Recent observations have revealed that red, optically--passive spiral galaxies with little or no optical emission lines, harbour significant amounts of dust-obscured star formation. We propose that these observational results can be explained if the spatial distributions of the cold gas and star-forming regions in these spiral galaxies are significantly more compact than those in blue star-forming spirals. Our numerical simulations show that if the sizes of star-forming regions in spiral galaxies with disk sizes of R_d are ~ 0.3R_d, such galaxies appear to have lower star formation rates as well as higher degrees of dust extinction. This is mainly because star formation in these spirals occurs only in the inner regions where both the gas densities and metallicities are higher, and hence the dust extinction is also significantly higher. We discuss whether star formation occurring preferentially in the inner regions of spirals is closely associated with the stripping of halo and disk gas via some sort of environmental effect. We suggest that the "outside-in truncation of star formation" is the key to a better understanding of apparently optically--passive spirals with dusty star-forming regions.
We report detection of four IRAC sources in the GOODS-South field with an extremely red color of H$-$[3.6]$>$4.5. The four sources are not detected in the deep HST WFC3 H-band image with H$_{limit}$=28.3 mag. We find that only 3 types of SED templates can produce such a red H$-$[3.6] color: a very dusty SED with the Calzetti extinction of A$_V$=16 mag at z=0.8; a very dusty SED with the SMC extinction of A$_V$=8 mag at z=2.0$\sim$2.2; and an 1Gyr SSP with A$_V \sim$0.8 at z=5.7. We argue that these sources are unlikely dusty galaxies at z$\leq$2.2 based on absent strong MIPS 24$μ$m emission. T…
A new set of color selection criteria (VJL) analogous with the BzK method is designed to select both star-forming galaxies (SFGs) and passively-evolving galaxies (PEGs) at 2.3<z<3.5 by using rest-frame UV--optical (V-J vs. J-L) colors. The criteria are thoroughly tested with theoretical stellar population synthesis models and real galaxies with spectroscopic redshifts to evaluate their efficiency and contamination. We apply the well-tested VJL criteria to the HST/WFC3 Early Release Science field and study the physical properties of selected galaxies. The redshift distribution of selected SFGs …
We present the dust properties and star-formation histories of local submillimetre-selected galaxies in Herschel-ATLAS, classified by optical morphology. The early-type galaxies (ETGs) that are detected contain as much dust as typical spirals, and form a unique sample that has been blindly selected at submillimetre wavelengths. Comparing H-ATLAS galaxies to a control sample of optically selected galaxies, we find 5.5% of luminous ETGs are detected in H-ATLAS. The H-ATLAS ETGs contain a significant mass of cold dust: the mean dust mass is 5.5x10^7 Msun, with individual galaxies ranging from 9x1…
We present an analysis of the mid-infrared (MIR) colours of 165 70um-detected galaxies in the Shapley supercluster core (SSC) at z=0.048 using panoramic Spitzer/MIPS 24 and 70um imaging. While the bulk of galaxies show f70/f24 colours typical of local star-forming galaxies, we identify a significant sub-population of 23 70micron-excess galaxies, whose MIR colours (f70/f24>25) are much redder and cannot be reproduced by any of the standard model infrared SEDs. These galaxies are found to be strongly concentrated towards the cores of the five clusters that make up the SSC, and also appear rare a…
We explore the relation between colour and specific star formation rate (derived from optical spectra obtained by SDSS DR4) of over 6,000 galaxies (M_r<=-20.5) in and around low redshift (z<0.12) clusters. Even though most red galaxies have little or no ongoing star formation, and most blue galaxies are currently forming stars, there are significant populations of red star-forming (SF) and blue passive galaxies. This paper examines various properties of galaxies belonging to the latter two categories. These properties include morphological parameters, internal extinction, spectral features suc…
Using new, highly accurate photometric redshifts from the MUSYC medium-band survey in the Extended Chandra Deep Field South (ECDF-S), we fit synthetic stellar population models to compare AGN host galaxies to inactive galaxies at 0.8 < z < 1.2. We find that AGN host galaxies are predominantly massive galaxies on the red sequence and in the green valley of the color-mass diagram. Because both passive and dusty galaxies can appear red in optical colors, we use rest-frame near-infrared colors to separate passively evolving stellar populations from galaxies that are reddened by dust. As with the o…
We present Herschel/SPIRE images at 250, 350, and 500 μm of NGC 4244, a typical low-mass, disk-only and edge-on spiral galaxy. The dust disk is clumpy and shows signs of truncation at the break radius of the stellar disk. This disk coincides with the densest part of the Hi disk. We compare the Spectral Energy Distribution, including the new SPIRE fluxes, to 3D radiative transfer models; a smooth model disk and a clumpy model with embedded heating. Each model requires a very high value for the dust scale-length (h(dust) = 2 - 5 h(stars)), higher dust masses than previous models of NGC 4244 (Md …
We present the results from our narrow-band imaging surveys of HAEs at z=2.2 and z=2.5 in the Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep survey Field with near-infrared camera MOIRCS on Subaru Telescope. We have constructed a clean sample of 63 star-forming galaxies at z=2.2 and 46 at z=2.5. For 12 (or ~92%) out of 13 Hαemitters (HAEs) at z=2.2, their Hαemission lines have been successfully detected by the spectroscopy. While about 42% of the red, massive HAEs with M_*>10^{10.8} M_\odot contain AGNs, most of the blue, less massive ones are likely to be star-forming galaxies. This suggests that the AGN may play an…
In the three-dimensional parameter space defined by velocity dispersion, effective radius (R_e), and effective surface brightness (I_e), early-type galaxies are observed to populate a two-dimensional fundamental plane (FP) with finite thickness. In Paper III of this series, we showed that the thickness of the FP is predominantly due to variations in the stellar mass surface density (Sigma_*) inside the effective radius R_e. These variations represent differences in the dark matter fraction inside R_e (or possibly differences in the initial mass function) from galaxy to galaxy. This means that …
Passive early-type galaxies (ETGs) provide an ideal laboratory for studying the interplay between dust formation around evolved stars and its subsequent destruction in a hot gas. Using Spitzer-IRS and Herschel data we compare the dust production rate in the envelopes of evolved AGB stars with a constraint on the total dust mass. Early-type galaxies which appear to be truly passively evolving are not detected by Herschel. We thus derive a distance independent upper limit to the dust grain survival time in the hostile environment of ETGs of < 46 +/- 25 Myr for amorphous silicate grains. This imp…
We have searched for active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in K+A galaxies, using multiwavelength imaging and spectroscopy in the Bootes field of the NOAO Deep Wide-Field Survey. The K+A galaxies, which have had their star formation rapidly truncated, are selected via their strong Balmer absorption lines and weak H-alpha emission. Our sample consists of 24 K+A galaxies selected from 6594 0.10<z<0.35 galaxies brighter than I=20 with optical spectroscopy from the AGN and Galaxy Evolution Survey. Two thirds of the K+A galaxies are likely ongoing galaxy mergers, with nearby companion galaxies or tidal tai…
Aims. We study the dust content of a large optical input sample of 910 early-type galaxies (ETG) in the Virgo cluster, extending also to the dwarf ETG, and examine the results in relation with those on the other cold ISM components. Methods. We searched for far-infrared emission in all galaxies of the input sample using the 250 micron image of the Herschel Virgo Cluster Survey (HeViCS). This image covers a large fraction of the cluster. For the detected ETG we measured fluxes in 5 bands from 100 to 500 micron, and estimated the dust mass and temperature with modified black-body fits. Results. …
We present deep GMOS-S spectroscopy for 11 galaxy groups at 0.8<z<1.0, for galaxies with r_{AB}<24.75. Our sample is highly complete (>66%) for eight of the eleven groups. Using an optical-NIR colour-colour diagram, the galaxies in the sample were separated with a dust insensitive method into three categories: passive (red), star-forming (blue), and intermediate (green). The strongest environmental dependence is observed in the fraction of passive galaxies, which make up only ~20 per cent of the field in the mass range 10^{10.3}<M_{star}/M_\odot<10^{11.0} but are the dominant component of grou…
We present a wide-field H-alpha imaging survey of the rich cluster CL0939+4713 (Abell 851) at z=0.41 with Suprime-Cam on the Subaru Telescope, using the narrow-band filter NB921. The survey is sensitive to active galaxies with star formation rates down to ~0.3Msun/yr throughout the 27'x27' field, and we identified 445 H-alpha emitters along the large-scale structures around the cluster. Using this sample, we find that (1) the fraction of H-alpha emitters is a strong function of environment and shows a clear decline toward the cluster central region. We also find that (2) the color of H-alpha e…
In order to find the most extreme dust-hidden high-redshift galaxies, we select 196 extremely red objects in the Ks and IRAC bands (KIEROs, [Ks-4.5um](AB)>1.6) in the 0.06 deg^2 GOODS-N region. This selection avoids the Balmer breaks of galactic spectra at z<4 and picks up red galaxies with strong dust extinction. The photometric redshifts of KIEROs are between 1.5 and 5, with ~70% at z~2-4. KIEROs are very massive, with M*~10^10-10^12 Msun. They are optically faint and usually cannot be picked out by the Lyman break selection. On the other hand, the KIERO selection includes approximately half…
We investigate the effects of dense environments on galaxy evolution by examining how the properties of galaxies in the z = 1.6 protocluster Cl 0218.3-0510 depend on their location. We determine galaxy properties using spectral energy distribution fitting to 14-band photometry, including data at three wavelengths that tightly bracket the Balmer and 4000A breaks of the protocluster galaxies. We find that two-thirds of the protocluster galaxies, which lie between several compact groups, are indistinguishable from field galaxies. The other third, which reside within the groups, differ significant…
We analyze central surface brightness mu_0, nuclear and global colors of intermediate redshift disk galaxies. On an apparent-diameter limited sample of 398 galaxies from ACS/HST Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey North (GOODS-N), we find 131 galaxies with bulges and 214 without. Up to z ~ 0.8, blue, star-forming nuclei are found in galaxies with low mu_0 only; all high-mu_0 nuclei show red, passive colors, so that nuclear and global (U - B) colors strongly correlate with central surface brightness, as found in the local Universe. At 0.8 < z < 1.3, a fraction ~ 27% of the high-surface brig…
In a galaxy cluster, the evolution of spiral galaxies depends on their cluster environment. Ram pressure due to the rapid motion of a spiral galaxy within the hot intracluster medium removes the galaxy's interstellar medium from the outer disk. Once the gas has left the disk, star formation stops. The passive evolution of the stellar populations should be detectable in optical spectroscopy and multi-wavelength photometry. The goal of our study is to recover the stripping age of the Virgo spiral galaxy NGC 4388, i.e. the time elapsed since the halt of star formation in the outer galactic disk u…
We present rest-frame far-infrared (FIR) and optical size measurements of AGN hosts and star-forming galaxies in the COSMOS field, enabled by high-resolution ALMA/1 mm (0.1 arcsec - 0.4 arcsec) and HST/F814W imaging (~ 0.1 arcsec). Our sample includes 27 galaxies at z<2.5, classified as infrared-selected AGN (3 sources), X-ray selected AGN (4 sources), and non-AGN star-forming galaxies (20 sources), for which high-resolution Band 6/7 ALMA images are available at 1 mm from our own observing program as well as archival observations. The sizes and SFR surface densities measured from both ALMA/1 m…
Submillimetre galaxies (SMGs) are among the most luminous dusty galaxies in the Universe, but their true nature remains unclear; are SMGs the progenitors of the massive elliptical galaxies we see in the local Universe, or are they just a short-lived phase among more typical star-forming galaxies? To explore this problem further, we investigate the clustering of SMGs identified in the SCUBA-2 Cosmology Legacy Survey. We use a catalogue of submillimetre ($850μ$m) source identifications derived using a combination of radio counterparts and colour/IR selection to analyse a sample of 914 SMGs in th…
We study the non-linear evolution of the acoustic 'Resonant Drag Instability' (RDI) using numerical simulations. The acoustic RDI is excited in a dust-gas mixture when dust grains stream through gas, interacting with sound waves to cause a linear instability. We study this process in a periodic box by accelerating neutral dust with an external driving force. The instability grows as predicted by linear theory, eventually breaking into turbulence and saturating. As in linear theory, the non-linear behavior is characterized by three regimes - high, intermediate, and low wavenumbers - the boundar…
The Hubble morphological sequence from early to late galaxies corresponds to an increasing rate of specific star formation. The Hubble sequence also follows a banana-shaped correlation between 24 and 70 micron luminosities, both normalized with the K-band luminosity. We show that this correlation is significantly tightened if galaxies with central AGN emission are removed, but the cosmic scatter of elliptical galaxies in both 24 and 70 micron luminosities remains significant along the correlation. We find that the 24 micron variation among ellipticals correlates with stellar metallicity, refle…
S0 galaxies are often thought to be passively evolved from spirals after star formation is quenched. To explore what is occurring in S0s, we present a multi-wavelength study of NGC5866--an isolated nearby edge-on S0. This study shows strong evidence for dynamic activities in the interstellar medium, which are most likely driven by supernova explosions in the galactic disk and bulge. We utilize Chandra, HST, and Spitzer data as well as ground-based observations to characterize the content, structure, and physical state of the medium and its interplay with stars in NGC5866. A cold gas disk is de…
With the aim of quantifying the contribution of the environment on the evolution of galaxies at z=0 we have used the DR7 catalogue of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) to reconstruct the 3-D distribution of 4132 galaxies in 420 square degrees of the Coma supercluster, containing two rich clusters (Coma and A1367), several groups, and many filamentary structures belonging to the "Great Wall", at the approximate distance of 100 Mpc. At this distance the galaxy census is complete to Mi=-17.5 mag, i.e. approx 4 mag fainter than M*. The morphological classification of galaxies into early- (ellipt…
