Consider a discrete-time quantum walk on the $N$-cycle governed by the following condition: at every time step of the walk, the option persists, with probability $p$, of exercising a projective measurement on the coin degree of freedom. For a bipartite quantum system of this kind, we prove that the von Neumann entropy of the total density operator converges to its maximum value. Thus, when influenced by decoherence, the mutual information between the two subsystems, corresponding respectively to the space of the coin and the space of the walker, eventually must diminish to zero. To put it plainly, any level of decoherence greater than zero forces the system eventually to become completely "disentangled".}
In quantum information theory, von Neumann entropy plays an important role. The entropies can be obtained analytically only for a few states. In continuous variable system, even evaluating entropy numerically is not an easy task since the dimension is infinite. We develop the perturbation theory systematically for calculating von Neumann entropy of non-degenerate systems as well as degenerate systems. The result turns out to be a practical way of the expansion calculation of von Neumann entropy.
We explore the relation between the von Neumann entropy and the Renyi entropies of integer orders for shift-invariant quasi-free Fermionic lattice systems. We investigate approximating the von Neumann entropy by a combination of integer-order Renyi entropies and give an estimate for the quality of such an approximation.
The Rényi and von Neumann entropies of various bipartite Gaussian states are derived analytically. We also discuss on the tripartite purification for the bipartite states when some particular conditions hold. The generalization to non-Gaussian states is briefly discussed.
he analytic formulas for structure constants of $su(2S+1)$ algebra in terms of $3jm$ and $6j$ symbols of $su(2)$ have been derived for the decomplexification of the Liouville-von Neumann equation.
The von Neumann entropy of a density matrix of dimension d, expressed in terms of the first d-1 integer order Rényi entropies, is monotonically increasing in Rényi entropies of even order and decreasing in those of odd order.
We review the postulates of quantum mechanics that are needed to discuss the von Neumann's entropy. We introduce it as a generalization of Shannon's entropy and propose a simple game that makes easier understanding its physical meaning.
We apply the machinery of projection lattices and von Neumann algebras to analyze the question of how modal interpretations can (and do) circumvent von Neumann's infamous 'no-hidden-variables' theorem.
One to one correspondence between the decay law of the von Neumann-Wigner type potentials and the asymptotic behaviour of the wave functions representing bound states in the continuum is established.
Modern development of quantum technologies based on quantum information theory stimulated analysis of proposed computational, cryptographic and teleportational schemes from the viewpoint of quantum foundations. It is evident that not all mathematical calculations performed in complex Hilbert space can be directly realized in physical space. Recently by analyzing the original EPR paper we found that they argument was based on the misuse of the von Neumann's projection postulate. Opposite to von Neumann, Einstein, Podolsky and Rosen (EPR) applied this postulate to observables represented by oper…
In this paper, we derive a general formula of the tangle for pure states of three qubits, and present three explicit local unitary (LU) polynomial invariants. Our result goes beyond the classical work of tangle, 3-tangle and von Neumann entropy of entanglement for Ac\'ın et al.' Schmidt decomposition (ASD) of three qubits by connecting the tangle, 3-tangle, and von Neumann entropy for ASD with Ac\'ın et al.'s LU invariants. In particular, our result reveals a general relation among tangle, 3-tangle, and von Neumann entropy, together with a relation among their averages. The relations can help …
We present an optical scheme that realizes the standard von Neumann measurement model, providing an indirect measurement of a quadrature of the field with controllable Gaussian state-reduction. The scheme is made of simple optical elements, as laser sources, beam splitters, and phase sensitive amplifiers, along with a feedback mechanism that uses a Pockels cell. We show that the von Neumann measurement is achieved without the need of working in a ultra-short pulsed regime.
The name of John von Neumann is common both in quantum mechanics and computer science. Are they really two absolutely unconnected areas? Many works devoted to quantum computations and communications are serious argument to suggest about existence of such a relation, but it is impossible to touch the new and active theme in a short review. In the paper are described the structures and models of linear algebra and just due to their generality it is possible to use universal description of very different areas as quantum mechanics and theory of Bayesian image analysis, associative memory, neural …
Few things in physics have caused so much hand-wringing as von Neumann's collapse hypothesis. Unable to derive it mathematically, von Neumann attributed it to interaction with the observer's brain! Few physicists agreed, but tweaks of von Neumann's measurement theory did not lead to collapse, and Shimony and Brown proved theorems establishing `the insolubility of the quantum measurement problem'. Many different `interpretations' of quantum mechanics were put forward, none gained a consensus, and some scholars suggested that the foundations of quantum mechanics were flawed to begin with. Yet, i…
Let ${\mathcal M}$ be a von Neumann algebra with no central summands of type I$_1$. It is shown that every nonlinear $ξ-$Lie derivation ($ξ\neq 1$) on $\mathcal M$ is an additive derivation.
We extend Gour et al's characterization of quantum majorization via conditional min-entropy to the context of semifinite von Neumann algebras. Our method relies on a connection between conditional min-entropy and operator space projective tensor norm for injective von Neumann algebras. This approach also connects the tracial Hahn-Banach theorem of Helton, Klep and McCullough to noncommutative vector-valued $L_1$-space.
We review the famous no-hidden-variables theorem in John von Neumann's 1932 book on the mathematical foundations of quantum mechanics. We describe the notorious gap in von Neumann's argument, pointed out by Grete Hermann in 1935 and, more famously, by John Bell in 1966. We disagree with recent papers claiming that Hermann and Bell failed to understand what von Neumann was actually doing.
We present a model of Selinger and Valiron's quantum lambda calculus based on von Neumann algebras, and show that the model is adequate with respect to the operational semantics.
Wikipedia has claimed for over three years now that John von Neumann was the "first quantum Bayesian." In context, this reads as stating that von Neumann inaugurated QBism, the approach to quantum theory promoted by Fuchs, Mermin and Schack. This essay explores how such a claim is, historically speaking, unsupported.
Recently, attention has returned to the now-famous 1932 thought experiment in which John von Neumann establishes the form of the quantum mechanical von Neumann entropy -Tr $ ρ\ln ρ$ ($S_{VN}$), supposedly by arguing for its correspondence with the phenomenological thermodynamic entropy ($S_{TD}$). Hemmo and Shenker (2006) reconstruct von Neumann's thought experiment and argue that it fails to establish this desired correspondence. Prunkl (2019) and Chua (2019) challenge Hemmo and Shenker's result in turn. This paper aims to provide a new foundation for the current debate by revisiting the orig…
We show that the oriented context category and the oriented spectral presheaf are complete invariants of a von Neumann algebra not isomorphic to $\mathbb{C}\oplus\mathbb{C}$ and with no direct summand of type $I_2$.
We used the von Neumann entropy to study the single and many-particle on-site localizations of stationary states for an anisotropic Heisenberg spin-1/2 chain. With a constructed bounded sequence of on-site energies for single and many-particle systems we demonstrate that the von Neumann entropy approaches zero indicating strong on-site localizations for all states. On the contrary, random on-site energy sequence does not lead to strong on-site confinement of all states. Our numerical results indicate that the von Neumann entropy provides a new insight to analyze on-site localizations for these…
In this paper we describe the structure of all sequential isomorphisms between the sets of von Neumann algebra effects. It turns out that if the underlying algebras have no commutative direct summands, then every sequential isomorphism between the sets of their effects extends to the direct sum of a *-isomorphism and a *-antiisomorphism between the underlying von Neumann algebras.
For von Neumann algebras M, N not isomorphic to C^2 and without type I_2 summands, we show that for an order-isomorphism f:AbSub(M)->AbSub(N) between the posets of abelian von Neumann subalgebras of M and N, there is a unique Jordan *-isomorphism g:M->N with the image g[S] equal to f(S) for each abelian von Neumann subalgebra S of M. The converse also holds. This shows the Jordan structure of a von Neumann algebra not isomorphic to C^2 and without type I_2 summands is determined by the poset of its abelian subalgebras, and has implications in recent approaches to foundational issues in quantum…
A new form of a binary Darboux transformation is used to generate analytical solutions of a nonlinear Liouville-von Neumann equation. General theory is illustrated by explicit examples.
Quantum bialgebras derivable from Uq(sl2) which contain idempotents and von Neumann regular Cartan-like generators are introduced and investigated. Various types of antipodes (invertible and von Neumann regular) on these bialgebras are constructed, which leads to a Hopf algebra structure and a von Neumann-Hopf algebra structure, respectively. For them, explicit forms of some particular R-matrices (also, invertible and von Neumann regular) are presented, and the latter respects the Pierce decomposition.
We present a simplified proof of the von Neumann's Quantum Ergodic Theorem. This important result was initially published in german by J. von Neumann in 1929. We are interested here in the time evolution $ψ_t$, $t\geq 0$, (for large times) under the Schrodinger equation associated to a given fixed Hamiltonian $H : \mathcal{H} \to \mathcal{H}$ and a general initial condition $ψ_0$. The dimension of the Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$ is finite.
