inflation in the Palatini formulation with the renormalisation group improved potential in the case when loop corrections generate a feature similar to an inflection point. Assuming that there is a threshold correction for the Higgs quartic coupling $λ$ and the top Yukawa coupling $y_t$, we scan the three-dimensional parameter space formed by the two jumps and the non-minimal coupling $ξ$. The spectral index $n_s$ can take any value in the observationally allowed range. The lower limit for the running is $α_s>-3.5\times10^{-3}$, and $α_s$ can be as large as the observational upp…
We discuss how the non-minimal coupling $ξϕ^2 R$ between the inflaton and the Ricci scalar affects predictions of single field inflation models in Palatini formalism. To transition radiation dominated era, the inflaton field $ϕ$ must interact to matter fields at the end of inflation. Interactions of the inflaton with other fields lead to radiative corrections to the inflationary potential. These radiative corrections can be explained at leading order by Coleman-Weinberg (CW) one-loop corrections. In this work, using two different prescriptions debated in the literature, the effect of radiative…
We present analytic solutions of Maxwell equations in the internal and external background spacetime of a slowly rotating magnetized neutron star. The star is considered isolated and in vacuum, with a dipolar magnetic field not aligned with the axis of rotation. With respect to a flat spacetime solution, general relativity introduces corrections related both to the monopolar and the dipolar parts of the gravitational field. In particular, we show that in the case of infinite electrical conductivity general relativistic corrections due to the dragging of reference frames are present, but only i…
The equation of state for radiation is derived in a canonical formulation of the electromagnetic field. This allows one to include correction terms expected from canonical quantum gravity and to infer implications to the universe evolution in radiation dominated epochs. Corrections implied by quantum geometry can be interpreted in physically appealing ways, relating to the conformal invariance of the classical equations.
We study the SL(2,C) Clebsch-Gordan coefficients appearing in the lorentzian EPRL spin foam amplitudes for loop quantum gravity. We show how the amplitudes decompose into SU(2) nj-symbols at the vertices and integrals over boosts at the edges. The integrals define edge amplitudes that can be evaluated analytically using and adapting results in the literature, leading to a pure state sum model formulation. This procedure introduces virtual representations which, in a manner reminiscent to virtual momenta in Feynman amplitudes, are off-shell of the simplicity constraints present in the theory, b…
Recent research in the geometric formulation of quantum theory has implied that Weyl Geometry can be used to merge quantum theory and general relativity consistently as classical field theories. In the Weyl Geometric framework, it seems that both quantum theory and gravity can merge consistently, once quantum theory is geometrized. The extended differential geometry can modify the quantum mechanical results into a more general nonlinear framework. Author shows that, how the extended differential geometry modifies the known quantum equations and also the modification to the Maxwell's electromag…
Effective field theory provides a way of parameterizing strong-field deviations from General Relativity that might be observable in the gravitational waves emitted in a black hole merger. To perform numerical simulations of mergers in such theories it is necessary that the equations be written in a form that admits a well-posed initial value formulation. We study gravity coupled to a scalar field including the leading (4-derivative) effective field theory corrections. We introduce a new class of "modified harmonic" gauges and gauge-fixed equations of motion, such that, at weak coupling, the eq…
We have recently presented a manifestly local and general coordinate invariant formulation of a nonlocal approach to the cosmological constant problem which has been proposed by Carroll and Remmen. In this article, based on our formulation, we investigate some quantum aspects of this approach to the cosmological constant problem. In particular, we explicitly evaluate quantum effects to the effective cosmological constant from matter fields at one-loop level, and show that the effective cosmological constant receives radiative corrections and is not stable against quantum corrections so that it…
We obtain Mathisson-Papapetrou-Tulczyjew-Dixon equations of a rotating body with given values of spin and momentum starting from Lagrangian action without auxiliary variables. MPTD-equations correspond to minimal interaction of our spinning particle with gravity. We shortly discuss some novel properties deduced from the Lagrangian form of MPTD-equations: emergence of an effective metric instead of the original one, non-commutativity of coordinates of representative point of the body, spin corrections to Newton potential due to the effective metric as well as spin corrections to the expression …
We extend the Non-Relativistic formulation of General Relativity (NRGR) given in Goldberger et al. (Phys Rev D 73:104029, 2006) to incorporate the effects of electromagnetic charge of the constituents of the binary. We incorporate the photon field in NRGR by giving the field decomposition and power counting rules. Using these, we develop the Feynman rules to describe photon and graviton interactions with point particle worldline. We then find the corrections to the Einstein-Infeld-Hoffmann Lagrangian (Einstein et al. in Ann Math 39:65-100, 1938) due to the presence of the photon field and elec…
Dilaton gravity with general brane localized interactions is investigated. Models with corrections up to arbitrary order in field derivatives are considered. Effective gravitational equations of motion at the brane are derived in the covariant approach. Dependence of such brane equations on the bulk quantities is discussed. It is shown that the number of the bulk independent brane equations of motion depends strongly on the symmetries assumed for the model and for the background. Examples with two and four derivatives of the fields are presented in more detail.
Cosmological tensor perturbations equations are derived for Hamiltonian cosmology based on Ashtekar's formulation of general relativity, including typical quantum gravity effects in the Hamiltonian constraint as they are expected from loop quantum gravity. This translates to corrections of the dispersion relation for gravitational waves. The main application here is the preservation of causality which is shown to be realized due to the absence of anomalies in the effective constraint algebra used.
Frame-dragging effect manifests itself as polarization direction rotation when linearly polarized electromagnetic/gravitational wave scatters from a spinning point source through gravitational interactions, an effect also known as the gravitational Faraday rotation. Treating general relativity as an effective field theory, the Faraday rotation angle and its quantum corrections are computed using scattering amplitudes. While the classical rotation angle is universal as expected from the equivalence principle, the quantum corrections are found to be different between electromagnetic and gravitat…
There has been recent speculation that the tunneling paradigm for Hawking radiation could -- after quantum-gravitational effects have suitably been incorporated -- provide a means for resolving the (black hole) information loss paradox. A prospective quantum-gravitational effect is the logarithmic-order correction to the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy/area law. In this letter, it is demonstrated that, even with the inclusion of the logarithmic correction (or, indeed, the quantum correction up to any perturbative order), the tunneling formalism is still unable to resolve the stated paradox. Moreove…
A consistent formulation to incorporate massive neutrinos in the perturbation theory of the effective CDM+baryons fluid is introduced. In this formulation all linear k dependence in the growth functions of CDM+baryons perturbations, as well as all consequent additional mode coupling at higher orders, are taken into account to any desirable accuracy. Our formulation regards the neutrino fraction, which is constant in time after the non-relativistic transition of neutrinos, and much smaller than unity, as the coupling constant of the theory. Then the "bare" perturbations are those in the massles…
In the Loop Quantum Gravity, black holes (or even more general Isolated Horizons) are described by a SU(2) Chern-Simons theory. There is an equivalent formulation of the horizon degrees of freedom in terms of a U(1) gauge theory which is just a gauged fixed version of the SU(2) theory. These developments will be surveyed here. Quantum theory based on either formulation can be used to count the horizon micro-states associated with quantum geometry fluctuations and from this the micro-canonical entropy can be obtained. We shall review the computation in SU(2) formulation. Leading term in the ent…
We develop geometric optics expansion up to the subleading order for circularly polarized electromagnetic waves on curved spacetime. This subleading order geometric optics expansion, in which the conventional eikonal function is modified by inserting a carefully chosen helicity-dependent correction, is called spin optics. We derive the propagation and polarization equations in the spin optics approximation as electromagnetic waves travel in curved spacetime. Polarization-dependent deviation of the light ray trajectory from the geodesic, describing the gravitational spin Hall effect, is observe…
We demonstrate how to construct purely metric modifications of gravity which agree with general relativity in the weak field regime appropriate to the solar system, but which possess an ultra-weak field regime when the gravitational acceleration becomes comparable to $a_0 \sim 10^{-10} {\rm m/s}^2$. In this ultra-weak field regime, the models reproduce the MOND force without dark matter and also give enough gravitational lensing to be consistent with existing data. Our models are nonlocal and might conceivably derive from quantum corrections to the effective field equations.
Quantum gravity places entirely new challenges on the formulation of a consistent theory as well as on an extraction of potentially observable effects. Quantum corrections due to the gravitational field are commonly expected to be tiny because of the smallness of the Planck length. However, a consistent formulation now shows that key features of quantum gravity imply magnification effects on correction terms which are especially important in cosmology with its long stretches of evolution. After a review of the salient features of recent canonical quantizations of gravity and their implications…
Once quantum corrections are taken into account, the strong coupling limit of the $ξ$-attractor models (in metric gravity) might depart from the usual Starobinsky solution and move into linear inflation. Furthermore, it is well known that the metric and Palatini formulations of gravity lead to different inflationary predictions in presence of non-minimally couplings between gravity and the inflaton. In this letter we show that for a certain class of non-minimally coupled models, loop corrections will lead to a linear inflation attractor regardless of the adopted gravity formulation.
An algebraic formulation of general relativity is proposed. The formulation is applicable to quantum gravity and noncommutative space. To investigate quantum gravity we develop the canonical formalism of operator geometry, after reconstructing an algebraic canonical formulation on analytical dynamics. The remarkable fact is that the constraint equation and evolution equation of the gravitational system are algebraically unified. From the discussion of regularization we find the quantum correction of the semi-classical gravity is same as that already known in quantum field theory.
