An analytical expression for the transfer integral HAB between the localized magnetic orbitals in superexchange-coupled dimers as a function of the type of atoms and geometry of the molecule has been derived by explicitly including orbital interactions. It is shown that HAB plays the key role for the magnetic coupling constant J in understanding magneto-structural correlations. The reliability and capability of this approach is confirmed by comparison with numerical electronic structure calculations in the local spin-density approximation on singly and doubly bridged Cu(II)-dimers with fluorine ligands. All results can be calculated and understood within the analytical formalism representing, therefore, a powerful tool for understanding the magneto-structural correlations and also for constructing magnetic orbitals analytically.
We study a model for orbitally degenerate Mott insulators, where localized electrons possess t_2g degrees of freedom coupled by several, competing, exchange mechanisms. We provide evidence for two distinct strongly fluctuating regimes, depending on whether superexchange or direct exchange mechanism predominates. In the superexchange-dominated regime, the ground state is dimerized, with nearest neighbor orbital singlets covering the lattice. By deriving an effective quantum dimer model and analyzing it numerically, we characterize this dimerized phase as a valence bond crystal stabilized by sin…
Cu$_2$Fe$_2$Ge$_4$O$_{13}$ is a bicomponent compound that consists of Cu dimers and Fe chains with separate energy scale. By inelastic neutron scattering technique with high-energy resolution we observed the indirect Fe - Fe exchange coupling by way of the Cu dimers. The obtained parameters of the effective indirect interaction and related superexchange interactions are consistent with those estimated semi-statically. The consistency reveals that the Cu dimers play the role of nonmagnetic media in the indirect magnetic interaction.
The magneto-structural correlations of superexchange-coupled doubly hydroxo-bridged Cu(II)-dimers have been investigated. To this end, an analytical approach has been applied to [Cu2(OH)2F4]2- model complexes. This approach supplies an analytical scheme, based on orbital interactions, for calculating the transfer integral, HAB, which is shown to play the key role in the magnetic coupling constant J for understanding magneto-structural correlations. The single contributions to the transfer integral are calculated and described explicitly. Therefore, this approach supplies a detailed insight int…
We investigated the magnetic properties of the system CuTe2O5 by susceptibility and electron spin resonance measurements. The anisotropy of the effective g-factors and the ESR linewidth indicates that the anticipated structural dimer does not correspond to the singlet-forming magnetic dimer. Moreover, the spin susceptibility of CuTe2O5 can only be described by taking into account interdimer interactions of the same order of magnitude than the intradimer coupling. Analyzing the exchange couplings in the system we identify the strongest magnetic coupling between two Cu ions to be mediated by sup…
The spin-orbital model for triply degenerate t_2g electrons on a triangular lattice has been shown to be dominated by dimers: the phase diagram contains both strongly resonating, compound spin-orbital dimer states and quasi-static, spin-singlet valence-bond (VB) states. To elucidate the nature of the true ground state in these different regimes, the model is mapped to a number of quantum dimer models (QDMs), each of which has three dimer colors. The generic multicolored QDM, illustrated for the two- and three-color cases, possesses a topological color structure, "color vison" excitations, and …
A microscopic magnetic model for alpha-Cu2P2O7 is evaluated in a combined theoretical and experimental study. Despite a dominant intradimer coupling J1, sizable interdimer couplings enforce long-range magnetic ordering at T_N=27 K. The spin model for alpha-Cu2P2O7 is compared to the models of the isostructural beta-Cu2V2O7 and alpha-Cu2As2O7 systems. As a surprise, coupled dimers in alpha-Cu2P2O7 and alternating chains in alpha-Cu2As2O7 contrast with a honeycomb lattice in beta-Cu2V2O7. We find that the qualitative difference in the coupling regime of these isostructural compounds is governed …
The weakly interacting S=1/2 dimers system Sr3Cr2O8 has been investigated by powder neutron diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering. Our data reveal a structural phase transition below room temperature corresponding to an antiferro-orbital ordering with nearly 90 degrees arrangement of the occupied 3z^2-r^2 d-orbital. This configuration leads to a drastic reduction of the inter-dimer exchange energies with respect to the high temperature orbital-disorder state, as shown by a spin-dimer analysis of the super-superexchange interactions performed using the Extended Huckel Tight Binding metho…
We study a multi-orbital Hubbard--Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model for the one-dimensional (1D) corner-shared cuprates in the adiabatic and nonadiabatic limits using the exact diagonalization and determinant quantum Monte Carlo methods. Our results demonstrate that lattice dimerization can be achieved only over a narrow range of couplings slightly below a critical coupling $g_c$ at half-filling. Beyond this critical coupling, the sign of the effective hopping changes, and the lattice becomes unstable. We also examine the model's temperature-dependent uniform magnetic susceptibility and the dynamical…
The origin of the long-wavelength incommensurate magnetic structure of Ca3Co2O6 is discussed considering possible inter-chains super-superexchange paths. The experimental value of the propagation vector k=(0,0,$Δ$) with $Δ$ $>$ 1 can be reproduced only if one considers the next nearest super-superexchange interaction. A spin-dimer analysis using the Extended-Huckel Tight-Binding method confirms that, despite longer interatomic Co-Co distances, the latter interaction is indeed much stronger. The stability of the observed structure with respect to certain commensurate states is discussed.
The research field of magnetic frustration is dominated by triangle-based lattices but exotic phenomena can also be observed in pentagonal networks. A peculiar noncollinear magnetic order is indeed known to be stabilized in Bi2Fe4O9 materializing a Cairo pentagonal lattice. We present the spin wave excitations in the magnetically ordered state, obtained by inelastic neutron scattering. They reveal an unconventional excited state related to local precession of pairs of spins. The magnetic excitations are then modeled to determine the superexchange interactions for which the frustration is indee…
Heat capacity and magnetic torque measurements are used to probe the anisotropic temperature-field phase diagram of the frustrated spin dimer compound Ba3Mn2O8 in the field range from 0T to 18T. For fields oriented along the c axis a single magnetically ordered phase is found in this field range, whereas for fields oriented along the a axis two distinct phases are observed. The present measurements reveal a surprising non-monotonic evolution of the phase diagram as the magnetic field is rotated in the [001]-[100] plane. The angle dependence of the critical field (Hc1) that marks the closing of…
Starting from the Mott insulator picture for cubic vanadates, we derive and investigate the model of superexchange interactions between V$^{3+}$ ions, with nearly degenerate $t_{2g}$ orbitals occupied by two electrons each. The superexchange interactions are strongly frustrated and demonstrate a strong interrelation between possible types of magnetic and orbital order. We elucidate the prominent role played by fluctuations of $yz$ and $xz$ orbitals which generate ferromagnetic superexchange interactions even in the absence of Hund's exchange. In this limit we find orbital valence bond state wh…
Short-range resonating-valence bond states in an orbitally degenerate magnet on a honeycomb lattice is studied. A quantum-dimer model is derived from the Hamiltonian which represents the superexchange interaction and the dynamical Jahn-Teller (JT) effect. We introduce two local units termed "spin-orbital singlet dimer", where two spins in a nearest-neighbor bond form a singlet state associated with an orbital polarization along the bond, and "local JT singlet", where an orbital polarization is quenched due to the dynamical JT effect. A derived quantum-dimer model consists of the hopping of the…
Recently, a Verwey-type transition in the mixed-valence alkali sesquioxide Cs$_4$O$_6$ was deduced from the charge ordering of molecular peroxide O$_2^{2-}$ and superoxide O$_2^-$ anions accompanied by the structural transformation and a dramatic change in electronic conductivity [Adler et al, Sci. Adv 4, eaap7581 (2018)]. Here, we report that in the sister compound Rb$_4$O$_6$ a similar Verwey-type charge ordering transition is strongly linked to O$_2^-$ orbital and spin dynamics. On cooling, a powder neutron diffraction experiment reveals a charge ordering and a cubic-to-tetragonal transitio…
Thallium copper chloride is a quantum spin liquid of S = 1/2 Cu^2+ dimers. Interdimer superexchange interactions give a three-dimensional magnon dispersion and a spin gap significantly smaller than the dimer coupling. This gap is closed by an applied hydrostatic pressure of approximately 2kbar or by a magnetic field of 5.6T, offering a unique opportunity to explore the both types of quantum phase transition and their associated critical phenomena. We use a bond-operator formulation to obtain a continuous description of all disordered and ordered phases, and thus of the transitions separating t…
By calculating the electronic, orbital, magnetic and lattice structure of half-doped manganites we establish the central role of oxygen buckling caused by the tilting of the MnO$_6$ octahedra -- in essence a steric effect. The buckling itself does not change the Mn-Mn bonds. Instead it drives the system towards an instability where these bonds can dimerize. In presence of electron-electron interactions, this instability can fully develop and beyond a critical buckling a Zener polaron groundstate with dimerized spins, lattice and orbitals forms spontaneously, resulting in a multiferroic state.
We present a new linked cluster expansion for calculating properties of multiparticle excitation spectra to high orders. We use it to obtain the two-particle spectra for systems of coupled spin-half dimers. We find that even for weakly coupled dimers the spectrum is very rich, consisting of many bound states. The number of bound states depends on both geometry of coupling and frustration. Many of the bound states can only be seen by going to sufficiently high orders in the perturbation theory, showing the extended character of the pair-attraction.
We consider the exchange Hamiltonian H_ST = -J Sum_{<rr'>} (2 S_r S_r' - 1/2) (2 T_r T_r' - 1/2) describing two isotropic spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnets coupled by a quartic term on equivalent bonds. The model is relevant for systems with orbital degeneracy and strong electron-vibron coupling in the large Hubbard repulsion limit. To investigate the ground state properties we use a Green's Function Monte Carlo, calculating energy gaps and correlation functions, the latter through the forward walking technique. In one dimension we find that the ground state is a ``crystal'' of valence bond…
Strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) effects of heavy $d$-orbital elements have long been neglected in describing the ground states of their compounds thereby overlooking a variety of fascinating and yet unexplored magnetic and electronic states, until recently. The spin-orbit entangled electrons in such compounds can get stabilized into unusual spin-orbit multiplet $J$-states which warrants severe investigations. Here we show using detailed magnetic and thermodynamic studies and theoretical calculations the ground state of Ba$_3$ZnIr$_2$O$_9$, a 6$H$ hexagonal perovskite is a close realisation of…
Using a point-charge calculation of the electrostatic crystal field, we determine the non-degenerate orbital ground state of the ferromagnetic Mott insulator YTiO3, which is found to agree perfectly with experiment. Based on the orbital order, we obtain by perturbation theory an effective spin Hamiltonian that describes the magnetic superexchange between nearest-neighbor Ti ions. The superexchange Hamiltonian includes, in addition to the isotropic Heisenberg coupling, antisymmetric (Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya) and symmetric anisotropy terms, caused by the spin-orbit interaction on the Ti ions. We f…
Phase diagram of half-doped perovskite manganites is studied within the extended double-exchange model. To demonstrate the role of orbital degrees of freedom both one- and two-orbital models are examined. A rich phase diagram is obtained in the mean-field theory at zero temperature as a function of J (antiferromagnetic (AFM) superexchange interaction) and V (intersite Coulomb repulsion). For the one-orbital model a charge-ordered (CO) state appears at any value of V with different types of magnetic order which changes with increasing J from ferromagnetic (F) to AFM ones of the types A, C and G…
Spin-$1/2$ chains with alternating antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic couplings have attracted considerable interest due to the topological character of their spin excitations. Here, using density functional theory and density matrix renormalization group methods, we have systematically studied the dimerized chain system Na$_2$Cu$_2$TeO$_6$. Near the Fermi level, the dominant states are mainly contributed by the Cu $3d_{x^2-y^2}$ orbitals highly hybridized with the O $2p$ orbitals in the nonmagnetic phase, leading to an "effective" single-orbital low-energy model. Furthermore, the bandwidth o…
