In order to characterise non-equilibrium growth processes, we study the behaviour of global quantities that depend in a non-trivial way on two different times. We discuss the dynamical scaling forms of global correlation and response functions and show that the scaling behaviour of the global response can depend on how the system is perturbed. On the one hand we derive exact expressions for systems characterised by linear Langevin equations (as for example the Edwards-Wilkinson and the noisy Mullins-Herring equations), on the other hand we discuss the influence of non-linearities on the scaling behaviour of global quantities by integrating numerically the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation. We also discuss global fluctuation-dissipation ratios and how to use them for the characterisation of non-equilibrium growth processes.
Currently, there is no systematic way to describe a quantum process with memory solely in terms of experimentally accessible quantities. However, recent technological advances mean we have control over systems at scales where memory effects are non-negligible. The lack of such an operational description has hindered advances in understanding physical, chemical and biological processes, where often unjustified theoretical assumptions are made to render a dynamical description tractable. This has led to theories plagued with unphysical results and no consensus on what a quantum Markov (memoryles…
Growth processes and interface fluctuations can be studied through the properties of global quantities. We here discuss a global quantity that not only captures better the roughness of an interface than the widely studied surface width, but that is also directly conjugate to an experimentally accessible parameter, thereby allowing us to study in a consistent way the global response of the system to a global change of external conditions. Exploiting the full analyticity of the linear Edwards-Wilkinson and Mullins-Herring equations, we study in detail various two-time functions related to that q…
We present comprehensive numerical results for domain growth in the two-dimensional {\it Random Bond Ising Model} (RBIM) with nonconserved Glauber kinetics. We characterize the evolution via the {\it domain growth law}, and two-time quantities like the {\it autocorrelation function} and {\it autoresponse function}. Our results clearly establish that the growth law shows a crossover from a pre-asymptotic regime with "power-law growth with a disorder-dependent exponent" to an asymptotic regime with "logarithmic growth". We compare this behavior with previous results on one-dimensional disordered…
In this work we probe the operator growth for systems with Lie symmetry using tools from quantum information. Namely, we investigate the Krylov complexity, entanglement negativity, von Neumann entropy and capacity of entanglement for systems with SU(1,1) and SU(2) symmetry. Our main tools are two-mode coherent states, whose properties allow us to study the operator growth and its entanglement structure for any system in a discrete series representation of the groups under consideration. Our results verify that the quantities of interest exhibit certain universal features in agreement with the …
Cooling and heating faster a system is a crucial problem in science, technology and industry. Indeed, choosing the best thermal protocol to reach a desired temperature or energy is not a trivial task. Noticeably, we find that the phase transitions may speed up thermalization in systems where there are no conserved quantities. In particular, we show that the slow growth of magnetic domains shortens the overall time that the system takes to reach a final desired state. To prove that statement, we use intensive numerical simulations of a prototypical many-body system, namely the 2D Ising model.
We calculate exponential growth constants describing the asymptotic behavior of several quantities enumerating classes of orientations of arrow variables on the bonds of several types of directed lattice strip graphs $G$ of finite width and arbitrarily great length, in the infinite-length limit, denoted {G}. Specifically, we calculate the exponential growth constants for (i) acyclic orientations, $α(\{G\})$, (ii) acyclic orientations with a single source vertex, $α_0(\{G\})$, and (iii) totally cyclic orientations, $β(\{G\})$. We consider several lattices, including square (sq), triangular (tri…
Polymers consisting of more than one type of monomer, known as copolymers, are vital to both living and synthetic systems. Copolymerisation has been studied theoretically in a number of contexts, often by considering a Markov process in which monomers are added or removed from the growing tip of a long copolymer. To date, the analysis of the most general models of this class has necessitated simulation. We present a general method for analysing such processes without resorting to simulation. Our method can be applied to models with an arbitrary network of sub-steps prior to addition or removal…
We use large-scale Monte Carlo simulations to obtain comprehensive results for domain growth and aging in the random field XY model in dimensions $d=2,3$. After a deep quench from the paramagnetic phase, the system orders locally via annihilation of topological defects, i.e., vortices and anti-vortices. The evolution morphology of the system is characterized by the correlation function and the structure factor of the magnetization field. We find that these quantities obey dynamical scaling, and their scaling function is independent of the disorder strength $Δ$. However, the scaling form of the…
Rényi entropies are conceptually valuable and experimentally relevant generalisations of the celebrated von Neumann entanglement entropy. After a quantum quench in a clean quantum many-body system they generically display a universal linear growth in time followed by saturation. While a finite subsystem is essentially at local equilibrium when the entanglement saturates, it is genuinely out-of-equilibrium in the growth phase. In particular, the slope of the growth carries vital information on the nature of the system's dynamics, and its characterisation is a key objective of current research. …
We consider quantum stochastic processes and discuss a level 2.5 large deviation formalism providing an explicit and complete characterisation of fluctuations of time-averaged quantities, in the large-time limit. We analyse two classes of quantum stochastic dynamics, within this framework. The first class consists of the quantum jump trajectories related to photon detection; the second is quantum state diffusion related to homodyne detection. For both processes, we present the level 2.5 functional starting from the corresponding quantum stochastic Schrödinger equation and we discuss connection…
We comprehensively study non-equilibrium relaxation and aging processes in the two-dimensional random-site Ising model through numerical simulations. We discuss the dynamical correlation length as well as scaling functions of various two-times quantities as a function of temperature and of the degree of dilution. For already modest values of the dynamical correlation length $L$ deviations from a simple algebraic growth, $L(t) \sim t^{1/z}$, are observed. When taking this non-algebraic growth properly into account, a simple aging behavior of the autocorrelation function is found. This is in sta…
We study numerically the ordering kinetics in a two-dimensional Ising model with random coupling where the fraction of antiferromagnetic links $a$ can be gradually tuned. We show that, upon increasing such fraction, the behavior changes in a radical way. Small $a$ does not prevent the system from a complete ordering, but this occurs in an extremely (logarithmically) slow manner. However, larger values of this parameter destroy complete ordering, due to frustration, and the evolution is comparatively faster (algebraic). Our study shows a precise correspondence between the kind of developing ord…
