We study supersymmetry of a self-isospectral one-gap Poschl-Teller system in the light of a mirror symmetry that is based on spatial and shift reflections. The revealed exotic, partially broken nonlinear supersymmetry admits seven alternatives for a grading operator. One of its local, first order supercharges may be identified as a Hamiltonian of an associated one-gap, non-periodic Bogoliubov-de Gennes system. The latter possesses a nonlinear supersymmetric structure, in which any of the three non-local generators of a Clifford algebra may be chosen as the grading operator. We find that the supersymmetry generators for the both systems are the Darboux-dressed integrals of a free spin-1/2 particle in the Schrodinger picture, or of a free massive Dirac particle. Nonlocal Foldy- Wouthuysen transformations are shown to be involved in the supersymmetric structure.
We develop a systematic approach to construct novel completely solvable rational potentials. Second-order supersymmetric quantum mechanics dictates the latter to be isospectral to some well-studied quantum systems. $\cal PT$ symmetry may facilitate reconciling our approach to the requirement that the rationally-extended potentials be singularity free. Some examples are shown.
We study a planar model of a non-relativistic electron in periodic magnetic and electric fields that produce a 1D crystal for two spin components separated by a half-period spacing. We fit the fields to create a self-isospectral pair of finite-gap associated Lame equations shifted for a half-period, and show that the system obtained is characterized by a new type of supersymmetry. It is a special nonlinear supersymmetry generated by three commuting integrals of motion, related to the parity-odd operator of the associated Lax pair, that coherently reflects the band structure and all its peculia…
We show that an n-gap periodic quantum system with parity-even smooth potential admits $2^n-1$ isospectral super-extensions. Each is described by a tri-supersymmetry that originates from a higher-order differential operator of the Lax pair and two-term nonsingular decompositions of it; its local part corresponds to a spontaneously partially broken centrally extended nonlinear N=4 supersymmetry. We conjecture that any finite-gap system having antiperiodic singlet states admits a self-isospectral tri-supersymmetric extension with the partner potential to be the original one translated for a half…
A covariant set of linear differential field equations, describing an N=1 supersymmetric anyon system in (2+1)D, is proposed in terms of Wigner's deformation of the bosonic Heisenberg algebra. The non-relativistic ``Jackiw-Nair'' limit extracts the ordinary bosonic and fermionic degrees of freedom from the Heisenberg-Wigner algebra. It yields first-order, non-relativistic wave equations for a spinning particle on the non-commutative plane that admits a Galilean exotic planar N=1 supersymmetry.
We construct a fermion system in a multi-kink-antikink soliton background, and present in an explicit form all its trapped configurations (bound state solutions) as well as scattering states. This is achieved by exploiting an exotic N=4 centrally extended nonlinear supersymmetry of completely isospectral pairs of reflectionless Schrodinger systems with potentials to be n-soliton solutions for the Korteweg-de Vries equation. The obtained reflectionless Dirac system with a position-dependent mass is shown to possess its own exotic nonlinear supersymmetry associated with the matrix Lax-Novikov op…
Peculiar properties of many classical and quantum systems can be related to, or derived from those of a free particle. In this way we explain the appearance and peculiarities of the exotic nonlinear Poincaré supersymmetry in reflectionless and finite-gap quantum systems related to the Korteweg-de Vries equation. The same approach is used to explain the origin and the nature of nonlinear symmetries in the perfectly invisible $\mathcal{PT}$-regularized conformal and superconformal mechanics systems.
By applying Darboux-Crum transformations to the quantum one-gap Lame system, we introduce an arbitrary countable number of bound states into forbidden bands. The perturbed potentials are reflectionless and contain two types of soliton defects in the periodic background. The bound states with finite number of nodes are supported in the lower forbidden band by the periodicity defects of the potential well type, while the pulse type bound states in the gap have infinite number of nodes and are trapped by defects of the compression modulations nature. We investigate the exotic nonlinear N=4 supers…
We study the supersymmetry projection rules on exotic branes in type II string theories and M-theory. They justify the validity of the exotic duality between standard branes and exotic branes of codimension two. By virtue of the supersymmetry projection rules on various branes, we can consider a system that involves multiple non-parallel exotic branes in the nongeometric background.
Some time ago, Thies et al. showed that the Gross-Neveu model with a bare mass term possesses a kink-antikink crystalline phase. Corresponding self-consistent solutions, known earlier in polymer physics, are described by a self-isospectral pair of one-gap periodic Lame potentials with a Darboux displacement depending on the bare mass. We study an unusual supersymmetry of such a second order Lame system, and show that the associated first order Bogoliubov-de Gennes Hamiltonian possesses the own nonlinear supersymmetry. The Witten index is ascertained to be zero for both of the related exotic su…
We consider the two most general families of the (1+1)D Dirac systems with transparent scalar potentials, and two related families of the paired reflectionless Schrodinger operators. The ordinary N=2 supersymmetry for such Schrodinger pairs is enlarged up to an exotic N=4 nonlinear centrally extended supersymmetric structure, which involves two bosonic integrals composed from the Lax-Novikov operators for the stationary Korteweg-de Vries hierarchy. Each associated single Dirac system displays a proper N=2 nonlinear supersymmetry with a non-standard grading operator. One of the two families of …
We analyse various two dimensional theories arising from compactification of type II and heterotic string theory on asymmetric orbifolds. We find extra supersymmetry generators arising from twisted sectors, giving rise to exotic supersymmetry algebras. Among others we discover new cases with a large number of supercharges, such as $\mathcal{N}=(20,8)$, $\mathcal{N}=(24,8)$, $\mathcal{N}=(32,0)$, $\mathcal{N}=(24,24)$ and $\mathcal{N}=(48,0)$.
Classical and quantum symmetries of super $p$-branes preserving exotic 3/4 fraction of $N=1 D=4$ global supersymmetry are studied. Classical realization of the algebra of global and world-volume symmetries is constructed and its quantum generalizations are analyzed. Established is that the status of the conformal supersymmetry $OSp(1|8)$ as a proper quantum symmetry of brane depends both on the choice of its vacuum state and the associated ordering of $\hat{\cal Q}$ and $\hat{\cal P}$ operators.
We investigate a special class of the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric quantum models being perfectly invisible zero-gap systems with a unique bound state at the very edge of continuous spectrum of scattering states. The family includes the $\mathcal{PT}$-regularized two particle Calogero systems (conformal quantum mechanics models of de Alfaro-Fubini-Furlan) and their rational extensions whose potentials satisfy equations of the KdV hierarchy and exhibit, particularly, a behaviour typical for extreme waves. We show that the two simplest Hamiltonians from the Calogero subfamily determine the fluctuati…
We investigate the possibility to construct extended parafermionic conformal algebras whose generating current has spin $1+\frac{1}{K}$, generalizing the superconformal (spin 3/2) and the Fateev Zamolodchikov (spin 4/3) algebras. Models invariant under such algebras would possess $Z_K$ exotic supersymmetries satisfying (supercharge)$^K$ = (momentum). However, we show that for $K=4$ this new algebra allows only for models at $c=1$, for $K=5$ it is a trivial rephrasing of the ordinary $Z_5$ parafermionic model, for $K=6,7$ (and, requiring unitarity, for all larger $K$) such algebras do not exist…
The general solutions in the models of closed and open superstring and super p-branes with exotic fractions of the N=1 supersymmetry are considered and the spontaneously broken character of the $OSp(1,2M)$ symmetry of the models is established. It is shown that extending these models by Wess-Zumino terms generates the Dirichlet boundary conditions for superstring and super p-branes. Using the generalized Wess-Zumino terms new $OSp(1,2M)$ invariant super p-brane and Dp-brane-like actions preserving $\frac{M-1}{M}$ fraction of supersymmetry are proposed. For M=32 these models suggest new superbr…
We suggest SU(5)$'$ in the hidden sector toward a possible gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking scenario for removing the SUSY flavor problem, with an example constructed in $\Z_{12-I}$ with three families. The example we present has the Pati-Salam type classification of particles in the observable sector and has no exotics at low energy. We point out that six or seven very light pairs of ${\bf 5}'$ and $\bar{\bf 5}'$ out of ten vectorlike $\five'$ and $\fiveb'$ pairs of SU(5)$'$ is achievable, leading to a possibility of an unstable supersymmetry breaking vacuum. The possibility of different…
We study some of the algebraic properties of the non-relativistic monopole. We find that we can construct theories that possess an exotic conserved fermionic charge that squares to the Casimir of the rotation group, yet do not possess an ordinary supersymmetry. This is in contrast to previous known examples with such exotic fermionic charges. We proceed to show that the presence of the exotic fermionic charge in the non-supersymmetric theory can nonetheless be understood using supersymmetric techniques, providing yet another example of the usefulness of supersymmetry in understanding non-super…
Algebra of the constraints of twistor-like p-branes restoring 3/4 fraction of the spontaneously broken D=4 N=1 supersymmetry is studied using the conversion method. Classical and quantum realizations of the BRST charge, unified superalgebra of the global generalized superconformal OSp(1|8) and Virasoro and Weyl symmetries are constructed. It is shown that the quantum Hermitian BRST charge is nilpotent and the quantized OSp(1|8) superalgebra is closed.
The Hamiltonian of the simplest super $p$-brane model preserving 3/4 of the D=4 N=1 supersymmetry in the centrally extended symplectic superspace is derived and its symmetries are described. The constraints of the model are covariantly separated into the first- and the second-class sets and the Dirac brackets (D.B.) are constructed. We show the D.B. noncommutativity of the super $p$-brane coordinates and find the D.B. realization of the $OSp(1|8)$ superalgebra. Established is the coincidence of the D.B. and Poisson bracket realizations of the $OSp(1|8)$ superalgebra on the constraint surface a…
We consider a class of models in which supersymmetry breaking is communicated dominantly via a U'(1) gauge interaction, which also helps solve the μproblem. Such models can emerge naturally in top-down constructions and are a version of split supersymmetry. The spectrum contains heavy sfermions, Higgsinos, exotics, and Z' ~ 10-100 TeV; light gauginos ~ 100-1000 GeV; a light Higgs ~ 140 GeV; and a light singlino. A specific set of U'(1) charges and exotics is analyzed, and we present five benchmark models. Implications for the gluino lifetime, cold dark matter, and the gravitino and neutrino ma…
We study a reflectionless PT-symmetric quantum system described by the pair of complexified Scarf II potentials mutually displaced in the half of their pure imaginary period. Analyzing the rich set of intertwining discrete symmetries of the pair, we find an exotic supersymmetric structure based on three matrix differential operators that encode all the properties of the system, including its reflectionless (finite-gap) nature. The structure we revealed particularly sheds new light on the splitting of the discrete states into two families, related to the bound and resonance states in Hermitian …
We extend Seiberg's qualitative picture of the behavior of supersymmetric QCD to nonsupersymmetric models by adding soft supersymmetry breaking terms. In this way, we recover the standard vacuum of QCD with $N_f$ flavors and $N_c$ colors when $N_f < N_c$. However, for $N_f \geq N_c$, we find new exotic states---new vacua with spontaneously broken baryon number for $N_f = N_c$, and a vacuum state with unbroken chiral symmetry for $N_f > N_c$. These exotic vacua contain massless composite fermions and, in some cases, dynamically generated gauge bosons. In particular Seiberg's electric-magnetic d…
In this thesis some systems with exotic symmetries, which are a peculiarity in 2+1 space-time dimensions, are studied. Coded in the exotic structure, there appear noncommutative coordinates and a phases structure. This kind of systems has attracted attention from different areas of physics independently. Among them, we can mention: theory of ray representations of Lie groups, anyon physics, some condensed matter systems, for instance the quantum Hall effect, planar gauge and gravitation theories, noncommutative field theory, noncommutative geometry, and noncommutative quantum mechanics. We foc…
We show how 1+1-dimensional fermionic symmetry-protected topological states (SPTs, i.e. nontrivial short-range entangled gapped phases of quantum matter whose boundary exhibits 't Hooft anomaly and whose bulk cannot be deformed into a trivial tensor product state under finite-depth local unitary transformations only in the presence of global symmetries), indeed can be unwound to a trivial state by enlarging the Hilbert space via adding extra degrees of freedom and suitably extending the global symmetries. The extended projective global symmetry on the boundary can become supersymmetric in a sp…
We extend the notion of super-Minkowski space-time to include $\mathbb{Z}_2^n$-graded (Majorana) spinor coordinates. Our choice of the grading leads to spinor coordinates that are nilpotent but commute amongst themselves. The mathematical framework we employ is the recently developed category of $\mathbb{Z}_2^n$-manifolds understood as locally ringed spaces. The formalism we present resembles $\mathcal{N}$-extended superspace (in the presence of central charges), but with some subtle differences due to the exotic nature of the grading employed.
The $(4,0)$ theory in six dimensions is an exotic theory of supergravity that has been argued to emerge as the strong coupling limit of theories having $N=8$ supergravity as their low energy effective theory in five spacetime dimensions. It has maximal supersymmetry and is superconformal. Very little is known about this intriguing theory. While the spectrum of fields occurring in its description has been given and their equations of motion in the absence of interactions have been written down, no action principle has been formulated, even in the free case. We extend here previous analyses by w…
Nonlinear supersymmetry is characterized by supercharges to be higher order in bosonic momenta of a system, and thus has a nature of a hidden symmetry. We review some aspects of nonlinear supersymmetry and related to it exotic supersymmetry and nonlinear superconformal symmetry. Examples of reflectionless, finite-gap and perfectly invisible PT-symmetric zero-gap systems, as well as rational deformations of the quantum harmonic oscillator and conformal mechanics, are considered, in which such symmetries are realized.
We consider one loop quantum corrections to soliton mass for the ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric extension of the (1+1)-dimensional scalar field theory with the potential $U(ϕ) = ϕ^2 \cos^2\left(\ln ϕ^2\right)$. First, we compute the one loop quantum soliton mass correction of the bosonic sector. To do that, we regularize implicitly such quantity by subtracting and adding its corresponding tadpole graph contribution, and use the renormalization prescription that the added term vanishes with the corresponding counterterms. As a result we get a finite unambiguous formula for the soliton quantum mass…
We investigate exotic supergravity theories in 6D with maximal (4,0) and (3,1) supersymmetry, which were conjectured by C. Hull to exist and to describe strong coupling limits of ${\cal N}=8$ theories in 5D. These theories involve exotic gauge fields with non-standard Young tableaux representations, subject to (self-)duality constraints. We give novel actions in a 5+1 split of coordinates whose field equations reproduce those of the free bosonic (4,0) and (3,1) theory, respectively, including the (self-)duality relations. Evidence is presented for a master exceptional field theory formulation …
A supersymmetric spin-1/2 particle in the noncommutative plane, subject to an arbitrary magnetic field, is considered, with particular attention paid to the homogeneous case. The system has three different phases, depending on the magnetic field. Due to supersymmetry, the boundary critical phase which separates the sub- and super-critical cases can be viewed as a reduction to the zero-energy eigensubspace. In the sub-critical phase the system is described by the superextension of exotic Newton-Hooke symmetry, combined with the conformal so(2,1) ~ su(1,1) symmetry; the latter is changed into so…
We propose a mechanism that the soft supersymmetry breaking masses can be induced from the dynamical rearrangement of local U(1) symmetry in a five-dimensional model. The U(1) symmetry possesses several extraordinary features. The eigenstates of U(1) do not equal to those of boundary conditions. The U(1) charge of standard model particles does not equal to that of superpartners. A large U(1) charge hierarchy among superpartners and a standard model gauge singlet is necessary in order to obtain the masses of O(1)TeV.
In this letter, we study systematically the general properties of the $B$-extension of any integrable model. In addition to discussing the general properties of Hamiltonians, Hamiltonian structures etc, we also clarify the origin of "exotic" charges in such models. We show that, in such models, there exist at least two sets of non-local conserved charges (and more if $N>1$ supersymmetry is present) and that the "exotic" charges are part of this non-local charge hierarchy. The construction of these non-local charges from the Lax operator is explained.
In the context of the lattice regularization of the four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric Yang--Mills theory (4D $\mathcal{N}=1$ SYM), we formulate a generalized BRS transformation that treats the gauge, supersymmetry (SUSY), translation and axial U(1) ($U(1)_A$) transformations in a unified way. A resultant Slavnov--Taylor identity or the Zinn-Justin equation gives rise to a strong constraint on the quantum continuum limit of symmetry breaking terms with the lattice regularization. By analyzing the implications of the constraint on operator-mixing coefficients in the SUSY and the $U…
We present a new supersymmetric extension of the standard model. The model is constructed in warped space, with a unified bulk symmetry broken by boundary conditions on both the Planck and TeV branes. In the supersymmetric limit, the massless spectrum contains exotic colored particles along with the particle content of the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM). Nevertheless, the model still reproduces the MSSM prediction for gauge coupling unification and does not suffer from a proton decay problem. The exotic states acquire masses from supersymmetry breaking, making the model completel…
