The electronic and magnetic properties of many strongly-correlated systems are controlled by a limited number of states, located near the Fermi level and well isolated from the rest of the spectrum. This opens a formal way for combining the methods of first-principles electronic structure calculations, based on the density-functional theory (DFT), with many-body models, formulated in the restricted Hilbert space of states close to the Fermi level. The core of this project is the so-called "realistic modeling" or the construction of the model many-body Hamiltonians entirely from the first principles. Such a construction should be able to go beyond the conventional local-density approximation (LDA), which typically supplements the density-functional theory, and incorporate the physics of Coulomb correlations. It should also provide a transparent physical picture for the low-energy properties of strongly correlated materials. In this review article, we will outline the basic ideas of such a realistic modeling. The entire procedure will be illustrated on the series of examples, including the distorted transition-metal perovskite oxides, the compounds with the inversion symmetry breaking caused by the defects, and the alkali hyperoxide KO2, which can be regarded as an analog of strongly-correlated systems where the localized electrons reside on the molecular orbitals of the O2- dimer. In order to illustrate abilities of the realistic modeling, we will also consider solutions of the obtained low-energy models for a number of systems, and argue that it can be used as a powerful tool for the exploration and understanding of properties of strongly correlated materials.
The single-molecule magnet $\mathrm{[Ni(hmp)(MeOH)Cl]_4}$ is studied using both density functional theory (DFT) and the DFT+U method, and the results are compared. By incorporating a Hubbard-U like term for both the nickel and oxygen atoms, the experimentally determined ground state is successfully obtained, and the exchange coupling constants derived from the DFT+U calculation agree with experiment very well. The results show that the nickel 3d and oxygen 2p electrons in this molecule are strongly correlated, and thus the inclusion of on-site Coulomb energies is crucial to obtaining the corre…
Predicting the compositional phase stability of strongly correlated electron materials is an outstanding challenge in condensed matter physics, requiring precise computations of total energies. In this work, we employ the density functional theory plus dynamical mean-field theory (DFT+DMFT) formalism to address local correlations due to transition metal d electrons on compositional phase stability in the prototype rechargeable battery cathode material LixCoO2, and detailed comparisons are made with the simpler DFT+U approach (i.e. the Hartree-Fock solution of the DMFT impurity problem). Local …
I present a critical overview of so-called "{\it ab initio}" DFT (density fuctional theory) based calculation schemes for the description of the electronic structure, energy spectrum, and optical response for strongly correlated 3$d$ oxides, in particular, crystal-field and charge transfer transitions as compared with an "old"\, cluster model that does generalize crystal-field and ligand-field theory. As a most instructive illustration of validity of numerous calculation techniques I address the prototypical 3$d$ insulator NiO predicted to be a metal in frames of a standard LDA (local density …
Predicting the compositional phase stability of strongly correlated electron materials is an outstanding challenge in condensed matter physics. In this work, we employ the DFT+U formalism to address the effects of local correlations due to transition metal d electrons on compositional phase stability in the prototype phase stable and separating materials LixCoO2 and olivine LixFePO4, respectively. We exploit a new spectral decomposition of the DFT+U total energy, revealing the distinct roles of the filling and ordering of the d orbital correlated subspace. The on-site interaction U drives both…

The sensitivity of Density Functional Theory plus Dynamical Mean Field Theory calculations to different constructions of the correlated orbitals is investigated via a detailed comparison of results obtained for the quantum material NdNiO$_2$ using different Wannier and projector methods to define the correlation problem. Using the same interaction parameters we find that the different methods produce different results for the orbital and band basis mass enhancements and for the orbital occupancies, with differing implications regarding the importance of multiorbital effects and charge transfer…
Many-body theories such as dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) have enabled the description of the electron exchange-correlation interactions that are missing in current density functional theory (DFT) calculations. However, there has been relatively little focus on the wavefunctions from these theories. We present the methodology of the newly developed Elk-TRIQS interface and how to calculate the DFT with DMFT (DFT+DMFT) wavefunctions, which can be used to calculate DFT+DMFT wavefunction dependent quantities. We illustrate this by calculating the electron localized function (ELF) in monolayer …
Dynamical Mean Field Theory (DMFT) is a successful method to compute the electronic structure of strongly correlated materials, especially when it is combined with density functional theory (DFT). Here, we present an open-source computational package (and a library) combining DMFT with various DFT codes interfaced through the Wannier90 package. The correlated subspace is expanded as a linear combination of Wannier functions introduced in the DMFT approach as local orbitals. In particular, we provide a library mode for computing the DMFT density matrix. This library can be linked and then inter…
We introduce natural atomic orbitals as the local projector to define the correlated subspace for DFT + DMFT (density functional theory plus dynamical mean-field theory) calculation. The natural atomic orbitals are found to be stably constructed against the number and the radius of basis orbitals. It can also be self-consistently updated inside the DFT+DMFT loop. The spatial localization, electron occupation and the degree of correlation are investigated and compared with other conventional techniques. As a `natural' choice to describe the electron numbers, adopting natural atomic orbitals has…
Phonons are fundamentally important for many materials properties, including thermal and electronic transport, superconductivity, and structural stability. Here, we describe a method to compute phonons in correlated materials using state-of-the-art DFT+DMFT calculations. Our approach combines a robust DFT+DMFT implementation to calculate forces with the direct method for lattice dynamics using nondiagonal supercells. The use of nondiagonal instead of diagonal supercells drastically reduces the computational expense associated with the DFT+DMFT calculations. We benchmark the method for typical …
We present the TRIQS/DFTTools package, an application based on the TRIQS library that connects this toolbox to realistic materials calculations based on density functional theory (DFT). In particular, TRIQS/DFTTools together with TRIQS allows an efficient implementation of DFT plus dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) calculations. It supplies tools and methods to construct Wannier functions and to perform the DMFT self-consistency cycle in this basis set. Post-processing tools, such as band-structure plotting or the calculation of transport properties are also implemented. The package comes wit…
We present a comparative electronic structure study using DFT and various beyond-DFT (DFT+$U$, $G_0W_0$, DFT+DMFT) methods for ferromagnetic Iron (Fe) to find better approach for describing the spectral properties of correlated magnetic system. The computed value of $U$ ($W$) is $\sim$5.4 ($\sim$0.8) eV. The calculated spectra of all methods are providing good agreement with experimental spectra (ES) for peaks' positions. But, the proper line shape is only found from DFT+DMFT with correct estimation of incoherent states, which depends on $J$ and form of local Coulomb interactions. The estimati…
Adsorbed transition metal atoms can have partially filled $d$- or $f$-shells due to strong on-site Coulomb interaction. Capturing all effects originating from electron correlation in such strongly correlated systems is a challenge for electronic structure methods. It requires a sufficiently accurate description of the atomistic structure (in particular bond distances and angles), which is usually obtained from Kohn-Sham density functional theory (DFT), which due to the approximate nature of the exchange-correlation functional may provide an unreliable description of strongly correlated systems…
We implemented the derivative of the free energy functional with respect to the atom displacements, so called force, within the combination of Density Functional Theory and the Embedded Dynamical Mean Field Theory. We show that in combination with the numerically exact quantum Monte Carlo (MC) impurity solver, the MC noise cancels to a great extend, so that the method can be used very efficiently for structural optimization of correlated electron materials. As an application of the method, we show how strengthening of the fluctuating moment in FeSe superconductor leads to a substantial increas…
Various methods going beyond density-functional theory (DFT), such as DFT+U, hybrid functionals, meta-GGAs, GW, and DFT-embedded dynamical mean field theory (eDMFT), have been developed to describe the electronic structure of correlated materials, but it is unclear how accurate these methods can be expected to be when applied to a given strongly correlated solid. It is thus of pressing interest to compare their accuracy as they apply to different categories of materials. Here, we introduce a novel paradigm in which a chosen set of beyond-DFT methods is systematically and uniformly tested on a …
We propose a refined scheme of deriving an effective low-energy Hamiltonian for materials with strong electronic Coulomb correlations beyond density functional theory (DFT). By tracing out the electronic states away from the target degrees of freedom in a controlled way by a perturbative scheme we construct an effective model for a restricted low-energy target space incorporating the effects of high-energy degrees of freedom in an effective manner. The resulting effective model can afterwards be solved by accurate many-body solvers. We improve this "multi-scale ab initio scheme for correlated …
We present a generalized definition of subspace occupancy matrices in ab initio methods for strongly correlated materials, such as DFT+U and DFT+DMFT, which is appropriate to the case of nonorthogonal projector functions. By enforcing the tensorial consistency of all matrix operations, we are led to a subspace projection operator for which the occupancy matrix is tensorial and accumulates only contributions which are local to the correlated subspace at hand. For DFT+U in particular, the resulting contributions to the potential and ionic forces are automatically Hermitian, without resort to sym…
A self-consistent calculation scheme for correlated electron systems is created based on the density-functional theory (DFT). Our scheme is a multi-reference DFT (MR-DFT) calculation in which the electron charge density is reproduced by an auxiliary interacting Fermion system. A short-range Hubbard-type interaction is introduced by a rigorous manner with a residual term for the exchange-correlation energy. The Hubbard term is determined uniquely by referencing the density fluctuation at a selected localized orbital. This strategy to obtain an extension of the Kohn-Sham scheme provides a self-c…
A density functional theory (DFT) of lattice fermion models is presented, which uses the single-particle density matrix gamma_{ij} as basic variable. A simple, explicit approximation to the interaction-energy functional W[gamma] of the Hubbard model is derived from exact dimer results, scaling properties of W[gamma] and known limits. Systematic tests on the one-dimensional chain show a remarkable agreement with theBethe-Ansatz exact solution for all interaction regimes and band fillings. New results are obtained for the ground-state energyand charge-excitation gap in two dimensions. A successf…
In this article, we propose an energy functional at the level of DFT+U+V that allows us to compute self-consistently the values of the on-site interaction, Hubbard U and Hund J, as well as the intersite interaction V. This functional extends the previously proposed ACBN0 functional [Phys. Rev. X 5, 011006 (2015)] including both on-site and intersite interactions. We show that this ab initio self-consistent functional yields improved electronic properties for a wide range of materials, ranging from $sp$ materials to strongly-correlated materials. This functional can also be seen as an alternati…
The combination of density functional theory with dynamical mean-field theory (DFT+DMFT) has become a powerful first-principles approach to tackle strongly correlated materials in condensed matter physics. The wide use of this approach relies on robust and easy-to-use implementations, and its implementation in various numerical frameworks will increase its applicability on the one hand and help crosscheck the validity of the obtained results on the other. In the work, we develop a formalism within the linear combination of numerical atomic orbital (NAO) basis set framework, which allows for me…
An implementation of full self-consistency over the electronic density in the DFT+DMFT framework on the basis of a plane wave-projector augmented wave (PAW) DFT code is presented. It allows for an accurate calculation of the total energy in DFT+DMFT within a plane wave approach. In contrast to frameworks based on the maximally localized Wannier function, the method is easily applied to f electron systems, such as cerium, cerium oxide (Ce2O3) and plutonium oxide (Pu2O3). In order to have a correct and physical calculation of the energy terms, we find that the calculation of the self-consistent …
The aim of this review article is to assess the descriptive capabilities of the Hubbard-rooted LDA+U method and to clarify the conditions under which it can be expected to be most predictive. The paper illustrates the theoretical foundation of LDA+U and prototypical applications to the study of correlated materials, discusses the most relevant approximations used in its formulation, and makes a comparison with other approaches also developed for similar purposes. Open "issues" of the method are also discussed, including the calculation of the electronic couplings (the Hubbard U), the precise e…
The stationary functional of the all-electron density functional plus dynamical mean field theory (DFT+DMFT) formalism to perform free energy calculations and structural relaxations is implemented for the first time. Here, the first order error in the density leads to a much smaller, second order error in the free energy. The method is applied to several well known correlated materials; metallic SrVO$_3$, Mott insulating FeO, and elemental Cerium, to show that it predicts the lattice constants with very high accuracy. In Cerium, we show that our method predicts the iso-structural transition be…
The realistic description of correlated electron systems has taken an important step forward a few years ago as the combination of density functional methods and the dynamical mean-field theory was conceived. This framework allows access to both high and low energy physics and is capable of the description of the specific physics of strongly correlated materials, like the Mott metal-insulator transition. A very important step in the procedure is the interface between the band structure method and the dynamical mean-field theory and its impurity solver. We present a general interface between a …
We shed light on the interplay between structure and many-body effects relevant for itinerant ferromagnetism in LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ heterostructures. The realistic correlated electronic structure is studied by means of the (spin-polarized) charge self-consistent combination of density functional theory (DFT) with dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) beyond the realm of static correlation effects. Though many-body behavior is also active in the defect-free interface, a ferromagnetic instability occurs only with oxygen vacancies. A minimal Ti two-orbital $e_g$-$t_{2g}$ description for the correlat…
The search for two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials has attracted a great deal of attention because of the experimental synthesis of 2D CrI$_3$, which has a measured Curie temperature of 45 K. Often times, these monolayers have a higher degree of electron correlation and require more sophisticated methods beyond density functional theory (DFT). Diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) is a correlated electronic structure method that has been demonstrated successful for calculating the electronic and magnetic properties of a wide variety of 2D and bulk systems, since it has a weaker dependence on the Hub…
Electronic structures of FeSi and Fe$_{1.02}$Si$_{0.98}$ under pressure (achieved through volume compression) have been investigated by using DFT+DMFT and KKR-CPA methods, respectively. The widening of band-gap with increasing pressure suggests that the experimentally observed insulator to metal transition temperature should shift towards the higher temperature for FeSi. KKR-CPA calculations have shown the presence of impurity states in the gapped region which predicts the half-metallic nature. The closure of gap (in one spin channel) with pressure increment appears to be responsible for exper…
We study the lattice dynamics of iron superconductor FeSe, and address the fundamental question of how important is proper description of fluctuating magnetic moments in metallic systems for phonon dispersion and phonon density of states. We show that Density Functional Theory (DFT)+ embedded Dynamical Mean-Field Theory (eDMFT) functional approach, which truly captures the fluctuating local moments, largely eliminates the deficiency of DFT for description of lattice dynamics in correlated metallic systems, and predicts phonon dispersion and phonon density of states in very good agreement with …
Stable organic radicals integrated into molecular junctions represent a practical realization of the single-orbital Anderson impurity model. Motivated by recent experiments for perchlorotriphenylmethyl (PTM) molecules contacted to gold electrodes, we develop a method that combines density functional theory (DFT), quantum transport theory, numerical renormalization group (NRG) calculations and renormalized super-perturbation theory (rSPT) to compute both equilibrium and non-equilibrium properties of strongly correlated nanoscale systems at low temperatures effectively from first principles. We …
We have integrated density functional theory (DFT) into quantitative convergent-beam electron diffraction (QCBED) to create a synergy between experiment and theory called QCBED-DFT. This synergy resides entirely in the electron density which, in real materials, gives rise to the experimental CBED patterns used by QCBED-DFT to refine DFT model parameters. We used it to measure the Hubbard energy, U, for two strongly correlated electron systems, NiO and CeB6 (UNiO = 7.4 +/- 0.6 eV and UCeB6 = 3.0 +/- 0.6 eV), and the boron position parameter, x, for CeB6 (x = 0.1992 +/- 0.0003). In verifying our…
We implemented various DFT+U schemes, including the ACBN0 self-consistent density-functional version of the DFT+U method [Phys. Rev. X 5, 011006 (2015)] within the massively parallel real-space time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) code Octopus. We further extended the method to the case of the calculation of response functions with real-time TDDFT+U and to the description of non-collinear spin systems. The implementation is tested by investigating the ground-state and optical properties of various transition metal oxides, bulk topological insulators, and molecules. Our results are …
The single-impurity Anderson model is studied within the i-DFT framework, a recently proposed extension of density functional theory (DFT) for the description of electron transport in the steady state. i-DFT is designed to give both the steady current and density at the impurity, and it requires the knowledge of the exchange-correlation (xc) bias and on-site potential (gate). In this work we construct an approximation for both quantities which is accurate in a wide range of temperatures, gates and biases, thus providing a simple and unifying framework to calculate the differential conductance …
We examine the ballistic conduction through Au-NiMnSb-Au heterostructures consisting of up to four units of NiMnSb in the scattering region. We investigate the dependence of the transmission function computed within the local spin density approximation (LSDA) of the density functional theory (DFT) on the number of half-metallic units in the scattering region. For a single NiMnSb unit the transmission function displays a spin polarization of around 50 % in a window of 1 eV centered around the Fermi level. By increasing the number of layers an almost complete spin polarization of the transmissio…
Interpolating the exchange-correlation energy along the density-fixed adiabatic connection of density functional theory is a promising way to build approximations that are not biased towards the weakly correlated regime. These interpolations can be done at the global (integrated over all spaces) or at the local level, using energy densities. Many features of the relevant energy densities as well as several different ways to construct these interpolations, including comparisons between global and local variants, are investigated here for the analytically solvable Hooke's atom series, which allo…
Normally, understanding the temperature dependent transport properties of strongly correlated electron systems remains challenging task due to complex electronic structure and its variations (around E$_{F}$) with temperature. Here, we report the applicability of DFT+U in explaining thermopower ($α$) and electrical conductivity ($σ$) in high temperature region. We have measured temperature dependent $α$ and $σ$ in the 300-600 K range. The non-monotonic temperature dependent behavior of $α$ and metallic behavior of $σ$ were observed. The value of $α$ at 300 K was $\sim$15.80 $μ$V/K and it decrea…
We implemented combination of DMFT and $GW$ in its fully self-consistent way, one shot $GW$ approximation, and quasiparticle self-consistent scheme, and studied how well these combined methods perform on H$_2$ molecule as compared to more established methods such as LDA+DMFT. We found that most flavors of $GW$+DMFT break down in strongly correlated regime due to causality violation. Among $GW$+DMFT methods, only the self-consistent quasiparticle $GW$+DMFT with static double-counting, and a new method with causal double-counting, correctly recover the atomic limit at large H-atom separation. Wh…
Monolayer MnO$_2$ is one of the few predicted two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnets that has been experimentally synthesized and is commercially available. The Mermin-Wagner theorem states that magnetic order in a 2D material cannot persist unless magnetic anisotropy (MA) is present and perpendicular to the plane, which permits a finite critical temperature. Previous computational studies have predicted the magnetic ordering and Curie temperature of 2D MnO$_2$ with DFT+U (Density Funtional Theory + Hubbard U correction), with the results having a strong dependence on the Hubbard U parameter. Diffu…
Recent density functional theory (DFT) calculations for KFe2As2 have shown to be insufficient to satisfactorily describe angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) measurements as well as observed de Haas van Alphen (dHvA) frequencies. In the present work, we extend DFT calculations based on the full-potential linear augmented plane-wave method by dynamical mean field theory (DFT+DMFT) to include correlation effects beyond the local density approximation. Our results indicate that KFe2As2 is a moderately correlated metal with a mass renormalization factor of the Fe 3d orbitals between 1.6 and 2.7. A…
Titanium dioxide (TiO$_2$) presents a long-standing challenge for approximate Kohn-Sham density-functional theory (KS-DFT), as well as to its Hubbard-corrected extension, DFT+$U$. We find that a previously proposed extension of first-principles DFT+$U$ to incorporate a Hund's $J$ correction, termed DFT+$U$+$J$, in combination with parameters calculated using a recently proposed linear-response theory, predicts fundamental band-gaps accurate to well within the experimental uncertainty in rutile and anatase TiO$_2$. Our approach builds upon established findings that Hubbard correction to both ti…
Density-functional theory is widely used to predict the physical properties of materials. However, it usually fails for strongly correlated materials. A popular solution is to use the Hubbard corrections to treat strongly correlated electronic states. Unfortunately, the exact values of the Hubbard $U$ and $J$ parameters are initially unknown, and they can vary from one material to another. In this semi-empirical study, we explore the $U$ and $J$ parameter space of a group of iron-based compounds to simultaneously improve the prediction of physical properties (volume, magnetic moment, and bandg…

Within the framework of many-body perturbation theory (MBPT) integrated with density functional theory (DFT), a novel defect-subspace projection GW method, the so-called p-GW, is proposed. By avoiding the periodic defect interference through open boundary self-energies, we show that the p-GW can efficiently and accurately describe quasi-particle correlated defect levels in two-dimensional (2D) monolayer MoS$_2$. By comparing two different defect states originating from sulfur vacancy and adatom to existing theoretical and experimental works, we show that our GW correction to the DFT defect lev…
In this paper we use density functional theory combined with dynamical mean-field theory (DFT+DMFT) to study interface effects between thin films of the correlated metal CaVO$_3$ and the two typical substrate materials SrTiO$_3$ and LaAlO$_3$. We find that the CaVO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interface has only a marginal influence on the CaVO$_3$ thin film, with the dominant effect being the (bulklike) epitaxial strain imposed by the large lattice mismatch, rendering the CaVO$_3$ film insulating due to the enhanced orbital polarization related to the strong level splitting between the t$_{\mathrm{2g}}$ orb…
We propose a hybrid approach which employs the dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) self-energy for the correlated, typically rather localized orbitals and a conventional density functional theory (DFT) exchange-correlation potential for the less correlated, less localized orbitals. We implement this self-energy (plus charge density) self-consistent DFT+DMFT scheme in a basis of maximally localized Wannier orbitals using Wien2K, wien2wannier, and the DMFT impurity solver w2dynamics. As a testbed material we apply the method to SrVO$_3$ and report a significant improvement as compared to previous…
