Homogeneous rotation symmetric Boolean functions have been extensively studied in recent years because of their applications in cryptography. Little is known about the basic question of when two such functions are affine equivalent. The simplest case of quadratic rotation symmetric functions which are generated by cyclic permutations of the variables in a single monomial was only settled in 2009. This paper studies the much more complicated cubic case for such functions. A new concept of \emph{patterns} is introduced, by means of which the structure of the smallest group G_n, whose action on the set of all such cubic functions in $n$ variables gives the affine equivalence classes for these functions under permutation of the variables, is determined. We conjecture that the equivalence classes are the same if all nonsingular affine transformations, not just permutations, are allowed. This conjecture is verified if n < 22. Our method gives much more information about the equivalence classes; for example, in this paper we give a complete description of the equivalence classes when n is a prime or a power of 3.
Let $R(r,n)$ be the $r$th order Reed-Muller code of length $2^n$. The affine linear group $\text{AGL}(n,\Bbb F_2)$ acts naturally on $R(r,n)$. We derive two formulas concerning the number of orbits of this action: (i) an explicit formula for the number of AGL orbits of $R(n,n)$, and (ii) an asymptotic formula for the number of AGL orbits of $R(n,n)/R(1,n)$. The number of AGL orbits of $R(n,n)$ has been numerically computed by several authors for $n\le 10$; result (i) is a theoretic solution to the question. Result (ii) answers a question by MacWilliams and Sloane.
There are two construction methods of designs from $(n,m)$-bent functions, known as translation and addition designs. In this paper we analyze, which equivalence relation for Boolean bent functions, i.e. $(n,1)$-bent functions, and vectorial bent functions, i.e. $(n,m)$-bent functions with $2\le m\le n/2$, is coarser: extended-affine equivalence or isomorphism of associated translation and addition designs. First, we observe that similar to the Boolean bent functions, extended-affine equivalence of vectorial $(n,m)$-bent functions and isomorphism of addition designs are the same concepts for a…
In this paper, we investigate permutation rotation-symmetric (shift-invariant) vectorial Boolean functions on $n$ bits that are liftings from Boolean functions on $k$ bits, for $k\leq n$. These functions generalize the well-known map used in the current Keccak hash function, which is generated via the Boolean function on $3$ variables, $x_1+(x_2+1)x_3$. We provide some general constructions, and also study the affine equivalence between rotation-symmetric S-boxes and describe the corresponding relationship between the Boolean function they are associated with.
The largest Hamming distance between a Boolean function in $n$ variables and the set of all affine Boolean functions in $n$ variables is known as the covering radius $ρ_n$ of the $[2^n,n+1]$ Reed-Muller code. This number determines how well Boolean functions can be approximated by linear Boolean functions. We prove that \[ \lim_{n\to\infty}2^{n/2}-ρ_n/2^{n/2-1}=1, \] which resolves a conjecture due to Patterson and Wiedemann from 1983.
We associate to each Boolean function a polynomial whose evaluations represents the distances from all possible Boolean affine functions. Both determining the coefficients of this polynomial from the truth table of the Boolean function and computing its evaluation vector requires a worst-case complexity of $O(n2^n)$ integer operations. This way, with a different approach, we reach the same complexity of established algorithms, such as those based on the fast Walsh transform.
Vectorial Boolean functions are crucial building-blocks in symmetric ciphers. Different known attacks on block ciphers have resulted in diverse cryptographic criteria for vectorial Boolean functions, such as differential uniformity and nonlinearity. Very recently, Bar-On et al. introduced at Eurocrypt'19 a new tool, called the differential-linear connectivity table (DLCT), which allows for taking into account the dependency between the two subciphers $E_0$ and $E_1$ involved in differential-linear attacks. This new notion leads to significant improvements of differential-linear attacks on seve…
A one to one correspondence between regular generalized bent functions from $\F_2^n$ to $\Z_{2^m},$ and $m-$tuples of Boolean bent functions is established. This correspondence maps self-dual (resp. anti-self-dual) generalized bent functions to $m-$tuples of self-dual (resp. anti self-dual) Boolean bent functions. An application to the classification of regular generalized bent functions under the extended affine group is given.
Let $f_n(x_0, x_1, \ldots, x_{n-1})$ denote the algebraic normal form (polynomial form) of a rotation symmetric (RS) Boolean function of degree $d$ in $n \geq d$ variables and let $wt(f_n)$ denote the Hamming weight of this function. Let $(0, a_1, \ldots, a_{d-1})_n$ denote the function $f_n$ of degree $d$ in $n$ variables generated by the monomial $x_0x_{a_1} \cdots x_{a_{d-1}}.$ Such a function $f_n$ is called monomial rotation symmetric (MRS). It was proved in a $2012$ paper that for any MRS $f_n$ with $d=3,$ the sequence of weights $\{w_k = wt(f_k):~k = 3, 4, \ldots\}$ satisfies a homogene…

In this paper, several new classes of Boolean functions with few Walsh transform values, including bent, semi-bent and five-valued functions, are obtained by adding the product of two or three linear functions to some known bent functions.Numerical results show that the proposed class contains cubic bent functions that are affinely inequivalent to all known quadratic ones. Meanwhile, we determine the distribution of the Walsh spectrum of five-valued functions constructed in this paper.
Affine equivalent classes of Boolean functions have many applications in modern cryptography and circuit design. Previous publications have shown that affine equivalence on the entire space of Boolean functions can be computed up to 10 variables, but not on the quotient Boolean function space modulo functions of different degrees. Computing the number of equivalent classes of cosets of Reed-Muller code $\mathcal{R}(1,n)$ is equivalent to classifying Boolean functions modulo linear functions, which can be computed only when $n\leq 7$. Based on the linear representation of the affine group $\mat…
The design of plateaued functions over $GF(2)^n$, also known as 3-valued Walsh spectra functions (taking the values from the set $\{0, \pm 2^{\lceil \frac{n+s}{2} \rceil}\}$), has been commonly approached by specifying a suitable algebraic normal form which then induces this particular Walsh spectral characterization. In this article, we consider the reversed design method which specifies these functions in the spectral domain by specifying a suitable allocation of the nonzero spectral values and their signs. We analyze the properties of trivial and nontrivial plateaued functions (as affine in…
The study of non-linearity (linearity) of Boolean function was initiated by Rothaus in 1976. The classical non-linearity of a Boolean function is the minimum Hamming distance of its truth table to that of affine functions. In this note we introduce new "multidimensional" non-linearity parameters $(N_f,H_f)$ for conventional and vectorial Boolean functions $f$ with $m$ coordinates in $n$ variables. The classical non-linearity may be treated as a 1-dimensional parameter in the new definition. $r$-dimensional parameters for $r\geq 2$ are relevant to possible multidimensional extensions of the Fas…
In this paper we prove that in opposite to the cases of 6 and 8 variables, the Maiorana-McFarland construction does not describe the whole class of cubic bent functions in $n$ variables for all $n\ge 10$. Moreover, we show that for almost all values of $n$, these functions can simultaneously be homogeneous and have no affine derivatives.
To determine the dimension of null space of any given linearized polynomial is one of vital problems in finite field theory, with concern to design of modern symmetric cryptosystems. But, the known general theory for this task is much far from giving the exact dimension when applied to a specific linearized polynomial. The first contribution of this paper is to give a better general method to get more precise upper bound on the root number of any given linearized polynomial. We anticipate this result would be applied as a useful tool in many research branches of finite field and cryptography. …
Plateaued functions as an extension of bent functions play a significant role in cryptography, coding theory, sequences and combinatorics. In \cite{Mesnager9}, Mesnager \emph{et al.} introduced generalized plateaued functions in order to study plateaued functions in the general context of generalized $p$-ary functions. In this paper, we focus on the constructions of generalized $p$-ary $s$-plateaued functions from $V_{n}$ to $\mathbb{Z}_{p^k}$, where $V_{n}$ is an $n$-dimensional vector space over $\mathbb{F}_{p}$, $p$ is a prime, $k\geq 1$ and $n+s$ is even when $p=2$. In particular, when $k=…
In this paper we introduce generalized hyperbent functions from $F_{2^n}$ to $Z_{2^k}$, and investigate decompositions of generalized (hyper)bent functions. We show that generalized (hyper)bent functions from $F_{2^n}$ to $Z_{2^k}$ consist of components which are generalized (hyper)bent functions from $F_{2^n}$ to $Z_{2^{k^\prime}}$ for some $k^\prime < k$. For odd $n$, we show that the Boolean functions associated to a generalized bent function form an affine space of semibent functions. This complements a recent result for even $n$, where the associated Boolean functions are bent.
